  1. Went out to check trail cams today with my little one. I brought the gun along just in case and was glad I did. He was asleep when I shot and never even woke up. I was amazed. Only takes a second for those who are still trying, don't give up.

  2. Well , couldn’t get on a decent buck in bow or gun , took a doe the other day and that would have been fine if that ended my season . Last two sits zippo , today hopped in my only hang on , and in the open hardwoods . Difficult walk in land is flooded, can’t cross drainage ditch have to walk around extra 500 yards . So I’m on Stand maybe half an hour ,it’s 3:00 and I see doe running around , they come in close but keep looking back , I see more doe and a buck. the doe are all 20 -30 yards from me as I try to gauge the buck, he comes into 45 yards gives me a shot , straight down he goes. I put a second one in him as he tries to get back up . Climb down and as I fill out my tag the doe come back and stand 30 yards away .... 1 1/2 hour drag, guy hunting next woods over offers to come with ATV , but I was not about to ruin his hunt, so I ignored the text and stared dragging . Sorry only pic I took of deer , doe as I fill out tag .

  4. I don't understand how this is even remotely acceptable ? I might be jumping ahead of things but am I right in assuming the child had no ear protection? And even with ear protection, how close was the child to the muzzle ?? I don't care how big or small any deer is, if there's a potential to effect your child's hearing for the rest of his life, is it worth it? I hate that I sound like a liberal snowflake but I put myself in your shoes and can't imagine sending one with my infant strapped to my chest. Sorry to pee in your wheaties. 6. Yes yes and yes. He was on my back at the time with the muffs. He was sound asleep and had a cover over him. He jumped but didn't even wake up. Trust me when I say my kids come first! Like someone said no deer is worth it.

  9. Not the biggest in the world but nice & plump. .223 60 grain v-max @ 137 yards. Ran about 25 more and keeled over. I needed to fill a tag so we have meatballs and jerky for x-mas and time is running out.

  10. My son in law and his brother butchered my bear this past Saturday. Very tedious indeed.. I found it impossible to trim all the fat and gristle out. Mind you , This is the first bears I have done and I am not a professional butcher. We cooked a steak on the grill and half the steak was un-seasoned, the other half had salt, pepper and Montreal steak spice on it. The unseasoned half was delish... tasted a lot like beef to me with a hint of sweetness... the other half was equally good. The meat is tough, so extra chewing is necessary but the flavor was outstanding!

  11. First archery season for me this year. Passed on 11 dink bucks , tumor buck , busted drawing on a nice doe. Fawns , decent does too far off. Shooter bucks too far off. Gun season starts and same. Not sure how many hours in a stand but it’s a lot. Started to get burnt out , deflated, calling it quits and was very close to my second deerless season along with last year being my first. Daughter shot her first ( buck ) last year so that made it a great season. Someone made a golf related comment to keep me out here and it stuck. Brought up a club championship years ago where in dreadful rain and wind I shot 81 ( 9 over par ). It’s done , on paper and out of my control. The next weekend I shot 69 Saturday and 67 Sunday for the win 81-69-67. I put that experience into my hunting this year. The past is gone and out of my control. Been carrying my ML as primary gun all year as usual. Yesterday I asked daughter if I could borrow her Remington 870 youth 20. She gladly obliged. Got to stand at about 2 . My fawn friends arrive as normal to dig in the small plot. I notice movement coming from the west on woodsline into golden rod. West wind in my favor. Shooter buck I guessed at 100. Didn’t grab laser range finder out of backpack but looked like most of a sand wedge. He started directly towards me with only a head on shot. Then started diagonally and was getting closer. I turned on bushnell T optics and dang shooting rail is too low. Well Treeguy helped me set this stand in a 5 trunk maple. One trunk with a nice limb gave me the rest I needed. Put the T front shoulder and squeezed. Legs buckled under him. Racked another and kept eyes on him. 5-7 minutes later I see him trying to get up and head is raised. Put T on neck and sent another. Nary a twitch. First one went through boiler room. But I was taking no chances and no too dead. 81 yards. Buddy who’s property I hunt is in Ohio so no deer uber. Old school drag by horns most of way. Then hitting the uphill portion I grabbed the drag and shed some gear. You guys kept my head in the game , thank you for that. PMS and texts were blowing my phone up. Thanks for the congrats! Up in stand now trying to punch a doe tag. Guessing he’s 2.5. I like the dark chocolate rack. Congrats to everyone who’s gotten it done and good luck the remainder of the year.

