Was finally able to get out this past weekend and managed to get a gobbler on some Orange County public land. He gobbled on the roost at 5:34 and I took my shot at 5:41. Not sure if I’ll be able to get out again this season. Side note to everyone to triple check yourself for ticks. I found one buried in me this morning in a very private place. Sending it out to get tested.22 points

I'm not hunting today but I just took a look in the field behind my shop and heard a couple gobbles. Wish I didn't have to go to work. Called back and forth with him for a minute but I had to run. He was pretty fired up though. Good luck everyone! Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk3 points

Finally the fence is enclosed! Still another day of work but deer shouldn't be able to enter now. About 40 peppers, eggplant and okra in the ground, another 40 to go. Spinich is coming in great right in front of the garlic. Carrots the same, I'm still not having any luck with parsnips. Celery, brussel sprouts and tomatoes will go in tomorrow. All potato plants are blooming and look good.2 points

I never did either, now I wear my bino harness anytime I’m going to the woods. A good set of binos has changed the way I hunt, I also very rarely hunt fields. Binos during Turkey season make it very easy to pick out a gobbler on a limb in early dawn light. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I've said this before in another thread: Many of the most popular crossbows on the market are off-limits to NY hunters who want to comply with the draw weight and limb tip width restrictions. There seem to be fewer and fewer premium crossbow offerings that fit within the NY standards. Many crossbows that use older technology (e.g. most Excalibur crossbows with their recurve limbs and heavy draw weights) also aren't legal in NY. I'm not a crossbow hunter so I don't really have a dog in the fight. But like the 7 (or is it 10?) round capacity rules for firearms, the current restrictions seem quite arbitrary and limiting for no real good reason (or at least none that I've ever been made aware of).2 points

The series is here. I was going to share it if I had success lol. Right now It's just a guy doing his best with no idea if his plot will grow. The playlist is in the top right corner of the video, there are 12 videos so far.2 points

The risk with doing that is overgrowth. If I am going to set cams on or around buck beds it will be done in the thick of summer heat and growth. At that point you know where and how to set or even trim to avoid grass and weeds. I don't often do the beds but rather trails leading to and from that bedding area in general. I find that it lends itself to more use and a slightly wider net, with less intrusion. I do occasionally set up on beds but in most instances the intel is less useful and I do it more for the photos and challenge in areas I know come season, the pressure will kill it. This is one of my two down times for cams, the other post shed to pre-season turkey. I usually set volume on or around July 4. Vegetation is thick so you know what you are dealing with and bucks are more easily IDed, etc. All that said, I set a cheap cam on our Missouri ground before we left. I'm hoping it is still there and would love to see the pics off of it. We really only get there to hunt - no summer prep, so that cam will have been out a long time when checked. This year, I'll likely set up a cell cam on external/solar and do it right and be mentally prepared for it to be stolen cost-wise. Last year we were getting our Ohio ground set up and that took alot more time, and still much more to do there. It left me unprepared to set cams efficiently in Missouri for a long-haul. This one is on a fence post up high in an open area where I "think" I'll be OK with summer grasses. It is loaded with lithium and the biggest card it'll take on a 30 sec or one minute rip.2 points

Black walnut do have juglan which supresses growth in other plants, but my grove is full of black raspberry which deer, fox, squirrels ,turkey, bear, and birds, use heavily. The nuts are eaten by turkey, bear, squirrel, and people! The hollow tree lets owls, raccoon, squirrels nest. Ive sold select trees for over 1 k apiece and use that $ to improve other parts of the property for wildlife.. just because they dont provide deer a boost is no reason to cut down a grove , they prefer deep fertial soil. And are important to many species. If you truly are a steward of the land all wildlife and habitat are important. Part of my small walnut grove...2 points

IMO that's the dumbest part of the crossbow laws. makes a very large percentage of them illegal to own. the trend is moving more in that heavy poundage and slim width design too.2 points

We had to hear about Trumps wall every two hours for four years, yet not a peep about Joe Biden promising to cure cancer. Strange https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2019/06/12/joe-biden-cure-cancer-campaign-richmond-bolduan-sot-ath-vpx.cnn Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro2 points

4/4 today and a big convincing win. The boys needed it they are now 2-8 on season...but being a new team put together only this fall they are making huge strides. Best part of today my son was chosen by the other teams coaching staff as our player of the game. This day in age when everyone gets a participation trophy these kids are hard pressed to know what it actually means to earn something . His mother and I were so proud that he has worked his butt off since November, stayed committed, and most importantly hasn't given up during some of the tough losses/learning experiences. My first compound bow from @The_Real_TCIII five years ago. Archery opened up a whole new world to hunting for me and really rekindled the interest I have for it. The fact that it was a Mathews helped, lol! Now I look forward to October 1 with high anticipation, rather than having to wait 6 or 7 weeks for gun season to start. I have to thank him for posting that in the Classifieds and his help in getting me started and set up properly. The second thing that comes to mind, which didn't cost me a dime, is this website forum. Not only have I learned a ton of things about hunting, I do enjoy the comradery and fellowship that this site offers. Yes, it can be a cranky and dark place sometimes, so I just skip that section or conversation because I am really only interested in the "outdoor" aspects of it. I have also been lucky enough to fish and or have a beer with some of the very best people on this site and I hope to meet many more others in the future.2 points

Buddy and I are planning our first bear hunt up in the Adirondacks for this fall. I know it's a low odds deal, but it'll be fun to camp and hunt for a few days. I killed a couple in Maine, over bait when I was younger, but I'd like to really hunt one on my own. I'm familiar with Saranac lake area, as well as Indian lake. We go there every summer to camp. Have seen bear sign around Indian lake, but not much. Starting to do research for the hunt, and it seems like Moose river plains comes up a lot as a good area. That doesn't really narrow it down though. It's a huge area (79,487 acres). I have no idea where to camp around Inlet, or what general area to hunt. Maybe I should take a weekend this summer and go scout. Any favorite campsites in the area? I have a canoe that might help access back country areas. Not afraid to take a compass heading, and strike off the trail, but what am I looking for besides oak and beech stands? Do they like swamps or deep timber? Are attractants worth it? Better to go early in the season, or into October? I have a bunch of Tink's bear incense sticks Have seen them at my camp in Naples, but it's few and far between. I'm not asking for anyone's honey hole, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.1 point

I think the best hunting gear investment I have made was a Milwaukee Heated Vest . I bought it last year and it worked like a charm . It kept these Old Bones warm .1 point

Unless I read it wrong , the NY Outdoor News article said the CrossBow Bill is put on hold again . It might not come up again until next year .1 point

I didn't want to clog up the live thread with questions,so i'll ask them here. i want to order a few emerger flies to try out but don't know what's sizes or types.I trying to cut back on the trail and error way it just leads to a shelf full of unwanted crap. Also I've been watching a lot of New fly fisher videos this morning the guy said feeding trout sit in front of rocks? I thought it was the opposite. I'm heading out this afternoon to try for browns1 point
