  3. I got a late start this morning and never got on stand until around 7:25am, legal shooting time was coming fast! It seemed like I was there longer but the time of my cell phone pics says 8:25am and it only took 5-7 minutes to reload, climb down and waddle the 70 yards or so to the buck. He came in with a doe and was trailing her. Momentarily I considered shooting her as I figured the shadowy figure in back was going to be her fawn and they SHOULD have got my scent any second. She flicked her tail a few times and continued to head towards the little creek. Then she jumped across the creek and headed up the other side. I had just noticed the horns on the second deer and figured; don't blow it, take your time. He took two steps up the bank and stepped into my window, BANG and down he went. Nary a twitch................ I used my NULA smokeless ML with Parker 275gr BE bullets. I killed him out of the same stand I shot the archery buck from. I could tell he wasn't the same size body as the other buck so didn't call for dragging help but wished I would have! He only weighed 130# but the drag is mostly uphill. Got him home, weighed, hung and skinned. I'll get cutting tomorrow AFTER I take my sweetie pie for brunch.

  4. I killed an 8 point this morning but I'm too tired to do anything with the he pics now. Tough uphill drag, hoist into truck, drive home, unload, weigh, hang, skin and take shower. I'm shot; pics and story later.

  8. So I got this idea to build my own lifetime target from AT. Thirdhandarchery.com came up with the simple to follow plans. Pretty easy to make as long as you know how to use a power saw, a drill and a hammer. Dimensions are 48" x 48" x 12". I put caster wheels for easy movement on smooth pavement. For the frame I used exterior plywood 3/4" Pre cut to 48" x 24" . For the trim I used 2" x2" (cut to length and mitre cut) pine wood and I stained the whole target with chestnut red oil based stain. I used black plastic sheeting for interior face on both sides to hold in the clothes and stapled the archery skins on top. Then I nailed the trim around the frame using 1 1/2" trim nails. The skins were $36 shipped from thirdhand archery. The wood ran me about $40 total. Took me about 3 weekends to do it as I did a little at a time. Just need to get more clothes to stuff it with. I'm no carpenter by any means but I'm quite pleased. Although I would like to put some etchings on the side with my wood burning tool, here are some photos for now:

  11. So I came up again this weekend to pick up my snowmobile and hunt a other weekend. I didn't see anything this morning. Got the snowmobile this morning put it in the garage and decided to load the wood ring. A neighbor stopped by on his old 89 quad. I heard him puttering up the trail. He lives about 1/4 mile away from me and between us is swamp and thick trees that you can't even walk through As we are talking I see movement deep in the woods. I tell him turn around and look their is a deer walking right there walking in the woods. I tell him I think it has antlers. I wasn't going to look any further. I said to him you know what I am going to grab my gun and circle around the woods on my quad see what that is. I was gone. I got off the quad and start walking towards my tree stand to where i think the deer will be going to be. As I am walking down my towards my tree stand I can see the deer out of the corner of my eye at 75 yards looking straight at me stock still. I duck behind a tree adjust my scope from 3 to 9 to confirm its not a big doe. Well there he was. He is the same deer that walked within 10' of me a week before opening day and same guy that I had in my sites on opening day and my gun didn't shoot. It was dirty. 1 shot it was over and good thing he ran 2 steps and dropped. DONE. When I tried to shoot a location shot for my neighbor to find me the gun again just clicked. Not the best hunting story. I do wish I did get him from my hunting stand but I look at it this way. 1-he walked with in 10' of me week before opening day 2-I had him in my sites on opening day and gun didn't work 3- I came back again for another weekend 4- he was shot right in the middle of my small property The last picture is him the week before opening day walking 10' from me. He is the king of our mountain area. I said a prayer and thank God and the deer. For a safe and rewarding season. I spend a lot of weekends scouting looking etc. He will be mounted. He is 205 lbs after field dressed.

