  2. Worked til 3. Home by 3:15. At Treeguy’s at 3:30 on a ridge. Standing behind a big tree cutting the blowing snow outta my eyes. Scent blowing down along the ridge top , can see down below , what’s coming at me and what might enter the field to my left. 4:39 I see a shooter doe approaching , then another behind it by 20 yards. First is down below me at 35-40 yards. Here we go. Settle the crosshairs on the front shoulder with the ml. Pull back the hammer and ready to send it. Catch movement behind the second doe. Big body buck and well outside the ears. Ease the hammer down. All I can see now is back half , lots of trees between us. Then I have head and top half of neck. Tempting at the neck but wait for the front half to come in to the clear. Step to side of big tree and use it as a rest. He clears giving me front half. Hammer back , center the crosshairs, boom , smoke . 4:40 and 1 minute of legal left. No idea which way they run. Descend hill , no blood , no hair. Text Treeguy . He comes and helps to look . We find nothing . Swing and a miss on a dandy. I can’t recollect ever missing one before. Sadly have lost 2 over the many years . So I guess it could be worse. I’ll chalk it up to 2020. Hindsight I could have shot the first doe as she was clear broadside at 30-35 yards. But those antlers !! He was 50-60 tops. Guess my threading the needle didn’t fair so well. Now I’m afraid my guns off too though. Ballz is all I can say. Times a ticking.

  5. Took this buck with the bow, a couple days ago. I’ll probably send a tooth out for exact aging, but judging by tooth wear, he’s 7.5 years old or older.

  9. I wasn't really sure if I wanted to make a post about this or not but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share it here. I've been very fortunate to take several bears over the years and when I cut a bear track last Saturday I couldn't help but shift my focus from deer hunting. It wasn't real fresh but several times in the past I've been able to follow older tracks a short distance to an area where the bear has hung around for a while and the sign got much fresher. I figured I had nothing to lose and I knew of some thick beech brush and left over tree tops from logging that I'd seen bear sign in just a few weeks ago. Since the tracks headed back toward that general direction I circled back and around the whole area and found no tracks coming out. I met up with my dad and I put him on the downwind side of the brush lot where if the bear went back out the way it came in that my dad may be able to get shot. I circled back around and still hunted my way through the brush and after about an hour and a half I was getting to within 75 or so yards of my dad but still hadn't cut a bear track. A few minutes later I could see his orange hat through the brush and thought the bear must have angled further than I thought since still no tracks. As I came up to a tree top I'd stopped for a minute and just looked around while deciding which way to go around it and saw a fresh track just 20 or so feet in front of me. I followed it with my eyes and could see it went through the tree top I was standing next to and was quite shocked to see a bear staring at me through the brush at only 15 or so feet. I've heard of bears holding tight to cover but never expected it would let me walk that close without busting out of there. Everything happened real fast at that point as I immediately took aim under the chin while also taking a step backward to try to get something between me and the bear. It felt like a now or never moment and in a split second from seeing the bear one shot to the neck put it down instantly.

  18. Get back to me after you kill a deer with a bow. And by the way, the ham shot was a shot made after I pulled the first shot. Really it was a smart move that only a bowhunter would understand. It was very effective too. I bet you'd love to get another shot at that fox to end its suffering.....

  23. The only time you can bait a deer with a snowmobile, you lay down a few passes with a sled and I guarantee deer will walk where the sled drove.

  25. That’s a big threat for sure . Its apparent another attack will come from guns being a “ health care crisis .” https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/biden-gun-violence-a-national-health-crisis-that-warrants-an-emergency-response/ I’ve got guns ,ammo, mags on back order. As well as , many off the books now . Those that think the “ ammo shortage “ will be over in a few months are in for a rude awakening. You ain’t seen nothing yet fellas .

  30. I’ve become the bionic man! Heated socks, heated vest and chemical hand warmers. Isn’t science great? Anyhow, I’m back in the shooting shack but now with 6” of snow on the ground and 20 degrees with a light breeze from the north. Tracks everywhere, especially under my bird feeders but also in my food plot. Hoping the group I saw yesterday comes back, just a bit closer.

  34. I’ve already aged it by tooth wear, and have had someone more experienced do it also. Tooth wear isn’t generally known to be as exact as cementum though, especially once you’re up over the 6.5 y/o range. If anything, sending the the teeth out, will allow a great opportunity to compare the 2 aging techniques

  41. Hence the "beholder" description. Some don't get it but that's fine, they are trophy hunters and in it for the antlers. How anyone can shoot a deer and not be thrilled with the meat is beyond me.........
