An absolutely beautiful day! I took a walk around the property.. not many tracks, though 7 beds and tracks 60 yards from one blind...the snow hangs on all the branches and ice on all the trunks. The most beautiful shade of blue I think I've ever seen the sky produce peeks from behind the tangle of white covered branches. The ice glittering in the bright sun...Yes indeed...makes life's irritations melt away.13 points

Since I started my new business its been tough to get away. I'm sneaking out between a Milano and Goldfish sale this week and will have someone covering my stores. It was tough the first six months worrying about every little detail but now I feel good about the change in my life. Last 25 years left the house at 7 came home at 8 spent 3.5 hours commuting. Now leave the house at 5 home at 2. Life is good owning my own business. The time spent with my girls in the afternoon is priceless. Yes we don't have so much time spent at the cabin but it pays off being around all the time when they need you………..11 points

Every sailing ship had to have cannon for protection. Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. The master wanted to store the cannon-balls such that they could be of instant use when needed, yet not roll around the gun deck. The solution was to stack them up in a square based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had four, the next had nine, the next had sixteen, and so on. Four levels would provide a stack of30 cannonballs. The only real problem was how to keep the bottom level from sliding out from under the weight of the higher levels. To do this, they devised a small brass plate ("brass monkey") with one rounded indentation for each cannonball in the bottom layer. Brass was used because the cannonballs wouldn't rust to the "brass monkey", but would rust to an iron one. When temperature falls, brass contracts in size faster than iron. As it got cold on the gun decks, the indentations in the brass monkey would get smaller than the iron cannonballs they were holding. If the temperature got cold enough, the bottom layer would pop out of the indentations spilling the entire pyramid over the deck. Thus it was, quite literally, "cold enough to freeze the balls off a "brass monkey. "7 points

For me, if I were having some issue with a small minor section of this entire site, I would simply not access it rather than taking 8 pages to whine about it. I guess I am hearing that there are a few that have some kind of access system that lists all the new discussions of all sections of the site, and for some reason this is a terrible problem that forces them to open and read threads that are in that section. Frankly, it really sounds like a tempest in a teapot and more of a self-control problem. Certainly not something of the magnitude that requires shutting down what appears to be a very popular part of this site. No the real problem is that people lack the self control to stop reading the threads that are in that sub-forum. And now they are complaining about a problem that really amounts to their own personal decisions. As far as I know there is no system that automatically makes you open and read any of the posts. So if you are even aware of what is going on in that section of this site, it is because you purposely opened that sub-forum and the thread, and read it. You did it voluntarily. So if "Gun & Hunting Laws & Politic Discussions" is wounding some of you members to the extent stated here, I have one simple piece of advice that keeps everybody happy. Stay the hell out of there! Its really no bigger problem than you each individually make of it.6 points

It's a tough business. The stars want your stuff for free, and the up-and-comers want your stuff for free. The guitars, basses, and drums I built are still out there being played around the world. As a business it didn't work out, but it's pretty cool to get a CD in the mail, or a backstage pass now and then.4 points

What you explained Doc, as well as this whole thread clearly demonstrates is the liberal mindset. "If I am afraid of something or don't like something I best make a law against it." Case in point the stupid ass unsafe act. Oh no those hunting rifles are terrifying I best ban all of them becsuse they look scary. And that is exactly what is going on with the requests of some namby pamby members here, who don't enjoy the political threads so we should outright ban them. Here's an idea...LEAVE THE FORUM IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT! I promise you, you won't be missed. You Can't Beat My Meat!4 points

When I first started hunting small game in the early 1960s, the soil bank was still in effect, and there were still enough wild pheasants here in southern Steuben County so that a hunter who did his homework could shoot a limit now and then. Hunting was MUCH better just a few miles north around the Finger Lakes.. By the late 60s, in order to find GOOD pheasant hunting, you had to go further north, but there was some pretty damn good hunting to be had. I hunted opening day 1968, and 1969 with some friends around Gasport. One of those opening days ( I can't remember which) I counted 42 Cockbirds flushing...We sure did not kill them all, and some were no doubt re-flushes, but I did see rooster pheasants getting into the air 42 times in one day. I know I had no problem killing my limit both days with my 28 gauge side/side that my parents had given me for my high school graduation present. By the time I got out of the service, in the early 70s, there was still pretty good hunting from the thruway north. We had good hunting north of Batavia around Elba, although it was nowhere near as good as we had around Gasport 10 years prior. Around the end of the 70s, the pheasant population plummeted... The only really GOOD pheasant hunting I have had since then was a 3 year period when I hunted around Bellevue Iowa...That was great..Lots of beautiful wild birds..I probably killed more pheasants in those 3 years out there than I have killed in NY in my entire life.4 points

answered more than once. a good many of us view the site through the new content feed. it shows EVERYTHING in chronological order. I'm not a trapper, so I generally skim past those topics but sometimes I check in because it's neat. I don't duck hunt, but enjoyed seeing that one of our members did the art work for the stamp. If I just went to deer, archery and turkey I'd miss a good bit of stuff that still interests me or maybe i don't realize yet "should" interest me. This site is very much responsible for me getting into making my own sausage. I might have never have gone into the processing section if I hadn't have seen some of the topics come across the feed. I have never been interested in doing my own euro... but seeing some members do their own has convinced me I'm still not I would bet money, more users use the feed than seeking out individual sections. With all do respect a serious question; does that help?3 points