  12. Not a pretty rack, but a mature buck none the less. From the spread at the antler bases I guess about 3 1/2 years old. Most challenging shot I ever made. 120 yds, 20yds inside the brush. Iron (peep) sights, facing almost straight on. All I could see was his chest, the top of his legs & the white spot on his nose. I had to study the sight picture for a few reference point on the tree that was next to him as when I looked through the aperture I had a hard time picking an aim point on the deer's chest. I hit him dead center through the windpipe just above the midpoint between his chin & brisket. 160gr Hornady FTX over 49.5grs of Rl-17. 2500 fps Mv At the shot there was dead silence & no movement where the deer was standing. After watching the spot for several minutes & got down from my tripod & walked to the edge of the brush before I could see him. From the way he was bunched up he must have pitched down nose 1st. The bullet never entered the chest cavity. It must have taken out the spine.I hope to find the bullet when we butcher him. If you look cloesly, about 1/2 way between the muzzle & the left edge you can see the gray roof of the tripod stand 120 yds disdtant. Here is a zoomed shot from where the deer was laying. I think he was standing a little to the left as that large tree on the edge of the brush was what I used as a sight reference.

  13. Friday morning, a couple of friends and I were hunting, moving deer around for each other. We successfully moved a few deer around but we couldn't fill the remaining doe tag. Getting towards noon, 2 of us quit to eat. I had to work through the afternoon. While eating, the remaining member of our party called to say he just shot a nice 8 point that was sneaking through. I suspect we moved this deer - I had moved a large, single deer - and it was trying to get back to its hidey hole.

  17. There are some common misconceptions about some of the premium bullets.. Nosler partitions are actually a very fast expanding bullet. The front expands quickly and they tend to shed all of the lead in the nose. However, the rear section stays intact and keeps penetrating, usually retaining about 60% of the bullet weight..Entrance holes from partitions are usually bigger than exits..I have a 160 grain 7mm partition at hand that penetrated about 2 feet of Alaska bull moose and still weighs 105 grains. Barnes X type bullets expand well, but don't cause the violent tissue disruption of some lead bullets. They do raise merry hell along their path, however, retaining nearly 100% of their weight and nearly always exiting, leaving about a 2" exit hole which results in a blood trail that Stevie Wonder could follow. I've shot perhaps 20 game animals now with Barnes bullets, one moose, one caribou and the rest deer, and they kill as well and as quickly as the Nosler Ballistic tips that I used for years prior. As far as I am concerned there is NO down side to using barnes bullets on any size game animals, as long as they group well in your rifle. They are not cheap, but neither are other premium bullets made by Nosler, Swift, Woodleigh, and other manufacturers.

  23. You only legally need to be off the shoulder and can not shoot across a roadway....I have a couple spots I hunt relatively close to roadways and have taken deer, but I bow hunt those locations because they are relatively urban areas.

  24. End of season for me today. tried out a new spot and had only a pajr come in. two shots and two ducks down. my lab was watching and sadly broke when one splashed down. she made a nice retrieve though. the duck still had a bit left in him and was flapping around. my lab hndled it great and made a few passes at it and grabbed it by the neck finally. flappping didnt seem to bother her. overall happy though vot to work on the breaking aspect.

