Although I held the door for little old ladies (music reference) at Tim Horton's this morning, I did another deed of greater importance later in the morning. I took a ride down to Canadice to retrieve trail cameras and hunt for sheds. I travel Middle Road all the time year round and pick up lots of trash when I have the time. There has been a TV in the ditch that I have been eye balling for 6 months. Some SOB tossed it late last summer IIRC and nobody else picked it up. Granted, it was rolled probably 25-30 feet down the bank and heavy as all get out. Today was the day that I had the time, gloves and right boots on my feet to get r done. Now the Town Of Amherst will get it........they have a drop off at the highway dept. I'll swing by some day this week and pitch it. In the mean time, if anybody wants it, holler. Did I mention it WAS heavy?10 points

I've had quite a "trail cam" season since last fall. I got my first real bear video, multiple (including another today) bobcat videos and today...............my first fisher video. I took a screen shot with my phone for upload here since uploading video is painful with my DSL. If I get time later, maybe I'll load the video. Here's what you get now..........8 points

Great to see some fisher enthusiasm. Here are a couple of shots of 2 different animals from the bone yard. The distance from the camera may exaggerate the size different but one seems almost obese while the other is slender. This is northern Otsego County. I added one more photo from the same spot that is not a fisher.8 points

Obama goes to Cuba on a diplomatic trip and takes the wife, kids, and Mother-in-law. What exactly is that doing for the country? Nothing like taking your family traveling all over the world at tax payers expense.6 points

Closing today. My Dad did a final walk of the land yesterday and ran into the neighbor who doesn't hunt, but isn't against it. He told my Dad there is a resident bear, my Dad figured the guy was full of it. But then the guy pulled out pictures of it in the backyard. Would be cool to get a bear in Putnam County, I would guess only a few have ever been taken in Putnam. He also showed my Dad some pics of coyotes, a bobcat, and some small bucks.6 points

My seven yr old and I have logged some miles. We started back in Jan at our local non hunting park. We had transisioned from the brushy field into the hardwoods. We always spread out while walking and im always way ahead as he is easally distrcted. Anyways im way ahead and i hear him yell dad i found a deer, keeps repeating it as im walikng back. I walk up to him not seeing anything and say where, he points right infront of me, wow sweet find! Not sure what happened to him but my son was super exited, the next morning he said he dreamed about it. Last sunday morning he said he wanted to shed hunt behind great great grams house. We took a quick walk and he's dying to find a shed on his own. So I'm walking thru some brush and I see one, I call him over telling him this looks like a good spot ( I want him to find it) I sent him past it like for time, each walking right by it, finally I say stop and look around, he didn't find it first but non the less happy. This am he wanted my wife to tag along at the park. She has never really even looked before but she found one. Not long after I heard my son make a excited noise and see him bend over and pick up his first on his own horn, a shinny 2pt and boy was he excited. I had a goose egg. I cant get this to post pic between each story so they are in order of story, except the first two are reversed.6 points

They are a favorite of mine, any animal that does in Porcupines and eats them is a friend of myself and my dogs. I wish there were a lot more of them around. Al5 points

I had this one come for a visit last fall and was lucky enough to snap a few pics, I have seen a few now and always enjoy seeing them. This one couldn't figure me out and circled the base of the tree as I squeaked at it.4 points

Like I mentioned above, the Town Of Amherst will take them at their Highway Dept. They'll also take propane tanks, computers, monitors and concrete. The taxes are high enough here that they have to take them!3 points

OK. Well, this is posted in the "New York Hunting Regions 'Region 2' ". So, perhaps I am wrong, but that section of this site is about "Hunting" in region 2. Not about politics in Region 2. I guess time will tell if the new candidates are for hunting or against it. At this point in time, it's about loosing 2 politicians, not about hunting.3 points

Although it was a bit foggy that day, I thought this was an interesting picture I caught on my trail cam.2 points

I too think it's a great idea. I would like to see this happen in the Rochester area. I've been "Burb" (suburban) hunting two years and have my own set of rules I adhere to. My arrangement with the land owners is an attempt to reduce population because of deer damage and deer/vehicle accidents. So "Doe only" I'm in small open 1 acre back yards of $400 and $600 thousand dollar homes. So "Bow or Crossbow only" and establish permission from all neighbors. Other non-field hunting rules apply as well. Like: Exhaust all efforts to recover broadheads. No one wants a hidden razor blade in their backyard. There are also many "Don't shoot" situations: Don't shoot if an unleashed dog is near. Try not to let children or non hunters experience a harvest that could be unsightly. And more. I also share harvest with landowners.2 points

The common theme of the answers I have received seem to be to definitely follow the path I originally noted and get an actual compound bow. That was the main answer I was seeking an opinion on. I wasn't sure if it was worth starting with the less expensive "long bow" style beginner series or just hop right into a modern bow. Advantage / disadvantage of either direction. My gut was leaning towards what you all confirmed. Thank you! Now for some more research.....2 points

Al, as a veteran of MANY quill pulling sessions, I would heartily agree with that.. Mostly it involved coon hounds, but we had an Airedale who was a family pet and she always had to try to KILL the damn things..2 points