  12. I cut down a big dead beech tree today on the edge of the yard. Soon as that sucker hit the ground, a "flock" of FOUR flying squirrels took flight and were reluctant to leave. For the next half hour they soared around the forest where their home tree once stood, which gave me a chance to run in and grab my camera.. Truly an AMAZING sight to see, but boy did I feel like a turd when the show was over. Obviously I had no clue they were in there. Eventually, they all found their way to another tree with a hole in it and never came back out. Afterwards I inspected the dead beech I had cut and found a hollowed out rotten section with a big nest full of squill shit inside. I've caught these guys on trail cams after dark before, but this is the first time I've ever seen one during the day. What an AWESOME aerial display of grace and precision from these little gliding rodents! I didn't think of it or I would have shot some video.

  15. No worries. I am glad you guys all care enough to ask and worry about my little guy. I actually put them on him alot when it's cold and I walk in the woods. One it keeps his ears warmer and if a stick slaps him in his ears it does not hurt him. Plus he stays asleep better and longer.

  16. If you really want to see how bad they spook, use video mode. I used to hang my cams like most guys do, about 4 feet up with a strap, and then I started using video mode on them. What I saw was crazy. Anytime I had deer look at the cam, and even sometimes when they didnt, Id see them turn inside out pretty quickly. Not all deer did that, but the vast majority did. I changed my strategy a few years ago, I hardly ever get deer looking at them or spooking from them anymore. Heres my strategy with cams. 1 - Black Flash. I cant stress this one enough, red IR cams are ok, but deer see them when they trigger. I actually think white flash cams probably spook less deer than red IR cams do. A white flash is probably thought of as lightning or something like that to a deer. A sudden glow that they can see, well, nothing natural about that. I prefer to stay away from both issues, so invisible flash it is. 2 - Put them up high. I put my cams at around 7 feet up on average. I use homemade screw in mounts that are fully adjustable and just angle them down. Having them lower makes for better looking pictures, but Im not looking to win any photo contests, Im looking to see what type of activity is going on, and get an idea of the bucks in the area. 3 - Location. I try to keep all of my cams in spots where I can check them without ever setting my feet on the ground. I like to drive my ATV or tractor up to them, swap the card, and leave as quickly as possible. The less disturbance, and scent left behind, the better. If theres a spot I want a cam thats not all that easy to get to, I either check it very infrequently, or I go with a cell cam, like I did this year. I will actually be switching all of the cams on the peoperty I own to Cuddeback black flash Cuddelink cams this coming year. The only time Ill have to physically go to them will be when the batteries need swapped out. 4 - Dont use straps. Think about it for a second, the straps are cloth, cloth holds scent longer than a hard, non-porous material. As I said above, I use screw in brackets and python locks where I feel they are needed. 5 - Let them sit outside. Before I ever take a camera out into the woods, I let it sit outside on the deck for a week or so. I dont turn it on, I just let it air out so to speak. I also put the mount and Python lock out there with it. Before I head out to put it in the woods, it goes into a plastic bag until I get to the spot its going to be hung. When i hang it, it gets sprayed down with scent killer spray just for good measure. 6 - Dont check them too much. 2 weeks is about as frequently as I check my regular cams unless its during the season, then I only check them when Im in that spot to hunt.

  18. It was really tough, Rob. Throughout the year, Jake's mobility decreased. We tried galiprant to minimal effect in Aug/Sept. From that point, I would pick up his back end and 'wheelbarrow' him outside to do his business several times a day. He had already lost his bladder control by that point, but we did what we could. About 2-3 weeks ago, he couldn't even stand on his own and I knew it was time to face the inevitable decision. Choosing this particular vet to come to the house for final accomodations proved to be the best way for us to honor Jake and say our goodbyes. We all camped out in the living room last night and spoiled Jake and the other pups with treats of salmon, cheese and bacon. It's been a tear-filled day for all of us, but Jakey is now at peace. I know we'll meet again one day, no doubt in my mind.

