I took a walk down to the creek to get some shots of some wild flowers today. Hiking along when a momma wood duck and her kids went scurrying across the water. The babies made it safe to the creek bank and hid underneath. Momma however put on the "lame duck act" and began splashing around trying to lure me downstream with her. Out of nowhere from behind me this hawk came ripping past my head and nailed her right in the deepest section of the pool! I had my short lens on so I had to make a quick change before I could do anything. I could hear all kinds of splashing going on but now I couldn't see over a mound of creek rocks. When I finally got situated and peaked over the rise, I saw momma duck swim under the creek bank on the other side and this hawk swimming for the other shore! Momma took a solid hit and there were feathers floating everywhere. She curled up in a hole and didn't come back out while I was there. Not sure if she made it or not. Mr. Hawk didn't stick around long once he dried out from his high speed plunge! Very cool to see such an attack so close!11 points

Tuesday morning I awoke and peered out the window at our duck pen and noticed we were missing a couple. This got my suspicions up as we had lost a duck Saturday night already. I knew something got them and when I went out with my dogs to investigate I found out what was enjoying a Duck dinner on me. It was a Great Hornded Owl!!! I removed the netting over the ducks and tried to scare the owl out. It wasn't sure what to do to get out and eventually I ended up removing all of the net. I thought about grabbing it for a brief second and quickly decided that wasn't a great idea at 530am with no coffee so I kept at it and eventually got it to hop out. It sat there hissing and clapping its beak at me. It finally flew a little and I knew it was ok so I left it alone. It took off at some point and left. What an ordeal! Never a dull moment for us between our hobby poultry farm and all the critters there is always something going on. I'd prefer if they didn't eat my dinner before I can but if they want to bad enough it can be hard to stop them. Last night something chewed it's way into the duck house and took out my favorite duck so now I have to go home build them a fortress that nothing can get into. What a handsome devil.4 points

I try to take my 22 month old daughter with me everywhere I go. Start her young.. Some may be against it but, I even let her shoot with me, a .22 pistol I have.. she loved it. She hates being inside, she will drive us absolutely nuts until we take her outside to play and roam around, so i take her anywhere i can. whether its on the boat, the woods, the wheeler, the tractor.. you name it. Shes an outdoor baby for sure!!! I look forward to every memory we can make... On top of that.. my summer is always spent, fixing and staying up on camp projects, my Dad was taken from us too soon in March, so its all on me now. ITs hard being there without him but i cherish all the good times. The picnics every other weekend, family BBQ all the time Food plots, hang trail cams when July rolls around.. prep stands. Id like to build a box blind for my fiance this summer, but with a July 30th Wedding, my time is limited this year, as well as finances.. lol This is my daughter Alivia and I going to till a food plot 2 weekends ago.. she loved it...4 points

The 2016 legislative session is scheduled to end June 16th. The last few months we have asked you to contact your personal legislators and recently we asked you to write to the chairmen of the Environmental Conservation Committees. Time is running out for us in 2016. Please call the offices of the Chairmen of the Senate and Assembly Environmental Conservation Committees and request they place S7005 and A9623 on their respective committee agendas beginning today. Call today, and every day until June 16th. In 2014 we were successful in getting the crossbow language we have today in the 11th hour by our members and their friends lighting up the phones in Albany. With everyone working together, we can make this happen again in 2016. CALL NOW! Assembly Chairman Steve Englebright 518-455-4804 Senate Chairman Thomas O'Mara 518-455-2091 Newsletter Link3 points

Found a new spot for a possible tree stand location while out spring turkey hunting the last two weeks. Look's very promising, trail leads right to a creek crossing and the amount of tracks leading to it and through it were incredible. Got the goose bumps just pondering where to place my stand come fall!!! I know bow season is a long way off but already getting pumped!!! LOL.....3 points

A big Thank You to all "Live From The Turkey Woods" posters. Some nice stories with some great birds taken. Maybe next season, we can get another contest going again for fun.3 points

Congratulations to Bill, 2012 taco, and everyone else who killed a bird in the bottom of the 9th inning, quite a few guys & girls got one yesterday. I hunted this weekend at my camp in Allegany county, didn't hear a peep, I think they flew south, LOL. Now it's on to summer activities, fishing, home repair, cooking out, and planning for fall turkey trips. Counting down the days....3 points

Made it to Ohio for daylight. Satellite and top scouting was good once. I put eyes on the property and even saw and heard birds. Hoping to hit 1 spot in Indiana and maybe make Iowa before dark. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk2 points

