Well this came back and is actually bigger than I remember. This is the only buck I have ever seen while hunting. Not surprising I guess since this last season was my first. I love the hole towards the end of the right antler. Another neat thing was a scar on his cheek the taxidermist said went most of the way through his skin. It all adds character. I put it on a piece of old oak that I pulled out of my brothers house during a remodel. We are guessing the board is at least 100 years old but probably much older.12 points

First gobble at 5:36. 2 birds together, a couple hundred yards up the ridge. They were talking until a few minutes ago, when 2 deer snuck in on me and blew like crazy. Great to be back in the woods. I can't wait until Saturday!4 points

I mowed my lawn for the first time today.. Neighbors on both sides mowed THEIRS and shamed me into it.. That means I'll be a SLAVE to my damn grass every 4 or 5 days for at least 3 months, maybe more if we have a wet summer.. I've been threatening to pour the whole lawn to concrete and paint it green.3 points

It's kind of a long story on how we ended up in Naples today but we did. As we were heading back to Canadice late this morning I thought I'd take my wife the scenic route up around Harriet Hollister Spencer State Park back into Canadice to pick up the boat. As we were going up the road to my uncle's old camp I was saying to my wife that one of my inna' net buds lives right up here............she says "oh yea, sure, another imaginary friend!!" So up we go and I get to this camp and I see a guy sitting on the porch, chillin'. Now I've only seen a couple of pics of Skillet here on the web and I wasn't really sure if this was him or not or if he was even there so I roll down the passenger side window and holler...."hey, is Skillet around?" The chillin' guy says "who?" I yell back, Skillet! 3 seconds later this young buck steps out and yells back, "Larry?" He hollers to pull in so we obliged........ We exchanged introductions and it turned out the fellow on the deck was Skillet's buddy Paul, also a member here! We had a nice 30 minute chat and they showed my wife and I the camp. KILLER place! Right in the heart of great deer, turkey, squirrel hunting and some fine trout fishing. I asked if would be OK to have my wife snap a pic and they agreed. From left to right......Skillet, Lawdwaz and (IIRC) O'Brian33 We had a great visit and hopefully we can do it again, maybe a squirrel hunt this September!3 points

This isn't my first buck but it is my first wall mounter and biggest yet. I posted a thread in the fall about keeping him natural or fixing him. I kept him natural and wouldn't have it any other way! I often find myself just looking at him reliving that morning. Has me itching to get out there, trying to get him some company on the wall.3 points

Probably because not all of us wants a mass PM from you. It's like spam being shoved down your throat. I also don't see why kids and females would have an issue with the ads. If the ads is what keeps this place running, why not? I see nothing wrong with it thus far. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems3 points

Well the roost spot is still active, 3 adult birds and 7 hens roosting there last 3 nights, went in this am and let them leave and then cleared a 150 yard 2 ft wide trail and cleared out a couple tree bases In prep for youth hunt , should help with the walk in and set up keeping things as quiet as possible..3 points

One trick we tried when we went to Texas for Rios years ago, buy a pair of woman's panti-hose, cut in half at the crotch, hence a leg in each hand. The carefully pull the opening over the bird starting from the head until the entire bird is "in" the leg of the pant-hose. Two options, take it like that right to your taxidermist as is, or place into the freezer and take at a later time when he is open. The guy we took our birds to said that was an excellent way to prevent and damage to the feathers, beard, etc.2 points

I pretty much pack my day pack with everything and take it everywhere. Knife, extra compass, gutting gloves, extra gloves, socks and clothes in cold weather, GPS, compass and calls on lanyard, flashlights and batteries, drag rope, soda, water, Gatorade, trail mix, fat sandwich, chips, range finder, extra release, bandanas, TP, first aid kit and fire starters, hot seat. Only other thing is my phone when hunting LI and radio when I am not solo up in the ADK. I even take the back pack into the tree when on LI as I usually get stuck in the dark and sometimes have to track a blood trail, usually not mine. At its lightest I am probably around a few pounds, LI early bow state land still hunting. Up in the ADK I tend to bring the extra's as it is NFA area. No Fooling Around because every year someone dies up in that area. Then the pack is probably close to its maximum as extra bullets, batteries, clothes and food fill the voids. If I did not stop and post the extra clothes would not be needed but find a great spot miles back and it is basically impossible for me to leave the area, that extra gear, flashlights and warm clothes keep me on post when most others are back at camp. I can't say staying in deep woods late has always worked but one year I found a track of all tracks after getting situated for a hike out in the dark. The next day I caught up to him! Now I get to look at him every day and remember the one day that everything worked out right! Big deal for me as many times something went wrong!2 points

