  1. So we just got back from driving in the SUV, searching for moose, in our spots we know have good success in past years. At 11pm we started to see moose, we got back to the hoise at 1:30am. We saw 5, and 3 were bulls. One we didn’t see horns, but a big pouch between his legs...one was a small like fork horn i guess you would call it, and one was big enough to have blades. The largest with blades was skittish, could get turned around quick enough. On this one particular road we were on, it is extremely desolate. 10-20 miles at a time where there is nothing at all. It is a great area to drive in, but my point to this is, we were driving slow at 25mph in a 55mph zone....see headlights a long ways behind us, probably a quarter mile back, hard to estimate since this is very flat of an area with long straight-a-ways. Well we see a moose on the opposite shoulder, trotting in our direction of travel. As we were seeing this, the headlights behind us are rapidly closing in. I say to Jenn that this guy is flying. So i was looking for a pull off to let him pass, so I decided to just put my blinker on, and pull over...Well he must have been doing 65-70mph, he caught up so fast. Then I see his driver side headlight flash, then the passenger side headlight flash right after! At that point he was not moving....That moose must have ran across in front of him. That moose, and driver were both lucky...then as the truck was passing us, you could tell he was at a good 3/4 throttle, or more...just flying. It’s scary to be honest. I remember one time years back, I was just getting here, on this same road, but miles further out. I was traveling at 35 in a the 55, because I know it is heavily populated moose country. We I had a moose run out diagonally from my passenger side heading in the direction I was traveling. I had a 2000 Civic at the time, years ago, no antilock brakes, so I was dragging the tires, the moose fell in the road, his hooves were caked in mud, and it made him fall. Thank god I missed him completely! I will never forget that. When I see people doing 65-70, or whatever they are going, I cringe. I don’t know if they just feel in a pickup truck, that they are high enough that the moose wont cone into the cab, of what...but still.

  2. Today we did 44 miles on the quad. We saw some great scenery on some trails we had never been on. We got to go over a bridge built for snowmobiles, and in the warm months you can ATV over it, it was pretty cool. At some points you were sharing the big dirt haul roads for the logging semi’s. That is always cool to see them ripping up the dirt roads, with a blinding dust cloud behind them. We did see a moose in the daylight today, which is getting more, and more difficult as the years go on. I believe this is my 18th year visiting this area, and moose were much more frequent. Concluded the daylight hours by picking up lobster rolls with the quad, and sat at the shoreline as the sun set, zoomed back to the house, making a cup of coffee, and are going to go look for moose on the road side.

  3. What a difference a day makes. This was my 5th set of 3...... not my first shots, but after yesterday's debacle, I figured I'd share. Started at about 20 yds and moved back each flight. The first 4 groups were saucer sized, which isn't great, but better than yesterday. Declared victory after set 5. Now onto cigars and beer! Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

  9. Went on a 3 hr boat cruise, and the boat literally played the Gilligan’s Island theme song, when we were out in the widest point of the lake, which is 18 miles wide, lol. I did learn an interesting fact, a home we see year after year, that is indescribably amazing, as far as the view from that home, etc...was a widow in which survived the Titanic.

  10. I just got an email from the DEC about that. DEC Delivers press release DEC Delivers Press Release - Information to keep you connected and informed from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Share or view as a web page || Update preferences or unsubscribe DEC Confirms Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in Putnam and Orange County Deer Disease is Not Transmissible to Humans; New Yorkers Encouraged to Report Sick or Dead Deer to DEC The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today confirmed that several white-tailed deer in the towns of Nelsonville and Cold Spring in Putnam County and near Goshen in Orange County died after contracting Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD). EHD is a viral disease of white-tailed deer that cannot be contracted by humans. EHD virus is carried by biting midges, small bugs often called no-see-ums or 'punkies.' Once infected with EHD, deer usually die within 36 hours. The disease is not spread from deer to deer or from deer to humans. DEC wildlife biologists collected half a dozen deer carcasses in Putnam County and submitted the carcasses to the Wildlife Health Unit for necropsy. Tissue samples were sent to the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University where the preliminary diagnosis of EHD was confirmed. DEC also sent samples from four deer from Orange County where the preliminary diagnosis of EHD was confirmed. The EHD virus was first confirmed in New York in 2007 in Albany, Rensselaer, and Niagara counties, and in Rockland County in 2011. EHD outbreaks are most common in the late summer and early fall when midges are abundant. EHD symptoms include fever, hemorrhage in muscle or organs, swelling of the head, neck, tongue, and lips. A deer infected with EHD may appear lame or dehydrated. Frequently, infected deer will seek out water sources and many succumb near a water source. There is no treatment for nor means to prevent EHD. The dead deer do not serve as a source of infection for other animals. EHD outbreaks do not have a significant long-term impact on deer populations. EHD is endemic in the southern states where there are annual outbreaks, so some southern deer have developed immunity. Generally, in the northeast, EHD outbreaks occur sporadically and deer in New York have no immunity to this virus. Consequently, most EHD-infected deer in New York are expected to die. In the north, the first hard frost kills the midges that transmit the disease, ending the EHD outbreak. Hunters should not handle or eat any deer that appears sick or acts strangely. DEC will continue to monitor the situation. Sightings of sick or dying deer should be reported to the nearest DEC Regional Office or to an Environmental Conservation Police Officer. In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Markets has alerted deer farmers and veterinarians throughout the state to be aware of the disease and to report suspicious cases. 15. My well traveled Buck 110 has seen alot of gutting! But honestly, it isnt the most hand friendly knife, but holds an edge forever. No pics, but my Grohman #1 ( I have four of them) actually is my favorite deer hunting knife. Great ergonomics, holds a fantastic edge, very reasonably priced. The Old Henry Sharp finger is another great knife...goofy looking but it fits the hand great, holds a good edge and isnt bulky. All my knives have a lanyard (essential) so it can dangle as I reposition/etc. so I dont have to set it down.

  23. I use rope I got when I worked for the FD, and we got new bailout systems , we could keep our old ones, and many gave me theirs . If your “nylon “ rope is static kermantle climbing rope sure , if it’s slippery plastic feeling stuff form Lowe’s , Hell no that can be to slippery for the Prusik or any self tensioning hitch to grab . Also the line you make into a closed loop, then tie into a Prusik needs to be of a smaller diameter ,then the safety line .

  30. The name "Ebola virus" is derived from the Ebola River. "Zika virus" was named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. "Lyme disease" was named after Lyme Connecticut. The early consensus of the origin of this current pandemic was from a wet market in, wait for it - China. Before the lefty loons (and I am NOT disparaging Democrats, just the far left loons) lost their minds to Trump derangement syndrome, it was common place to name a virus after either it's origin or place of discovery. Now it's racist to say such a thing. I personally think Trump has the personality of a brick, but your assertion is laughable.

  41. Yes, the NRA opposed universal background checks last year. The bill in the House of Representatives as originally written would have required your neighbor pass a background check before you they could handle any of your firearms for any reason. Even if you were in the privacy of your own home and you were just showing off your brand new gun. Just because many people support universal background checks, doesn't mean they support every stupid law our legislators come up with!