First card pulls of the new antler growing season!!! I am very happy to see this guy (aka Wannabe) still alive. The last pics I got of him were just before daylight on 12/13 (which was the final day of regular gun season) and he never showed up during post season like he has every other year. He is now a 5 year old...been watching since the summer of '12 when he was a yearling 8-pt. My fingers are crossed that he will add some inches after the mild winter and break 140 this year. We'll see in about 7-8 weeks... Last year: This guy almost fooled me, but I recognized him after taking a closer look at the pics. I saw him several times post season still wearing antlers into late february. He is a 4 year old...while he doesn't appear to have the best genetics, he has a lot of character and I can't wait to see what he looks like in August!!! Note the scar over his shoulders... The three evenly spaced notches in the left ear... Last year:2 points

Hard to imagine a sharpshin taking on an adult woodduck, but then I have seen a redtail attack an adult hen turkey.. Definitely not a redtail...I'm going with a coopers.. A goshawk would have smeared poor Mrs Woodie.. I hope she survived to get back and take care of her ducklings.. SUPER footage as usual, Wooly !!2 points

Well, now that spring turkey season is over, back to the always pressing stuff that needs to be done around the house. Still doing some edging along with black mulch. (Lowe's has 5 bags on sale for $10.00 still I think?) Want to plant another shrub on the side of the house, last one died off? Same time working on painting both bath rooms, but those are an inside job when the weather gets crappy outside. I had a new shed put up last fall, want to put in a shelf to store smaller items on and clear up floor space, another project I want to get at this week. Keep working on my turkey displays down in the shop as well, again, weather related projects. Then helping the girlfriend at her place too!!! No couch potato here!!!2 points

Is that a coopers or sharpie ? I can never tell the difference. And again Wooly, you find and see the neatest stuff ever and always catch it on camera !!2 points

Don't take that statement for granted. Those opposed to crossbows are also calling. Call TODAY, TOMORROW and every day until June 16th! We have everything to gain and nothing to lose!2 points

Got there at 9:45 and was #3 on sign in sheet. Got out of there at 11:15. Only 2 people working but gotta say it was ALOT better than driving downtown, looking for parking and taking even longer. Allen was the gentleman who helped me out and a pleasure to deal with. Chris Jacobs was there thanking all who came down and shook my hand. I asked him about the SAFE ACT and the mandatory 5 year renewal /background check. Going on what 3 years now of SAFE ACT and troopers have no idea on how to go about this process so he said "when" they finally figure something out there will be an announcement but don't expect anything soon. Channel 2/4/7 were all there but everyone opted out of interviews, me included. Granted they are ironing out some wrinkles and it'll get quicker but all in all a pleasant experience. And some .44 going down range tomorrow. . Side note. I learned from gent waiting that you can go into PA sheriffs office and in about 20 minutes obtain a non resident pistol permit providing you have a NYS permit. I have a Utah non resident and PA just opted out of recognizing it. New Hampshire online is piece of cake too. No classes or such like a Florida or Utah. The benefits of these non resident permits is other states recognize them. Great if you travel a bunch. Just a heads up.2 points

Found this juvenielle crow today trying to figure out how to put some air under his wings. They nest high in the tall pines every spring, but this is the first time I've ever come across one at ground level. Apparently he bailed from the nest just a little too soon as he wasn't accumulating many frequent flyer miles. He's not the most exciting critter to ever step in front of the lens, but shooting "black" subjects in bright light has always been a challenge for me. .... and here's a couple random filler pics to get my 10 shots in.2 points

