Our golden retriever is very happy to jump in a car but after that game over. She's brutal. Wines , anxious , tries climbing in front seat. We tried some pheromones put on a handkerchief and it calmed her down a lot.  As to the point of tolerable and not rotten in the car

Do you know someone with a side by side utv?  I know shatz preferred riding in mine (with proper restraint) before she got comfortable in a truck.  I think it felt less shut in for her.
