  4. Met Jack Nicklaus years back when I took some lessons from Jim Flick. We talked hunting for awhile. Jack used to schedule an extra day or two around an event to do some hunting .My rep for Nicklaus golf forward this pic to Jack who then signed it and personally mailed it to me. I thought about asking him to come hunt NYS with me. Yup , I'll be picking him up at the airport from his private jet in my then beat up Subaru Outback. It was a fun thought at the time lol.

  6. Bar none , best fish I ever had was in ASP. We hiked miles upstream to a beaver dam. Crouching down and pitching panther martins. Caught a few native brookies. Took back to camp. Cut off heads , gutted , little salt n butter in cavity. Wrapped in foil and thru on grate over fire. This even trumped our salmon from AK while we were there.

  8. I like to cook them in a hot cast iron skillet with butter. Just gut them, cut off head & tail, rinse & pat dry. Melt butter in skillet. You want it hot, but not hot enough to scorch the butter. Lay the fish in the butter & cook it until the skin is crispy & the meat flakes off the bones with a fork. For thicker fish, cover the pan. Try to only flip it a couple times, or they start to fall apart. I season it with salt / pepper & lemon juice.

  10. Yesterday afternoon I glanced out the window , and for a split second I thought it was a huge red winged blackbird. After doing a double take I realized it was a banded crow. Apparently a guy named Kevin McGowan from Cornell has been banding and researching crows since 1989. I forwarded him the info he requested on his website.

  11. I only have 2 of these types of box calls in my collection. One is by Quaker Boy, called their "mini-boat paddle" and this one really sounds awesome still. The other one is made by a good friend of mine Tim Fralick, and he makes one called the "Burrville Bomber" , it's a rather large call and doesn't fit well in my vest due to it's size. I usually end up carrying it in my decoy bag. They both sound great to my ears.

  12. I'm pretty good at clams and getting better at oysters. I agree with the " foil on campfire" method for cooking fish in camp..I usually throw the foil wrapped fish right on the coals and turn it once a minute . It doesn't take long, less than 10 minutes.I have done that with leaopard rainbows, grayling and dolly vardens in Alaska, trout all over the continent, and bass and walleyes in Canada..It's always succulent that way.

  13. I understand where that thought comes from. It is simple..... Many (most?) gunhunters would love to force their way into bow seasons and enjoy the benefits that bowhunters have fought hard to establish over the years. They just don't want to use a bow and undergo all the pain of mastering that particular weapon. They want the bennys without the effort. Well now they have the crossover weapon that allows them to do that. We'll see if we become another Ohio where the bow season is now a "crossbow season" where they happen to allow you to still use your vertical bow. You have to admit that a crossbow is a very attractive alternative weapon for those who don't like all that archery form and discipline crap. So we wind up with a simple re-distributing of hunters from gun season to bow season. All those reasons that so many took up the bow for. The attempt to escape the frenetic party atmosphere of gun season for relative peace and quiet of the bowhunting world will undergo an irreversible change to something that represents a gun season without the bang.

  21. I am still confused that your worring about recovery and safety factor, the bow hunting course will be mandatory! At least when i took the course 30+ years ago recovery , tracking, proper shot placement , were all highly stressed and i am sure they are today! I dont see any similarity between a gun and a crossbow other than the stock, it must be drawn(guns dont) loaded with arrow( guns dont use arrows) kenitic energy of a 200 lb pull crossbow is only the same as a 5 or 70 lb pull bow, unlike the thousands of foot pounds produced by gun. Distance is only limited by shooter skill with any weapon. as for more pressure if there are 250 bow courses available through out the year and 50 students per class thats only 12500 more ehunters entering the woods and that is a high estimate as class sizes are smaller on average.. plus you have to remember hunting losses in hunters that give up the sport for 1 reason or another every year some permant some temporary. if a new hunter walks through the woods with a xbow trying to hunt like gun hunting deer will get up and move which can be a good thing in warmer weather..

