  2. Kid we took out for youth got the 3.5 we’d been letting age up. Rather than be salty he didn’t make it to 4.5 I’ll post a pic for others to enjoy. Seriously, if someone is happy with a buck don’t be a douche bag. You win some you lose some but act with dignity. Wouldn’t want that loser mindset as a neighbor.

  3. Buck down! He came strolling in, nose to the ground the entire time. I hadn't even planned on hunting today but my wife encouraged me to go out later in the day. No treestand, no blind, I sat on the ground just waiting to see if anything would come around. As dumb luck would have it, this is my first mature buck I've ever killed and I wasn't even trying. 20 minutes after I sat down back against a tree, boom. I had been seeing this buck on a few of my cams, one in particular that I took down awhile ago as movement went cold. Bullet went in from the shoulder and out the opposite side, he went about 10yrds before I heard the crash. His heart was a jellified mess. Savage 220, 3M.

  5. Hey everyone, haven't been on here much with the new job and have had very little time off. Missed all of bow season. Made sure I was off this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sat dark to dark on Friday with the crossbow and didn't see a single thing. Went back to the same stand this morning, not sure why since I saw nothing yesterday. Well I sat thru lunch without seeing anything. Finally about 2:30 I look over my right shoulder and there is a very small deer just outside the thicker stuff. Think it was probably a button but not sure. Was just glad to see something, it quickly went back in the thicker stuff and I figured it was bedded in there. At 3:30 I thought I heard a grunt but with the wind I wasn't sure. I waited till it was calm so it could be heard and hit by grunt tube a couple times. 30 seconds later i hear crashing and see the white tail of what I assume was the button bounding away. Crap, that wasn't what I wanted. Not even a minute later this guy comes out of the thick behind me on my left, I look saying what are you, get a glimpse of the rack and say to myself besides dead...lol. I shoot and he runs 30 yards, starts plowing and I put another one in him. Was a little disappointed to see the 2 on one side but the rack is unique. Glad I could punch a tag with the limited time I have.

  7. My youngest son and my grandson both got a deer . Youngest son got a 7 point and grandson got a 3 point . they started out with a big problem in the morning . Neither of the ATV's would start so they had a long walk to get to their stands .

  8. Practicing QDM is great, but that doesn't entitle you to all of the deer. All it took was one guy killing "your" deer and now you aren't letting them pass anymore? Sounds like your real devout to QDM anyways ... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  9. The regulation you quote applies to areas where centerfire rifles are not legal during the deer season. Does not apply to most areas of NYS.

  11. Wasn't in the stand 45 minutes and I saw a little buck run behind me, then I saw he was chasing a doe that I never saw. They did a big loop back into the thicket, they came back out about 10 minutes later and she came to 30yds on field edge so I decided to break in my new rifle. She went 25 yds and tipped over. Drove the truck right to her. Home and skinned by dark. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  13. Seen a nice buck about 615 this am. About 930 seen 3 doe, shot a doe at 230 pm, and seen an 8 at 430. Very good day of hunting. Shot her with the 270 using Hornaday 140 grain sst. Dropped on impact. Tore up the front half of her. The biggest complaint I have had with that gun is lack of knockdown power/ no blood trail. Hopefully that issue is fixed /

  16. When I was a young guy I would be out there, these days I am a "ruminator", the season is long and there is plenty of time for me to hunt in weather a bit more enjoyable. Besides I have a half a day worth of chores to do here on the farm where there is never any breaks from the weather, every day, 365 days a year. Looks like I will be clearing some serious snow over the next day or so. Al

  21. Got about 6 inches of fresh snow that has me mildly excited, going to try and make it 3 years in a row with a single shot I think. Time for the TC Encore with the 45-70 barrel to earn it's keep. I will be interested to see how the old 350 gr Barnes pointed soft points perform.

  26. Most folks feet get cold for 2 reasons. First, poor circulation (boots too tight), and second wet feet (either from sweating or external soaking). The principles above hold true for feet too. A wicking sock (nylon dress socks work), an insulating sock (wool), and insulated (3M thinsulate) waterproof breathable (leather or Goretex) boots (not rubber). The boots should be loose enough to freely wiggle your toes but not allow your whole foot to slide up and down when walking. Electric heated socks, if needed. Importantly, know your foot size and try on boots with the socks as you intend to wear them. Buy based on the fit not the size marked on the shoe or box. If you have a wide foot you need wide boots, not the next half-size up. Appreciate everyone's tolerance for the cold is different based on conditions and our own physiology. You need to dress for what works for you and the activity.

