He came sneaking out at about 4:15, I was seriously thinking about quitting a few minutes early as I am leaving for a work trip tomorrow. I took one last look around and wo now. The new kid went out on his own today got himself a spike . I am so happy for him . Wish I could of got out there with him but jack daniels had me at noon . So no driving for me . Wtg my new hunter. Ps. He said he couldn't of done it without the knowledge I gave him . So sweet lololol.

I’ve posted before that we’ve got a four year tradition of filling my landowner’s tag on Black Friday with our grandson Jake from Rochester. On Friday we got a little screwed up with the combine cutting the corn that we border. We sat in our money spot overlooking a five acre old hayfield that I keep brush hogged, but didn’t see a deer on that sit. They were cutting again Saturday morning so we didn’t go out and figured we’d go for an afternoon sit over the cut cornfield. They were still cutting in the afternoon, but on the other side of the field so we opted to go back to the same stand we sat in on Friday. About 4:00 pm we had a short snouter come out milling around, followed by another, and then mommy joined them. Kept checking them out through the scope and mommy wasn’t much bigger than her fawns. I told him let’s be patient and wait for others. A few minutes later he spots a bigger deer slinking through the woods following the doe group. Get the scope on it and see small antlers. He comes out sniffing around the doe and she takes off back into the woods with her fawns following. Deer are gone from the field. Damn. 4:25 now and I’m regretting my decision to be patient. Legal time was 4:38, so Jake is watching the clock, and a couple of minutes later we see a small doe come out of the far corner about 200 yds. Watch it through the scope and see mommy in the tree line. She comes out to feed with her fawn and they are facing us, no shot opportunity. Clock is ticking and she will not turn broadside. Head down feeding, occasionally up to look around and back to feeding always facing directly toward us. 4:36 now and Jake calls the two minute warning. Cmon doe, turn, will ya? Finally she quarters slightly, and Jake says is that your shot? Bang - doe drops in place. What time is it Jake? 4:37, no, just clicked to 4:38. Shot clock expires and so did the doe. Forgot to take a field pic, and he was cold so we went back to the house and I went to get it with the tractor. Four years/four does in a row with him now. Can’t wait til he’s old enough to pull the trigger himself!

Not "Live" at all. Vermont rifle season wrapped up yesterday. One of the tougher seasons I have had in awhile. Over 15 days (I didn't hunt on Thanksgiving) I put in around 80 hours and saw 34 deer. The only legal buck I saw was behind the neighbor's posters. Almost no chasing or rut activity. I saw a 75lb spike chasing and cruising, as well as the big buck on the neighbor's. I guess I did see a buck cruising while I was driving. It was a smaller 6 point between some houses. On top of this, I didn't see any buck tracks on the 200+ acre part of the farm that I hunt. I saw plenty of activity the 2 weeks before gun season. I guess it all comes down to how the season fell on the calendar. I never want to start rifle hunting this late again. We had snow for the entire season, which is great. The only drawback was that it was crunchy. I'm not much of a still hunter or tracker, but I give it a go when we have decent conditions. I tried crunching around some, but it wasn't working on the "smaller" areas that I have to hunt. It wasn't all bad. I got to see and hear the woods. It was single digit cold opening day and I saw a pair of great blue herons fly over. Friday it was cold and blowing 20mph and I had a flock of geese fly over. I got to watch the chickadees and the ravens. One day I heard a pack of coyotes at about noon. The highlight was the 3.5 year old 8 point that was across the posters. The second time I saw him he was coming down the power line toward me. He was still 40 yards behind the posters when he put his nose down and turned onto a cross trail, then disappeared into the goldenrod. In theory, I will be muzzleloader hunting in a week. In theory, I could shoot another good buck. Unless the 2nd rut kicks in, or we get some fluffy snow, I imagine it will be more of the same. At least I got to see a nice buck from the stand, and got some nice pics from before the season on my cameras. (My cameras have never been so dead during rifle season.) Time to clean the rifle and prep the smokepole. I plan on doing some stomping around with one of my buddies next week, as long as he can get the time off. Good luck to everyone out there still trying to fill a tag or a freezer. I'm trying to convince myself that it ain't over yet!

