  3. A lady friend of mine called to say hello. She likes to fish and I had a book on fishing for all the game fish in North America I wanted her to have. As we talked, she said her daughter is going on the youth turkey hunt with some other friends. It will be her first time hunting. She said they have lots of turkey on their land and usually do well. Mom bought her daughter a nice Mossberg 500 youth model in 20 gauge with screw in chokes to use. She got the turkey choke and 3" #5's for her too. As we talked, I asked if the girl has a sling. She did not. I told her to stop over and pick up the book and I'd give her one of the many extra slings I have that never gets used. I then started to find lots I stuff I never use anymore. Insulated camo coveralls, non-insulated camo coveralls, (both too small for me for years now) camo hat, neckerchief, face mask, license holder, gloves, seat cushion, belt, turkey call, hoodie, olive drab wool sweater, some netting, hand muff I used to use to bowhunt, a bore snake, and anything else I felt she might need to get started. I also scrounged up two good compact folding knives, some Cutters insect repellent and some bug bite relief spray. They came over yesterday evening and I gave them all this stuff. And since she plans to hunt deer too, I gave her 10 rounds of Winchester 20 gauge slugs to see how it shoots them later in the year. I also gave her a few rounds of 2 3/4" #3 Buckshot to have available if she ever needed to defend herself when home alone. (They live in a very rural area). We talked for awhile about hunting turkey, shooting guns and buying equipment. I answered a lot of her questions. I told her to call or e-mail anytime if she felt I could help her out. I like to do whatever I can to get new hunters started in the sport, every chance I get. She said she's going to call me about adding weight to the stock to cut recoil and adding some sights to the vent rib for slug shooting. I wished her good luck when they left. I hope she bags a nice one. Mom said they would invite me for the turkey dinner.

  4. I got up to the Adirondacks last weekend for some more shed hunting. I found a nice 4 point right away. Maybe a mid 130s buck, but pretty good for that area. (#53, 4/15/16) Fleur saving me the trouble of having to pick it up myself... Fleur found this ancient 4 point buried in the leaves. It looked to be 8-10 years old, maybe even older. Hard to believe the porcupines didn't get it. (#54, 4/15/16) Fleur came through again deep in a spruce swamp... It happened so fast I wasn't able to get good pictures. (#55, 4/15/16) I managed to find one more for myself at the end of the day. (#56, 4/15/16) Group photo:

  5. Today is the day that NYS residents vote in the presidential primaries, both Democrat and Republican. It's a 'closed' primary, so you have to be registered for one party or the other to vote today. Not a political post, just a public service announcement.

  16. I used to enjoy it when I had the time to spare. Nowdays I just dont, and it has become something that sucks up time I really could be using doing something constructive instead of riding around burning gas for a couple of hours at a crack. It has nothing to do with hating being outside or anything like that.

  17. Really hate to follow Sam ...... Went to a friends land in Macedon . I don't know the land well , only hop in one of his stands a couple times a year. Walked it to learn the land better and shoot my new Glock. Found the shed 50 minutes in to the walk and the small head a few minutes after. Number 7 shed for me in maybe 12 to 15 hours of walking around blindly. I just can't grid search to boring for me I just hike trails and such looking for good spots to hang stands .

  19. This forum is not really a true sample of NY Deer Hunters as a whole... the survey gives a good idea of the attitudes of those on this forum, but I don't think it reflects actual overall attitudes of most hunters from around the state... there are more informed and less ignorant hunters that regularly participate in this forum... I won't go as far as saying "the cream of the crop" but better informed than the vast majority of NY hunters.

  24. For any used item, 30 days for a refund is very generous. After that, it's silly to even ask. Especially anything electronic. That's why you should ALWAYS try it out immediately after receiving the item. Case closed.

