  1. you sound like a man who's no stranger to spotlighting and baiting deer..........not sure who you offend more, upstate or downstate people.......

  2. The baiting issue aside, that is some of the most pompous, uninformed bullsh*t I've ever read on this site. And that's saying a lot. I'm from the city, I know many, many, hunters from the city. Everyone I know eats the deer they kill, with one exception, who donates his venison to a food bank. My either-sex archery tag almost always goes on a doe, because putting meat in my freezer is what matters most to me, so the first good size deer that passes my stand gets the arrow. Saying people from downstate are only in it for the horns (yeah, giant NY racks, hah!), is just ignorant. But if you want to play the generalization game, I'm sure I could come up with some blanket upstate hick comments to post here.

  4. I have been meaning to put up a couple recipes and haven't gotten to it. Next week I will put this one up. (WNY can add his spicier version) I will also post the Italian sausage, peperoni and my favorite- summer sausage. Coming into the season I would love to see the recipe section get active again. beats talking about ISIS or baiting...lol Side note----I want to find a real good venison hot dog recipe and one for polish sausage.

  9. yeah sorta seemed that way a bit... i think part of the problem is the acclimation process or lack there of in this case. i know i wasnt just thrown into the mix and handed a gun and fell in love with the sport. it came with many many years at a young age shadowing my father just being in the woods in general. whether is be scouting or plain sitting in a blind with my dad during the season but i knew when my time came and i was legal to hunt with him rather then just shadowing him, i was READY. i WANTED to be there and WANTED to hunt. theres things as hunters we can do to help the process if we hope our little ones will one day follow suit. not just give em a gun and say shoot, theres seat time and a learning curve. Now, not all kids will want to hunt but may pick it up down the road as they mature some or become more involved. the road is long, so dont ruin it trying so hard in the beginning forcing them to hunt! it may just put a bad taste in their mouth

  10. Don't see it that way Steve. When I mentored I had a piece of paper on me stating I was the monitor with the kids name. What's the big deal if two other guys join walking out or in even if they do have a bow. It is bow season.

  11. Got to love processing my own game and beef. I just had a couple burgers, seasoned with a special mix of mine. BEST OF ALL..... it was basically ground up short rib, main rib meat, rib-eye, and top sirloin steak. only did it because all the help was leaving me and they got enough to take with them. I'd post pictures but they're gone. anyone else here do their own?

  13. i think all it shows is that some hunting families push their children into doing this before they're mentally ready to do such. some families cant remember that making that first kill is a big hump that takes some time to do for some kids. i would rather not have this video out there for the antihunters personally

  14. Wow-this forum never ceases to amaze me with big fish in a mud puddle syndrome. I happen to be an upstate country boy and let me set it straight- work feeds more family's that hunting let alone bait pile bozos. Skill gives more bounty than luck. After reading the above post even if you were spot on with citidiot assessment you look like a far bigger fool with regard to you ability, participation and respect for hunting. 16. Mapping Trophy Bucks by Brad Herndon and Bowhunting Forest and Deep Woods by Greg Miller. If you're going to read, those two are musts. But I find you learn more in a day in the woods than a week wife a book. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. I have collected quite a few books over the years. I do not like the "how to" books. I like real hunting story/history type books. I would recommend anything by Peter Hathaway Capstick. Mostly about African hunting, but his books are very entertaining to say the least. Other entertaining authors in various type hunting/gun related works are, Robert Ruark, Theodore Roosevelt, Col. Charles Askins, Elmer Keith, Thomas McIntyre, James A. Swan, Ted Kerasote just to name a few. Some of these writers are from yesteryear, some are modern. Look the names up and anything they wrote is good.

  19. Eberhart's bowhunting series and Brad Herndon's Mapping trophy bucks are must have's in my opinion. You won't agree with all tactics but you take what works within your system and apply it.

  20. I haven't read a hunting-related book in several years Born. They're all packed in a box in storage somewhere. Can't remember any titles or authors off the top of my head either. I'll keep trying to jog my memory for you.

  22. Frankly, I like seeing people talking about the campaign and not taking anything for granted. The worst thing is that everyone will assume that a big rabbit is going to be pulled out of the hat at the last minute. The big enemy now is apathy and believing in the tooth fairy. A little good old fashion panic can be a powerful motivator towards getting voters minds right and pushing their feet toward the polls.

  23. I sent a PM with a link for volunteers for Astorino's campaign to the OP... It all happens from grass-roots efforts. All people running for office have a volunteer team. If you are interested in someone's success or concerned about it, join the volunteer campaign team.... Here is the link: http://www.robastorino.com/volunteer NYDH can also use volunteers that are knowledgeable and communicate well.... Even if all someone does is hit the tweet button.....

  27. I have and only use my 1990 PSE. I do get teased about the speed, but I get a few deer ever year with it. I reply that when the deer jumps the string. My arrow hits them when they come back up.

  28. There is already a Safe Act II written and just waiting for the right moment to be introduced and passed. All gun owners need to get out and vote, everyone that keeps saying the Safe Act does not effect me, just wait it will and it will be too late. We need to start voting out all the politicians that voted this crappy law and vote them out. When the back ground check goes in to effect, that state will keep a record of every type of ammo you buy. I am sure there is a reason for this in the near future.

  29. Yeah you got me there, I didn't read them all, I should have. Since you've never hunted over one, I guess you'll have to take my word for it, you don't just show up and shoot. I've hunted over them several times and come away without seeing one deer. It's not the way a lot of folks make it sound. The food plots and feeders simply bring deer to the area more often. They don't always show up. And they definitely don't always show up at the same time everyday, at least not where I was hunting.

  34. This pic is of my nephew killing his first gobbler during the youth hunt in 2012. This was his first buck on opening day of 2012. Here's his 2013 spring bird. Here's another with his 2014 longbeard.

  36. i have done logging roads and log landings. clover/turnips they are effective if you can get enought light to them.. cuttin limbs and trees on southern edge to allow maximum light is big help. roads are usually devoid of topsoil , i was fortunate enough to have piles of it along the road and i put 2 in back in areas i wanted to plant.

  42. I called my brother, tell him I seen 3 bear. He says, I'm not working Thursday, mind if I hunt your spot?...it's state land, so i can't say no ( I wouldn't have). he sees same sow but it actually had 3 cubs. watches them for 30 minutes, until 300 pound boar comes in and scares the 3 cubs and mother away. 444 comes to life and bear hits the ground. it was a 3/4 mile in but near a good trail, he throws it in a wheel barrol and has it out of the woods and hanging in 2hrs. brothers suck!...he left my stand in the woods, so tomorrow I get to drive 1 hr to retrieve stand and look over a place that will have to wait until next year Oh well, there a 400lb bear on a mountain in Dutchess. big yellow tag (#32) in his ear....#32 watch out, i'm coming for you!!!
