Finally got one tag filled yesterday at 11:27 am. The toms have been henned up right off the roost in the morning so I decided to go out about 9:30. When I got to the field there was a hen already out there. So I snuck back into the hedgerow and set up. About 11 am I hear a faint gobble to the north in the next field. This guy an 3 other gobblers finally come into the field where I was. They were all fighting each other, feathers were flying everywhere. Then he came running down the edge of the hedgerow and I shot him at about 3 yards. He weighed 20 lbs. Had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk5 points

Actually there are many things to be "worried about". It is good not to get so focused on one thing that you lose track of all the others that are sneaking up on you. Regarding having a drinking water supply that does not poison you or cause a third arm to grow out of your head, it should be noted that we humans really do need a water supply that isn't lethal. That probably sits kind of high on the priority list of things to keep track of. It's certainly not an issue that should be dictated by financial concerns.4 points

I remember a quote from years ago if goes something like this. "I capitalist will sell you the rope to hang him with" Funny where money is concerned there is also denial of the facts, because its the money they want and no fact to the contraty will change their minds. Money justifies all !!!!!!3 points

By "stringent oversight", are you referring to the government regulations that you so vehemently oppose?2 points

Well if you're transporting illegal guns in your car I'd think you would not have any guns or accessories in plain view ,not break traffic laws and if you got stopped know that you don't have to answer questions about guns in the vehicle in NYS.If you're not going to comply and I support that wink wink then have the brains to think things through . I feel sorry for the kid but clearly he had know idea of his rights at a time he should have been overly cautious. There is no link from tags to permits in NYS and they have no right to count the rounds in your handgun in a traffic stop should you for some unknown reason tell the cop you have one. That case was already tossed out of court somewhere around Batavia if I remember correctly . Cop tried to say he could tell by the weight of the gun lol. Judge said nice try.....2 points

I was born & lived the first 8 years of my life in the "oil country" of N/W Pennsylvania. When the casings from oil wells drilled on the early 1900s started to rust out, methane gas would infiltrate the aquifer. That was happening by the mid '60s. Then, there was acid run-off from coal mines turning rural trout streams into lifeless drainage ditches W/red stained bottoms. By the mid '70s things were starting to improve due to EPA efforts. This "clean up" was mostly paid for by tax payers since the offending corporations were long gone. Do we really have to go through all this again?2 points

I guess I missed the racial connection too. But, the article does put an answer to those who ask the question about "Why are you all so afraid of a gun registration system?". Just like so much in the government, anytime the government inserts themselves into your life, you will find yourself on the short end of some bureaucrat's power assertion, and corruption and/or personal values will be forced on you. Oh, and by the way, for those that like to bad-mouth and whine about the NRA, you might note that they are the only organization that is standing behind those whose 2nd Amendment rights are being systematically violated by the Indiana state government. For these victims, the NRA is their last line of defense. It's just one of many un-publicized and unrecognized benefits of the NRA.2 points

I recently found an old hatchet head in my fathers storage shed. It has really bad patina with some rough pitting. I was able to make out the following "B.x Swift" as the makers mark. I can't find much via google on this hatchet head and was hoping someone would be able to tell me more about the item. I need a new hatchet and wanted to put some effort into a piece providing it was worthy. Thanks in advance!1 point

Well I don't know about everyone, but here in east-central NY, the turkeys have really been gobbling a lot the past few days. Today at the golf course where I work, two toms gobbled over 70 times each. Driving around and seeing less cars on the side of the roads but more turkeys out in the fields all fluffed up! I mentioned in a previous post about two weeks ago that the turkey breeding season had not kicked up yet due to the late winter, guess my theory may have been correct! Now I just gotta get a gobbler in the dirt, good luck to all and keep hunting, do not give up yet!1 point

Been lurking for a while and decided to post my introduction. Started hunting at 18, thanks to the guys at the deer shop I started working at when I was 17. Jumped in head first using all available funds for a new bow, shotgun, ammo, and lots of camo and gadgets. Since then I have managed to upgrade my equipment and learn more and more every year since. It all helped me this past season to get my biggest Buck yet. A nice 8 point at 40 yards opening morning of shotgun. Hunting is not the only passion I have. Since I was 6 I have been fishing mainly for bass in ponds and creeks in Monroe county and surrounding counties. Recently in the past few years I have got into trout and salmon fishing of all kinds. Weather it be spin fishing in Naples with a few friends every opening day and through the weekend or fly fishing a small creek called Oatka in Leroy all the way up to the Salmon river in Pulaski. Looking forward to learning more and sharing what i have come to learn with all of you.1 point

Just a thought as I had similar experience years back. My dash had lost a screw, shifted down a bit and it was pressing high on the gas petal where I couldn't see it . I braked and it would accelerate again as corner of dash was still pressing on it.1 point

well, I have no dog in this fight, but can see both sides of the argument..........I can't imagine how pumping chemicals into the ground and disrupting what lies beneath can't at some point create problems....on the other hand, I can understand how some want to create jobs to save the economy of their dying towns...but, I also would think that the larger amount of money being made would go to people who don't live in those towns but live elsewhere..I know plenty of people looking to cash in on natural gas wells and wind turbines who would put zero money into the local economy.1 point

