  3. Finally saw one of the big boys on his feet during daylight hours today. Watched him coming in from about 250 yards, but when he got to about 80 yards, he veered off the path that would have taken him 25 yards from me! The wind was so strong and gusty that he couldn't hear my grunts. Damn it!! About 5 min later, he appeared ~80 yards to my other side, but again, the wind was rippin' so bad that he couldn't hear my grunts! Hopefully, he'll pull that stunt again on a much less windy day! 95% sure it was this buck.

  9. Haha, I’ll never make an excuse for a buck I shoot and hate hearing the I thought he was bigger but I will say there was some ground shrinkage. I was poking my way on the top of a big ravine and heard crashing looked down seen a doe running and a white rack behind her she brought him by at 25yds I yelled he stopped and I shot him. I knew he wasn’t a giant but I didn’t expect to see that. I was shaking like a leaf after, it was an exciting hunt and I watched him die, couldn’t be happier! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  12. Mikey reporting late from my sit yesterday. I got settled in a tree around 3.15. I had high hopes for the spot, which were fading as the light was fading. At 4.30 a buck came out of the swamp and was about to cruise past me at 40 yds. His path was not going to take him any closer to me,so i grabbed my rattle bag. I have used it before, but never had a buck react like this one. He stopped and came back towards me as he was trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. He was i think a 2.5 year old with a decent enough rack. I drew my bow back but he hung up at 30+ yds behind some brush. Then he walked behind the tree i was in without giving me a shot. Now i had to do the 180,which i managed without alerting him..He continued a little closer and i drew back again and was waiting for him to step into a nice little opening. He was slight quartering towards me and stopped one step shy of the opening before raising his head and sniffing me out. He was not on super high alert, but also didn't want to come closer. He skirted this way and that way, never giving me a shot. This continued until dark. That was about as exciting as it gets without actually shooting a deer. One of these days i will have to connect,i certainly have been close enough several times this season.

  14. Considered getting a decoy for the past few years. After my sit this morning, I really think that would have brought that big buck in for a shot yesterday. He was only 80 yards away, but it was so windy that he couldn't hear my grunts. The wind was wrong, so he wasn't downwind of my estrus scent either. Think if I had a visual aid out there, it would have made all the difference. Decided to run out and get a decoy. Yeah, it's suppose to be a little buck, but I just didn't put the antlers on! 'Tis the season for love, not fighting!! LOL We'll see how it goes.... Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

  17. I had a pretty eventful afternoon and early evening sit. At 2:30, while I was enjoying some extreme tree surfing, this guy cruised by at 10 yards. So, its official, my impending tag soup for this season will be voluntary as a result of this guy getting a pass: At a little after 4 I was covered up in Doe, but not on the menu. As I was heading home after last light I was stopped in my tracks by a powerful whiff of mature Buck. I stood their sniffing the air and trying to gauge wind direction. Suddenly, about 30 yards upwind, bedded in some Golden Rod, the big 8 point I caught on camera a few days ago jumped up and ran into the deep woods, right where I had come from. So, at 5:15 he was still bedded. Now I need to formulate a strategy to hunt this Golden Rod patch.

  18. My son and I both had deer on the ground 200 yards apart, 10 minutes after getting to our stands on Sunday morning. It was the most amazing thing, we arrived lated, bumped 3 on the way in and didnt even have time to really get settled when the action began and texts started flying! I shot a doe and he arrowed this this big 8 at 22 yards, nose to the ground hot on the trail of the few we bumped only a few minutes before. I swear it is the fattest heaviest buck I have ever seen, taxidermist is keeping the jaw to age it. His first words were “oh man thats an old deer!” My son said he was shaking so bad, like never before and thought for sure he would blow it, but pulled it together! I couldnt be more happy for him! For size reference, he is 6’2” 220... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. A couple members and I have mentioned this and it's worth checking out cause I'm hooked..... if you're like me and work at their computer a lot but need frequent distractions, watch this season of THE HUNTING PUBLIC.. it's a Youtube channel of some hunting buddies, who are very knowledgeable about the outdoors and travel the midwest on mostly public property and upload their experiences. I know a lot of us are on private land but there's something to learn with each video because they have to put in time and research to study every piece to a successful hunt... honestly if I put in as much time as they did my wife would certainly divorce me.. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzlnaIrdxwJITyrESOReqxg

