Been working on my new hunting rig, started it 5 years ago , nearing completion now.. got all the glass in and 1/2 wired.. turns over ,one sending unit is hooked up in tank it should purr lIke a kitten...

It's beyond a passion at this point, and I get into fall turkey hunting with my dog as much as spring season. Why I like turkey hunting better than deer hunting: 1). Not everyone else does it 2). The challenge 3).Playing the interactive chess game with a mature tom and usually losing 4). Trying new tactics when the old don't work (it's been a tough spring, birds don't seem to want to gobble much) 5) You can turkey hunt multiple states without spending a lot of money, if you do your homework 6). Turkey tastes better than deer (at least, my family thinks so) 7). It can be as easy (hunt from a tent blind on a farm field with decoys) or as difficult (try to outwit a public land mountain bird) as you want it to be 8. The sound of a gobble NEVER gets old 9). You don't have to worry about falling out of a treestand 10). You probably won't get a heart attack dragging a turkey out of the woods 11). Most days you can grab a nap in the woods if it's sunny (Can't do this in a treestand) 12). Mastering all the different calls and cadences is cool I'm sure there are more, but that is my list. I'm on top of the world this morning, played hooky and killed this farm bird yesterday. Yeah, it's been a tough spring season this year!!

Saturday 05/14: Went to our "honey hole" on private land and found out that it's not the sanctuary it seemed to be. Ran into the landowner's son on the bordering property and later got in a calling match with another guy on that property. Good thing is that the landowner's son gave us permission to cross over on their land and hunt that as well, WHICH PAID OFF! Heard this bird randomly gobbling in the distance throughout the morning but he didn't seem to move his location much. At 9:00 we decided to pursue him. We closed the distance and gave a call and he hammered right back at us and was only 80-90 yards away. We set up quick and within a minute we heard another guy moving in from our left. He was cutting and calling like crazy but the gobbler was keyed in on us. every time we gave a couple clucks, he would answer. We spotted a hen slowly working her way to us, bringing the gobbler in. She got about 50 yards away and swung perpendicular and up the hill away from us and the anxious caller to our left. We were in horrible position as it was super thick but we didn't have a choice but to park our butts when we heard him gobble. I had one tiny opening and luck was on my side when the gobbler walked into it. At the perfect time my buddy gave two quick putts and the bird stopped, giving me just enough time to drop the hammer. 3/4" spurs and 8.5" beard but it sure was a paint brush! I have one tag left but plan on devoting the rest of my season getting a bird in front of my girlfriend.

It is probably either Utility owned or a Right Of Way (ROW) granted to the utility and privately owned. Either way it is private property. A trip to the tax map section of the county you are in should tell you who holds it.

Out of all the birds I've killed only 1 has been in a field , that's a tv gimmick !

9H. Day #9. Minus my little hunting buddy. Haven't rolled one yet but not for lack of effort. Hoping the dekes work better from the trunk today. "Every village has an idiot " I'm looking for such idiot long beard of these woods today. Fox barking and wood thrushes singing beautifully Enjoy the morning to all who's out.

And lights all in and working! Headed to dmv in am for registration. . Then interior work.. looks like memorial parade is a go!

Deer hunting for me is a pleasant diversion leading to my winter's meat supply..Turkey hunting is a passion. For me. The thing that makes turkey hunting so special is the AUDITORY interaction with the game. Not only is it possible, but it is very common to have an extremely exciting hunt that lasts sometimes for hours, and never even lay eyeballs on the game..Try THAT with deer hunting ! Tom Kelly said it well in his classic book " The Tenth Legion." "If you persevere, you will eventually kill a few turkeys that you don't deserve, but in the long run you will DESERVE many more turkeys that you don't kill."

I saw this cool idea on Facebook and decided to build one and maybe regain control of my garage, which has been taken over by bikes, scooters, and every sporting good you can think of We will see if it comes out as nice as the one in the picture!