Gun owners in New York are refusing to register their guns, where the non-compliance rate may be as high as 99 percent! http://bearingarms.com/gun-rights-group-wins-access-potentially-embarrassing-ny-gun-registration-data/1 point

In months and years that followed, the Pennsylvania state Department of Environmental Protection found that methane was seeping from nearby gas wells drilled by Cabot Oil and Gas into water wells in the area where Fiorentino lived. Cabot responded that methane comes from the ground and factors other than drilling can bring it into contact with water supplies. Cabot denied that its operations caused the problem, and at one point accused the DEP of fabricating the story. The events in Dimock highlighted a battle over whether fracking was good or bad. At the heart of it was the issue of trust, and who could be believed — industry, government, or neither. The industry, at the time, was standing by a claim that fracking had not contaminated a single water well throughout its history. This motivated journalists, critics, and activists who sensed a bending of the facts and possibly a cover up. After Fiorentino's well exploded, Walter Hang, head of an environmental research firm in Ithaca, began searching data bases from the DEC to see if he could find records of similar incidents in New York State. He uncovered 270 files documenting waste-water spills, well contamination, explosions, methane migration and ecological damage related to gas production in the state since 1979. Those findings were the subject of an article in this newspaper on Nov. 8, 2009. Continuing his research in 2010, Hang uncovered documents that showed William T. Boria, a water resources specialist at the Chautauqua County Health Department, reported his agency had received more than 140 complaints related to water pollution or gas migration associated with nearby drilling operations. In a 2004 memo summarizing the issue, Boria stated: "Those complaints that were recorded are probably just a fraction of the actual problems that occurred." County health officials tabulated information on 53 of the cases from 1983 to 2008 on a spreadsheet, including one where a home was evacuated after the water well exploded.1 point

I look at it this way. . ..Is everyone that could be negatively effected well compensated for their risk? However small it may be... Once an accident happens, there are no take backs... And it is basically a 100% certainty that one will occur given enough time..... If I was the landowner looking to make a fortune off fracking rights I would be poed.. If , like me I had a small piece of property with a nice stream and springs that I planned on passing down to the next generation I am pleased...1 point

I didn't look too deeply into it, but pretty sure this it the charge for failing to register..........but like I said, I didn't dig too deep so may be wrong. 265.01-b Criminal possession of a firearm. A person is guilty of criminal possession of a firearm when he or she: (1) possesses any firearm or; (2) lawfully possesses a firearm prior to the effective date of the chapter of the laws of two thousand thirteen which added this section subject to the registration requirements of subdivision sixteen-a of section 400.00 of this chapter and knowingly fails to register such firearm pursuant to such subdivision. Criminal possession of a firearm is a class E felony.1 point

Don't think I'd want explosive methane coming through my water lines into my house....I was evacuated in Avon because some nimrod poured gasoline into the sewer lines...and a families house a block over and half a mile from the pour, blew up.. here's another of many links I could post for you... http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/10/02/fracking-radioactive-water-pennsylvania/2904829/1 point

...and .1 percent right now is better than zero. don't know what the situation is around you, but I'm assuming it's bad. You've got two obvious options, complain as you are with a poor attitude or accept it and do something about it.1 point

No, we just trash regulation that has a cost too high to pay. Like the looming EPA regulations with their "carbon tax" which will take money out of every American's pocket, destroy many jobs in various industries, with no evidence at all it will have any positive effect on the environment. It seems to lend credence to the argument this administration is really trying to fundamentally change America into a third world economy.1 point

Oh I know I know. But in an ideal situation they should work for everyone. That we let it get away from that is the shame of our American short attention span and apathy toward voting. Letting the companies you're suppose to regulate write the regulations is wrong and happens every day. I too hate "nanny state" regulation but the nature man dictates strong regulations on natural resource use since it has been proven that companies that exploit those resources will do so in the cheapest and most harmful way. Many here know that the agri-laws written favor big agri-companies but again nothing gets done about it. So do we trash all regulation?1 point

You need to do a little more research on this.;-) Government regulation is how non-competitive businesses are able to stay in the market. Big Pharma, Big Agriculture, Big Oil, Big Tobacco, Big Auto... They're not where they are because of their work-product, but because they've helped to configure a governmental system that eliminates the competition. It's no longer possible to be Big anything without first making Big Government happy. As far as any safety concerns: Every single day people die in spite of government regulation and oversight of the things we do as humans. Looking to the government for protection is little more than an abdication of personal care.1 point

Tf- I saw a show on the pursuit channel that advertised these during a live hunt. The guy took a jake with a bow at about 7 yards. I call bs still on the concept that thier product is based on. I like the structural integrity of the clothing but to me its just another set of expensive camo.1 point

I saw an article recently that Fish & Wildlife caught, tranquilized and released 736 pound NJ Black bear in northern NJ. I believe it was the biggest one ever tagged and released. Here's a video and story about the current state record black bear that was mounted and donated to the state museum for display. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2014/03/record_new_jersey_bear_unveiled_at_pequest_trout_hatchery_open_house.html1 point
