I just about replied on the first page but read through all the replies first. "Its not the Anti's we should be concerned with, its the one's that are indifferent that something like this could get to and cause damage." you sir have hit the nail squarely on the head! we know that trying to change the anti hunters mind is not going to happen while we certainly need to keep awareness of the anti hunters because like it or not the numbers between the anti's and hunters are growing closer together. We as hunters are aging, the recruitment of young and upcoming hunters to replace those of us that are aging is FAR less than it was even as recent as 20 years ago. When the anti's numbers exceed ours we as hunters will be in trouble! not you personally but hunters in general need to remember that fact, and not sure if we will see it our lifetime but I am quite sure my grandkids will certainly have an uphill battle on their hands to keeping the hunting future alive and well. now about your statement about the indifferent people,,, THIS is where a lot of hunters miss the boat entirely. during my short stint of living in new hampshire I was a huge opponent to the visible while transporting law they had there. basically it was when you were transporting a deer or bear it had to be visible outside the vehicle ( so you couldn't put it in the trunk and close the lid or in the bed of your truck and close the tailgate.) My biggest issue was not everyone is a hunter, you have 3 groups. anti's, hunters and those setting on the fence of not being a hunter nor an anti hunter but have them setting at a traffic light and pull up behind a vehicle and be staring at the bloody body cavity of a deer or bear and you might have them move over to the anti hunting side. When I was teaching hunter safety in NH. we talked about care of your animals you shot. I was pretty frank with people about my displeasure of public display of animals. I have been a hunter my whole life and fully understand and lived the meat pole years at camp, but unfortunately times have changed, while still in areas the outside poles are fine as they are not in general public view it irritates me to drive through town and see deer hanging in plain view of the road, Not that we have anything to hide but be respectful to the animal ( you did take its life afterall ) but more importantly be respectful to the public and more importantly don't ever forget about those folks that are setting on the fence. There is an old saying "actions speak louder than words" how we as individuals act and converse in the course of our hunting endeavors whether right or wrong reflects on ALL of our brother and sister hunters. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy unfortunately.5 points

Ok, forget that stupid caption. How about the picture itself? I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a few minutes to clean things up and make the picture just a bit more artistic and presentable. However, I do have to admit to having taken a few careless pictures over the years that weren't exactly posed in the most tasteful situation. My bad! But a major difference is that I do not publicly post those pictures and actually no one other than myself ever gets to see those pictures. As much as I may prize the kill, if the picture does not reflect that pride of accomplishment, it isn't worth showing.3 points
-
It doesn't have to reflect on ALL hunters to me. Simply the fact I "share the same woods" with some of these fools is enough to make me want to dissassociate myself from hunting some days. If someone is killing to make an internet joke of it, I take offence to the fact they can't respect an important aspect of hunting the majority of us take pretty seriously! It's been said here before..... some guys are just killers, and I couldn't agree with it more!3 points
-
Do you guys really feel it reflects on ALL hunters? I feel it only reflects upon the person that posted it. I agree the comment was a bit crass, and that really only reflects badly (to some) on the person that posted it.3 points

There was an armed guard in the school - but the libs ain't gonna like hearing that... http://www.ijreview.com/2013/12/102056-armed-school-guard-at-arapahoe-high-prevented-further-loss-of-life/ Matt Vespa | On 16, Dec 2013 Why did the tragic school shooting at Arapahoe High in Colorado only last 80 seconds? An armed guard was on the premises – and the only fatality from this horrific event was the gunman. As the Christian Science Monitor reported on December 14: As they investigate the latest school shooting in the United States – Friday at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo. – one thing is clear to law enforcement officials there: The presence of an armed deputy sheriff on regular duty at the school was the key factor in preventing more deaths and injuries. As soon as he heard the first of five gunshots, that officer and the two school administrators he was talking to raced toward the commotion shouting their presence and ordering students and staff to follow the school’s lock-down protocol. As a result, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said at a briefing Saturday afternoon, the heavily-armed shooter [Karl Pierson] realized he was about to be confronted by an armed officer, and he took his own life. Although it may seem like our society is becoming more violent, gun violence in America has dropped almost 40% since 1993, according to the Department of Justice. Sadly, school shootings will happen regardless of public policy. And the fact that schools are “gun-free” zones makes them easy targets for criminals seeking to inflict harm on innocent Americans. So, are armed guards the answer? It prevented further loss of life at Arapahoe High. Newtown adopted armed guards in their school district after Sandy Hook. Last January, a majority of Americans were comfortable with the idea – and that sentiment hasn’t changed.2 points

Not addressed to me but here is my answer.. Its not the Anti's we should be concerned with, its the one's that are indifferent that something like this could get to and cause damage. Anti's will not be swayed reguardless, though this type of thing will fuel them.2 points