  30. Out for an early morning sit prior to work in 3G. Situated at a pinch point in a rock wall overlooking hardwood flats. West wind and about 50 degrees. Hunting from the ground pinched between two trees growing next to a rock wall. About 10 mins after legal, heard rustling to the east and figured squirrel. Then saw movement, nice bodied young deer. Spike with slight fork on one side. Unfortunately, dead in the wrong spot with the wind. He made his way to the pinch point and pauses. Licks his nose heavy and worked the wind. I knew he would wind me. Looking dead at me but no clue I was there. He continues to work the wind and then smells me. Tail up and turns, slow run off back where he came from. Stops and looks over his shoulder, then walks 90 degrees parallel to me. Slowly moving, nosing through the leaves and munching on mast. I wait for him to step behind a tree and draw. He moves forward, completely broadside and I bleat to stop him. About 10+ yards away. Relax, let the arrow go, hear the arrow hit him and pass through. He kicks and runs about 50 yards, then slow walk off along a ridgeline. Watch him walk off and mark the point of visual loss. Uggh, I am thinking miss, liver or non-fatal hit. Gave it 30 minutes before I looked for arrow. Found the arrow embedded in a rotted blow down. Heavy dark blood. Uggh, liver shot. On the fence on what to do. Let him sit and search later or push him. I go back to point of impact. No hair visible, track is clear but no blood. Uggh again. Decide to leave him be but walk along a ridge that I can glass back where I lost him. Sit down on the ridge and hit the binos. Spot white belly. Dead deer. Go back to the point of impact and trace his trail. Not a spot of blood visible. Spike is stone dead when I get there. Very little blood outside his body or in bed. Body cavity was filled with blood when I field dressed him. Liver was shredded. In hindsight three mistakes. I'd love to tell you the deer turned on the shot and that's why I hit back, but I'd be lying. First, mistake was target panic, I aimed for deer and not a spot. Second, I pulled the shot and had poor follow through. Third, I didn't follow the arrow and confirm point of impact. I am fortunate and grateful for having taken and found the deer quickly. It was my first recurve kill and I have plenty to learn. Deer is hanging, cavity packed with ice and ready for skinning quartering tonight. Not a p&y but a trophy to me and will provide good food for the family. Many thanks to Moog for giving me advice on getting started with the recurve. I probably will bring out the crossbow to fill doe tags, but bring the recurve back out for regular season. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk

  34. I've killed two deer with studded snow tires. They were both well after legal shooting time. I didn't even tag them. I think I may have had a spotlight in the console, and I definitely remember having two bags of corn in the back of the truck. You know, for the chickens..

  35. Okay, let me reword this, why would "anybody shoot at 50 yards". Can you hit where you are aiming at 50 yards? Yes. You can probably sight in for 100 yards and hold a reasonable group. But now throw in the variables. Was it 50 yards or 55 yards? The further out you go, the drop increases dramatically. Was there any wind? Was there anything that could deflect the shot; branches, leaves? Then there are those nasty laws of physics. Can you get the penetration you need if you hit rib on the way in? Nothing against crossbows. So without hijacking the thread, I've stated my point.

  37. It would be cool if a neighbor flew a drone over with a beer attached to it . I'm sure more people could get into it if the drone was bringing a gift.

  38. Lets be real. I was at a party a few years ago, one of my buddy's neighbors few a drone over us, it just felt weird that someone we didn't know was watching us. That's the beauty of the forums, all the different opinions. We went from corn to child molesters to chickens, now drones, what's next, studded snow tires?

  39. Here is my hope and maybe I am being too optimistic. I REALLY hope Ginsberg goes out very shortly. Just to have a very nice cushion. I also am trying to put a big spin on our state election. Let's say they pass a Safe Act 2 and really stick it to us. Even with the current make up of SCOTUS, Does Safe Act 1 and 2 become THE test cases that answers the questions of the 2nd amendment once and for all? As a side note I got a kick out of the last few weeks with the left that have been saying that the Constitution is open for interpretation and should change with moder advances concerning the 2nd but lost their freaking minds when that same "process" was discussed about the 14th.
