  5. IMHO, I'd rank them in the same category for reliability. Here are 2 different bucks from my own personal collection. Both are deadheads that I picked up, both of which I have history with. Both have the same length skull. On the right is a 3.5 yo, on the left a buck that is at least 8.5 based on several years of sheds /trail cam pics...

  9. Ive had one trailcam stolen ever. I put it up next to the neighbors pool where his wife sunbathes and that SOB stole it for sure! He still wont talk to me. Whatever Seriously- Ive had one cheap trail cam stolen ever. it was on state land 1000 yards from my house. I put it there just to check for a once in a while spot. The best part about it was i realized i had left the card with pics on it from one of my hunting spots that had a nice 11 point on it. I bet that guy still hunts there hoping for a big buck!

  10. I am getting to the age where I figure I deserve a trophy for just climbing that "killer hill" behind the house. I'm not looking for the biggest deer in the valley anymore. I don't have to prove anything to myself or anyone else other than the fact that I still can get out there and hunt.

  15. After mounting 200+ NY bucks over the past 6 years...I'd say skull size isn't a great indicator of age. Most 3.5 yr old bucks have an eye to nose measurement of 7.25" but some will go 7.5". Older bucks will typically require a 7.5" form but can also go 7.25". Between these two sizes 90% of the deer I get in will be covered. Every year you get a few larger bucks in that 7.75-8" range. I think only 2 of the 40+ deer I took in last fall and one cape donor buck will take a form with an ETN measurement >7.5". In 2020,I took 3 in over 8" (including my own and 2 others that were both shot by forum members here). That being said, once you cut the skull plate off you can instantly tell the age class of a buck by the thickness of the skull plate. A fully mature 5-6.5 yo buck's skull plate will be 2-3x thicker than that of a 3.5yo. So, I guess I'd say the weight of a skull is it better indicator than the size.

  16. Here's a little tidbit from the OP's OP........... "Hunters will not have exclusive rights to 400+ acres. There will be some local neighbor hunters. The hunting pressure is very light." I doubt Gman has any connection to this. He really should have done a disclaimer.

  23. For your information, it was the US Constitution that was used to give them the right to vote. Their rights were being violated by Democrats until it was challenged in the Supreme Court. The US Constitution is the greatest legal government document in the history of the world. It's the politicians that are voted into office that are the problem.

  24. Ph is good, but your Organic Matter means alot as well. Check your OM % .. a lower PH with high "OM%" can still produce great results. the beauty of soil.. My Camp property in Central Steuben County started out at 4.8ph and full of Shale, where my home property 20 miles west has the most perfect growing rock "less" soil you could ever imagine. Black in color.. I add lime every 5-7 years just to "spruce" it up.. but rotating crops, and planting big diverse blends will keep your soil healthier than just adding lime.. keep things growing or planted in the soil at all times of year.. worms are the soils best friend.

  29. Just to correct a myth leftists are pushing at this time, Conservatives are not saying the don't want a black woman on the Supreme Court. They would be perfectly happy to see Condoleeza Rice, Winsome Sears, Alveda King or any other black woman who reveres the Rule of Law and is a Constitutional literalist. It's not about sex or race. It's about not putting a political activist in a position to make law, rather then rule on a law's Constitutionality.

  30. Response to a legitimate discussion: A veiled attempted to indicate that the statement was somehow racist: "This may be disturbing to some, but there is such a thing as a qualified black woman." State justifications that the conduct is acceptable because the other guy did it first: "How is this any different than Trump promising to appoint Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v Wade?" Then engage in childish name call and attempt to belittle others: "Nothing outrageous or inappropriate. Bunch of dainty snowflakes." Then play the game that other guys must be acting like a victim to feel morally and intellectually superior: "It’s amusing to see it used against crying libs when conservatives are constantly crying about some (usually fictitious) sense of victimization." No post stated anyone felt victimized or attacked: "As a white dude, I don’t feel victimized or attacked by it in any way." Still didn't answer my simple yes or no question and then make the statement that blacks were wronged before so reverse discrimination is acceptable today: "I’d encourage you to consider the historical context that adds asymmetries to the counter example you propose. For far too long, black folks where legally not allowed to participate. Though those laws have been overturned, in far too many instances they remain in place de facto. His proclamation brings attention to this gap and I feel that it’s a positive step in the right direction." I guess by that reasoning it's accepted for a person in authority to make the statement they are providing a benefit to another based upon color and gender; but only if some other guy did it first, the person complaining is a whiney victim, and must have felt under attack, or justified to make up for prior egregious atrocities. I would like to hope we, as citizens, hold our elected officials to the highest moral, ethical and social standards; but I guess some don't feel that way and hypocritical actions are excused or explained away... Thank you all who responded maturely for a spirited debate on this thread.

  31. And some of us on here don’t understand that not all hunters have endless parades of deer or countless hours to hunt or desire to wrap their hands around bone. Like you said, whatever floats your boat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  33. That is interesting, and indicates that most of the skull size (not thickness) growth might happen by 3.5. A combination of three crappy aging methods (antler size, body size, and skull size) might work ok up to 3.5. After that, a skull-thickness caliper, that would fit into the eye socket of a euro, might make a good aging tool.

  35. Don't bother securing cameras has been my experience. Had more stuff stolen that was locked than unlocked. Just note it on the expense side of hunting that losses will occur. Relative to the action, posting, cell cameras, and being very firm when reasonability is not prudent. Proactively reaching out to LE and neighbors is also good to establish relationship. Trespassing might be the lynchpin to the worst part of hunting ethics and other people.

  36. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. All four of these are local Steuben County bucks. On the bottom are two average 3.5 yo type deer for this area. Above them are fully mature bucks.

  41. I guess I read it in the context of someone that has invested heavily in the property over time, has a good program in place and is not gonna just let any bunch of wahoos hunt there. There is significant cost of taxes and maintenance associated with a property like this and to offer it at a price of less than $60 per guy per day seem vey reasonable to me... I know what it takes to try to maintain and manage 115 acres and the cost of taxes, etc...

  43. The current owner does it that way. He offered to sell me his ATV with plow, but it’s way cheaper for me to just add a plow to my Dad’s. It’s single lane all the way downhill to road. So figured I could just do a few small downhill rides to clear it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  44. 182 dressed weight seems right about on the average for a 3.5 based on my limited experience, so the DEC probably had it right. I have plenty of light, red-eye, spring-bock, and 12 horse in stock now (all in cans) so hydration shouldn’t be an issue if you stop by, and you are welcome anytime.
