You did well grasshopper....lol Rather than drop a dime or snitch on a salt lick you did just what most normal people would have done. Myself, I would have attached a signed little note just to inform him who the nice guy was that didnt call the law for the destruction and did not own a new stand but now, after you made the first nice gesture....The next time would result in a little different mindset. I do have to say that either this guy thinks he can hunt this land and has the ok to do whatever he wants or he is really brazen. Probably not much of a hunter with the wheeler trail to the stand.5 points

I don't know if you own land and actually do not care. That said, if you had to put up with the absolute crap that many here have had to...while paying high taxes and some mortgages I would have to think you'd tone that statement down. It's not tattle tailing (what a high school statement) and when dirty bags ...yes scummy dirt bags do things like trespass and steal and poach ect..ect ...ect...they will only continue to do so and worse, over time if not stopped. It may not be for you but don't look down your nose at others for doing what is RIGHT!4 points

Well, bowhunter shooting experts always tell you to "pick a spot to aim at". Well, these little guys make it easy to do that.4 points

I've shot a few with spots still visible, usually along the back ridgeline, well into Oct. They are pretty good table fare.3 points

If you can afford a Kimber you have lots of options... My Remington 700 Mountain Rifle ( 7mm08) is a handy, reliable and accurate rifle...It has been my main whitetail rifle for a number of years now.. I suggest that you visit a gunshop with a good selection of rifles and handle a few to see what trips your trigger...There are some good deals to be had on good quality used rifles out there too..3 points

The size of the pattern is a function of the choke, which is the amount of constriction below cylinder bore of any given gauge...Of course there is variation from gun to gun, , but in theory at any given distance, say 30 yards, a shotgun of any given choke whether it be .410, 28, 20, 16, 12 or 10 should throw a pattern of appx. the same diameter...So say we have 6 guns of the above gauges all modified ( or whatever) choke...they should all throw a pattern say 36 inches in diameter... The larger bores, because they throw a HEAVIER shot charge, ( IE more pellets of equal size) will place MORE pellets on target..That's the only real advantage...More pellets on target means more shot striking the target and effectiveness at longer range..Powder charges have little to do with pattern density or size ...At shotgun velocities, from 1100 fps to 1400 fps, VELOCITY has little to do with it...It's all about having more shot in the pattern at any given range..3 points

Spent Yesterday back down at the farm. Trimmed out paths to all stands at one farm. Went over to the other farm and scouted out a spot for a new double set. We looked at two areas we thought might be good, but turned out not to be, so we headed up to the North end of the property, near the area that I had an encounter with one of the really big boys on the farm last season. I already have a stand up near there, but there was an area about 100 yards from that stand where I had placed a cam this year that was showing some really good pics, and I thought there might be a spot where we could get in there with a set. As soon as we pulled into the area, up jumped a nice buck. He had some mass on him and was out past his ears with a good size body. I figured from the quick look that he is at least 3, possibly older, but Id need a better look at him. He popped right out of a spot of heavy cover that I know the bucks tend to lay up in. We started looking around and I found a nice looking Hickory, that is surrounded by 5 smaller trees for good cover and breakup, so thats where we hung our set. I can see into part of the bedding area, and cut 4 lanes, 1 into thicker cover, 1 to a known travel corridor and two into the field on either side of the point of trees. Should be a great set. Next we went around and checked the plots, all are doing great. First heres the Rape, PTT, Sugar beet plot... The DeerAg plot... After we left, I went over to a friends house and ended up making a deal on a new trailer thats heavy duty enough to haul mid size tractors and other equipment. It was a pretty fun weekend, and now Im back to work. No Labor Day vaca for this guy...3 points

Well not your land..but had it been mine...I'd be a tad crazed over the rock wall ,but over the edge on any tree/sapling cutting...so the stand would have come home with me...after I put up a note with my cell number...that he could have gotten off any of my posted signs...saying I have the ladder and he can call so we can exchange his funds for the damage to my property for his tree stand...that I had contacted the police and informed them of the situation...2 points

I'm not talking about the merits, I'm saying the DEC has already gone on record that they will not implement changes to the way they dole out tags. It's more of the shove it and take it message they cast.2 points

The 10 gauge doesn't have any real ballistic advantage over the 3.5 12 gauge because the shot charges are essentially the same.. I haven't studied the stats lately, but last I knew the 10 gauge mag load was 2 1/4 Oz. of shot, same as the 3.5" 12... 10 gauge repeaters are HEAVY...If I owned one I'd have to hire someone to carry it around for me.. I know several guys who have owned them and ALL of them sold them because they were too damned heavy, the ammo cost too much, and they weren't much more effective than a 3" 12 gauge... Since the development of the 3.5" 12 gauge, the 10 gauge has become a dinosaur...2 points

Oh, well thats the same way you use a regular safety strap, I dont really see the point of a prusik. I put prusiks on my hang on sets, the rope stays there and the knot is moved up and down the line as I go up and down. Its attached to the tree at the top and bottom.2 points

yeah, the heck with trying to be a neighbor....just call the cops before you try anything else.2 points

