If I don’t have any good masks 1) can I use a wet bandanna like in the movies? 2) do I shave now?

Saw a story on the web about masks and beards and what beards are ok with a mask and which beards are not. According to the article, most beards would have to go for a mask to work. What also struck me was the 50 or so styles of beards listed.

That’s correct , each year we had to go through “ Fit testing “ of both our scba masks and N95 masks . A series of movements and talking while wearing each , while hooked up to some contraption  that measures leaks , not Just no  breads but you need the correct size and a proper fit .

The N95 is fairly effective for the virus although isolation and hand washing , a strong immune system are your first line of defense it seems . You’re not going to find many if you don’t have them now, demand has exceeded production by  what 10,000 fold ? for some time , hospitals , FD, EMS are close to running out  or have run out .

I have a few, and have some sources working on more , but every home store, auto parts store, paint store and so on has been out of them for some time now , who knows what’s in their warehouse but thats going to be it for sometime .

I can see NYC on some type of lockdown, if this lunacy continues.  Early on in this thread, I pointed out condolences for those whom are affected by this. Laugh or cry.. take your pick.  Ill take laugh.  Crappyice if you need to borrow a razor..  I think you are still good for some time though.
I am thinking about altering my life slightly for this.  Thinking to fire up my smoker and keep a good sized stash of jerky, snack sticks, etc on hand. I am even thinking this may be an over reaction still but Ill eat it anyway.
Despite wandering around Chinatown last weekend, grabbing food, getting a haircut, grocery shopping.. I am alive and well.  Virus has not struck me down.  Most times I go there I see at least a handful of people wearing masks, normally. This last time I did not see one person wearing a mask. The reverse of what I expected. Im guessing nobody wants to be associated with being ill, so no mask.

I work in nyc and plans are in place for a 2-4 week work from Home potentially for entire company. Lots of confidentiality and security issues with everyone working from home tho especially people who don’t normally have that type of access

If I didn't arlready have in house, Lysol, and Clorox, I would make haist to get some on hand. Both are knowned to kill Coronavirus Covid - 19 and  Sars.  Anti bacterial will not; need Virucidals or anti viral products.

Those two products just might make a good stock option to buy right now, in a declining stock market.

My wife already works from home but their travel has been shut down for over a week (this is a global CQA)...I’ve been following this situation and occasionally this thread for a month.

I don’t like to over react but I’m glad I sold our freed up stock 2 weeks ago and feel like today may be my kids last day of school for a few weeks...that is crazy right?

Good luck getting N95 filters...this is the beginning of a sci-fi right, kills oldies spares the very young...Chlorox bleach will disenfect drinking water I should probably get some for my neglected whites at minimum.

Too be clear, I am not a prepper and other than a freezer full of venison we are not prepared for a long snow storm let alone the apocalypse...

Edit: I think I’m gonna be forced into a mask friendly Zappa beard...it seems like the obvious choice

Our work travel overseas is suspended and any symptoms of a cold/flu means you have to stay home for 14+ days

this kinda stuff is what worries me.   Folks that work from home or in an office is one thing but boots on the ground out for 14 days +  is not good, or whole operations being closed for periods of time.

That and the Dow taking a beating.  Esp if the market closes for a quarantine.

Not so afraid of  personally getting the sickness itself, I worry about the effects of trying to contain it. And then the added risk of this plus flu every year to people that are most vulnerable.  Just have to watch and see how it plays out.   The actual physical acts of trying to contain it may have more effect on the US population than the sickness itself.

I already work from home but travel a bit. I flew to Charlotte and back the week before last and have another trip booked in a few weeks. I am not overly concerned. Not that I want the flu of any kind I think for a normal healthy individual it is the flu and not likely to do much more than the common flu's. If you look at the stats it is mostly old folks and people with other health issues that risk death.

I don't trust the fact that the liberal media is not over-hyping this as much as possible to bury the markets, discredit the Trump administration and make us all Socialists!!

If I die from Coronavirus I will retract this opinion!!

The only thing to fear is fear itself....................FDR......1933.   Still true today.

There are many out there using fear as a political means. Yes, there is a virus out there that will make you sick. But so does the common cold, and flu.

Coronavirus is not the Black Plague!!!

Most masks are not going to do you any good . I was told . The masks are more for not letting germs out .

Surgical masks which most wear in these situations yes that’s true . N95 masks are fairly effective though , the supply and production has long since not been able to keep up with demand , there also one use masks , and have to be handled correctly while removing and disposal . Basically there are none in the supply chain now . I have some and a package of some more in route .

  1. What is an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR)?
    1. An N95 FFR is a type of respirator which removes particles from the air that are breathed through it. These respirators filter out at least 95% of very small (0.3 micron) particles. N95 FFRs are capable of filtering out all types of particles, including bacteria and viruses.
  2. What makes N95 respirators different from facemasks (sometimes called a surgical mask)?
    1. Infographic: Understanding the difference between surgical masks and N95 respiratorspdf icon
    2. N95 respirators reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. N95 respirators are tight-fitting respirators that filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.

Every study I have read states that wearing one to prevent the flu is pretty ineffective. Especially considering most don't wear or fit them correctly. And what do you do more when you wear one? Constantly touch your hands to your face around your nose, mouth and eyes. Keeping your hands washed after touching possible areas that could be contaminated, like an airport escalator railing, an airplane seat tray an office elevator button....., and also NOT touching your mouth, nose, eyes....is your best actions. The masks are recommended fitted and worn by carriers to help stop the spread of germs.

Is the study on N95 respirators  or surgical masks ( what most wear )  ?  I highly doubt it was on N95 as we were issued N95 s and fit tested annually , used them on EMS calls to protect us while treating certain PT.s , with TB , flu and so on .

N95  Masks do  filter out bacteria and viruses , surgical ones that you see everyone wearing on the news no .

I agree as I’ve stated prior in this thread ,isolation, strong immune system ,and hand washing are your best line of defense.

I have a supply of N95 as I wear them sanding, spray painting and so on . Now I’m glad to have them , just in case .

I wish I had been ahead of the curve and bought 100k worth of them , could have made 10x my money !

Living in NYC, I typically get every cold and flu that goes around. This year I decided to change one thing. I started washing my hands religiously in Nov. Maybe 10-15 times a day for the full 20 seconds with hot soapy water. Last night, for example I was at an event and shook hands with 10 people then went for dinner. I washed my hands five times over those three hours - even breaking in the middle of dinner to wash up. I also surf the subway and don't handle any part of the car when I commute.

I haven't been sick once this year - *knock wood*.

That said, the car is provisioned and pointed toward Canada if things gets mildly out of hand in NYC.

I do the same thing. Never had a sick day in my professional career. Over 11 years working in nyc. My hands are so dry in the winter and I have to use hand cream but who cares when it works

Kids going to school always brings home stuff.  But my brother works for Homeland Security at JFK and he bought something with him for Chinese New Years because after that weekend, he was sick, my dad was sick, my wife, both my nieces, and both my kids.  They all recovered.  Heck, both of my boss' kids were also sick and his wife too so I was also attacked while at work.  Yet. me and my dry cracked hands was able to stay clear.
