  1. That right there is desperation qualification testing... I've been going out daily with my three arrows...but this year due to the knee I haven't put the time in with the tree stand practice...I'm not concerned though as long as I continuously remind my self to bend at waist...30 yrds has me hitting 1-2 inches to the right of dead center...close enough of a bulls eye as I need..... the 2in. mark is because I've ruined a couple of shafts this year so I pull the 2nd shot a tad on the 3-D...shooting instinctive I have to be a bit careful staying at long distances only...for it will some times cause my closer shots to hit a bit high...this weeks practice is strickly blind...in that I will walk away from the target at different angles stop turn and shoot...not knowing distance not straight on and I have a light lawn chair I'll sit in to shoot from as well...I'm Happy with the results

  4. All the big guys have evaporated. Probably the last look at groups like this for this year. Now they are out nibbling on weed and rye growth in this field and about 300 yards away was a green soy field. Go figure.

  5. What is a Pope and Young State? Last time I checked NY had several entries every year. In the last 10 years I have seen bucks that would make the book every year, just my fault I haven't done my job to get close enough.

  6. June through the beginning of November is my busy season. I average 60-65 hours a week, spiking as high as 90 on occasion. Try balancing that with a family, then adding to that trying to get practice / hunting time. Also, living in NYC, it can be difficult to find a place to shoot, even when I do get a moment to myself on a Sunday. That being said, I bought a brand new release last week, "dusted off" my bow that's probably been in its case since May, and put 30/30 into the kill zone of my target at 20 yards. Next Sunday I'll get out to the range (hopefully) and get some 30 yard practice in. I'll feel as confident as ever going into the field, even if I only get to shoot 2 or 3 more times before I get a chance to go hunting, which at this point looks around mid October. The main reason is, I don't take stupid shots. If the shot isn't right, I don't take it. It's that simple. The risk of wounding and losing a deer by trying a low percentage shot just isn't worth it to me. Would I love more free time to practice? Of course, I'd love more free time to do a lot of things, but sometimes you just have to play the best you can with the cards you're dealt.

  9. only thing is he wont take money from us, we have tried for 4 years to give him money he owns 125 acres out of the 125 only about 75 is huntable, We agreed at the beginning to pay for all the land at 10 dollars an acre, we gave him the cash, and a few days later he came back and gave it back saying give me some venison, and you can hunt it all you want, we approached again this summer with the same offer, he just wont take anything from us, In return we fix fences and throw hay, chase cows in the middle of the night, but he wont take money,

  11. It wasn't us who left that mess. You didn't even let us into your cabin when we did your food plots. Didn't even offer us a stinking glass of water actually. Next year we are going back to trespassing on your land when you aren't there.

  12. Well who ever they were if they said the primary goal of QDM is for bigger racks, they don't know their A$$ from their elbow. When all the other components are implement correctly and the results show, that MAY be a benefit.

  17. 3 out of 5 in 8" at 25 and they call that good enough to get into one of these programs? That is disgusting. I would rather see them say you get one arrow and if that is in the 8" circle ok. I wouldn't walk into the woods if I was shooting like that. (not about you I am talking about the program qualifications)

  18. Never too late to scout! I scout while deer hunting just like turkey season. Ive found spots before and hung stands and hunted the same day. Is it really what you want to do...no...but it has worked for me in the past.

  19. stand site...tucked into the trees....and surrounded by trails and dropping acorns....there are 4 trails that come into that little hub...water near by.......the clover trails.... acorns...bedding to my south east and to my East and just 40 yrds from the base of the hill...before any things said...I know the routes these deer take yearly for 15 years now the hill location...not a problem.....it will be a good gun stand as well..if I don't move it after archery tags are filled...Here is my 360 degree view......I think it'll work...

  23. I will get the camera back as well and Doc, to answer your question. Over the years the property was allowed to be hunted by Tom, Dick and Harry and anyone else who asked permission. 18 months ago new owners and real farmers bought the property. They witnessed first hand the number of hunters as they chopped corn so this year have made a point of weeding out the hunters. The younger family is starting to take some things over and I kinda got lost in the shuffle. But now my son and I, it appears wil be one of the few outsiders allowd to hunt as we live next to the land.

  24. I have friends at work that hunt and complain they don't see deer like they use too. When I ask where they hunt they tell me the same place they have for last 20 years. My next question usually results in puzzled looks. What have you done to the property to help them? The answer is sometimes food plots, usually its nothing. DOES ANYONE REALISE THAT WOODS MATURE??? The brushy draw they once hunted is now 10In diameter trees?? All habitat is not created equal, if your not seeing deer in the area your in don't blame three DEC look at how the habitat has changed! Food plots won't help if the deer need to come thru open woods for a mile. They might come but it will be at night. If you can see 2oo yards. How far do you think a deer can see.?? Maybe if they are pushed/driven. But before blaming someone (dec, neighbor, tresspassers, coyotes, demorcats, republicans, ect) look at your habitat!!: deer are a factor of what a habitat can hold. just something to think about while your sitting in your stand asking yourself where have all the deer gone...