Deer and turkey do hang together quite often though. It seems they have an innate understanding they benefit from this symbiotic relationship. The deer can alert the turkey to dangers they cannot smell and the turkey can alert the deer to danger they cannot see. I've seen this many times in the woods during hunting season and neither one seems to mind the other's presence. They actually seem to desire it.

You can get a lot of do overs in ,life . You can get another job if you lose one , you can get remarried, flunk out and go back to school , but every bullet you fire is gone for ever , and you own it .

This is last year's Doe, she was dry aged and I cooked it perfectly. I was worried because I used a garlic basting oil, thought it was going to be to strong.

We got it done this morning before the snow started. The deer were really moving this morning. So far he's sat with me three times this year and we've gone 2 for 3. With this doe and a coyote before that.

People should stop feeding those that post craziness. It’s all an attention grab.

Buy once, cry once ! Do I even need to tell you my opinion ? I will. Lol The Nympho to me is a great platform, I can get in and out of any lake, only need 8" of water below me, and can handle big water (as you witnessed). There are a ton of tin cans out there that will serve you well. I'd say stick to something 17-19', 6' beam minimum, and deep V. Plenty of guys on the big ponds with those rigs. You just need to find something with a medium gunnel height, so you can do bass stuff but still high enough that you feel safe standing in 2'rs. And yes, the electric up front is a tool I couldn't live without ! I love how mine is linked to the graph, and I recommend that as well so your not always carrying a remote. Looking at trading in my rig for something different. Used to do more bass fishing and travelling, nowadays i just fish the home lake Oneida for walleyes. So think i am gonna trade in the boat with decks and get a deep V. Plus i am old now and dont care much for being above the water these days while fishing. I'm looking at this one especially and putting my 40 hp on it. Then upgrade trolling motors to one with autopilot ( @TreeGuy fault! lol ) . Well it was a good hunt but not a great hunt. Saw fresh tracks right where I expected them to be but couldn't get to the piece of land I knew they were in as I ran into another Hunter so I back tracked and hit a few other areas but didn't see anything. Hair at 6 oclock!!

Big buck have been doing this forever. Whenever you see a line of doe, if there's a buck in that line, he will be the last one in the line. Smaller bucks always walk in front of the big one. I've seen very large 8 point bucks followed by even bigger 10 point bucks. Older experienced bucks know this is the way to survive. If they were men, they would be vilified for sending women and children into the mine field ahead of them.

All in all it was a good day, saw 7 doe this morning and 3 bucks this afternoon, one got me close to pulling the trigger but he wasn't what I was looking for, heck I don't need anymore so he's gotta be really nice. My brother saw 3 doe and one buck and my dad saw 1 buck and 1 doe, so pretty happy with those sightings!

This is a question I’ve been asked by many different people under many different contexts. I usually give the standard answer of I love to eat and as someone in the food industry it’s important to know where our food really comes from. Truth be told there was some truth to that when I first started hunting. Now the real reason I hunt, it’s the only place I can go and turn off the outside world. It’s all About me and what I want. I love doing it, love watching the woods wake up, or go to sleep. I love the quiet, the solitude. The ups the Downs. The Disappointments, the thrills. Definitely not nonsence. Its a combination of does that werent bred as well as doe fawns that have reached the proper weight. Im sure many doe fawns will reach that weight this year with the prevalance of acorns this year

One of the reasons I much prefer hunting from stands at height. Not that every shot is ok from a stand but shooting down helps to minimize concerns.

There is no excuse for this "hunter" !! He should be prosecuted, and do hard time! My grandson and I had a monster buck standing on the top of a ridge on Saturday. Only thing we could see behind him was sky. I called off the shot. Easy call. No idea where that bullet would have ended up had my grandson missed, or had a pass through. This non shot, is stressed at every hunter ed course we give! I sincerely hope your neighbor fully recovers. My prayers to him and his family.
