  1. Good looking but looks don't necessarily cut it in the field. If you're only field dressing a deer, a saw is never needed. There is no need to split the pelvis or brisket, IMNSHO. Most of the time, less is more when it comes to hunting knives for field dressing. Even skinning, quartering and boning out a game animal in the field takes far less blade than many think. Edge retention and blade geometry are paramount.......................

  2. I have a beagle x blue tick hound mix. I got him from a rescue in WV. He isn't much of a hunting dog. Never tried running rabbits, but he'll tree a squirrel like no one's business. I just can't shoot it because a gunshot sends him into the next county. He has a hell of a nose though. I've been playing around with training him as a blood tracking dog if I can only find the time. EDIT: Sorry for the massive pic. I can't figure out how to resize for the life of me.

  3. Just my opinion. If you have never hunted with archery gear, it would be a huge benefit, to take the archery course, before hunting with a crossbow. Even though it's not required to take the archery course at this time. Hunting with a crossbow is far more similar to archery, than hunting with a muzzle loader.

  7. I will be the last person to tell another how to do what ever they please. I myself do not cut the pelvis bone or the skin covering it I cut from the rib cage to where the pelvic bone starts. I have no need to dry out any more meat then is necessary by cutting through it and exposing it to air. for the record I have been a butcher for over 25 years not just deer but livestock also and believe me I have seen my share of field dressing jobs that make you say what were they thinking. .

  13. It should be clamped or tied in just BELOW the bottom of the grip. It should also not have any tension until the last inch of your draw and be fully raised when you hit full draw. Much easer to install correctly with a draw board. If you are around Rochester, happy to tie it in for you.

  15. I doubt they're counting many by voice because if you can hear the soft cooing of a dove you're pretty damn close! Also, that fact that you don't seem to think there are many doves in NYS is just the fact that you don't look for them or notice them because you don't care. If you have any interest in bird hunting and got the opportunity to hunt dove, I promise you'd notice them EVERYWHERE and then you'd get it. Believe me; they are here, there and everywhere. Sometimes by hundreds! Fun like you can't believe and tasty too.

  16. Saw this last night in NYC subway and then found the first Beaver forum I could find to post it. I thought it was interesting how much of America (as I understand it) was originally built on the trapping industry. Unrelated, I know, I just wanted to share with someone.

  19. The main reason I want a knife with a saw is for the stray branch for shooting lanes and ground blinds, secondary is for boning work.I have always done the brisket with my knife but hate doing it because on bigger deer its more difficult and can also be dangerous if you aren't paying attention.

  21. For those that say large bore air guns are suitable not for big game should educate yourselves on how lethal these are. Many states have allowed them for years. To call them BB guns is absurd. These guns drop deer no differently than any other legal means in place today. I would disagree with a special season for them, but to use during firearms season what's the big deal ?

  22. And the Panthers are in it! Been a fan since their beginning in the league. Not a big Cam fan as I don't really care for all the over the top showboating. But I do respect his athletic abilities. As a team, they are playing at the highest level. The Bronco's have a great defense, but I don't know if Manning can do enough on offense at this stage of his career. We will see. No matter who wins, during the game, I'll be drinking a couple beers, eating pizza and wings with family and friends, so I'll be a happy grampy!

  25. Well thanks everyone! Only plans for the evening is a grilled medium rare venny steak and a glass or two of wine with my sweetie. My wife may join us also - JUST KIDDING! And then probably out like a light at 9:00 seeing that it's work in the morning. Heck, it's getting to be 9:00 on a non-worknight too. Dang I'm old!

  27. It works, but for a new plot, you'll have to deal with a lot of competition and that usually means chemicals. Frost seeding works well in existing plots. If you simply have grass problems and not broadleaf competition, Cleth can be used if it is a straight clover plot. We've done it before. Plot doesn't come out looking ready for a magazine in many cases, but for the effort/money, it will draw deer in to feed.

  31. HHHMMMM...More restrictions, back ground checks,lists,laws...but that didn't stop 2 murders and a suicide by knife..by a clearly distraught young man.It also did'nt stop machete killing of a woman in Bronx by A known mentally ill man...That had recently been arrested for assault...where is all the out rage????? Why do we not know the blade makers,size,weight...why are ppl. Not calling for the use of plastic knives. Background checks for cutlery purchases etc. Etc....sarcasm here folks

  37. To be perfectly honest, there ain't a snowballs chance in hell that my wife will allow a beagle in the house (or yard) but a guy can dream, right? When ever I see a beagle I think of years gone by and the fun I had as a young whipper snapper, hunting with a knot headed female beagle named Samantha that was chasing bunnies! Heck, I couldn't have been 12 or 13 at the time. We never killed a limit, probably not even close but we did kill some. That said, I love the dogs and, even more......I love the stories. I've laughed so hard at the tales you guys/gals have spun! Those pics are a hoot too. OK, the truth is out, I hope the stories continue though.

  38. You need the Muzzle loading privilege (not a tag) to use a crossbow. Plus you need to sign and carry the certificate in the regs book. The muzzle loading tag is a BOW/MUZ tag. It is an identical to the BOW/MUZ tag you get with your bow hunting privilege except if you get both privileges one BOW/MUZ tag will be either sex and the other will be antlerless only. Still you need the Muzzle loading privilege (not a tag) to use a crossbow. No, you don't need a bow hunter course unless you want the bow privilege and a second BOW/MUZ tag. In addition you can use your regular hunting season tag during muzzle loading season to take a deer of either sex with a crossbow. Don't worry if this totally confuses you. There is a good chance things will change by October 2016. There may (likely) be a requirement to take a bow hunter course to use a crossbow. Those of you without past archery privileges should keep and eye open for the change. If the change happens bowhunting classes could fill up. That is unless they devise a method of being crossbow certified online. Are there any other instructors out there that have heard the same thing.

  40. I understand using a saw for limbs but gutting a deer??

  41. This deer was taken a couple years before I had a digital camera. If your talking live "on the hoof" shots, then "no" to that as well. I took a lot of film snap shots when we gathered to skin him and a couple others. I took quite a few of him at that time but we probably focused on the rack. I'll have to hunt those old photos up to see if I have any showing the mane. If your thinking it might be a Jackalope type enhancement it's not. I have seen a few others. Just not that pronounced.

  42. My responses in RED below. Beagles are best when run in packs of 2 or more. Each dogs has its weak & strong points. Having more than one on the trail increases the odds exponentially.

  45. Maybe if I use words you are used to hearing. Well stupid the point is they counted more Doves in the survey in NY than a similar survey counted Pheasants in the west where hundreds of thousands of birds are killed each year. Some how you still don't think there are a huntable population of Doves in NY. I guess Mike should just listen to you, the delusional pot head, about bird numbers in NY. Now go back to your he man coyote hater meeting, they need you. Its comical that you call some members anti hunting in other threads but you are in fact the anti hunter in every Dove thread there is.

  46. Those are good numbers of birds per hour. Above Pheasant survey rates from the west where they kill close to 200,000 per year and the numbers are considered fantastic. I suggest sticking to hating coyotes and smoking weed Fsw.
