Hey guys, things have been a little crappy for me lately so I haven't been around much. Taking a bit of a break this weekend and I'll try to get some pics loaded from my bow season so far. I did score on a nice buck the other night so I'll try to load those up sometime tonight when I get situated. Thanks for all your concern. I got some catching up to do here!5 points

a good piece of advice is to attach a small sharp knife to your harness......for years I kept mine in my pack until I realized I could never get to it if I fell and needed to cut myself free of the harness.5 points

3.5+ for sure. Pretty near impossible to age one from that pic. Color of the fur doesnt matter really. Oh wait, he doesnt have a roman nose, cant be a mature deer. Or so Ive been told thats what the states top biologists go by....3 points

I hunt opening day Reg season on a maple syrup farm ( regular field crops too ). I joke with the other guys about squirting Mrs Butterworth's on my clothes as an attractant !2 points
-
I'm not big on scent killers, but I will use cover scents. Typically, I'll put my hunting clothes in a Rubbermaid contained with cut pine boughs and dirt. Then let it soak in for a few weeks and hunt. The deer I shot last year was shot from the ground 12 feet away so I couldn't have stunk like human too bad.2 points
-
Thats not a new article, it pops up every year. Deer arent trying to track you down like the dog is, so its not exactly apples to apples. My theory on it is that you cant get rid of your scent completely, but you can cut down its intensity, which most likely makes it seem as though your scent is older than it really is, making the deer less freaked out by it. You still have to play the wind, but if a deer thinks you are further away because theres not as strong of a scent, then the chance of them getting and staying closer to you when they are downwind is that much better.2 points

I'll admit to rolling my eyes at a few of wol 123 's posts. But he has never pushed anything on anybody here, that I've seen. Except crossbow inclusion and I support that too! He seems to be a hard working family man that likes hunting and fishing. No problem with that! Every man should have the right to believe what he wants to believe. And as long as he's not causing harm or pushing it to others, no big deal. I believe a cheap shot was taken on wol123 and the bible. JMO.2 points

that's Cameron Hanes. he's an except to the rule. he practices everyday out to 160 or so yards. he shoots over 80 lbs of draw weight with very heavy arrows. he still usually takes animals much closer. he's not sponsored by Hoyt, SpotHogg, and Underarmour's "poster boy" just for the heck of it. crazy in shape for a relatively older guy.2 points
-
so, did you decide on whether or not you should go with lighter arrows?2 points

To be honest I, I don't really care long as my arrow hits where I aim.2 points

I describe my version of still hunting as "mobile standing". I generally move quickly to get to preferred areas, and then on come the brakes. Putting the wind in my favor, the real hunting starts. I find a tree or something to break my outline, and just stand there looking at every stump, log, hump in the ground, and any place where a deer could be bedded or feeding. A lot of this scanning is done with binoculars. After about 10 or 15 minutes of studying everything in front of me and off to the sides, I will move super slow about 30 or 40 yards and start the scanning thing all over again, looking for a tail, antler tip, ear, or if I am lucky I might even spot that horizontal line through the trees of a deer's back. Another 10 or 15 minutes and it's time to move again. It takes forever to cover any distance, but the technique is only used in places I am pretty confident hold deer, and distance is not the object. I have watched bucks do a version of this, and it works pretty good for them. Many times they do a whole lot more looking than walking, and that is where I developed my technique. I don't do a whole lot of still-hunting in bow season, but when gun seasons comes, I'll stay on stand when hunters are active (opening day, thanksgiving, and some parts of weekend days), but later when hunters start getting scarce, still hunting is all I do.2 points

It must be frustrating trying to fix other people's mistakes, from almost all your searches people have jumped the deer without giving them adequate time. That being said it sounds like you and Luna are doing a great job I wish you were closer to my area if I ever needed it.2 points

October 15, 2015 (track #2) When I got home from the track earlier today, my wife told me somebody had knocked on the door looking for Luna and I. He shot a doe last night on the public land across the road from our house. He said it looked like a high, one lung hit to him. He had to work last night so he climbed down and looked for the deer after only a few minutes. Inevitably, he jumped it and pushed it. He continued on the track for a short while, then backed out. He went in again about noon today with two more people to search some more. He was able to advance the track only a short distance, then they began a grid search. I had him take us to the hit site, but he wasn't exactly sure where it was. There had been 3 other deer with the one he shot, and I believe Luna began tracking one of the others because she went in the opposite direction the shot doe had. The hunter had seen exactly where she exited the field, so we went there. Luna immediately got on the track, which had sparse bubbly blood. She went exactly the same way the hunter had tracked blood earlier, then went beyond where he had last seen blood. A couple hundred yards later we found a drop in a couple places. Luna continued on, pulling hard. We went through an open field and she appeared to lose the track several times, but worked and found it again. Right before entering a wood lot, we found another drop of blood. After about 400 yards in the woods, Luna appeared to lose the track so we went back to last blood and restarted. She took a different trail that time but again she seemed to lose the track. We had gone close to a mile, with no blood for a long distance. It appeared to me the hunter was probably right about a high one lung hit, and the deer very well may survive. I called off the search.2 points

I would argue with anybody that a good climber is the safest way to get in a tree, provided you're attached the entire time and know what you're doing2 points

October 14, 2015 I received a call at 6:00 tonight from a hunter only 10 miles away. He made what he thought was a high shoulder hit on a deer at 5:00 and watched it run into a tall goldenrod field. He made three passes through the field but couldn't find any blood. I got there at 6:30 and he told me as he was walking back to his truck to wait for me, he had seen fresh tracks made by a running deer in a sandy area. He followed them, saw some blood and backed out. We went to the hit site and Luna took us to the sandy area but didn't locate the blood, which the hunter had marked with blue tape. I took Luna over there and she got back on the track. I believe it was muscle blood as it was bright red, with no bubbles. There was no heavy blood and no bed was found during the track. Luna took us about 200 yards with blood, then we never saw any more. She was pulling very hard and acting completely confident for at least an hour as we followed many different trails. At one point, coyotes were howling not more than 50 or 60 yards from us. Understandably, Luna got very nervous and quit tracking until they left. I believe there's a chance they were on the deer we were tracking. 2.5 hours after starting the track, and based on the details above, I called off the search. I believe this was a non lethal hit made with a Rage broad head. I'm happy with how Luna performed on our first night track.2 points

I am a self proclaimed godless heathen... Although wolc 123 refers to his faith often, I have not seen him "pushing" it on anybody else.. As long as he doesn't preach to me ( and I have not witnessed him preaching to anybody) he's OK with me.... I think it's rude to deride a person because of his religious convictions UNLESS he is deriding other people because of thiers, or their lack thereof... wolc 123 has not done this to my knowledge...2 points

That's way over the line man. WOLC123 might not be your buddy (or mine), but there's no need for that. You're treading on a lot of people, posting stuff like that.2 points

I'm paying $2,700.00 per year for house, barn and 210 acres in Delaware County. Have the land in the forestry program. I think this is very reasonable. The timber harvest rotation is every 12 - 14 years, this pays for all expenses and puts many dollars in my pocket too. This year's harvest is paying for a dall sheep hunt next year. Spark should look at all the land-tax options, ie Agriculture and Forestry. As for fencing, most properties around me are bordered with beautiful stone walls. Much nicer to look at than wire. There is good deer & turkey hunting but you will not find a 170" buck in Delaware County.1 point
