  2. as long as regular cigarettes are legal and continue to create health problems, I really don't care if marijuana is legalized and has the same effects on those who use it............I'm sure there is no shortage of people who suck down a 12 pack of beer, or a quart of booze everyday along with their daily double digit cigarette habit and create as much, if not more, of a public safety and health risk as a person who smokes pot.

  3. Finding both sides is a first for me. There is still a lot of snow on the ground but I was searching an over grown brushy field that was mostly bare, when I saw an antler hanging off a shrub. Pretty obvious like waving a flag "here I am !". As I got to the shed I saw the other side laying there on the ground right next to it. I also found a spike shed in the same area. A lucky day.

  4. My twin boys turned 14 this past summer. Took them deer hunting for the first time on the Youth Weekend. Both got their first deer (a doe and a spike buck). I'm hoping I've hooked them for life.

  5. One simply doesn't smoke 20 (or more) joints in a day inhaling repeatedly as with a cigarette. This is just like gun laws written by people that have little understanding of the subject. You are comparing 2 different activities that have far different usage habits.

  6. I doubt that we will see a moose season in NY within the next 5-10 years unless they have a virtual population explosion. Even then, there will be MANY applicants for few tags. Drawing a tag will be like hitting the lottery, similar to Pa's elk drawing, where tens of thousands of applicants compete for perhaps 50 tags. Maine has 1000s of moose, but there are still many residents up there who have applied for 30 years and never drawn a tag. I wouldn't get real optimistic about the odds of drawing a NY moose tag anytime soon. Like in THIS lifetime...<<grin>>...

  7. Ordered up a Knight and Hale "Witchy Woman" from cabelas which arrived today... Out of the box it didn't sound good but with a little chalk and some practice she sounds pretty darn good and I'm pleasantly surprised with the sound... Although I find it a little difficult to cluck and purr together, gotta keep working on that! All things considered it's a great addition. Ok one funny side note... My girlfriend sees me in the shed (man cave) opening the cabelas box which also contained a jake decoy... So she comes in and says in her best Staten Island accent , "oh great! Just what we needed, another rubber chicken and duck call" I just shrugged my shoulders and laughed.... Sorry had to share

  9. 25 plus years gun instructor 10 plus years archery instructor. I could not begin to count the number of people I have certified and sent out into the world. Plus there have been some who I have taken out after the class and got them started. I do at least three classes of each every year and they seem to fill up pretty regularly.

Get me that 100+ acres on the lake up north for May1 though Christmas(end of hunting season). Then get a small condo or place in the Keys for Jan., Feb., Mar. and Apr. Ah to dream

  12. I'm of the mind that hunter retention is just as important as recruitment. Taking a friend who hasn't gotten out in years past (wife, kids, job, house etc.) and reacquainting him with the pursuit counts I would think. He/she may have previously been a hunter but for all practical purposes wasn't for whatever reason. Or a stranger for that matter. Basically you guys are all strangers to me, but I wouldn't think twice about offering company on a bird hunt nor accepting same offer. I also take recruitment to mean persuading non hunters that what we do is not simply murder. When I run into hikers, joggers, dog walkers and the like I make an effort to be friendly. I keep my action visibly open (broken as it were) and wave. I've recommended wearing some blaze orange or other bright color and steered some away from areas I know are full of traps that could harm their dogs. I've gotten the hairy eyeball a few times, most often from other hunters, but when an interaction seems to end well its a plus for all hunters. We're not the beer swilling bubbas we are sometimes portrayed as, nor are we bloodthirsty murderers taking aim and anything that moves. Proving that point to anyone who will listen, for however long, goes just as far as taking a buddy out on his first hunt in my mind.

  16. Many people confuse failure to place a bullet properly with bullet failure. That is where the mixed reviews for Ballist Tip bullets originates IMO.Unless Mv exceeds 3100fos, there is no need for a heavily constructed bullet on deer sized game. From a 22" barrel, factory 140gr 7mm-08 loads are about 2800fps as measured over my chronograph. "Warm" hand loads W/high energy powders will hit 2900fos W/O excessive pressures. Any deer hit in the heart/lung area, including the shoulder, W/a .284 140gr BT @ similar Mv will die very quickly. Here is a young man's 1st buck taken W/my 7mm-08 140gr BT hand loads out of my M700 Mountain Rifle DBM. Note the exit wound. The deer went only a very short distance W/a copious blood trail that was easy to follow.