  26. For turkey this thing is my favorite. Once I figured out to fold it back up into the neat little circle, it sets up or takes down in under a minute and I just strap it to my pack when we pick up to move. I like that it's semi-mobile, lightweight, and packable, and offers the best protection from the swarming black flies. I leave the fiberglass rods at home as I don't mind the sagging roof hunting with a gun. Never really bothered brushing it in for turkey either. Just cleared away the leaves on the floor where I'll set it up and start cluckin'!

  28. I always try to help out the ladies too. I once asked Miranda Lambert if she'd like to hunt turkeys with me, and she said she'd love to but she had to wash her hair that day. Then I asked her if she'd like to go out to dinner and she said she'd love to but she never dates guys who are shorter than she is.

  30. ...got pulled from the back of the safe. Heavy. Only really use it to clear woodchucks from hay fields during the warmer months. Hope to have enough time this summer to tally up 100 for the year. Problem is I'm down to my last box of BlackHills 60gr Vmax. Tried some AE FMJ just to practice and box test with but holy hell the stuff isn't a good combo. 6" groups at 200 yrds! Compared to the routine 3/4" groups at 200 yrds I get with the BlackHills. I'll be ammo hunting or getting into reloading quick. Not good.

  31. Just picked up an old winchester model 92 in 25-20 for small game, pests and varmints. Only factory load is an 86 grain bullet at about 1400fps. A great and fun gun to shoot! But it has an interesting thing. 3 drilled and tapped holes on each side of the receiver forming a triangle. Can't figure out what they could have been for. The triangles are also not symetrical side-to-side. Any thoughts?

  35. go to a good archery shop and get measured for draw length, then try out several brands of compound bows, you will know the right one as it will just feel good in your hand. Also do not get over bowed ( to heavy a peak draw weight ) you can take down all US deer with as little as 40 lbs bow weight, you do not need a bow setup for 70 lbs peak draw weight. I now have mine setup for just 55 lbs, can shoot 3D's all day long with out being over tired.

  36. Once a week, I get an opportunity to ride around in circles in total relaxation, relieving stress, all by myself solving all the worlds problems. It is a bit therapeutic ..... lol. Of course, on occasion, that zero-turn mower can be a bit of a carnival ride. The thing is actually fun to bomb around in, seeing how fast I can zip around the trees and other obstacles. I'm getting pretty good. I haven't taken out a shrub in a couple of years.....lol.

  38. So you didn't like my survey doewhacker? I didn't make the results so maybe you should also dislike the 750 people who voted. That counts as doing something" doesn't it?
    1 point
  39. Again, this guy saying there was 350 doesnt mean thats what there was. What convention is he speaking about? Is he talking about the whole event (which goes on for multiple days) or is he talking about a banquet, etc etc? If youre gonna throw numbers and accusations out there, come with details. After all, you are always asking for the same type of hard data to back up CWD info, are you not?

  40. I think the Spring season is just fine the way it is. If too many people keep making a fuss about all day for the whole season or all day for part of it, it will end up like the fall season. Two weeks NZ and two weeks SZ. Some thing are best left alone.

  41. original but I honestly don't care for it. harder to be consistent with grip versus some other stock designs. despite it's a thumbhole it's really open no obvious place your hand ends up. I was just intending to use the FMJ's for time behind the trigger. wouldn't hunt or sight in with them. i'll probably never shoot a round from the box of American Eagle again pretty much useless out of this gun. blows my mind how poorly they shot.

  47. That is what is different between bowhunters. Those that first fought for a "special" bow season really enjoyed the challenge of that particular weapon. It was all about the love of the bow and the fantastic feeling of accomplishment that those unique hunters got from successfully taking on the challenge. It really was all about the bow. Now "bowhunters" are predominantly all about the kill regardless of what weapon is used. There has been an evolution of mindset more than equipment. The mentality now is, weapon be damned. Just give me a piece of that early season and whatever I can find that will whack a deer with the least amount of effort, challenge and skill. Two completely different schools of thought and attitude. And in today's technocracy, guess which one is winning out.

  48. The DEC is saying no change in the deer regulations for up to the next 5 years, and the possible removal of the doe only reg. in some WMU’s. That’s ok with me.
