Met up with Cabin Fever in Utica today, to take some traps off his hands. What a great guy! I look forward to another meet up, real soon, when we both have more time! My hunting partner Gary and I, are going to learn how to trap predators. With these traps, we are well on our way to getting all the stuff we need to get started. Thanks again Bob !19 points

My youngest nephew connected on his 1st deer this afternoon , a nice doe at 90 yards , shot with my Henry single shot 30 30.. his father was sitting with him, liver and both lungs on a quartering shot , went 40 yards and dropped.11 points

This afternoon it was Tyler who connected. We were walking in, and when we got to the field, I spotted a 4pt feeding. Tyler had to sneak a few yrds to clear the hedge row, and used the bipod on his .270 to get a solid rest. 105 yrds. Deer went 10' and dropped. 122lb 4 pt. Couldn't smack that smile from his face. Tomorrow both Tyler and Dom get a lesson on processing deer.10 points

Had a great day hunting. Dom and I had a nice 8 pt run by, then turn and follow the ridge 100 yrds out. He just couldn't find a opening he was comfortable with for a shot. Had a doe bed down 100 yrds out for a hr or so. This evening we hunted a field edge. Had 8 doe, fawn about 150 yrds out. Around 5:45 Dom spotted a deer 80yrds, behind the only tree in this field. It was a buck. After 20 minutes of this deer facing us, turning broadside, but behind limbs. Walking away, then turning around and coming back, Dom finally had a shot. Dropped in it tracks. Needed a second shot in the neck when we walked up to it as he spined it. Nice little 7 pt. Wow was he excited.9 points

Good news everyone. I have a contact at the Sears Photo Dept. in Rochester. She said @phade did in fact bring his buck in for fall portraits. Once I get the negatives, I will share them on the forum!7 points

I know this thread is live from the butcher.. do butchers handle fish? Or just meat? Either way I "butchered" that fish I caught yesterday. Steaks look great, but I need to get these pin bones out. I may end up smoking some of it..7 points

Rain passed in 3S so giving it a dance. Climbed super close to where I know three doe bed daily and in between where they want to feed. Got settled in a took a quick scan and see two of them undisturbed by my climb. Real thick but they are in there- just hope field grass is “what they crave” tonight! I promise that’s a tail! This local spot is nice to drive to but not so conducive to seeing deer.had this doe with fawn at 40-30 and now 12 yards in few sits here. Other night she was licking the fawns head for awhile. She’s not Costanzas worthy as very small , not worth punching my antlerless anywhere tag , seasons young and not gonna lie. I’m a little soft at heart after seeing the 2 of them together so often. Who knows , maybe she’ll be the hot doe in a few weeks bringing bucks in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk6 points

That photo was less than 30 minutes from the shot - went 60-80 yards - shot hit the pocket behind the left front shoulder with a G5 Havoc. Maybe congrats and move on? Pretty much the reason why I don't like posting kills here.5 points

I know I haven't been around this year, so I don't mean to burden anyone. Since I posted about Frankie in the Show your dogs thread, i figured I'd close the loop. Frankie died Friday from acute onset encephalitis of unknown etiology. In English: out of nowhere, he developed severe inflammation and swelling in his brain, and we have no idea why. We took him to Cornell, but he did not respond to treatment . . . . Frankie was a rescue dog that we had adopted July 31st, less than 10 weeks ago. We estimate his age to be about 10 years old, but we really don't know. We know very little about his past. From what we do know, we suspect that he was a puppy mill stud that was dumped on the streets once he outlived his usefulness. We believe he then lived on the streets for several years. He was picked up off the streets in Virginia this summer. His hair was so long, it had turned into dreadlocks encrusted with feces and urine. (pics 1 and 2). A vet in Virginia shaved, neutered and vaccinated him. He then got shipped to a rescue in the Buffalo area. He cleaned up pretty good. Here is what he looked like when we took him home (pic 3). He was underweight; only about 12.5 pounds when he should have been about 15 pounds. When we got him home, we quickly learned that not only was he not housebroken, but he freely peed in his crate (a common thing for puppy mill dogs kept in crates all day, we were told.) Fortunately, belly bands came to the rescue. He was a very smart dog, and very food motivated, so we were able to get him mostly housebroken with several weeks. We also got him to learn his name (Frankie was a name made up by the rescue agency. Since I didn't have any better ideas, we stuck with it), and to learn how to come when called. He was extremely curious, and a bit mischievous (he liked to steal the pillows off the couch and walk on furniture (pics 4 and 5). He was also extremely loyal. He literally followed me around the house like a puppy (pic 6). Sometimes he'd be sleeping in my office and I would try to sneak out to the kitchen without waking him. Nope, he'd wake up and follow me. From the few clues we have, we figure that prior to our adopting him, Frankie had a very hard, neglected and probably abused, life. The first night he came home, my wife took him out for a last pee for the night. He went behind the shed we have in the corner of our yard. It's like a 6'x6' Rubbermaid shed on top of a 8'x8' deck, leaving about 1' of deck all the way around. After a few minutes, he wasn't coming out from behind the shed, so she went to go check on him. He had curled himself up in a ball and had gone to sleep on the ledge of the deck. He must of thought we were throwing him out for the night. She carried him back inside the house. The first week we had him, he slept in a crate in our bedroom. He then got upgraded to a doggy bed on a loveseat at the foot of our bed, once we found belly bands. When we got him, he was missing 5 teeth, and all 4 of his canine teeth were broken. We had our vet give him a dental. When she was done, she had pulled out 15 broken or rotted teeth, including the 4 canines. Once his gums healed from the surgery after a few days, his appetite kicked up another notch. Given the condition of his teeth, our vet told us his teeth had probably been in constant pain. Despite all the hardships he had endured, he was the most loving, sweetest dog you'd ever meet. He NEVER show any sort of aggression. He rarely even barked. He just wanted to give kisses, and be by your side. Except for food, he never asked for anything. He had no concept of "his". We bought him a bunch of toys, but he wouldn't play tug. If you took his toy, he'd just let you have it. No fetch, either. He did play a little bit with his toys by himself; sometimes, but not much. (pic 7). We are very saddened by his sudden passing. We are especially sad for him. He finally had a home where he was loved, well fed, and well-cared for. After the horrible life he must have had, we think he deserved it. But it was not meant to be. I look at the short time we had him as a gift to us. As much as we gave him, he gave back even more in love and loyalty. Frankie, little buddy, rest in peace.4 points