  27. Dead Truck & Road Kill: Went to visit my father in the hospital Friday afternoon, then started the drive upstate. All started Friday night… Driving up to camp, 80 miles from home, 80 miles from camp. Truck losses an alternator on the NYS thruway. I make it to a rest stop. Whip out my AAA card, make the phone call, and say, I want a tow 80 miles to my house. 5 minutes later the operator comes back on the phone. I’m sorry, AAA is not allowed on the NYS thruway. I say excuse me, what good is the AAA??? She explains, the NYS thruway authority must tow me off the thruway, and only then can the AAA send their tow truck. Kind of like a connection flight. I need 2 tows. So I’m thinking, this will take 4 hours at best, and it totally ridiculous. So I call my friend 1 hr away who has towing equipment. Luckily he is able to rescue me, and we tow the truck back to my garage. I get home at midnight. 8am Saturday morning, run down to the local parts store. Buy an alternator, get the truck back running again by 10am. Figured, hey, might as well visit my father in the hospital again, and then try another trip upstate. Finally make it to my hunting spot by 2pm, and I spend 3 hours sitting. Only lost 1/2 day in the woods. No deer anywhere, no sign, at least I got out for a bit. So I’m driving home. Almost back to the highway, and the car in front of me blasts a doe. So I stop, the driver is ok, but stunned. The doe is on the side of the road suffering. Back legs are not working; she is trying to get up with her front legs. Either both her back legs were broken, or a spinal injury. The car was still drivable... just some hood damage. I get the driver to call the cops, he didn’t want too. But I know he must report it. Finally the cop comes, writes the accident report, and he has to finish the deer. He decides to use his 12 gauge shotgun, rather than his pistol. Rather than shooting the deer in the head, he uses 2 slugs. 1 through the back strap, and the other through the gut. He did it from 10 feet away, and didn’t really aim. He wasn't a hunter, just a cop doing his job. I really should have advised him what to do. But I have never been in this situation before. No one wants the deer, so I ask the cop for a tag. He gladly gives me a tag. He wouldn’t let me gut the deer on some person’s front lawn. But he helps me load the deer into my truck. So now I have an ungutted deer….thinking what is the best plan. I decided to drive 2 ½- 3 hrs to my butcher, and we gutted it at the butcher. The gut was starting to swell. The skin was cool, but the interior was still hot. I figured 3 hours is still ok not to gut a deer. I think the meat is ok…. the butcher thinks it's ok.. Didn’t have any odors. Definitely lost 1 back-strap from the slug. At least I got meat, and everyone was happy the deer didn’t go to waste. And I thanked the guy for hitting the deer  He didn't think it was too funny. And I feel good about it, because I lost a doe on opening day. So at least this doe didn't go to waste.

  28. To drink, I prefer Genny "cream ale" for lunch, "light" for supper, and "12-horse" for special occasions. For cooking, plain "red-label" Genny. By pure coincidence, I just posted this picture on another thread in the taxidermy section, but you can see the tap-handles for three of them on the front the "Beer-fridge" behind our bar.

  32. determined. You guys and gals really need to be acknowledged at how hard and dedicated you still are at the end of season. I mean, I hunt archery very hard and then maybe a day or two with the gun but to continue all the way up to the end is awesome. I love reading the live thread and notice sightings are a rare thing this late but you keep at it... Go shoot some some big guys!

  33. Nice buck, Larry... CONGRATS, my friend !! I killed one also....Skinny little 4 point, NO drag at all , shot him in the food plot, drove the truck right up to him and dragged his pathetic little butt right up into the bed..!! I passed one up today in PA that was twice as big because I could not be sure he met their silly AR requirements.. Over all, I'm happy as a clam and I am going to sleep in tomorrow morning and snuggle up to the Mermaid..I may even shave so she might let me kiss her !

  36. Could be, but the deer around here ate themselves outv of house & home several years back & it's a hardscrabbke existance for them. not a lot af agriculture or mast. They survive on mostly brouse after the frosts hit. 2 1/2 year olds around here usualy have spindlier beams & less splay at the bases. One things for sure, he ain't no yearling. The fact that I shot him with my Dad's rifle that he bought 57 years ago really made it quite a thrill. Dad shot 2 bucks with that rifle, one in 1958 right after he bought it & just beforfe we moved to Chicago & another in 1967 after we moived back to P. Even though he made good killing shoits, the 180gr Corlocks didn't open up all that fast & both deer ran far enough that other hiuntes shot them & clamied them. AS I walked back to the house to get my tractor I felt like my Dad was smilling down on me as he would have been proud to take that buck. If I had been using my 8X57 I probably wouldn't have shot him because I've killed better bucks with it & it can thread a neddle at 120 yards. That's the 1st deer I've killed with iron sights since my last ML kill in 2001 & it sure isn't as easy as using optics.

  45. Just as I put my phone down a small doe pokes it's head out at 60 yds. Hangs around a few mins and goes back in the brush. Had broadside shot but did not take her. If I'm going to get dirty now it needs to be a nice buck. Couple more mins and I'm done. - Deerthug

  46. It sickens me to reply to your posts, but this one is real easy. If the government can restrict people on some list from buying guns, they will see to it that anyone they don't want to own one is put on the list. It's that simple. When the law allows people to contest being on the list, prior to being put on it, allowing Constitutional due process, then maybe it would legal. What the dumbass Democrats want is not legal. It's tyranny. Get it? And since you have asked, I'll tell you. The Democrats are the REAL danger to America!