  23. Where "IT" comes from is the manufactures of the xbow, promoting the ease of implementation. Any Tom, Dick or Harriet can gun down the unsuspecting deer, hog, turkey etc. with a xbow. Things get a bit trickier in real world applications IMO. The old guy with the bum shoulder is kind of a horse ball reason for the xbow. A guy who's shoulder is bad enough that he can't shoot a vertical bow, is really going to use the xbow? Cocking a xbow with a bum shoulder ain't no fun, holding a xbow with a bum shoulder ain't no fun, climbing a tree with a bum shoulder ain't no fun, gutting and dragging out a deer with a bum shoulder ain't no fun. Face it, the xbow is for the healthy....................

  27. Very rarely do I ever get to see the mommas. The kits are usually are out playing while momma is out hunting down dinner. If I don't see them out, I'll stay away assuming they are in the den with her and she wont let them out while I'm there anyhow. I also try not to stick around longer than an hour when I do see them out. When I was running cams over the dens last spring, they showed momma coming and going every hour, on the hour like clockwork. I wouldn't want them to miss their feeding time.

  28. And still, with a crossbow, you have to have the skill and woodsmanship to consistently, put yourself 30 yards or so downwind of deer to kill them. Even with rifles, some "clowns" can only hope to get lucky. No matter what tool is in their hand. A good hunter is still a good hunter. A stumblebum in the woods is no threat to the deer population. Especially with a crossbow! Let full inclusion happen. And let each hunter decide for themselves what tool they want to hunt with.

  33. What solid reasons have been given for protesting full inclusion? In either thread? 1-"I don't want 'clowns' hunting my area.". 2-"These 'clowns' will treat a crossbow like a gun.". 3-"It will add hunting pressure!". 1- If you don't want 'clowns' hunting your area, knock on as many private land owners doors as you can find and ask permission to hunt that land. It takes 5 minutes to ask someone for permission to hunt land. Or get a lease. 2- I highly doubt that. You cannot "spray and pray" with a crossbow. 3- If ten people in your area buy a crossbow and start hunting, it will not mean any more pressure then if ten people buy a traditional or a compound bow*. *Side note; If you are hunting a 50 acre piece of public land and have an issue with other people being there, find a bigger spot. Even this post makes no factual basis, but it does lean on common sense and a want for the sport to grow.

  34. Sounds great, Elmo !! I never had them, but I sure do like shrimp and lobster .. It has always amazed me what a BROAD spectrum of distinct flavors that different seafood offers.. Shrimp , crab, lobster, scallops and clams all have their distinct flavors...And absolutely NOTHING in the world tastes any thing like oysters.

  37. I do that often with lake trout or large stream trout..it is excellent that way, but it always seems to taste better done in camp on the coals of the campfire. Of course, EVERYTHING tastes better in camp. Hard to beat a chunk of moose or caribou impaled on a stick and then broiled about medium rare over the campfire..

  41. Your dad, kid or disabled neighbor aren't my pariah. The average joe who has a gun season starting during chase phase, running the same length as archery season, is the issue. We do not need more of that mentality in the woods or altering the herd structure or harvest. Glad you enjoy archery, and your avatar has my think you enjoy older deer.... This conversation is about preserving that. All of these jackasses that claim they're the same are wrong and if we want to make it equal opportunity let's follow ohios one and done plan...but then all of the cross I advocates would sing a new song. Cool on your kiddo w steel. I would guess the yotes take out over 50% of the fawn crop annually. This was nowhere near the case 5 or 10 years ago. They're gaining on the predator side of the cycle. When our nasty snow gets an ice crust they're on adults. We also have had some brutal winters. I believe with all my heart they're doing the dec s dirty over harvest work and are the ideal apex predator for such a small parcel environment as wNY.

  44. I'm more for the preservation of separate seasons, or a progression of seasons then anything else.....I own a crossbow and was quite content with the way it is/was. I felt the same way when they allowed scoped inline muzzleloaders into that season......I won't fight against it and will use it more if it happens, but am quite content with the split season.