You and me, Wooly. Then hunters wonder why no one wants to let us hunt on their land anymore and why hunters get a bad rap in general. They ought to look at themselves in the mirror once in a while for the answer.2 points

While the picture may not offend many hunters as we've all had our arms buried in deer guts, you need to think about how it reflects on hunting to NON-hunters, women, children, etc. That's why my pictures will never contain holes, blood, tongues hanging out, etc. Just common sense and consideration of non-hunters views/feelings.2 points

Bothers me that some guys think hunting is some kind of big joke. The pic is fine by me (although not my style), but the caption is a bit over the top.2 points

So 70 something days into the season I took my first deer of the year... Wow.. tough year.. saw nothing but young deer all year during legal hunting hours... Finally, this past Sunday, Deer #11 of the day came up and was a good one... 130 lb doe, shot at 45 yards, T/C Pro Hunter, 110 grains of Blackhorn 209, 250 grain bonded T/C shockwave... Spent the year trying to get my wife, son and friend deer... Got everyone deer, now it was my turn!!!!2 points

The only time I would quit is when I am too old to walk to my stand or blind. I will continue to hunt and mentor my son no matter what restrictions are in place. Hopefully my son will push me in my wheelchair or carry me to my blind.2 points

Congrats to everyone that was successful this 2013 deer season...Be it in downed deer...full filled goals or just great days a field....Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year PS.... late season guys/gals Good luck2 points

I'll hunt deer as long as I can still get out there and new regs won't stop that. I may be a bit more selective in the buck I take. I think a lot of hunters around here would still take more bucks than they are alloted. Thier daughters are wives would now have to get dressed up in some hunting cloths and make the trip to the check in station. No lol.2 points
-
Not sure there would ever be enough man power to have an ample amount of check stations throughout the entire season. which means that some hunters might have to travel long distances just to check in a deer... probably not practical for Hunters or the DEC.2 points
-
No won't make me quit. I'll just deal with it just like when anything else is forced upon you. But I have to say the weekend warriors spend a lot of money in those small upstate towns. You limit a person to one buck and get it early in bow, that may cancel a couple of trips and money spent.2 points
-
Most likely, the only thing that force me to quit is when I can't climb that stinking killer hill behind the house anymore. However, I believe the "one buck rule" would maybe drop out some hunters that are already looking for an excuse to quit. I don't think there are that many people that would actually be affected by that change. I also believe that the requirement to take your kill to a check station would be unenforceable. People that hunt their own land, and butcher their own deer, probably are not going to be too likely to hoist a deer up onto their car to drive a bunch of miles to a check station. The result? .... Even fewer deer being reported. Also, don't be looking for any instant resources being given to the DEC to man all the check-stations. That ain't happening.2 points

I hate to keep bringing this up, but there is a NY north of t he thruway. We do have a week early season before regular season. We share it with archery, and no one complains we ruin hunting for the elite bow guys. Try that south of the thruway and there will be a war with the archery guys. But I realize not many know about the above the thruway part of NY. Part of why the state is in the shape it is now.2 points

While I had been holding out for those yummy horns (and still am), I had never taken a deer with my CVA Optima. It's fitted with a nice Nikon 3to9, but I didn't really need it during this hunt. Had 7 deer (2 bb's and 5 doe) come in to feed on the apples as they have been all season. All season I've let them walk, hoping that just once one of the nice bucks I had on my cams would be in tow. I took the largest. She weighed in at 111 lbs. dressed, but looks bigger hanging. She will taste great. I have not shot a doe in over 5 years, and to see 2 of this year's drops (healthy size) come back and walk around the body was a little tough to watch. 10 yards in the heart. She went 20 yards stopped... i thought i missed. Stood there for 10 seconds, then took one bound and collapsed. I waited about an hour as the 2 deer I mentioned came back and then bedded down nearby. As I was gutting her they had come in even closer and were blowing at me. Maybe a reminder why I don't like shooting the moms2 points

Well, I was able to break in my new rifle yesterday morning on the last day of the regular gun season...12/08/13! I ended up taking an 11 Point Buck at 9:40 AM hounding after a doe!2 points

I won't quit until I can't physically do it anymore. Its part of who I am. When I was single one of the first things I would tell a woman is that I hunt every second I can during deer season. If she couldn't deal with it, then we would end it there. I will follow any law passed wether I like it or not. It comes down to doing what I have to to be able to hunt.1 point

I kind of hope that this was a 15 year old kid that posted this, because at least there is still hope for him1 point

