Here's something to think about:

High winds, slippery roads because salt isn't working so well, temps below zero. Ok some happy drunk comes down the road, stomps his brakes slides off and hit an electric pole. Or these gusty winds blow a line down. How long can you last before you turn into a popsicle. Oh yeah, you guys that have a wood/coal/pellet stove, etc., or those with emergency generators have nothing to worry about. But the rest of us ........popsicle.

14 outside my window and going to get colder. Please dont forget your pet's even your hunting dogs shouldn't be left outside. To answer Doc's question I think with the clothes/hunting gear I could last until power was restored.I do have a pellet stove but with no power it will not work a wood stove would be the better choice in that situation.

I say it hasn't been this cold in about a year; -7 right now, winds 10 mph, gust to 30; 10 inches of snow on the ground from yesterday, 1- 4 pm..

What's it like in your neck of the woods?

With an almost 2 year old and a pregnant wife at home I took the initiative and installed a generator transfer switch...best couple hundred dollars I have spent for piece of mind I have spent in a while.

Now if it hits the fan and I am not home at least a neighbor can pull the generator out and give it a quick pull start to get the house back up and running.

I probably wouldn't take that car anywhere until the battery is checked out. Would suck to get stranded with your kid in the car. Battery might be weak and the cold just put it over its cold cranking limits.
