My son brought his 20 gauge Remington 11-48 to the NY place today. I set this up for him about 15 years ago. It has a smooth bore but will group within 3" at 50 yards and 6" at 100 yards. That's using full size Remington slugs no less. I want him to try some of the Tru-Ball slugs. Where he hunts, they stalk or still hunt and shots are usually closer than 50 yards. He doesn't even want to put a sling on it. It has a wood stock and forearm that is painted flat black. He's not into camo on his guns. It has Williams adjustable Fire Sights on the rib that glow in the daylight. What is custom, and really effective at reducing muzzle jump, especially when shooting at a running deer, is that brake on the barrel. It came off a Thompson Sub Machine Gun! The barrel was originally full choke. It also has a very nice trigger that breaks clean at 4.5 lbs. This gun is 60 years old and still shoots well without issues. It's the old long recoil operating system, where the entire barrel recoils rearward to eject the empty case. Remington made great guns back in the day and if you took care of them, they could be handed down through the generations. I bought it used, and it's nothing special, other than it's killed a lot of deer. I hope my son will be able to hand it down to his child someday too.3 points

Opening day I use my dad's hand me down rem 788 in .308. It's a sentimental thing even though my dad is still hunting with me. After that it's either my tc impact or my 336 in 30-30 open sights.2 points

I allways thought a standard fine duplex gave as fine an aiming point as needed. I have three Leupold vx3a all with the same, from 8mm mauser to .308, 3oo win mag to 45-70. (oops , 4, three 1.5x 5, one 2x7). I don't understand the dot or range finder dots, etc....I was taught to shoot your gun and know where it hits, anything more takes too much thinkin. My max. range shooting is 200 yards, normally sight in for 100 dead on.2 points

Hunted my first 2-3 years with my uncles marlin .35 but Been using my browning a bolt II 30-06 for about 13 years. I just won a Ruger American .308, looks like a nice gun so I may give it a shot this year. I'm a little nervous though because I'm so used to and comfortable with the trigger on my browning. I haven't gotten a chance at a big buck yet, feel like I'd want what I'm most comfortable with if he ever does pass by me during gun season. We'll see...1 point

During gun you can carry a gun and a bow, but can't carry a gun during archery.1 point

As far as I know, you can take as many rifles as you would like as long as they are legal to hunt deer with.1 point

Yep, 7 day forecasts are garbage..even 2 or three days out is unreliable. Some of these rookies on TV weather are pathetic. I remember the days of the family of 7 piling into the station wagon and heading out to our relatives farm in wyoming county on winter days. Of course, my parents watched/ listened to the reports on radio or TV. If any if snow was predicted, we took our time and got there and returned just fine. Nowadays, the gloom and doom forecasting, trying to strike fear into people is ridiculous. I will pay heed to Scoutlook, or intellicast for info on weather. All the happy talk on TV "Snooze" is crepe too....I leave the room to do something else when my wife sits down to watch...would rather have pitchfork in my forehead that watch that stuff. Bring back Tom Jolles..1 point

I agree with you Doc...but we did get that rain and it was pretty heavy,,,There was road ponding and the local towns culvert pipes couldn't handle it,,,Then again if they cleaned them once in a blue moon they could have I suppose..any whoo...yep having to make weather plans is the pits...not just for farmers but construction ..roofers pouring concrete, framers ect ect... As Mr B says ...must be nice to have a job making that much money and you rarely need to be right...1 point

Simply put the state land I hunt has very few deer. Population control in these area's is not needed. Yet the area's that do need it are usually hard to get access to causing basically NO hunting in the area with high populations. As more hunters pound the state lands these deer find sanctuary in these residential areas. You want population control. This is what is needed. 1)Stop making us get signed waivers to hunt in residential areas. If the home owner allows us in we should not need to get permision from every other house in the area. 2)Stop preventing us from shooting MORE deer. It does not matter if they are a buck. Bucks cause as much damage if not more than doe. I understand they can not reproduce yet they can still cause car accidents, plant damage and are part of the population issue. 3)Get the earn a tag system back in place, give us more reasons to get into the woods by giving out extra buck tags for every 2-3 doe shot. This will get us hunters to participate more in culling the population and added incetive to take more doe. Otherwise keep experimenting and see the results of diminished hunters in the field.1 point

I am using them, I had an issue with the blue ones not working out of the pack but never with green or red. I switched to a 125 grain broadheads to offset the weight and my arrows are hitting bullseyes at 40 yards.( nocturnal, nap thunderhead, victory 350 spine arrow)1 point