You need to figure out what a stalker is.Now I have not followed you around to nearly every one of your posts...I do not go to your topics and say nasty, derogatory things.Sound familiar? Hhhmmm. This thread was started by Fast Eddie and I, like many others have been posting our opinions. Now you, have a choice...read and then post relevant statements or read and move on..The fact you did neither, reveals a inability of self control. This is very relevant to the conversation. It has been the main issue of the topic3 points

I feel no need to stick up Trump, You and your party seem to be doing just Fine with that. I've watch your post on Obama how can you say after 7+ years this country is better off. Convince me how you think Bernie or Hilary would leave the USA Better off. Remember Hillary Said she is running on Failed Obama policy, and his legacy. Bernie is running on Socialist ideology. If you're going to fling crap around here you better be willing to have crap flung back at you. I rarely see anyone here have crap flung at them for no reason. So if someone is tired of all the attacks directed at them or constantly feel a need to defend themselves they should really think about why that is the case. I still remember my very first pheasant.. I was hunting with a friend on my Dad's property ( he had 178 acres) down behind the barn. Our dog was my beagle George..Stupidest beagle I ever hunted with, but he could do a halfway decent job of running a rabbit once he found the track. I usually had to kick the rabbit out for him, because he was too damn dumb to find one by himself. George DID, however, like pheasants, and when he stumbled across a pheasant track he would give a different bark than when on a rabbit, and he trailed them slow enough so that I , a mere wisp of a lad at that time could keep fairly close to him and perhaps be in range when the bird got in the air. My buddy and I were working a hedgerow when the rooster got up between us. he flushed out my side..I was using my Eastern Arms Co. 16 gauge single shot, and my buddy had his Dad's 20 gauge single shot. The bird presented a perfect shot, and BOTH of us missed him clean..Rooster fever, I guess. However, I marked the bird's line of flight and we followed him.. A couple hundred yards further, Dumb Old George struck a track, and I hurried behind him to keep up. Just as we reached Dad's upper cow pasture, the bird got into the air, and presented me with a nearly straightaway shot. I didn't choke that time and dropped the rooster..I can still see him flopping his last in the cropped grass of the pasture.. IIRC, that was around 1963..3 points

Last weekend, just before the fellas and I enjoyed a venison backstrap, we took a walk around the property sizing the maples up for suitability in a future as guitars. We found a pair that we'll fell later in the year, but we also found this sizable maple burl that will likely become quite a bit of inlay. I'll drive it up to his shop in Freeport, ME in a couple of weeks. I don't know if there are any other musicians/guitar players out there, but if we cut into it, I'll post some follow-up pictures regardless; burl is beautiful, and we're hoping this one is solid all the way through. Frikkin' weighs enough... Here's my buddy's website, in case anyone is interested in his building style: http://www.aoguitars.com/2 points

Ants, I was going to respond to you a couple different times. I have even gone far enough to type a post and then say heck with it and cancel it. I am with Belo on this one, as I look at this forum the same way. It's just how it comes up when I enter this forum with all the new content listed in one easy-to-see place. I can't speak for anyone but myself, but for everyone that says we (I) look at all these posts and then complain about it is incorrect. unless the political thread title mentions something that has to do with Safe Act or other things of that sort, I skip them. I also look to see who started a new thread (all threads) that's listed and that tells me just as much, if not more about whether it's worth clicking on. My issue is more about the negative BS that seems to come in most of the regular posts. And the only reason I'm saying any of this is because a moderator started this thread and asked. Otherwise you guys would never know2 points

With the Winter Bow season open till Feb 20th and 24" of snow that fell the week befor I headed to my stand hoping for a nice doe for the freezer. A group of deer came by from several trails and I spotted a good size doe limping into one of my shooting lanes, I drew back and just as I was about to shoot I noticed this buck trotting in on the same trail, so I held my draw while aiming on the same spot and when he was in my sight I let fly my arrow. It was a double lung and he ran 80 yards spaying blood on both sides of the trail in the snow, stopped and tipped over. When I got there it looked like someone threw a bucket of red paint on the snow. I am truly blessed and look forward to sharing this bounty with friends and family.2 points

Yes. And you should do the same with the political posts. I don't click on 2/3 of the topics on this site, because most of them don't interest me. You choose to search out topics, you don't like, and then complain about them. Its nonsense. There are a ton of members here who you will never see responding to a political topic. Thats how you handle topics you don't care for.2 points