  26. Your shotgun must have a plug that limits it to 3 rounds when hunting waterfowl. The plug is not required for any other game. West Point is for active military personnel a only and their immediate family only if they are accompanied by their military kin. I haven't been there in a couple of years so I don't know of they've change the restrictions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free

  28. those are not your buddies if they did that too you, id call them out on it and never talk to them again. You can learn a lot about someone through hunting. If they will skrew you for a deer imagine what they would do if a little money was involved?!?!?!?!?!?

  29. I agree witht the above I don't think it is stealing from you. Since it is not your property (you didnt own it) then The farmer has that right to lease it out to someone else if he desired. for $3,500 ... I would regardless of whether or not you would be pissed. being its not your land why would you think it would be ok if you had the decision making powers over the property owner as to who can or cant use the land? it sounds like You have permission to have trespassers arrested, but not give out permission to use it to whom you choose. maybe you do tho I don't know, that's not how your thread read.. BUT, that being said the farmer sounds like a stand up guy and since you have a preexisting relationship with him then you are a lucky guy. Great bucks!! Id wanna get in there also!! P.S. Not trying to start an agreement but I thought I would just point out a few things from another perspective

  30. Sent this before I saw your latest post. Seems like he would rather have a reliable set of hands to help over a stack of cash. Bring a farmer myself, I can understand that.

  31. Sounds like you have a great deal in place with the land owner, but could you really blame him/her for being interested in $3,500? That probably barely covers 1 year worth of property/school taxes. Sounds like you guys treat the land with respect, which is probably why he didn't entertain the other offers. It wouldn't really be stealing, but rather stepping on your toes. If they are well aware that you hunt there, that's a crappy thing to do. You might want to make sure your stuff (stands & cams) are still there because they might be just as pissed as you! Btw, nice buck!

  32. With all of the financial problems our state has, I have always wondered why they have not implemented a selective logging program for state land. Can you imagine how much money is really there.. The state will give you a significant break on property taxes to put a good forestry plan in place on your property, but they don't do it themselves.. Makes no sense!

  34. Benelli M4 will depend on the options. Needs to hold 5 rounds or less, no flash suppressor or muzzle brake. Check your gun's configuration and compare it to the NY safe act regulations. Go to the DEC website to look for listing of state lands that allow hunting. You can go to Tuxedo, NY (Orange County) to hunt in Sterling Forest after applying for and getting a permit to hunt there. Opening weekend for deer is closed to anyone applying at this point - I waited 2 days to long to get a permit valid for opening weekend of gun deer season. That is about 1 hour from NYC. There is also Stewart State Forest near Newburgh (shotgun and bow only). If you get a 3P doe permit, you can apply for a permit for hunting in some zones in WestPoint (the Military Academy for the Army). Must harvest a doe first. In Putnam County you can try Canberry Mountain, The Great Swamp, or Bog Brook. If you have the equipment to camp you could also go to the Catskills or rent a room somewhere to give that a try - about 2 hours from NYC. NY is a single projectile state when it comes to deer, so for shotgun it is slugs only. If you have a shotgun with a slug barrel (rifled shotgun barrel), then you can use a Sabot round - gives you more range.

  35. They sure should do it here in NYS. Archery, ML and gun season. For gun season, make the damned hunter orange mandatory and THEN give us the extra 30 minutes on the front and back of the day. I guess for now I'm just damned thankful for getting rifle use in Ontario County...........................

  39. It's ok if people decide not to shoot 1.5 year olds. I have no problem with whatever people decide to do for their own personal goals. We also have people that believe that 2.5 year olds should not be shot. I support their individual choice. There are others that keep wanting to push the age limit even higher. As a personal goal, I can't fault them. I actually believe there are hunters that would just as soon not even shoot anything, and that personal view is also respected by me. But none of that is the same as mandating these goals for everyone. That's a whole different kettle of fish. That's the point where we have to get serious about real, tangible, and significant reasons to put that into law. Because whether we like it or not, there are some real reasons for not taking that choice out of the hunter's hands.

  40. Wasn't about ethics.. was about common sense. and should make even more sense now that he knows the outcome of leaving a deer overnight in that area. Either track at night or have your deer eaten by coyotes... if you don't like tracking at night, don't shoot the deer just before dark.. simple common sense... ethical or not.

  41. There are some decent state lands near the big city from what some of the guys on here hint towards, don't know if it's necessary to go to Albany. Ithaca region I know has good deer population, and state land near there is available.
