  1. A beautiful morning here. Heading over to Kennebunkport and Porpoise Harbor fishing peir today. Have had a ton of stuff going on lately. But the sound of the waves, washes everything away. And puts me in a peaceful place. My batteries are charging.

  2. I had this bird gobbling his head off Wednesday roosted on the neighbors farm about 300 yards from the end of the property I'm hunting. He flew downed seemed to be henned up that morning. Fast forward to Saturday morning when I brought my good friend and coworker hunting and helped him close the deal on that bird. We had set up early, and had the same bird roosted the same spot as Wednesday. I had thought nothing of it. Close to 400 yards from our position. Right around flydown the bird stopped gobbling. I gave some nice easy yelps with my wood haven custom glass call, and wasn't hearing any shootable birds In the area. I heard one gobble from that bird that was roosted on the neighbors property and it seemed closer, but I still hadn't thought anything of it. All of a sudden this bird gobbled 60 yards away, he had walked (probably ran) right to us. I had my buddy turn on my red dot, and turn around toward the road. At this point I had turned on my GoPro and got ready to record. I said "your shooting a bird today get your gun up". This bird crosses the road and comes at a fast pace through a small woodlot by the road and into the clearing we are in. My friend had a couple clear shots at this turkey but he kept whispering to me that he couldn't see him through the sight. It was a very stressful minute trying to keep this bird from moving away, and hoping he can take the shot. When I told my friend to turn on the red dot, he had pressed the button one time, which turns it on to the brightest setting. As he describes the whole red dot was covering the bird (as it was still very early and low light). Well he took the shot and dropped the bird. It was exciting and I shut the camera off right away, which I regret because of our insane freakout when we see what this bird actually was. I had gotten my friend his first turkey last year, and was able to get him this beautiful once in a lifetime bird this Saturday May 11, 2019. I am excited to say he will be getting the bird mounted in a gobble off the roost position from Bob at True Life Taxidermy. Bob helped us measure and record the bird to score at a whopping 104 which we will be entering into NWTF database. Here is the video. Congrats to my good friend Aric Blau on this turkey

  3. One of the funner hunts I have experienced. My best friend since a kid joined me. No gobbles off the roost and quiet until couple hens entered field. Just after gobbling ensued from a good distance out. That bird came in quick and I saw him about 70 yds in timber strutting looked like a full fan and he was gobbling. Suddenly two Jake's materialized and we made a quick decision to try the double. I'm not certain in anything associated with Turkey hunting, but I think that longbeard would of came in. No regrets as my friend and I will never forget today. Quality hunt.

  5. thought'd i'd recap my Saturday for you guys if you're interested. Wanted to get to bed around 9:30 on Friday, it'd been a long week. Didn't really get to sleep till almost 11. Alarm was set for 4:00am, but who was I kidding? Especially with one tag already punched. So I snooze the alarm and end up getting into the woods a tad before 7. This was ok with me. Typically in my woods I get opportunities right at flydown 6-7am window, or sometime after 9 in the fields. I make my way back towards the fields taking my time, clucking here and there but not trying for any shock gobbles. Around 7:15 I near the stonewall and hedgerow that separates the pines from the fields. I approach very quietly and slowly and through some brush I see some brown objects not 10 yards out from the wall. I get the binos and sure as shit one is a decent tom in full fan. I am literally 40 yards away. I take off my decoy bag and spend the next 15 agonizing minutes inching, commando crawling and cautiously making my way the next 10 yards to the wall. I now have a shot to the field (west), and the birds are about 40 yards north. The stone wall runs north-south. I can make out objects, but there's brush concealing the birds. I'm not sure if they will come into the pines and give me a 5 yard shot to the east or if they will continue in the field. Eventually I'm convinced as they work their way south that they are staying in the field. I belly slide like a snake over the rockwall and am fortunate to have a small forked sapling that is the perfect gun rest. the birds are now invisible behind the brush that is in front of me. They then appear, but have started to work their way into the field and diagonally away from me. wtf... They are at about 40 yards and still not clear of the brush. I make out 4 birds. 2 of which are jakes, a 3rd unknown and a decent 2 year old Tom. Man do cut corn fields mess with your id skills or what? I wait a minute or so for them to make a move, leery of calling and spooking. When all the sudden they start moving briskly. They were spooked. Not terrified, but spooked and I know it wasn't me. Dangit I think. coyote maybe? I make some yelps and they stop, but they're not changing their minds and they disappear over the crest of the field and out of site. I hadn't even setup shop yet and figure i'll give it 10 before getting in a spot. When out of the corner of my eye comes the neighbor. ahhhh I see now. Not a trespassing issue, but a miscommunication. What was a "hey I might try turkey this year and let you know", was confirmed. I had been really lucky the last 5 years without any competition. oh well. In a way I'm glad i didn't punch #2 on my second hunt, also less than an hour into it.

  12. Truth in hunting forums , that was my daughters shot, a few years back . Although I may use her gun this week ,for my first time out in years , I sold off my 835 turkey gun and a few other shotguns , so I have to use her 20 ga 870. I just went downstairs and looked for some tags ( got ‘Em ) and found a handful of 20ga nitro something . I’ll head out Thursday around 9 AM, no way I’m getting up, before day light to kill a turkey . I’ll post the pics by 11:00

  13. Honestly holding the recurve is the easy part and I don't think a significant disadvantage when compared to a compound - although it is some disadvantage. But shooting without a rest, with fingers and without the use of the peep site make any trad bow much more susceptible to misses due to form break down and lack of repeatability. Just my opinion. I really think that is why even with a sight, many people give up on trad bows while most can become reasonably proficient with a compound in a short period of time.

