Which part of NY produces the biggest deer?

NY is very diverse as most of you know. I am wondering from your experiences, what part of the state produces the biggest bucks and what part has best hunting overall. Currently I live in 6a and hunting is poor. IMO the season is too long, the winters are tough And coyotes are prolific here putting a lot of pressure on the herd. I will travel to western NY to fill my tag this yr.

Best bet is to look at harvest reports and publications like the Big buck club

WNY is an odd mix in itself. Where I hunt in 9T, no doe tags. Go about a half hour north to 9M, you're practically guaranteed a DMP. Even within a given area there are significant variations. We have access to land in two valleys about a mile and a half apart in 9T. One has some seriously average bucks, the other regularly holds monster deer.

My guess is NYAntler will have some good info for you. He is heavily involved in the Big Buck Club if I'm not mistaken.

Without looking at any data, I would guess generally LI followed by WNY, with some monsters in the ADK that are very hard to hunt.

 

As I think about it, Southern Tier is pretty darn good too.

have only hunted WNY but I've seen some decent bucks taken. Especially them corn fed ones.

I would say Brooklyn or Queens but heard there are some Monsters in the Bronx Zoo

seriously though Long Island seems to have been tagging some really nice ones too

i have only hunted and still hunt, from Wayne county, south through ontario, Steuben and Allegheny county.. and have seen plenty of P&Y bucks in all of them.. 

 

as far as DMP tags go, the closer to Lake ontario you go, your chances seem to be great.

 

The WNY/Finger Lakes region produces a ton of deer every year

It changes every so many years... lately WNY seems to be the hot spot with long island areas right on their heals. Madison County is pretty good as well in CNY.

Parts of Niagara and erie county that basically have city deer roaming and a few locals with permission to hunt what little spots there are ,usually haul in some monsters.

LI has some monsters, and their non-typs are downright ugly racks, but they are big ugly racks, lol.

 

wNY in general is too big of an area to just throw out there in my book. But, going any smaller, and people start to stress. So, wNY it is!

LI and Western NY produce the most large racked deer.  Western NY basically by volume I would think has the most.

Many of the big deer in NYS live their entire lives in peoples' back yards in suburbia or small towns. Places off-limits to any kind of hunting.

Good genetics can be found in much of the state, but good hunting is becoming rare.

Defiantly anywhere other than Long Island.  All of our Bigger deer got fed up with the squirrels taking their acorns,and moved upstate.  Nothing here but a few scrawny looking does and a button buck or 2.....

And Onondaga Co where the 36 ptr was shot this week. Same guy shot a 170 or 180 last year as well.

_{All I ever see in the woods or on trail cameras are squirrels, Really thin does, trespassers, quads, and  Mushroom hunters.  The woods out here are like Grand Central Station.... I say head North, like near the border.  Some big guys up there.}