There is only one rut..It begins in September and continues until all or nearly all does stop coming into estrus, usually in January or thereabouts... There is usually a period of time from late October to mid November when the majority of does are in estrus, generally referred to as the "peak" of the rut, but often it is influenced by weather....Some years there is a noticable spike in breeding activity a month after the "peak", if a significant number of does have not been bred for whatever reason, and come into estrus again.. I think this is what is sometimes called the "2nd rut", but it is a misnomer....4 points

So proud of this kid, 16yrs old and competed this weekend in a 18u division NJ tournament/ college showcase. Pitched yesterday for 2 innings in front of college coaches, faced 7 batters , struck out 5 of them and gave up only 1 hit. One of the kids (men) he struck out had arms the size of my legs...lol...thankfully hes talented and big framed and can compete at this level. My son was approached by a college coach from PA, was a great experience for him.4 points

I posted the story in our journal thread under sons first season but thought I’d post a pic here of his first deer for anyone who didn’t see it in the thread. I’ve been blown away by the fact that my 12yr old can bring home meat for table. Crazy and so proud!4 points

You bet your bippy there is. Pistol bullets for 9MM are just about impossible to find and primers especially small pistol primers are hard to come by. If you can find them expect to pay almost double what they would go for 6 months ago.3 points

To be fair, I wasn't planning on posting my kill however, it was clear that someone else posted that I killed and the incessant questions haven't stopped. So, in every other year, the harvest thread is NO COMMENTS, and this year, it's a free for all. I regret posting already. Can't take it back. I killed a (relatively speaking) big deer, and people have in the following posts said bloated, did you find it a few days later, got better pics...I was raised when someone posts a kill you say congrats and move on. Harvest bashing and questioning is bad form IMO.3 points

Not so "live from the woods" but I finally got a sit in last night in 9F. Sat last 3 hours, saw 1 squirrel. Made a list of the things i forgot to bring. I call it dress rehearsal! I got to try out my new Summit climber (Thanks Don _C) i needed to tweek a few things but now i got it set up the way i like it and it's ready to go! Most comfortable stand I own!3 points

Only once....I actually had two bucks come in at once from opposite directions and started fighting right in front of me. They were to far out of range for a shot but I got a hell of a show. When they got done they both walked away in opposite directions and I couldn't bring either one of them back with a grunt or anything else. I usually try once or twice during the early season but have only had it work that one time3 points

We had a fun day in west Seneca today at the pumpkin smash tourney. We lost the first elimination game 2-1 after going 2-0 in pool. My daughter hit an absolute bomb, cleared the fence in left center by 30'! Solid celebration too lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro3 points

10/10 Went 1 for three today. I won’t bore you with the two non recoveries. I received a call from a youth hunter’s uncle this evening, telling me his nephew had shot an 8 pointer. Immediately after the shot, they were hit with a torrential downpour. The buck had run into the woods on the far side of the field and they didn’t know exactly where he entered. They did the right thing by backing out and calling me after not finding blood. I walked Luna along the edge of the field to see if she’d pick a trail and enter the woods. She chose one and in we went, but it was obvious she wasn’t locked on to anything, so we went back to the field. The second trail she picked was the correct one as we found blood pretty quickly. We ended up finding the buck, still alive, 235 yards from where he was shot. I quickly dispatched him and the celebration began. This 14 year old hunter was a whopping 3 and a half hours into his hunting career when he shot this bruiser. I’ll be curious to hear the weight.....easily 200 plus. Congratulations John!3 points

Progress. Even saw a few deer while installing the cabinet knobs on the plexiglass windows! First pic, you can see a deer a little right of the cabinet knob...last pic is zoomed in. Protective film still on plexiglass until complete. Building the door on some horses tomorrow, and then the ladder is very last.3 points

Pull in to the cabin, there's a coyote in the field. Snuck up to about 30 yards and winged him with the pistol. Probably would have had better luck with the bow.2 points

Lame, maybe... selfish, definitely. I get my hopes up when I see a notification from this thread... then I'm sad when its just a "congrats" comment. Obviously the @The_Real_TCIII thumb injury pics would get to stay... that was part of the harvest. As for the beers... I still have one left, but they were great. I've had a few sour beers that weren't that good. But a well-made sour DIPA seems to be a different beast. Tons of flavor.2 points

Been in Pa for a few days so I haven't been able to get internet. We go every year for our last of the season camping trip. Saw a lot of elk in the Benezete area. Heard a lot of bugling! It's so cool to see elk only a 3 hour drive from Buffalo! Wish I could win the lottery and draw a tag!2 points