The way this year has been going, I wasn't sure I'd find a 3'rd antler on the season. Today I introduced 3 new faces to the bone pile! Nothing to write home about, but the 2 for 1 freshie set sure was a welcome sight to see! ...and another oldie trampled into the earth.2 points

No, I don't think he did. It didn't take long for this thread to be about doves and lead in gut-piles leading to eagles being killed from lead. Looks like a cooperative attempt to get what you want. Some of us made very factual points to the first post, and then mike got twisted and wanted to either delete the thread or start a new one because he didn't like how this was going. It wasn't going his way. He even posted how dove hunters are not really on his side.2 points

Yesterday afternoon, I read an article that discussed a partnership between bow hunters and the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The cities were looking at ways to reduce the deer herd in their metro area. The reasons for the desired reductions are familiar: damage to vehicles, damage to horticulture on both residential and public grounds, and general nuisances associated with unchecked, large, and some might say bold, deer populations in urban and suburban areas. Enter the Metro Bowhunters Resource Base (MBRB), ta-da! The MBRB organizes and administers bow hunts in in the Twin City metro area in locations that are, well, sensitive to hunting, and in use by the general public. From the MBRB about page: The MBRB also administers its own skill-based proficiency test that plays a part in the type of hunt an applicant may engage in: standard and sharpshooter. I imagine that proficiency determines the area an individual hunter would be allowed to apply to hunt. From the article that I read, the MBRB also acts as a resource to place deer-disgruntled landowners in contact with available bow hunters. I'm unsure of how that selection is handled. Perhaps a lottery of their "sharpshooter" applicants. Has anyone attempted to organize bow hunters in their "metro" area in a fashion similar to the MBRB in MN? That is, have you or any bow hunting groups or organizations that you are part of, or know of approached a municipality to present and propose a structured, organized metro bow hunt within municipal/county/metro boundaries, specifically at parks, golf courses, etc.? If so, would you share the response you received from the municipality? Would you also share the proposal? I'm very interested in fleshing out this idea and perhaps making a pitch in the Albany / Troy / Schenectady areas. This is a low-cost (perhaps revenue generating), low-impact alternative to sharp-shooters, trapping, birth control, etc, and I think that an organized front with a structured and detailed plan delivered by experienced and conscientious bow hunters would be the best approach, oppositions notwithstanding. Thoughts? Experiences? Suggestions? Your thoughtful and constructive contributions are appreciated. Thanks very much... -- Link to the MBRB about page: http://mbrb.org/mbrb/mbrb-p04.htm Link to the MBRB page on how to engage the MBRB: http://mbrb.org/mbrb/mbrb-p10.htm1 point

Not surprisingly, I spoke to soon...........I stopped at the Town Of Amherst today and the guy said "no dice". I said WTH man? Turns out they stopped the darn program a month ago. The Man said that they will pick it up in front of my house on my garbage day, March 30th. Put it to the curb and they'll snag it. He said that they had too many people bringing them from all over the county and they couldn't handle them all; they were overwhelmed!! Soooo, now my wife is just thrilled that we have to look at the heap-o-garbage on the side of the house for a week until NEXT Wednesday. One other thing the guy said was that he was told Best Buy would take it but they charged $15 I have no regrets, I'd do it again if'n I spot one in the ditch and the stars are lined up.1 point

My daughter started with a longbow at 6yrs old and still shoots it at 7, but I did also get a kids compound. She shoots both now. You can get away with poor technique and shoot a compound pretty darn good. Much tougher to do with a trad bow. Thus, I am hoping she will become proficient with the longbow and then she can use whatever she wants. At age 7, she knows what the term "expansion" means in terms of releasing a trad bow. I suspect many compound only guys would not be familiar with the term even though back tension is still a proper component of compound shooting. I can tell you that I have learned more about shooting a bow well in my trad pursuits than I did when I only shot compound.1 point

Diamond Infinite Edge. 13"-30" draw length and something like 8- 70 lbs. draw weight. He won't out grow it anytime soon. Right around $400.1 point

you want a bow that is adjustable and easy to repeat form. not concerned about speed/performance or being too light of a draw weight. bows with an adjustable rotating module for draw length are great. otherwise you're buying modules often and then a new bow when the cam is at its max draw length. also a really nice hard back wall is great. helps them with muscle memory to repeat anchor points and keep good form. another thing release aids are often too long. spend extra to get one with a buckle for consistency and nylon web strap to the release head that can be shortened way up and let out as they grow. big targets and focus on hitting it to build their confidence. as they get older and have shot a little they might be inclined to develop bad habits. once this happens start giving them less arrows even down to one. they can shoot that one as many times as they want but it will put emphasis on making each shot count as they won't want to walk back and forth to the target for nothing. all this work well for us adults too.1 point

Funny / ironic story. I would think that my fellow shed hunters would agree that finding a matched set is considerably harder than finding just a single side! So, my brother-in-law was in town for the weekend and we decided to do a little shed hunting (30 miles worth). I spot what appears to be a small piece of an antler. I walk over and investigate and see both sides basically laying on each other. I pick them up and shout over to my brother-in-law of my find. As he is walking towards me, and literally 10' from where I find mine, he stops and picks up another matched set....again, basically almost laying on each other. Granted, small deer, but 2 matched sets within 10' of each other. Crazy!1 point