First and foremost there are some MAJOR forum changes coming shortly. We have to upgrade to the latest version of the software we use to run the site, some functionality will change as this is a major bump from where we are now. I expect there to be some issues during the conversion and upgrade, if you notice something let us know. Second, we are moving to 100% SSL full encryption (HTTPS). Logins, posts, the ENTIRE site will be encrypted from your PC/Phone/Table to our servers, this might not mean much to most but its a necessity in this day and age. In short, it prevents prying eyes from seeing anything, which is only a good thing (trust me I'm a IT Geek). Third we have been very laxed, perhaps to much in the moderation of posts and enforcement of our rules. The downside is a few members have chosen to exploit these opportunities to post curses, attacks and other completely useless content that doesn't belong here. There will be no warnings other then this one. Keep it clean, do not attack other members, do not curse (family site). I and all the amazing folks that help maintain and participate in this community have no time to baby sit. We will no longer issue warnings for something you should already know. You break the rules you are not welcome here. See: http://huntingny.com/rules Thanks All John1 point

Just a minot rant so bear with me So I haven't watched any hunting on television in a long time but I am layed up for a few days so I put it on. Out of 7 shows on turkey hunting I've seen . 1. None have shown a turkey killed without a decoy setup in place. 2. None have show a bird killed in the woods. It's either an open field or a clearing on a logging road. 3. 3 have shown hunting with out a blind, out of 34 hunts between all 7 programs. 4. 4 actually used bow, 6 crossbow, the rest were gun hunts 5. 4 were women hunting, 3 with kids the rest were all pro staff men hunting. 6. 6 were filmed in ny, most were the mid west amd south. 7. 1 hunt talked about roosting birds the night before. 8. None explained the calls they were using or why 9. 24 hunts mentioned that they were champion callers.. I guess maybe local contest champion counts.. 10. Actually was impressed 5 were Jake hunts (unfortunately all were by kids or women) like men can't shoot a jake...???? They taste better imo Just kind of sickening the push for products you need to hunt turkey thay are not needed.. No one talked about patterning a gun few even talked about scouting ahead.. most was we saw some sign and set up.. Guess I am not a turkey hunter by tv standards.. no wonder people try it and give up.. or look like they are on expediton or safari with all the gear they carry. Anyone else remember the old videos that taught you something?1 point

For those who are not aware Hornady has a free online ballistic calculator. It is a nice useful tool for the handloader as it will show pretty much how a load will perform ballistically at a multitude of ranges. http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/ballistics-calculator To give an idea on how it works below is a sheet I worked up using data from a load for my 220 Swift. You fill in the description which in this case was "22 cal" Put in the ballistic coefficient for the bullet being loaded which was .229 Bullet weight 52 grs Put in your sight in distance which in this particular case is 250 yds Finally the feet per second you are getting at the muzzle, my 220 hits just over 3900 fpson my chronograph Then hit calculate fro your data From here you can make a little cheat sheet by clicking on cheet sheet. It can be printed out and saved, some folks will have them in the ammo box and others will tape them to the stocks of their rifle.1 point

I did porterhouse/shell steaks on the grill. I also did some shrimp kabobs and mushroom jalepeno kabobs. Not pictured was a mac salad with pepperoni, tomato, and scallions in a vinaigrette instead of mayo. Yeah, I left the veins and seeds on the peppers, that's where most of the heat comes from.1 point

What an absolute perfect weekend it has been. Left Friday around 1pm. Made it to the mountain road about 4pm and started up. Got to the peak and there were cars and people all over. It was everyone headed to fishing camp. They all arrived around noon and decided to stop and enjoy the weather and the view with some cocktails. We over enjoyed and made it down to the cabin to make dinner. We had marinated smoked venison backstrap and roasts, with homemade handcut French fries we cooked outside in the turkey fryer. Had midnight hamburgers at 1am and made it to bed at 2am. Woke up at 7 and found out a bear had visited camp between 2 and 7. He got into my cooler as I had brought a hash brown potato bake. Bastard ate the whole thing and all the oil in the fryer. Drug another cooler into the spring and another 32qt cooler was 35 yards into the woods. Cleaned up and had breakfast, and was at the stream edge by 7:57am. Waited 3 minutes and casted at 8am. First cast, fish number one for the day. The other 5 I caught throughout the day did not come that easy. Lost more than I caught and only kept my 5. Between 6 of us fishing, we caught 22 stocked trout, and several small brookies, and the trophy of the day was an 11 inch brookie caught by one of the local guys. Less cocktails on Saturday night and got up at 6:15 and to the creek by 6:30 this morning. Between my BIL and I we caught 7 to bring home. Great weekend and can't wait for next year.1 point

checked out a new spot in E. Concord yesterday. Did not hear a bird, no sign in the woods of scratching ,droppings or even a feather. Owner says there are birds here as the neighbor feeds them. He says he sees them all the time. ?I'll have to give it one more try before I scratch it off my list.1 point

That's cool Larry! Some days I feel a little goofy posting non "hunting related" critter pics in this section. Your reply is exactly why I don't hesitate to post them though! Most hunters and non-hunters alike can appreciate crazy critter behavior for what it is, while setting aside their differnces for a moment. Not that anyone here wants to shoot a robin, but I wouldn't put it past some of you,lol1 point