  18. I finally got a chance to load up some 140gr Nosler Ballistuc Tips in the 7mm-08. As usual they didn't disappoint. I shot 2 separate 3-shot groups that were under 1" @ 100yds. One of the groups was under 3/4" C-C. Both groups combined covered less than 1 1/2".

  20. I talk to people I know about hunting. I'm willing to take any of them but none of them so far has come forth and asked me nor am I going to push anything on them. I only openly talk about my experiences and the reasons why I hunt. I even cook some of the meat and let them try it. As far as strangers go, Since I've started hunting 5 years ago I have personally taken 4 strangers out hunting so far. Of those, it looks like only 2 of them still hunt and I keep in contact with them here and there. If every single one of us get 2 people to hunt our numbers would triple.

  21. The Drunk post was not fair. There are many factors that what he saw was correct/What was seen could be a doe/does fighting also could be that where this was the habitat is very good=antler retention.

  22. This demented ideology is pervasive throughout many American Universities today. The Progressives have completely infested the institutions of higher learning and are forcing that ideology on students, who then take it out into the world. They also expect there to be penalties applied to opponents of that ideology, just as there were penalties against them at the universities.

  23. With the deep snow it took well over an hour to do what would normally take less than 15 minutes . Almost had to pull my knees up to my chin to get through the snow . Batteries were still good even though the camera was put out in late December . Not much activity but had a Yote on the cam . Pictures are from an inexpensive WildGame camera . The only thing I don't like about it is they only take single pictures !

  26. your story made me think of this commercial..........

  27. Your right, there is a conflict of hunter goals. You have the DEC saying the hell with big racked bucks, we want you all to become doe hunters. And then you have TV, magazines and every other hunting media saying that if you can't shoot a big-racked buck, you're nothing as a hunter. Mixed messages coming from everywhere. And now you even have the DEC signing on (begrudgingly) to expanded AR. Yeah people can argue all they want that AR has nothing to do with trophyism, but hunters automatically make that connection, right or wrong. So AR has become code for trophy hunting promotion. Again, right or wrong that is the way it is received, and once again, perception becomes reality to the majority of hunters. How do you straighten it all out and get people to sign onto the notion of doe reduction? ..... I don't know ...... really. If it was easy, it would have already been done. But I would think the first step would be for the DEC to come up with a steadfast, consistent mindset themselves.

  28. The last Hume hunt I did cost me about 5K, about 5 years ago.. They have gone up, as has everything else. There was a time when caribou hunts were a bargain..No more.. Too bad...They are fun to hunt, make a gorgeous mount and are my favorite wild game meat...

  29. I have a nephew who would like to get into hunting so he can go with me. All I can do is remind him about hunting course
    1 point
  30. This year it's my two grandsons, who are 11 and 13 who have been going out with me for a few years now. A nephew asked me a few weeks ago if I could get him started hunting. We are now looking for a hunters safety course for him. He just bought his first truck, and will be spending a lot of time with me this spring and summer. Hoping to see him with his first deer this fall. I hunted with his father, my B.I.L., many years ago, great guy but not so great woodsman or hunter. He hasn't hunted in over 20 years. There is a young family man I met through work, that got his start bow hunting last year with me. We had a couple of close encounters, but no deer yet for him. His time was very limited, working two jobs and a family. But this year I hope to see him be successful in taking his first bow buck. After putting 40 plus hunting seasons behind me, anything I can do to see a young hunter, with that gleem in their eyes, shaking hands, and huge smile on their face, standing over a deer. I will gladly do. Hunting is not just all about me anymore.

  35. If you compare it to the semi's it isn't that far off on price point. Look at the 7400, browning or others. . $750-$1,100. Plus the ability to accessorize and switch calibers is a plus that other autos in that range don't offer.
    1 point
  36. You are comparing a bolt action to a semi auto. ARs are "meant for hunting" as much as any other rifle.
