Well from what I read the families on the show spend a great deal of time in Fairbanks when not, up North hunting or trapping .

I know a couple folks who live in the AK, they work tons of hours for 7/8 months then go to Hawaii for the “ winter “. One lives where some other AK show is filmed and say they all live in town, and just film out at their hunting shacks.

But no I could not live like they do on that show .

Our one friends son is up crab fishing now as he does from September to May every year .

Shows are as fake as..Amish mafia.  They all get paychecks and have piles of video people behind the scenes.

Would be cool to go out there and stay a week or two for the lifestyle.

I know what some of you are saying the show is this or that and I’m not disagreeing Or agreeing but  put yourself in the situation not so much with the camera on you.  Many if you said you’d survive you can grow and kill but nobody is mentioning the weather. Hardly any daylight and ball chilling temps.

When i was younger I wanted to live in Alaska off the grid, but now I like running water, flushing toilets, electric, and the basics like toilet paper and beer. I enjoy camping for a week, but wouldn't want to live like that. Could I, maybe, hope to never find out.

It would be an adventure for sure, my buddy lived in "off grid" Alaska for some winters tending to sled dogs way above the arctic and he said the cold was unreal and it was much like a third world country.

He enjoyed the experience but living in a cabin in that harsh environment was a daily struggle. Chores like feeding dogs frozen salmon that had to be cooked and gathering water were daily chores that took great preparations. 

Maybe in my twenties I would have enjoyed that, but not nearing 60....their tough people and its their way of life....

The best way is the way the Kilchers did it. Turn one of the daughters into a country music star and then you'll have all kinds of excavators and bulldozers and stuff to do whatever you want to do.

I'd like to think I could have done it. Getting a few too many years and body breakdowns now to want to try. I believe I could if I had to.  I like to think I am pretty knowledgeable and resourceful with a faint hint of McGiver. 

 

The show I like is Alone. No cameras there except what the survivalists self shoot.  one medical check up a week. Last person standing wins the 500k. I think the one winner had to go over 3 months. In my book to prove you can do it you almost have to go a year and go through all the seasonal changes.

The climate is what I couldn't stand. Heck, we've got about as much winter as I can tolerate right now. Add to that the winters with short daylight hours, and it would be a good recipe for insanity. Also, whoever your sharing your winters with through the Alaskan winters had better be a pretty good match in terms of personality or cabin fever would quickly turn to cabin homicide .... lol.

Really, it all looks great in the few short summer months...all the beautiful scenery and good fishing, and great hunting. But that season is not nearly long enough to make it a great place to live. And even those summer months have a bug population to drive a sane man absolutely raving mad.

No. NYS will do just fine....Taxes and all.

That one show Mountain Men had the one goof Eustace. He was in North Carolina mountains. That seemed about right for it...lol

Well either you would learn fast to live that way  if you had to or be dead.

I'd like to think I could do it if forced into it for some reason. I do think I would enjoy a 2-3 week camping trip that is cut off from the outside world. Only supplies are what you can carry in and hunt/fish for. It would take a lot of planning. Heck after my last 2 days of work i'm ready to be cut off from the outside world now.

The Kilchers are homesteaders and don't live off grid.

The last Alaskans live in extreme remote Arctic National Park for hunting and trapping seasons. I've read the book about Heimo and his wife Edna, great read and wild way to live. Life Below Zero also is entertaining to watch and the rugged scenery is always outstanding.

The Kilcher's want you to believe they live way out in the boonies and have to hunt for all of their own food. Fake nonsense!

For survival shows, I like Naked and Afraid. Honestly I could care less about the nudity, most of the people on there I dont want to see naked. Its a great premise and I know that its legit, my girlfriends niece is in the works to be on the show. My girlfriends brother lives in Oklahoma and has a decent chunk of land. He tried to do it on his own on his land and lasted 2 days before he was tired of the insect bites and said the hell with it lol. I think his daughter wants to show him she can do something he cant lol.

Yep, Ive noticed that.

There are some rules about what items you can bring. I dont believe you are allowed to bring insect repellent.

I have done seven trips to Alaska and  have spent as much as two weeks  tenting camping in VERY remote areas...

I love the state from June until mid September....Before and after that, the weather SUCKS....Great place to visit , but I would not want to live there...

There was this one Big Burly African American guy  on that show Alone. The first show it has them at home with family and getting ready to go. They were going to Vancouver Island I think. He kept talking about how he was gonna make that place his bitch. He tapped out the first night when he heard something growl in the darkness....LMAO