  19. This afternoon I said a tear-filled goodbye to my best friend, Jakey Dog. Always a puppy, Jake gave me and later my family, 16 years filled with love and great memories. Everyone loved Jakey, even people afraid of dogs. You were the best dog ever! You're in heaven now, my love, where I will see you again and give you a million more ear scratches. Jakey passed peacefully at home in front of the fireplace (his favorite spot), surrounded by his loving "pack". I am very thankful for Dr. Melanie from Lap of Love making the hardest decision of my life, the most compassionate experience we ever could have asked for. Sleep in heavenly peace, Jakey Dog.

  21. Out of likes, but yes, his quality of life definitely declined. We spent the past 4 months doing laundry 2-3 times a day after changing out his bed sheets. He just wasn't able to get around and do his normal dog stuff. Then in the middle of the night he'd sometimes bark or whimper if we weren't downstairs with him. However, his appetite never waivered and his spirit was always strong. I felt he deserved every chance to live we could give him despite the hardships.

  24. Wish this issue was up to the DEC's discretion!!! It's become an annual legislative "hot potato" item. Seems like the logical thing to do would be propose a bill allowing the DEC to decide if/when/how Xbows would be allowed. Be a great "pass the buck" opportunity for the legislators, which I'm convinced they'd jump at the chance to not do something!

  28. I don’t understand why people care if Xbow gets full inclusion? Especially if you hunt Private Land, you can still hunt however you want so who cares how other people hunt? Many states have had full inclusion for years. Ohio, PA, NJ, CT, etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. Wind changed direction after the rain cleared, blew my scent directly in front of me. Decided to get down and go for a walk once ł determined it wasn't letting up. Walked out to my southernmost property entrance. Walked up my dug road and after trekking 3/4 of it, methodically choosing my limited steps to be quiet as possible, the wind shifted AGAIN. ł stood still, hoping my stillness would somehow limit my scent destined for the area ł was stalking. Within 2 minutes something caught wind of me, bumped it over the ridge... gone from sight in seconds without offering a glance at any possible headgear. It is very steep slope and ł wasn't even going to attempt it with the snow ł had been trudging through. Walked back to my stand ł started the day in and hooked a left, uphill at a much easier to handle slope. Got to the old farm ł have permission to hunt and ł walked the wooded edge of the back pasture circling around where the bumped deer went, finally the wind was cooperating! A huge branch falls nearby and the deer ł have been unrelentlessly pursuing was bedded right next to the opposite corner about 150 yard away. With the crash of a tree chunk assumingly shifted by melting snow in it went. With the flick of a tail and a handful of effortless bounding strides it was veiled in the protection of 1'x1' neon green signs. That snow drifts on the hillside were 2'+ and made my 5 mile walk feel like 100 miles. As legal light comes to a close my neighbor messages me, he shot a big doe and needs help dragging it. Regardless of how trying it came be at times, ł wouldn't trade an unfruitful day in the woods for anything.

  42. This one took a little longer than expected with everything else going on this time of year, but he's pretty close to done for now aside from a few minor details and clean up. Also ran into some problems with my execution with the original idea and had to salvage what I could from it.... hence the hole in his chest, lol I may add some war paint when we get a break in the weather, but painting is really not my thing. Guess I'll wait and see if there's any interest in him as he is before I go adding any make up. Stands right around 5ft tall.

  47. It makes perfect sense for NYSDEC to handle the crossbow decision. But sadly, not too often do NYS lawmakers make sensible decisions. Let the DEC handle it. They know much more about it than big city politicians. Crossbow full inclusion, would have many older, and even some younger hunters, buying the tag to hunt that wouldn't otherwise. And anyone using a crossbow, should have to take the NYS Bowhunters Course.