The DEC has apparently decided that bowhunters are now charged with the responsibility of managing the herd size but, it is not necessary to do so when gun hunting. So apparently in their mind it does make a difference whether you do it in bow season or gun season.....lol. Don't bother trying to make any sense out of it .... apparently the DEC isn't burdened with logic.2 points

This weekend I cooked up the last of the fawn backstrap from last year. I shot her in mid or late November last year. Man, was that sucker tasty and tender, even after being frozen for almost a year. Mmmmm mmmmmm!2 points

Yes- and I was not the only one.A little different here where I hunt. I also don't believe in the "snitches get stitches" gangster, outlaw mentality. If the violators planned retribution or revenge?........well....may god have mercy on their soul.2 points

Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year.2 points

Just curious how many have seen fawns that still have their spots durring bow season. I got a trail cam pic of one once since we went to the Oct 1'st opener but have never seen one durring season other than that. I did snap this pic two days ago, and was thinking the little one might retain a few spots into early archery season.1 point

I am sure I am the only person in NY. That has a steyr 8+56 mm. But just in case someone is looking to reload for one I found accompany that makes .329 dia. Bullets . You can pm me. I don't think you will find any at your local wal-mart.1 point

The .410 also has very few pellets in it's 3" case when you are using #4 shot, or even #6 shot. To kill turkey with a .410, they have to be close, like 25 yards or less, just to keep pattern density acceptable. Maybe he's using slugs?1 point

Thats a good deal. I found one at Dicks last year, well after the season. It was marked down to $64.99 from $129.99. In fact I just got done putting it together and painting it, a few minutes ago.1 point

X-bolt. I currently have two, a stainless stalker and a Maple Medallion. Both are amazing rifles. Looking at the new High Grade Hunter model next. I've also got a Model 70 stainless featherweight that is an amazing rifle with the smoothest action of any rifle I have ever owned, but the ergonomics and feel of the X-bolt can't be beaten IMO. Truth is, most of the modern bolt action rifles are good guns and most are very accurate these days. Find a shop that has a good selection and see what fits you best or what catches your eye.1 point

Take a read around THIS site and see how many hunters that have been at the game for quite a while don't know every game law. You would be surprised how many laws ARE NOT in the reference book they hand out with the licenses. A new neighbor gets the courtesy of a conversation.1 point

The problem with this whole thing is people seem to only shoot what they will use for many that 1 deer, usually preferably a buck, Until there is an easy way to, and hunters mentality changes to kill and donate doe to food banks ,ect you can add all the tags you want it won't increase the take unless you can recruin more hunters ( enter the x bow ,and early muzzleloader )1 point

Phade, but those are archery only areas and access in 8C is probably the worst in all of region 8. I would like to see the OBR. I would also like ALL antlerless to be handled in the lottery system with all weapons having an equal opportunity at the permits. Run this bonus program through all the seasons and not just in archery for the high population areas.1 point

I guess we need to start counting on the muzzleloader season in archery, eh?1 point

I had a Catt. Co. sheriff post not one, but several photos of some nice velvet bucks hitting a trophy rock to my FB trail cam page. The he proudly proclaims them to be taken in Catt. Co. If that doesn't give scope to the weight of mineral licks, I don't know what does. Agreed on the stupid move of trying to kill the apple tree. I've had the "luxury" of experiencing hunting over bait/licks, and running dogs, and hunting over or around food plots in my hunting "career" so far. Being in a supposed over-population situation in parts of NY, this fear of point-source attraction seems outweighed by the dire straits that required adding antlerless only seasons.1 point

Why bother with a salt lick under an apple tree ? I'd be happy using the apple tree as an attractant.1 point

We as hunters have the opportunity to express our opinions, but what happens is based on more than just us. Unfortunately the DEC is driven by politics, and not biologists and wildlife management focused people. Until that happens, we are at the whim of groups that speak the loudest, and not always those that speak for the best interests of everyone. Carrying capacity needs to take the primary role in management decisions, some areas are just not capable of holding large numbers of deer. After that, hunter satisfaction, landowner needs and issues, etc come into play. Most changes that need to be made to improve hunting and herd health in alot of areas are going to make someone mad, the DEC should be making changes that are effective, take the least amount away from everyone today, and have a positive effect for everyone in the long run.1 point

Talk to him first . I'd tell him I saw the salt lick and what's up with that ? we don't hunt like that around here, and it's so close to my property I could get in trouble by hunting to close to it . I hope it's just out by your camera for pics ( giving him an out) . Then keep a close eye on him. If your first move is to call the cops well expect the same when your kid drives to fast down the street , or you play your music a bit loud, build a shed or pool deck without a permit, you dog barks, grass is to high , camper is parked to long in your yard, maybe you like to have a camp fire some nights hope it meets all the code requirements because he'll be calling .even if you're right in everything you do he'll still call and the cops / code enforcement will respond. We have friends who's neighbor called on them dozens of time. When they cut the grass he'd call the Sheriff because the clippings crossed the property line...... Talk to him, watch him , you'll know after a season how he rolls.1 point

I would leave the stand where it is since you had success there last year. If the property is large enough you may want to think about putting up a second stand in another area as a back up. As far as the rut goes, there could be an estrus doe around at anytime in November so be prepared for anything and sit all day if you can.1 point
