  1. She is taking on her older brother twice her weight! They are getting along great. I am so happy with her. Basically potty trained in two weeks. It helps if you have another dog to help her along and of course me to take her out at 3am...omg!

  2. Today I got the latest issue of "New York Outdoors" and on the front page is an article announcing the death of Charles Alsheimer. It was noted on this site a couple days ago that he had died recently. I won't go into all the details of the article as I'm getting tired but, one thing that struck me was a portion of a quote that a few guys on here (and you KNOW who you are) should read and really think about. The quote is this "I learned long ago that a hunter's life is not about the antlers, it's about the joy of the journey". Simple but powerful stuff and something I hope I never loose sight of. RIP Charles Alsheimer

  3. Hell of a better look for my sons Axis in 7-08!!! He picked everything out and paid for it himself with a combination of Birthday, Christmas and dog walking money. He’s got his priorities straight at 14, at least for now lol.

  6. Onto 2018. My dad hunted 2pm - 630pm tonight in hopes of seeing a yote/bobcat/fox. He didn’t see any but around 3pm he kicked up 2 nice bucks (1 at least 8pt and 1 at least 6pt) along with a doe. All three were together. Maybe the doe was actually a buck that dropped antlers already? Anyway, he said cams have lots of pics of bucks so next time I go there I’ll take a look and post the pics. 7. "My mom wrote this song: 'Fishing in the Sky' about 30 years ago and recorded it on a cassette tape. Last year when Travis and I were up here for Christmas, we listened to it. Travis has been recording some music lately; and about three weeks ago, I pitched the idea to Travis to get the lyrics and look into recording it. He remembered the song, and was genuinely interested. Today, I had the pleasure of sharing the finished product with my mom. Her reaction is priceless."

  16. It really surprises me that people are so quick to criticize the personality and style of this President. He has been straight with the press, the public, and his constituents. His tweets are simply efforts to thwart a very biased press coverage and reach citizens directly with actual facts of his accomplishments. Is he un-presidential? ..... Thank God, yes. He is a president that unlike all of his recent predecessors is treating his campaign promises as his bond. Now there is something new and unique. Does he relate in Plain English? ..... Well, by golly he does. That has not been a feature of those polished professional politicians that we have become used to having populated the office. How un-presidential (thankfully). Is he putting the welfare of our country first? Well, in fact he is. It has been a long time since we have seen any U.S President even think about such a concept. What is the matter that he is not paying gobs of money to the Iranians so that they can finance terrorists to attack us. Isn't that kind of the model of the prior President who apparently established the way his critics expect Presidents to behave. Why isn't this guy giving away the farm to all the global environmentalists. He is trying to establish the thought that negotiation is not a synonym for "give-away". And this guy wants to control our borders and the free-for-all access of drug runners and terrorist and all those who hunger for our endless freebies? .... how un-presidential! He has seen to it that the media is no longer running the country. His tweets have negated their strangle-hold on American policy, and we are being forced to make our politicians accountable to the people that vote them into office instead to the liberal demands of the mainstream media. What a novel concept and how absolutely un-presidential. Yes, given the presidential models established by those of recent decades, President Trump does not emulate any of them. Therefore he is guilty of being un-presidential, and thank God for that. No we didn't vote for the same old- reruns of the lib's idea of what they think Presidents should be. Trump's vision and goals are clear, unwavering, transparent, and focused on every issue that he raised during the campaign. Amazingly he seems determined to actually fulfill as many of those campaign promises as humanly possible. Now all we need is to break the inertia of the swamp and let him continue to guide the progress of his and our goals. If that turns out to be un-presidential I say bring it on!

  17. Just saw this on facebook Hi, I'm Oprah. I'm the spokesperson for Weight Watchers but can't control my weight. I tell you how to run your marriage but I can't commit to marriage. I tell you how to raise your kids but I'm too selfish to have any. But hey, I'm black and a woman, so I check all the boxes. Even though I knew about Weinstein, I support the #metoo movement. I have to add, instead of berating Hollywood elitist liberals for years of sexual abuse, child molestation and glorification of graphic violence, I will distract you with an evil story of despicable racism from 60 years ago!!! That way, we can all shout and raise our fists and pretend to be better than everyone else!!

  18. “I hunt because I love the entire process: the preparations, the excitement, and sustained suspense of trying to match my woodslore against the finely honed instincts of these creatures. On most days spent in the woods, I come home with an honestly earned feeling that something good has taken place. It makes no difference whether or not I got anything: it has to do with how the day was spent.” Fred Bear

  21. I will say that if Trump gets most of his agenda through, and keeps his nose clean, he will wind up so wildly popular that it won't matter who the Democrats put up. This tax cut has almost sealed the deal. Now, if he can score a homerun with health care and patch up the security leaks along our southern border, he will win in a landslide election. I think this Democrat obstructionism is the final nail in their coffin. Oprah and all the pinkos that the Dems can dredge up will not be able to turn back the Trump tide. Their entire party platform consists only of a hatred of Trump. There is no substance to it. There is nothing that they are standing for that the American public will tolerate or see as a positive vision. As the last of the straws that they are grasping for continues to fall apart they will complete their free-fall into oblivion. Chuckie and Nancy are leading their party to absolute destruction. It's not really a good thing in the long run because I am a believer in a minimum of a two-party political system. But unless the Republicans self-destruct, we may be heading for a one-party system.