  15. I made an “Italian Pot Roast” with a venison neck I had in the freezer. Sorry, no pics, but it did happen. I will tell you what: I will never, never, ever use the neck for grind or anything else. It was awesome!! Both wife and daughter loved it and they knew where on the deer it came from!

  19. This color coded map show wny is not that different from a lot of the must hunt big buck states! Of course many will spout off nope but numbers dont lie this being said many in the state do not enter deer in recordbooks so this is only a comparison of those that do. But wny is right in the mix. 21. I consider myself a sit down comedian, so here’s my take . I’m 60 for the last two years most days I couldn’t draw my bow, so I bought an Xbow , found it big ,heavy and clumsy in a stand ,have yet to kill a deer with it ( choice , no,buck I wanted in range don’t shot does in bow ) . Then I bought Jeremy’s “ old “ bow because I can draw it , not only that I just held it at full draw for a timed two minutes , keep in mind I’ve got bad shoulders and I’m at the weakest point I’ve been in my adult life , so how long Can young strong guy hold it back ? Three minutes ? More ? I bring this up because so, many say you don’t have to draw a Xbow , true , but with today’s compounds you can draw two minutes or more ahead of time and wait . With this new compound I have no plan to use the Xbow , perhaps a little as ive yet to kill one with it and it would be a learning experience.

  22. Speed and strength are both components of power and the best PLers and OLers will utilize both their lifts. OL definitely is a learned skill and requires more precise technique than PL to reach the top. Neither use a string or arrow and neither should be included in bow season.
    2 points
  23. What I also finding interesting is Oly lifts are really power lifts ,and powerlifting movements are strength movements , but I don’t think they’ll rename them accordingly at this point . Later we can discuss why the third PL should be the standing press, and not the bench . Im off to the gym now where ,I’ll mostly sit on machines and stare at women . ( I’ve metaled in that )

  25. Fun fact, there is no such thing as “ Olympic powerlifting .” as mentioned in meme above , there is Olympic lifting ( snatch and clean and jerk ) that is an Olympic event, and Powerlifting ( bench, squat, and deadlift ) that is not an Olympic event . Carry on .

  27. A suggestion for the future- roasted garlic paste as the base of a white pizza (Mozz and ricotta). Cut the pointy ends off three heads of garlic - put cut ends up in a foil square; drizzle olive oil; fresh cracked pepper and kosher salt. Fold pouch and put in toaster over (450) for 15- 20 minutes or until mushy. Let cool- squeeze out the garlic; mash it up and thin with more oil and even some water until consistency of chunky BBQ sauce. Spread your dough and then with the back of spoon spread the paste like a sauce but use a lot less than tomato sauce. Make sure to hit the crust with the garlic paste. 28. Tried an aging kit. Did a small rib roast. Raining so I cooked one in the cast iron then to the oven to finish it off. It wasn’t bad but to me it’s not worth the wait. I’d rather have a 28 hour old steak then a 28 day. Just me I have to kits left if anyone wants to give it a shot. All you need is the meat, vacuum sealer and a refrigerator. 29. The Mrs. let me out for a couple hours today. Found 5 and some dryads saddle. I still say its a bit early. Weather is gonna be a bit chilly for a few more days which should keep them at bay til next weekend. I'd much rather a trickle season than a short one. However, they are out there. So scour those south/west slopes. Sent from my LGMP260 using Tapatalk

  30. No matter their age . Our two travel , oldest goes out West, hiking , Mrs. hates when folks get to close to, edges , so daughter always takes pics near them , and these are mild, couldn’t find the others . Youngest just went to Costa Rico, repelling ,surfing and other adventures . I look at pics ( I’m NYS certified intermediate level rope rescue ) ,hum a single line repell, no belay line , over sized floppy work gloves , minimal instruction, and the other thing she swings out over water , then they drop you, This is where she got the rope burns, she didn’t keep elbows back . But looking at set up, it seems there’s a remote release they pull that lets that single loop then go through the figure 8 , dropping you, that doesn’t seem safe either , what if it gets triggered by accident before in proper position? She went surfing and wiped out, the board caught a wave and pulled hard on the tether, and she said popped her knee out, she said she popped it back in and she’s fine .....

  31. Off topic , but egg related. Buddy lives on Irondequoit Bay, a duck laid an egg in his boat , he couldn’t put it on shore, because of all the muskrats , Fox , and coyotes around . Put it under a heat lamp in a box, then she laid 2 more in his boat, so now he has three under the light , and rotates the eggs every 4 hours .....

  32. Fished yesterday with nephew. Went north of Ithaca to fish Fall creek water was muddy and high. Hit a fly shop and bought him a new fly rod for graduation. Broke it in a a stream closer to home . He got a nice brown and I got 3. Water is still pretty cold for this time of year . 3 PM still some hendricksons coming off. Fish weren't looking up . All fish caught on streamers. Boy is getting better but dear old uncle is still out fishing the kid . Patience technique and reading water beats running up and down the stream.

  39. I have had a pair of robins trying to build a nest on top of a light within inches of the door we use as our main entrance... No deal, because I don't want the bird droppings on my doorstep....They worked a couple of days last week and I tore it down as soon as they started to build it..I thought they had given up, but this morning when The Mermaid and I got back from breakfast, they had a pretty good start again... I tore it down..About a half hour later, I opened the door to see if they were still trying, and had a robin about six inches from my nose.. The trauma to the poor bird may have clinched it....No more nest building attempts since then..