It all just shows you how dedicated, focused, and creative these anti-hunting whackos are. They will use every trick in the book and are constantly coming at us with everything they've got. We on the other hand simply argue amongst ourselves, fail to support our own advocacy organizations, and continue to under-estimate the effectiveness of these kinds of tactics.1 point

Ants.....I think have the "Hawk" part right.... I do believe that Remington made a birch stock, dull finish no frills model called the "Mohawk" that was mechanically the same as the 11-48... Or rather as the 48 which was simply a 3 shot version of the 5 shot 11-48..1 point

First a little back story. Last fall my 80 year old dad had the opportunity to kill his second biggest buck ever in a large snow storm. Afterwards we talked about how to preserve the memory and I volunteered to try a euro mount. After several months of research on here and on the web, I finally got it done. It was really special to do this for my dad. I got the plaque from Springbrook Laser Engraving www.springbrooklaser.com. They are super nice people to work with. Here is dad after he shot the buck After we got him home Here is the plaque when it arrived. Here is the finished mount with the skull attached. Here is the three of us presenting dad with his trophy.1 point

So, who am I going to give permission to hunt my property? The smart a$$ with an attitude who thinks he is entitled because he is all that and more. Or The guy who shows up at my place with a hearty hand shake and warm smile, looking for a place to hunt with his kid, who is not afraid of work? Hmmmmm.............1 point

Im thinking they just dont know what to do, because their low hanging fruit strategy of flooding the areas with tags didnt work. They dont seem to care to listen to what people want, or look around at other states and take examples of good programs that work. They are completely blind to the fact that hunter satisfaction is going to make or break their "management plan". They need hunters to buy into the plan and carry it out. Thats not gonna work so well when they piss a large portion of hunters off, and make the hunters less willing to work with them. This is what we get when politicians are running the show. We need a real wildlife management department in this state, thats run by qualified individuals.1 point

Id rather see part of gun season as doe only if they need to kill off does. It would make more sense than bow season. Ill continue to hunt the way I hunt, starting October 16th.1 point

So what are you saying.... the guys that put all this effort forth durring those times don't put any effort into finding funnels to hunt at one of the most productive times of the season in the chase phase? That doesn't make much sense that a "trophy buck" kill in a funnel should be considered any less of an accomplishment than one that was killed in a bean field, or an oak flat, or a well used trail. I swear some days I can't believe some of the things I read here,lol1 point

Basically the DEC stated they were going to stick to their original 2012-2016 Whitetail Mgmt Plan. Regardless of all the controversy caused by their early bow & ML doe only proposed legislations. Also referenced the Cornell survey, you know where only ~2500 individuals responded to it!??! As growalot mentioned, they literally dismissed the earn-a-buck concept. Next step would be to have a portion of the regular season, doe only. That is if bow & ML hunters did NOT reduce the population sufficiently. The DEC is acting like the spoiled kid that owns the bat & ball. It'll be my way or no way! FUBAR! Politics at its' worst & at our expense! So, to play that game, get all the DMPs you can, fill them out as harvests & report them, regardless if you actually kill any. Not like the DEC actually knows how many deer are really out there anyways.1 point

This is a bit of an exaggeration in my opinion. Lots of other things come into play when people interact. Yes, being polite and respectful will never hurt, but you have someone come into a job interview who is all "Yes sir" and "Thank you, Mam" with mediocre skills, experience and school grades, he will most likely NOT get the job over someone who is just so-so in the politeness category, yet has great skills, experience and school grades. The person who is totally obnoxious may not stand a chance either, but having impeccable manners won't get you far if there is little else backing you up. Not having perfect manners doesn't automatically make someone rude, lazy or entitled either. Lots of obnoxious folks have become quite successful in this world. And this goes back decades and centuries, not something that has only happened in the last 20 years. Also tell me that a sexy looking girl won't have an advantage over one that has these impeccable manners, yet looks like Rosie O'Donell? It will be NO contest.1 point

When they ask him about the rutting moon he goes into it in detail. Ultimately you have to be in the right place at the right time. Why are funnels the best? Because they re likely to travel them. Hot does, wind, a gazillion variables can hurt you but a buck, especially a mature one, will travel in cover. Despite what Alsheimer and other deer "experts" say- peak conception is about the same time each year. Some may come in during sept or dec but the 9-12 seems to be the "lockdown" time .... The more does the more subdued... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