  23. When I was a young fellow I had a totally different mindset when it came to any kind of hunting. I was so driven to be successful and about as gung-ho as one can get, considered any hunt to be a bust if I came home empty handed. I would endure all kinds of foul weather to make successful hunts happen, the right cold or wet weather gear will make things bearable but things will still be tough. Yes I killed stuff and I have to say when it is cold like it is now I have had pretty good luck but I went through some pretty miserable hunts to get it done. As an old guy today I am a fair weather boy and when I hunt I want to enjoy myself and be halfway comfortable, do not take nowhere near the game I once did, I find myself letting a lot a stuff walk but I still enjoy myself just being out there. 26. Many years ago, in a galaxy far away, my father in law, who was dairy farmer, offered me some corned beef that he had made himself... He wasn't exactly a gourmet beef guy...He milked Holsteins , and if one of those old black and white grannies slipped on the ice in the barnyard and SPLIT herself, that was his beef.... He had perhaps a 40 gallon crock in his dug cellar... He fished around in the crock and brought up the ugliest looking piece of beef I had ever seen..I could not tell which part of the cow it had come from.. I took it home and cooked it up and it was the best corned beef I ever had... Since then, I have made corned venison that tasted pretty good, but I never have had any better corned beef..

  34. I think that a lot of guys that don't like the scopes in these situations and don't want to use them just haven't had enough experience with them. I see more guys shoulder the gun, fidget to get a clear view of the scope and then try to acquire the target looking through the scope. Properly set up, if you shoulder the gun with your eyes closed, then open your eyes the full scope view should be there. If not it isn't set up right for you. The other mistake I see people make is trying to find the target through the scope. Properly set up if you keep your eyes on the target and shoulder the gun with a low mag scope you will be on target even if it is moving. You are bringing the scope into your line of sight not hunting for the target. IMO

  35. I think brush gun is kind of defined by where you live. Most all my deer hunting is in northern woodland, where a true 100yard shot through the woods is an exception, 50 yards frequently stretching it. I used to hunt southern tier hedgerows a lot, where deer frequently could be seen at 25 yards or less, but very thick brush, goldenrod, etc. covered most of them. We used to brag up our slug guns for down south, but now that we can use rifles with scopes and pick our shots better, we have much better success. No substitute for picking your clear shot. That said, I prefer my .308 savage lever for most any conditions. I will not be shooting through brush to make a shot.

  37. I too would wait for the land owner to arrive after calling and give him half the meat and properly remove any blood sign I left I his fallen leaves. Please know that I also never remove the tag from mattresses, roll through stop signs in parking lots, jaywalk, check a text while driving or, God forbid, speed. I also read the entire disclaimer before clicking “I agree” C’mon Man! Grab YOUR deer and go about your day-if I see the owner later I’ll let him/her know about the recovery and walk her/him through the process if so desired. Bigger fish to fry! 38. i wouldn't be caught dead with see thru mounts. The worst part is that most are of poor quality. Typically made of cheap quality aluminum. For a big game rifle if mounts are not made of solid steel, i don't want them.

  39. See thru scope mounts are like having a wife and a girl friend. Neither are ever happy and it don't work out the way you wanted it to. It's one of the other. If your comb on your stock allows proper cheek weld for rifle sights then your face is floating when attempting to look through the scope and if you have a raised comb "Monte Carlo" stock with see throughs it's way too hard to burry your face low enough to use the irons. 40. I was involved in the Marine Corps testing when they were going from Iron sights to optics and target engagement time and accuracy improved substantially when going to a 4X optic over the standard iron sights on a M16/M4. It's been proven other places as well. Even on handguns the Trend is to use optics because target engagement is faster. The only time irons have an edge over an optic in the brush is in snow and rain because flipping caps open takes too long even if you practice it. A low power optic has everything over irons in the brush, the biggest advantage is field of view. Irons cover too much of the target on a running deer when you're trying to pick your hole, peeps are better but still cover way more than an optic. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  44. Although I love my tikka's the 7mm-08 doesn't meet my needs for a brush cartridge. Even with the best bullets the likelihood of a bullet going end for end of a deer giving me 2 holes at any angle. This tikka does after being rebored to 35whelen and cut to "carbine" length. The 225gn Barnes went in front shoulder on a hard angle and exited the the ass cheek of this old ADK buck. On a running shot across the swamp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