I had a discussion with a business man one evening regarding hunting. At the end we agreed that it was not hunting, but it was the hunters that he objected to. I was told by a young woman that she'd rather a deer starve then be shot by a hunter, and if it wasn't for hunters she would not have had a job. The above was some time back, but our image today is worse. I have friends (Limbaugh conservatives) some who fish, but think hunters have no skill except to shoot a baited animal, or in a baited field(taught by tv).. I hear ore and more conservatives, not all from down here, are not in our corner and that is scarey for the future. We are losing ground rapidly. Recently a L.I. newspaper had a letter from a reader who wrote that hunters should be allowed to bait and shoot deer on L.I. I got his point, but it would appear to the public that we can't even shoot a backyard deer without help(BAIT). It'd be like shooting birds out of a bird feeder in my yard, which is how many will see it. We all know that anti hunters and anti gun people read our sites and then use our words to fight us. We don't read their sites, but they read ours. Having a pro hunter quote an anti is fine, but these people can point directly at our words and pictures and let the reader see it for themselves, rather then interpret. More antis are bird watching, apple picking, wildlife photographing, hiking, snowmobiling and otherwise using the woods. We are not the only ones supporting businesses in "hunting areas", and spending money on wildlife . So when I see a picture, on line, with that caption it just substantiates that we, often times, invite criticism. Hunters have lost, and are continuing to lose, the RESPECT that we deserve. I'm ranting because in the last year, since the gun control debates, I have seen more and more antis become vocal against hunters. And more and more people that were in our corner turn from us. I'll get to hunt until my end, but I'm not so sure about our future generations.1 point

When I find myself in a funk not seeing any deer I try to refocus myself on strictly on bedding areas. I ask myself "where are these deer bedding?" In woods that are loaded with thicket, this can be tough. Deer can bed anywhere. But in woods with small pockets of thicket, its much easier. My advice would be to scout a lot over the next 2 months and find the areas with good sign, better sign, and insane sign. Mark them on maps. Since it is pretty heavily hunted you may need to have several options should other hunters "spoil" some or most of them. Once you have your spots, consider access points taking wind into account. And buy a quality treestand for next season. Good luck.1 point

You can use a pistol in shotgun only areas in any caliber during deer. The rule says no rifles in shotgun only. Nothing about calibers1 point

There are bad apples in any bunch. Doesnt matter what segment of society we are talking about. I doubt the guy shot the deer JUST to make an internet joke with them. I think he just made a crass joke about the pic he took, trying to be funny.1 point

These pics arent going to affect the way an anti views hunters or hunting, and neither will a cleaned up picture of a dead deer.1 point

Gun-free zone shouldn't mean that a trained guard shouldn't have a gun. I don't think even many liberals are against having armed guards in schools. Arming teachers is a different story, however. Students shouldn't be taught by a teacher with a gun strapped to their hip, that is NOT what they are being paid to do. We'd then be NO better than Nazi Germany when their youth was being indoctrinated by armed SS officers. I for one don't want my kids growing up thinking that a gun is the solution to all problems, because it surely is not. Most won't agree here, but I really could care less.1 point

I also think you would have even more hunters cheating the system using other "peoples" backtab to tag a buck. That is a reality……...1 point

Plugs are impractical for many rifles. The 3 shot plug rule for tubular mag shotguns is very common..I'm required by law to plug my shotgun for turkeys and other small game in Pa, Ontario, Maine, Virginia and other states where I have hunted. Since I use the same guns for turkey hunting as I do for waterfowl, I just leave them plugged..No big deal either way for me.1 point

One buck fine but not if my wmu was Ar and if you shorten my seaseon then lower my license cost....better yet open up state parks to hunting that my license dues pay to keep maintained.... as far as 3 shots fine only need one ...1 point

Great late season buck DEZ. Looks like he was one number off from winning the lottery. lol I shot my first MZ deer on Sat. Decent doe and I was very happy to close out the season that way.1 point

I would still hunt.. I think it should only be 1 buck per year.... Shoot what you want though... If AR's were to go in, I don't think the people would be happy... Baby steps... 1 buck per year is a good start though...1 point

I'm with Lawdwaz on that Santa Baby one. It's right near the top of my least favorite. I'm partial to Bing's White Christmas. Pretty much any Christmas songs by Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Burl Ives and Frank Sinatra.1 point

Took a day from buck hunting to fill a DMP tag on the last day of regular season... nice two man hunt planned by my good friend... his smile was priceless as he approached me after the kill... " I love when a plan comes together" were his first words to me then a hand shake... first hunt of the day and some venison to share... the deer was just a bonus to a great time hunting with a close friend.1 point

From these articles it appears that even different regions in the East have varying amounts of wolf DNA in their respective coyote populations. In any event, we do not need wolves in NY! I was in the Adirondacks for 4 days last week. More than a few times I found running deer tracks with running coyote tracks following them.1 point