  28. Sorry to hear. Stay safe! Went down the same road a year ago with bad surgery outcome. Damned near killed me. Literally! And gun season found me siting in a blind watching deer but unable to pull the trigger for fear of blowing my incision inside apart. I had several chances at the same really big buck within a few yards of me but could not muster the courage to risk pulling the trigger. My neighbor ended up shooting him.

  30. Test question: 22 degrees + gusts at 29mph= 1. Freeze your ass and go anyway? 2.Stay in where it is warm and have breakfast? 3.Stare out the window for the next several hours in the warm house, and ruminate about how you should be outside freezing you ass chasing deer?

  31. The hunter. Boyd is known to be a great bow hunter and shot. It seems every year I hear from someone about the big buck he got.

  32. Lots out there on this topic. This is the short of it. Down is warmest, next is wool, and then 3M Thinsulate. Need to layer correctly. Base for wicking moisture (sweat), then loft for warmth/heat retention, followed by barrier for wind/rain protection. Many folks are having good results with electric heated vests. Most heat is lost from head and neck area so do not forget to cover them up too.

  33. Just before sunset I watch a doe and her fawn enter the field above me, about 150 yards away. I watched them putter around there a bit, and then they walked the trail in front of me to the lower field. They passed about 60 yards, and I let them walk. About 15 minutes later here comes another deer into the upper field. This one is a nice 2.5 year old 8 point. For whatever reason it felt like my heart was gonna pound out of my chest. I was able to keep my head calm though and watched him feed in the upper field through my scope. I decided if I could get a good shot on him I would take it rather than wait for him to decide to follow the does because I was afraid it would be too dark. I let him browse around up there and kept the scope on his vitals. When he finally turned perfectly broadside, I even waited until his front leg on my side went forward, then held low with full intention to put it behind his elbow and into his heart. I pulled the trigger and he blew out of there like he was on fire. I waited a few minutes then got down, and slowly circled into the wind to try and get around in front of where he ran. I really though I would find him piled up as I circled to where he was standing when I shot. No blood, no hair, no deer! I got to where he was standing and there in the dirt directly under where he was standing is where the shot hit , leaving a gouge in the ground and dirt kicked all over from the miss. In hind site, I guess trying to hold so low was not such a good idea. Had I held mid body, I would be putting a pic of me and the deer on here. But, in the end it was a fun opening day, and I'm glad it was a clean miss rather than chasing a deer all over in the dark. : )

  37. The law is written "fireproof". DEC says they will accept plastic. But that doesn't change the law. Our legislators are idiots. Details matter.

  38. The law is ridiculous! The same criminal that will steal your gun, will steal your locked fireproof hardsided case (with your gun in it)! ...and if he/she gets caught, they will be released no-bail for this non-violent crime (theft).

  39. I hope you guys can still reconnect a time or two each fall. Hope he can make the drive up or you can meet in the middle or possibly hunt FL deer? I know how you feel, I didn't get to enjoy it as long as you did. But my hunting camp weve owned for 30 years now. It was my dad, my b rother myself, my grandfather, dads best bud and his son. It was great times. good laughs, good memories, My dad passed in '16.. and his buddy did a few months ago. His son and I as well as my brother want to kind of get back to our roots as kids but its hard with life, I cant hunt a whole lot with my family needs. Id be lucky to stay the night at camp without them a night a year. It just doesn't feel the same anymore and its a bit sad to say the least. But i guess that's life for some.. I started hunting at camp before legal age and now at 36 my brother and I own the property together. ITs still my home away from home. I just don't get to use it as often as id like.. even though im only 30 minutes away at most. Drive over hunt quick, head home.. Kind of takes the joy out of hunting some days.. Probably why i rarely hunt solo anymore.. I enjoy the comradery more than the hunt itself..

  40. Jokes aside I will be driving 90mins away and then a 45min hike up a mountain but my son will be with me. We have no intel on this location, no cameras. So opening day will be like old days, hope and pray something crosses our path.