I saw the other thread n I made me wonder why everyone isn't crazy bout turkeys? No need to sway anyone just personal opinions. Myself I love deer hunting especially w bow, It can also be buggy early season but a thermacell takes care of that. Reasons I find turkeys especially fun is that if you roost birds you're guaranteed one high odds chance a morning n that happens right after first light. If you don't succeed you can run n gun, go aggressively find a bird to work. With deer we often just sit n wait. You can be actively involved in the hunt (calling/communicating w bird) and a turkey very often takes it's time getting to you. We typically shoot deer within 10 seconds of seeing them. Turkeys have us on the edge of our seats so to speak for 20-40 minutes often. That's a bit of anticipation and adds to my personal fun. You don't need to be conscious of scent. You get to rest after the morning until you again roost if you do. And they're easy to get out n clean for the table. Taking nothing from either animal. Both fantastic, to me turks have some definate benefits. Anyone else have anything they like better?

Watching tom and 4 hens waaaay off on other hill. 10x42 binocs come in handy. Heard 2 shots over there. At 8 and 9:30. Birds have been lighting it up over there and still. Sun gets that hill more than mine. Always birds there.

I believe it is targeting purchases. I don't think the thought is limiting sales. They would be just fine with all of us selling everything we had, preferably out of state or country

I give all the credit in the world to guys from NYC who hunt ! I've killed deer a half my from my house, and my land is 35 minutes away. I have my own shooting range and so on. The effort it would take me if I lived there, would be hard for me to muster.

I've taken many toms in my day, and turkey hunting is just a lot of fun. But the past few years I don't have a big desire to kill one for some reason. I still go out and scout, get up early to listen quite often before season and during. I like to scout for a couple friends and go out with them, but often end up just running a camera although I do take my shotgun. I don't mind getting up at 3:30, love being out in the woods and watching it get light out, hearing all the different birds, seeing wild flowers and just watching spring unfold is awesome. I guess I think turkeys are beautiful birds and would just rather engage with them, but not blast them. I even have a tom out behind my house that gobbles most mornings and even gobbles when he's roosting quite a few nights. Hearing him gobble almost daily brings more joy to me than going out and shooting him would so I have yet to go after him, although I've thought about it a few times. The past few weekends I've gone fishing for wild browns and walleye's. Will I go out and shoot a tom this season? I might, because I do enjoy the challenge of turkey hunting as well.

I'm sure I've voiced my displeasure with this system before but I'll say it again. IT SUCKS. Between slow internet yesterday, a system that doesn't recognize mine or my daughter's email addresses and the fact that THEIR system was down this morning for a few hours I've had it. Finally I get a bunch of information imputed and I get to the part where you're supposed to link with the IRS system to automatically put our 1040 info into the FAFSA system and it won't work. It is such a FUBAR system I can't believe it. All I can do is try and call them after work tomorrow.

Deer hunting is easier for many. It's cause they may not know where to start. How many have stated no one showed them as kids just in this thread. Deer you can sit in lots of places n get em, they're visible n follow routines. Turkey follow routines as well but the routines often change. Gotta learn the animal than learn to call plus how/when it'll react to calling. What to do when it doesn't, lot to know. I liken turkey hunting as sort of a chess game where you can't see the opposing players pieces. Any other calling of game I've been involved in you commonly see the animal n can tell if you're calling is working. Not so w turks, more often than not you can't see them n by the time you do you should prob have stopped calling already

Honestly, if you have any sort of significant deer population 50x50 is not going to make much of a difference (especially if you do not lime and fertilize to accelerate the growth).. It will take some time to understand the heard size that you have, but at my place 50x50 would never have a chance to grow.. I plant 3 to 4 acres of turnips, brassica and other winter forage and it is usually pretty picked over by December 1st and it is all gone by January 1st. That is with corn and soybeans on 3 sides of my property.

No doubt it's a cool feature. Could you imagine walking out of the mall and pressing a button and have your car pick you up at the door . Very Knight Rider ish