I have always aimed to be in the stand about 1/2 hour before sunrise on opening day of gun, the first Saturday, and Thanksgiving (the "big 3" in our area). Other days and archery & ML seasons, I usually wait until legal light prior to walking in. I have spent most of the last 30 opening days of gun season on our farm in the southern zone, which has been in the family since just after the Civil war. I have killed about 15 deer on those days and more than half were from 1 to 10 minutes after legal shooting light and shot from a stand. I always check the times in the paper and do not load my gun prior to sunrise and I also unload it prior to sunset. I will never forget my first and fastest (the 1 minute buck). That was also the shortest season I ever had. It was my third year hunting and I was just 19 years old. I chewed tobacco back then and I could see in the moonlight that the brown spot I was trying to spit on in the snow below my stand was getting larger as the seconds ticked away. With about 2 minutes to go, I heard what sounded like clumsy person struggling thru the brush next to me, on the neighbors land. I kept looking back and forth between my watch and the spot the noise was coming from as I held a 16 ga slug in my right hand. Suddenly a feisty looking buck with a couple busted off tines, and 7 remaining points, stepped out of the brush right below my stand. I had seen this same buck several times during archery season but never in range. He buried his nose in the tobacco spot as his last minute ticked away. I prayed that the slug would find its way into the chamber, as I shoved it in and cycled the pump on my granddad's old bottom-loading, Ithaca model 37. Then I centered the crosshairs of the old 1.5X Weaver scope on the top of his shoulder and was relieved to hear the bang and feel the heavy recoil of the "featherweight" gun against my shoulder. The buck went into a spastic "break dance" and flopped around at the base of my tree for several minutes before laying still. I gutted him quick, hung him in the garage and made it to college in time to take an exam (not sure how I did on that one, but I did pass the class). Our neighbors don't have any clear lanes on their land so they usually follow our adjacent lane on their way into the woods, just after first light. Most of the rest of my opening morning kills were pushed to me by them at this time. I am glad some folks wait until daylight on the "big-days", as we would go hungry some years otherwise. My first buck came in the first minute of an opening day and my largest-racked, symmetric, "typical" came on the last just a few years ago. I never would have taken that one had I not climbed down from my stand 3 minutes prior to legal sunset. The only reason I did that was because the Bible I was reading at the time slipped mysteriously from my hands, falling to the forest floor below. I had filled a doe tag in the morning (thank you next door neighbor) and a freind had given me another so I had no real need to hunt until the last minute. Our meat supply was good. As soon as I got to the ground with the same loaded 16 ga Ithaca in my right hand (sorry about the "safety" issue but it paid off this time), and reaching for the Bible with my left, a flock of turkeys landed almost on top of me. As is often the case around here, they were accompanied by a deer. The turkeys like to hang with the deer to capitalize on their good sense of smell, and the deer appreciate the turkey's superior eyesight. Combined, they have a nearly impregnable defense against a hunter clad in blaze-orange. This wise old buck's line of turkeys was breeched now however, and his big rack and head popped out from behind a bush just 10 yards away. I brought up the gun, centered the older, 1.5X Weaver scope on his neck and put him down in his tracks, with just a few seconds of legal light remaining. As I have just explained here, I have pushed it close to the limit at least twice, but in thirty years, I have never been tempted by a shot prior to or after legal sunrise or sunset. I also have no respect for those who call them selves hunters yet think nothing of shooting way before or after the legal times. They are "poachers" in my book and there certainly is no shortage of them in these parts based on the shots I hear in the dark.1 point

1st two weeks doe only will throw it all into a tail wind. Bucks will breed only at night and sit tight during the day. They will know something is up when their lady friends are being targeted for abuse. They won't come out to defend but just will sit there and watch the slaughter from the thicket. But…….when we are done with our duty as conservationist to cull the herd they will come out…….seeking and searching for the leftovers, even a yearling will do. There won't be much left so bucks might just retire with the old-timers on the porch and talk about how it was back in the day….Happy hunting!1 point
-
I must say that even though the doe only doesn't affect the areas I hunt... the DEC pulled this one out of left field somewhere... no explanation, no justification, no rhyme or reason, not even any input taken from hunters... they basically blind sided everyone... that doesn't make a lot of sense no matter if it affects you or not... a poor decision in my opinion. Well, unless their objective was to piss off a lot of hunters.1 point
