  1. Ok guys, Ive been letting some stuff slide lately because I dont want to have to monitor everything that is said in every thread. I dont have time for it. I am going to start handing out vacations from the site if the constant barrages of personal attacks dont stop though. If you want to disagree with someone, by all means disagree, but just popping into threads and calling names is ridiculous, and against the forum rules. Starting right now I will not hand out warnings, if I see a personal attack, that person will be suspended from the site. If you come back and do it again, youll be banned for good.

  2. Thanks guys! I'm sticking with the Stihl chains for now. That's what I started with and feeling pretty comfortable with now. I'm running three different pitch chains on three different saws. My 12" carving bar is a 1/4" pitch .043ga..my 16" bar and chain is 3/8.., and my 18" is .325 .050. Each one has a different duty in removing wood, but in all honesty you could do it all with one pitch to some degree of detail once you get the hang of things. I'm just getting interested in some of the chain modifications and filing techniques that some carvers are using now. Once I dull up a few more chains I'll start experimenting with some of that on my own to see if there's a style that performs better for me. I started laying a little hair on this one yesterday after I posted those last pics. Just need to do some shaping on the fawn yet and get things smoothed out before I start the finish work. I may start experimenting with a little paint on these things, but I'm not sure this is the right one to start experimenting on,lol

  3. I tried this for the first time this week and cooked it last night. Wow, it turned out great! Hands down, one of the best roasts I ever made. Brined a shoulder roast in the fridge for six days and boiled it last night. No plate pics as we dug into it too quickly, was fall-apart tender. Didn’t follow any one particular recipe for the brine, rather I read a few different ones and freestyled it. Very easy prep for such a good dish! Going to try the next one in the smoker for pastrami.

  4. Speaking of sliding glass doors. There was one on the house we rented in FLA had it open most times we were home ,lots of trips in and out of the back yard . I walked into it twice , and our dog once ..... I had some electrical tape in the car, and put an X at eye level for each of us .

  6. Finally got another full log back to the pit today and didn't waste any time making more sawdust! Still quite a bit to remove from this one, and plenty of shaping left, but the hardest most critical part is over.

  9. Worked on giving the ol' stud a kid this morning and smoothing a few things out. Just kinda decided on this on the fly once I got going since I really didn't have a plan on what to do if the buck head turned out alright.

  10. Somewhat amusing story. I was laying in bed last night when my wife yells for me to come to the kitchen. She yells, there is a wolf on our deck. Of course it wasn't a wolf, but a very large husky looking dog. At least as big as our 80lb shepherd, but looked bigger. And he is literally standing there staring in our sliding glass door. Has a collar on so I assume its one of new neighbors behind our house (new houses being built). I figure I would try to find a name and number on the tag. Slowly open the door and the dog is friendly enough and Kiki is in the crate for the night. That bold dog walked right in like he owned the place and starts over to eat my dogs food. As I walk over to him, he walks away into our great room with me following and he lifts his leg to take a leak on our leather coach. Then I realize this wasn't a very good idea. Yell at him and he puts his leg down and heads to another room where I grab his collar and low and behold, not so friendly. A nice growl and I let go. I then basically push him out the back door and went back to bed. He did take a quick leak and my wife cleaned it up. Probably should have just tried to check the tag outside. I realized what a mess that could have been if he got mean in the house once he growled. In the end, I hope he made it home, but I wasn't chasing him for the info. So the moral to the story is .... don't let strange dogs in your house.

  16. I picked up an Ozark Trail knife yesterday from Wallyworld, not because I wanted the knife, but it came with a ferro rod. Neither are the best, but for $10 I was very surprised the ferro rod isn't bad, and the cheapy knife even worked to create a spark and light up some dryer lint. I was so surprised when I tested I actually made a video. LOL!

  22. I only became aware of the scale of drug problems in the region through my time teaching. The stories I heard from my students about the goings-on in their High Schools and local towns were terrifying. It seems nowhere is untouched now. We have serious cultural problems in our country. How did it become OK that drugs are no big deal, and how do we turn this deadly tide? I am at a loss. And sorry for your loss too Swamp Bucks. I keep hearing stories like this far too often now.

  23. So sorry for the loss- can’t imagine anything worse for a family I’ve been to three wakes in the past year or so for either previous students or young kids of family friends. It is a scary time for these kids. Letting your hair down looks very different today for the youth —- slamming watered down beers at a watering hole or sneaking your folks smokes was the extent of most of our partying- not so much today an they are being know. as snowflakes- imagine hearing that about your generation when you are the one dealing with the stress of growing up/ we joke but the youth of today have a hard road. I couldn’t do the school work at they are asked to do at the age they are doing it. Travel teams; personal trainers; tutors- all of these are meant for o be good for the kids but all they really do are add stress. All that plus a loss in connectivity to human contact and fake relationships on line as their world....it’s harder than we think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  24. I will go along with the fellow in the video in that it comes down to how the ammo was stored, if stored under proper conditions it remains viable for a good long time. I posted here a couple of years ago about shooting some of my reloads that were close to fifty years old, they shot reliably and the accuracy was basically the same as what it was the day I loaded it. 32. Quite honestly you shouldn't have to act like a grade-school hall monitor here. Most of this disagreement nonsense is pretty silly to begin with, and it's not adult behavior. You agree to disagree; the end. FWIW, this is the best site I belong to as far as member relations.

  36. Thoughts and prayers sent to you, and the young man's family and friends. May he find the peace he was so desperately seeking. It never was/is easy to grow up. Always harder for some than others, deciding which path to choose. Just seeing what my teenage grandsons do for school work and sports. And the pressures they are dealt, at an earlier, and earlier age, with all the varied influences out there, is down right scary. Love and communication is surely the key. But it's no guarantee anymore. Always need to stand vigilant, and willing to jump in at a moments notice when they need us. Was so much easier growing up for my age group.

  37. Absolutely! I prefer a less than medium rare for beef and venison but I make sure this bear meat gets cooked well-done. Trichinosis is not on my list of ailments to get! I will say though, even cooked well done, the bear meat has a fantastic flavor and without doubt, my favorite wild game meat. I only seasoned it with salt and pepper.

  41. Larry, I had a Win 69A also..My first rifle that was truly my own...I wish I still had it....Killed 75 woodchucks in the summer of '66, and 65 of them were shot with the 69A, since 22 hollow points were 85 cents for a box of 50, and my other chuck rifle, a Rem 722 in .222, cost $3.15 for a box of 20... The story on the Nylon 66....The Mermaid and I had breakfast with her son and DIL this morning, and Sis mentioned that she liked shooting the " black and silver" .22 that her EX used to own.... Her son said " I have it you want it " ...SO it came home with us, complete with a cheap Bushnell scope... It's her rifle and she is not interested in selling it...I just wondered what it was worth...For sure I'll have to take it out and see how it shoots...Pretty cool little rifle and really in very good condition..