I took note of the deer hunter attendance reported at a recent deer management seminar. The number was something like 64? That number indicates that hunters pretty much sat this one out. Shame on us .....right? We are a pretty opinionated, passionate bunch of people, so why do such activities draw such feeble attendance. I think I know. If we were to attend all the functions and do research and join all the advocacy groups, and research all the political and responsible things that we as good citizens are expected to do, there truly would be no time left in the day to live out our lives. Think about it. All kinds of informative meetings take place many times a year. Elections and campaigns are all things that require intense research, local, state and federal. We literally have thousands of politicians and agencies to keep tabs on. We have school boards and teachers to keep our eyes on. We have judicial branches to keep abreast of. The list of responsibilities that the average citizen is expected to maintain an expert status on is limitless. And if you do not maintain a constant vigil on all of these necessary forces in our lives, you will get chastised and told that you have no right to an opinion if we have not performed the due diligence in becoming expert on all things going on around you. And yet we also have occupations that we are supposed to be expert at so that we can earn a living. We have children to raise, we have homes and personal finance that also require infinite attention. What I am describing is an impossible list of responsibilities that no one who is honest really does a complete job on. Oh, and if you plan on doing any kind of recreation like the hunting itself, well sorry, no time left for that..... too many things that require your intense attention. Well given that impressive and infinitely long list of required attention to all things around us, where do you suppose that a deer management seminar sits on a persons list of priorities? Anybody surprised that only 64 people decided to bump their deer management understanding up to top priority for the night? If you didn't go should you now be considered muzzled from expressing any opinions? What do all of you do to be expert on all things so that your opinion is valued as credible commentary?

Your right Biz and hopefully I'll get better pics..but as I see it now ...knowing the weight gains that will happen and his condition now...trying to figure out how the neck really sets to the brisket, hip and shoulder definition. I agree with you. Though I wonder what the summer weight gain will do to that opinion? Landtrac...wouldn't that be nice...with one exception...I prefer the meat not to taste like a billy goat smells! Seen something several years ago just after 5 in the morning, what grow just described come down in Lake Ontario. Funny, I kept watching news and radio reports some time after. Nothing ever said about it.

I agree I don't see bugs as an issue either. Thermacell works even in bear swamps. Certainly does in turkey woods. This year I've yet to turn it on. I'm thinking turkey hunting can be a hard thing to initially learn, no guarantees of success when you first start off. It can be tough in the beginning. Wondering if that's actually the problem for some?

Id say I like it almost as much as deer hunting because of the auditory stimulation. When you actually get responses to your calls, it makes the heart pump. Also the change in hunting style is nice as well as the habits of the animal being different.

Sorry, I had no idea what fafsa was. Anyhow I have roadrunner for about 6 yrs now. People say they are slow but I use to have dial up. I have never had an issue other than what they charge

The gist of the thread ISN'T the internet service, it's the FAFSA. That said, yes, I can get FIOS but I don't dig Verizon. That just leaves Time Warner.............and it sounds like most people hate them too.

Forty one years ago today, I killed my first spring gobbler. He was a 14 pound jake with a four inch beard. I was thrilled and hooked for life. I still have his wishbone hanging on my memory shelf, labeled May 15, 1975.

I can't remember last weekend for cryin out loud! Needs me a memory shelf.

That wind was BITTER this morning...Nevertheless I had 3 hens and a jake with about a 5" beard come in.. About an hour later I was sitting in the blind freezing when I thought " Isn't this stuff supposed to be FUN ? " I packed it in and went home to make a breakfast of pancakes and sausage for me and The Mermaid...

This is why I butcher my own deer.

Was going to do chili dogs. But, picked up a 50ct bag of Maine Clams at Price Chopper. Didn't want to keep them in the fridge for too long. Had a few raw and steamed the rest. Not the best clams on the planet but still a great change from the norm.

It's taken just about five years, but I've lost a total of 100 pounds even. I'm 6'1" and at my heaviest weighed just shy of 300 pounds. Weighed myself last night at 195 pounds. That is after a vacatiom in Maine eating very well, but not real healthy! The biggest change for me was cutting out as much sugar (I'm diabetic ) as possible and eating less food. That's it. But I stay very active too, walking in the woods, swimming, playing ball with my grandsons, snowshoeing in the winter, using the push mower more than I need to. It all adds up. Grow, there were many times I would hit a plateau and seemed like I wasn't getting anywhere. Just keep at it! I'll be 59 soon and if I can do it anyone can! Hoping you become a big loser!!!.......in weight of course.

We had a feast. Went to a dinner for my g/f's work. Appetizers were octopus, shrimp, lamb meatballs with eggplant, roasted tomatoes, and roasted peppers. Then a pasta dish. Main course was porter house steak, duck, roasted potatoes, green beans and tomatoes, and asparagus.

Cams were out over 2 1/2 months

Just curious, what is the price tag on a cam like that, all set up and ready to go? Sounds like a winner. I'm sure you will give us an honest review as always!
