Live From The Woods 2022 - 2023 Edition!

I wouldn't sleep on the first week of october if you have plots or food. Unpressured deer and food early on can be instant success if you can pattern them. Also this year we had a good cold snap early and activity was crazy. Now we're getting that warm weather that we usually get in early to mid-october. I remember 2 years ago I think we had crazy rain and wind, we just can't predict the weather and it does affect hunting.
I'll stick to my belief thought that hunting or hunting moderate to hard from 10/10-10/20ish is not a great idea. I think you're doing more harm than good with scent and pressure.
We didn't even have a decent buck on cam til 10/16 and only at night last year 10/23. And I know everyone was just talking about don't rely on cams but a deer can't step foot in my plots without being on film. Lol

But this property has been the same every year for the 8 years I've hunted it. 1-2 local small bucks then about Halloween it blows up.

I do hunt early for a doe and prob will still do that some but am saving my time for prime time.

And I haven't seen any cold snap here or any increased activity til now. Think a lot depends on the property.

That’s what I did this year Rob. I took off four 1/2 vacation days in Oct, but I’m off for the next 4 weeks. Well, I’m sure I’ll have to pop into a Teams meeting here and there, but I’d feel better keeping up with things anyways.

looking forward to hopefully see you drop one early and not see the grind you went through last year :)

As i drive right by horse farm I turned into their long driveway through a nice gate with video survailence camera signs on either side. Got about half way down driveway and wussed out to ask permission to roam about their 10-12 horses to retrieve. I really wanted to skin and stretch the pelt and send to Moyles minkery to get garment tanned too. But if per chance a deer gets in there I'm definately going to ask.

Jay, I know a guy who would be happy to help you put up the coyote ;-)  …although it might be getting a bit ripe by now…I could also help you clean the skull…I’ll be in skull prep mode soon for someone else…keep me posted!   (Hopefully any deer you stick don’t run that way)

Good luck!!

My cams are popping all day.  Most of the pics are does running by. Probably getting harassed.

I know it's warm, but the bucks are getting ramped up, and I seen several bucks yesterday afternoon and it was mid 60's.

Live from the home office 2022. I was on a conference call at 7:30 when my wife came in and said there was a buck out in the field. I jumped up grabbed the bino's and head out. It was a nice 8-point that followed a path the doe normally use.

I'm glad my camera was off for while I was on the Teams meeting!!

So, while I was eating lunch and staring out the window, I noticed this. That buck must have made it this morning.

My wife finds it amazing that I can spot a rub from 150 yrds away but can't seem to see the crumbs I left on the counter.

No I don’t just trying to narrow down a direction of travel for a particular deer and hoping he shows up at the scrape. I watched a buck earlier in the week walk just out of range of my camera by a couple feet and go the opposite way.

im 90% sure I know where this buck is bedding and it’s on private. one camera has kinda told me that info so just hoping this second one confirms it.  Sign is there of a big buck so I’m guessing it’s from him.

I know. My post wasn't meant to be directed at you. Just an observation as a fellow cell cam guy for others to think about and consider.

do you have cams on runs and off the plot? I have 2 bucks that I've not captured once in a plot but going through the woods and skirting them.

I have 14 cams on 117 acres. 3 on video. Lol. Sneaky SoBs.

I have that many cause I had another spot I hunted that I used cams on but no longer hunt there.

Your good.  It’s always good to have those reminders in my opinion.  Get caught up to much on the camera when it’s only pointed at one small area.

I have 10 cell cams out and I’ve had little to no deer activity on cam over the past couple of weeks. Last night, not 1 deer! The night before that, a doe. At most, over the past 2 weeks, I’ve gotten 2-3 does and 2-3 small bucks on cam each night. Pretty much correlates with what I’ve been seeing it the woods! They cut the corn next to me on 10/10 and the deer have all but vacated the area. I walked through the cornfield, and I bet I didn’t find a handful of corn left on the ground!

I haven’t gotten a pic of a shooter during daylight hours since 9/26. One new shooter has shown up recently, but only in the middle of the night. Last year, my cams were dead until ~11/9. Kind of expecting the same thing this year….

From your lips to Gods ears Belo!!   I'm not blessed with having a good deer population around the property I hunt, so it's always a grind for me! So few that I won't consider shooting a doe. Being selective about the bucks I shoot makes it even harder and more frustrating. I'm certainly envious of guys that see multiple deer on most hunts...

Shot a buck at 7:30 this morning, he came in, worked a scrape then headed past me at 20. I knew the shot was a touch back. Arrow looked and smelled like liver so i gave him seven hours. He went 63 yards, turns out I heard him die. He made some light grunts which Id never heard before as he died4bd7e76d787c184d534dd86e93b8aa4f.jpg

I'm in 3S - yet another property in the management program. I haven't been here since 2018 but have really enjoyed the "new dirt" hunts this season. 68 and balmy- had to cross a trout stream to get where I am. A fly fisherman kindly showed me the shallowest crossing point after missing a strike(netted a few small ones earlier he said). Much more open than I recalled but we shall see what we see. 79787ccbda4f06af5c42fdc9edae3d82.jpg
