I got my first buck with me bow, have been bow hunting for about 8 years and have only been able to get shots at doe's. He was about 15 yards when I took the shot, I hit a little higher than I would have liked but he still went down. He ran about 50-60 yards before going down. Thankfully I heard him go down as there was not blood trail, a nice big exit hole but no blood until the spot he went down. I have to go out and look for the arrow a little more I wasn't able to find it at the time. The picture isn't the greatest, it was getting dark and I wanted to get him dressed and hung as soon as possible. Damn, had a deflection off of a rose bush and spined her. Had to put a follow-up in the pump station. Not exactly how it was supposed to go down

My oldest who is 8 spent his first time in a tree stand with me when he was 3.5 The kid is absolutely hooked to this day, and now his younger brother is as well. He has been with me for an opening day turkey kill, and opening day buck kill. He loves going to our leases and riding the atv, setting up blinds and just having fun. I told him this year we are going to start to develop patience. We are trying to pass on small does and bucks....looking to shoot a mature deer instead. Work has been crazy. Getting time off that is convenient is tough in my role. Part of the deal. Had to cancel a 5-day vacation this spring. Pick your battles I guess. I picked mine yesterday. Told my boss, who is less than a year into his current role that I am taking my two weeks in November like I always do. Thought for sure this would be the year that I get the pushback on it given how hectic things are/have been. I have made it pretty clear that it's a non-negotiable for me and thankfully it is still respected when the big picture is taken into account. Off Nov 5 through Nov 20. 16 days of hunting and no work.

Just take him for a walk in the woods, maybe a short sit with some snacks and a chat and call it good. Quality time is the best. I took my oldest for a one time deer hunting hedge row sit when he was 5. Showed him the grunt call and told him to try and be still and have at it. Sounded like a deer party for 30min lol. Lo and behold a he calls up a small buck that I dutifully shot. He wasn't impressed but it's still my best hunting memory 15 yrs later.

Wow what an exciting hunt. This guy was within 60-70yds cross wind but good wind for over an hour. Thick and I never saw him. But have photos coming my way and departing after dark. It was close. On my feet the whole time. Pics coming and going. Lol and a split g2

Ok I decided I am going to hunt the lull exclusively. And only during temps over 70. Too easy during the cold rut.

Coming out heavy at 6yrs old! They do it all with me. Lots of snacks and short sits, turkeys in a blind work great!

The doe groups are moving. 7 deer so far in range.

Went out last night with my brother, we decided to get super aggressive and get as close to bedding as possible. This motivation was driven by the fact that our previous sits were just a bit too far away and we didn't see movement before darkness set in. Well I am glad we did that because as it turned out there were absolutely no deer in the bedding area of the first place we stopped. We walked all around there and didn't bump one deer. With that knowledge and the fact that it was just about 4pm we called a hail mary and went to another piece of public with the idea to just a hunt/scout. I have learned so much doing these scouting focused hunts and it is the third time in less than a week where we jumped a doe exactly where I would expect her to jump from a bed. The only problem is I realize the obviousness after the fact. I just need to slow down a little bit more, look around and think just a little bit longer and I think I can actually get one before they run. Now this is super hard with a bow, if I would of had my muzzleloader or rifle it woulda been a done deal. I am in a good state of mind though and gaining confidence. Entering the season my e-scouting skills were pretty high but my in the woods in the moment hunting awareness has been less than ideal. All of these encounters are slowly but surely building up that skillset as well. Next hunts will be this weekend in the ADX with a muzzleloader. The odds are low but the foliage is peak, the beers will be ice cold and I will have a smile on my face no matter what... October Lull my ass!

Just stopped for a shower at a KOA IN 3 Forks Montana. That was definitely needed. About 4 more hours of driving and we will be to our spot. I will most likely not have reception there so hope to fill this with pics in a week or so.

Natalie started at 5. She would sit a good hour before she wanted to go look for the deer. Lol

My daughter was 5 her first time out with me. Snacks, books, tablet, sleeping bag whatever it took to keep her comfortable and happy for an hour or so. She was so intrigued about hunting from the first time I brought a deer home to butcher she sat in the garage with me as I skinned and quartered it. She’s now 12 and finally was able to hunt herself this past weekend. You won’t see deer with a 5 year old in the stand but it also won’t matter to you. Daughters team just finished regular season of Volleyball tonight. They’ve only lossed one game all year. Think they went 8-1 and only lost 5 sets all year. So going into next weeks division tournament they are seeded #2. top 2 teams advance to the sectional tournament the following week. They have a great team and have a chance to make a run if they can get in. I’ll try to keep this updated as long as they keep winning.