Thought this may help out from not having to go downtown Going this morning to get that .44 on my permit. Hoping the wrinkles are worked out as today is the first day they are open ERIE COUNTY CLERK JACOBS TO OFFER SATELLITE LOCATION FOR PISTOL PERMIT HOLDERS County Clerk says Cheektowaga Town Hall Affords Central Location to Customers Erie County, NY- Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that the Erie County Pistol Permit Department will offer weekly satellite services to permit holders every Wednesday from 10 a.m.- 3:45p.m. beginning June 1st inside Cheektowaga Town Hall located at 3301 Broadway. The enactment of the New York State SAFE Act has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the number of new pistol permit transactions in Erie County and since then Jacobs has been working on ways to improve service delivery. In a recent analysis of pistol permit holders by zip code, Jacobs identified that pistol permit holders are evenly dispersed throughout the county. This study prompted Jacobs to approach Town Supervisor Diane Benczkowski to offer pistol permit services at Cheektowaga Town Hall, which is centrally located in the county with easy access from the Thruway. “I have heard from hundreds of pistol permit holders over the last few years asking for an alternative to coming downtown to amend their existing permits, I’m very glad that we were finally able to find a solution,” stated Jacobs. “I want to thank Cheektowaga Supervisor Benczkowski for partnering with us on this initiative.” “We are pleased to work with Erie County Clerk Jacobs and his office to provide a suitable satellite office location for pistol permit holders to conduct business,” said Supervisor Benczkowski. “Cheektowaga welcomes the chance to serve residents from across Erie County.” At this time, only pistol permit holders that have plastic permit cards will be able to take advantage of the following services: add/remove firearms, update personal information, pick up new or upgrade applications, submit opt-out form or upgrade application. Anyone interested in applying for a pistol permit or moving from a paper permit to a plastic card permit must do so at the Pistol Permit office located in Old County Hall, 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo. For additional information, please contact the Pistol Permit Department at 858-6600 or visit www.erie.gov/clerk/pistolpermits.1 point

We went to "Food truck" Tuesday yesterday. First time we went there, one word, AWESOME!!!! Cold beer, lot's of choices of food to try. Impressed by the amount of trucks they have there. From what I hear, they rotate each Tuesday so that others can be there as well. Perfect day too weather wise. Will be doing that again very soon....1 point

About what I mentioned, cept the wife thing I'm divorced. We did fish a lot n she even turkey hunted w me. My kids are teenagers n busy some weekends so I'll be helping the girl I mentor (Saige) get ready to kill her first deer. We came close last fall. When they aren't busy, shooting, fishing, hiking, picking berries. I generally take a friends of theirs and that friends family with us to shoot a little in summer. Brings new folks in that'll never be against us later on. And of course my own family I'm also an archery instructor n gonna be teaching kids and women's classes every weekend my kids aren't around plus I teach hunter ed. Of course a bunch of 3D with my kids, Saige n myself.1 point

We get those 2.5" long ugly bastids in/near the bathroom. My .38 would not be too much gun for those useless creatures.1 point

I would keep it about 4 to 6 inches when you mow it. Try and time it before some rain so your not stressing it too much. 2 feet high, man now ill have to check my little plot havent seen it in a few weeks1 point

Turkey season might be over, but there's always something to do in the outdoors. Camping, fishing, hiking, boating... I didn't kill a bird, and it was a tough season, not just for a novice like me either. But, it's gone and now it's time to fish and camp.1 point

I've sent mine, twice. I personally feel that it's a long shot to even be brought up for a vote this year. With the ethics reform going on, nobody seems to want to do anything after passing the budget. All we can do is hope for a vote at this point. So every contact is important to get this through!1 point

no worries way more than that. just make sure everything is maintained properly like waxing the string with a good wax and a couple drops of rail lube for the bolt to slide nice.1 point

Bill , It's 82 degrees out and way too warm for us all to wearing hip boots for the $hit you're shoveling. Do you have a friend or neighbor who has a smartphone who you could borrow to post pics ?! We'd like to see pics of a possible NYS record bird. Just askin. Just think if you wouldn't have "stung " that other bird you wouldn't have had this chance. Crazy how things work ain't it.1 point

Same here. Been running a "trap line" around the yard for about a week now. Must have caught 100 of the little diggers already on 3 sets. Just using a few sunflower seeds on them so no gooey mess. Might have to do a euro for a nice addition to the trophy room,lol1 point

Here's food for thought...For those guys/gals with the desire to fill the tag they paid for ....now have a shortened season for gun and they don't bow hunt....What do you suppose will happen...Brown down perhaps??? So how does that help exactly???1 point

My number one request to make NY a better deer hunting state- have actual and accurate data on deer populations and the take not the wet dream math formula that is currently embraced by those who market the numbers (and their actions) the most. Quality aging methods and stats would also be sweet to see the truth on. #2 cite the chit out of all the cheating scumbags out there (poachers, trespassers, tag borrowers, baiters, etc). 2b would be do away with the youth seasons but primarily for the cheating listed in 2. #3 survey all hunters and use that as the majority basis for hunting season delegations and feedback. No more select group stuff or the DEC knows so much more that they can't take your opinion. At least those are me three at the moment. The gun season is ridiculously long but it's timing and bag limits hurt the herd more than anything. Just my ideas thiugh Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point