Keep your nose in the wind, and your eyes on the skyline..... You really CAN smell elk if they are upwind of you, even at distances of 100 yds plus...That can make or break a hunt if you are hunting in timber...

Buddy of mine picked these up for me as a gift cause he knows I'm into hunting. I appreciated the gift but after trying them on a hunt I decided they were too large and heavy to be used for mobile hunting, would work much better for a long term set, so I decided to modify them myself. I cut them down to 22" and eliminated the middle step since they were entirely too close together for me anyway. I also eliminated the plastic washers and tightened the bolts down since the folding step feature was more annoying than anything and made a bunch of noise. They are much lighter although still probably 10-15lbs ish and more packable now being able to fit on my back.

This past monday i took my daughter out for the second year in a row. She is 5. We sit in a ground blind and watch the squirrels. She loves getting out in the woods. I never plan on seeing anything, she walks like a heard of elephants through the leaves. That's not the point of the trip though.

I started taking my son out when he was 6 or 7 to help clear trails and set up stands before the season. I learned the same lesson about snacks and the cold after our first cold morning. Now my daughter (7yrs) is dying to go out. She came out last weekend to clear a new trail and it's all I have heard about this week. They are no different than any of us. They have their gear all laid out and a plan on how the whole thing is going to go down. It's like taking a kid fishing, don't plan on getting any fishing done yourself just enjoy the time with them. If you get a something it is a bonus. And don't forget the hot chocolate.

Yes and if you look closely you'll realize that I actually shot him with my 06 and put her tag on it because youth season. I'm thinking a semi-sneek slight turn to the left mount.

I pay attention to the calender more then anything ,if it's not a work day I'm going hunting .

That’s ok , it’s actually in jars… canning is the process. I bought another 20 pounds of chicken yesterday, @ , $1.69 a pound ,today I’ll break it down to small batches and vacuum pack it , already have 30 pounds canned in quart jars. Tomorrow we’re going to make and “can “ 8 quarts of chicken soup ,I’ll use some of the frozen chicken we already have . ( fifo ) Later on we’ll make and can chili , and once I shoot a large bodied buck, ill can 30 pounds of him , toughest cuts become tender and taste great . Other Pluses are, no freezer needed , keeps longer then frozen meat , no thawing needed for quick meals . You can also add favoring and spices right to the jars for a variety of different tastes. your mistake is categorizing it with spam , which fried over a campfire is pretty good though …

Did it go Bang Flop , or did it vibrate a bit before going silent ? Been there done that ! Thought I killed it on the 1st shot , but it came back to life 10 min later because I only hit the snooze button . Had to give it a second shot to finish it off !

No worries. No offense taken here. It could be worse than giving a crossbow a try, I could move to NYC and start wearing skinny jeans and a man bun.

Nothing goes into the jar when I do it. A friend sticks some garlic in, I'll add that when I cook it. My favorite way to cook it is in a cast iron skillet; saute'd with onion, garlic and red wine. After a enough wine, the meat break down into small shredded pieces with a excellent flavor. Meanwhile, some scratch (who would use instant?) mashed potatoes have been made and some beef gravy too. I plop some potatoes in the middle of the plate, then meat and some gravy. To top it off, some frozen or fresh corn off the cob. Makes it like a Shepard's Pie. Knock your socks off.......... I don't can every year and sometimes I'll skip a couple years, I'm due this year.

Shoulder issues pushed me into buying one and I was grateful, but I enjoyed my compound more , so the following year I bought a compound I could draw . Fast forward a couple more years and drawing issues again , resting , popping ibuprofen and the pain is gone ,we’ll see on drawing in stand this sat . Its great knowing I have a back up plan even if it’s weeks away , enjoy !

It's funny there is more real estate on the front of a box taken up by what IS NOT in the cereal these days than what is. I miss the days of where's waldo on the back

Crossbow require similar practice and knowing the yardage and arrow drop. Yes slightly easier than a bow but doesnt make it rifle easy. GoodLuck!!
