  1. You did well grasshopper....lol Rather than drop a dime or snitch on a salt lick you did just what most normal people would have done. Myself, I would have attached a signed little note just to inform him who the nice guy was that didnt call the law for the destruction and did not own a new stand but now, after you made the first nice gesture....The next time would result in a little different mindset. I do have to say that either this guy thinks he can hunt this land and has the ok to do whatever he wants or he is really brazen. Probably not much of a hunter with the wheeler trail to the stand.

  3. I don't know if you own land and actually do not care. That said, if you had to put up with the absolute crap that many here have had to...while paying high taxes and some mortgages I would have to think you'd tone that statement down. It's not tattle tailing (what a high school statement) and when dirty bags ...yes scummy dirt bags do things like trespass and steal and poach ect..ect ...ect...they will only continue to do so and worse, over time if not stopped. It may not be for you but don't look down your nose at others for doing what is RIGHT!

  4. Well, bowhunter shooting experts always tell you to "pick a spot to aim at". Well, these little guys make it easy to do that.

  5. I've shot a few with spots still visible, usually along the back ridgeline, well into Oct. They are pretty good table fare.

  6. If you can afford a Kimber you have lots of options... My Remington 700 Mountain Rifle ( 7mm08) is a handy, reliable and accurate rifle...It has been my main whitetail rifle for a number of years now.. I suggest that you visit a gunshop with a good selection of rifles and handle a few to see what trips your trigger...There are some good deals to be had on good quality used rifles out there too..

  7. The size of the pattern is a function of the choke, which is the amount of constriction below cylinder bore of any given gauge...Of course there is variation from gun to gun, , but in theory at any given distance, say 30 yards, a shotgun of any given choke whether it be .410, 28, 20, 16, 12 or 10 should throw a pattern of appx. the same diameter...So say we have 6 guns of the above gauges all modified ( or whatever) choke...they should all throw a pattern say 36 inches in diameter... The larger bores, because they throw a HEAVIER shot charge, ( IE more pellets of equal size) will place MORE pellets on target..That's the only real advantage...More pellets on target means more shot striking the target and effectiveness at longer range..Powder charges have little to do with pattern density or size ...At shotgun velocities, from 1100 fps to 1400 fps, VELOCITY has little to do with it...It's all about having more shot in the pattern at any given range..

  8. Spent Yesterday back down at the farm. Trimmed out paths to all stands at one farm. Went over to the other farm and scouted out a spot for a new double set. We looked at two areas we thought might be good, but turned out not to be, so we headed up to the North end of the property, near the area that I had an encounter with one of the really big boys on the farm last season. I already have a stand up near there, but there was an area about 100 yards from that stand where I had placed a cam this year that was showing some really good pics, and I thought there might be a spot where we could get in there with a set. As soon as we pulled into the area, up jumped a nice buck. He had some mass on him and was out past his ears with a good size body. I figured from the quick look that he is at least 3, possibly older, but Id need a better look at him. He popped right out of a spot of heavy cover that I know the bucks tend to lay up in. We started looking around and I found a nice looking Hickory, that is surrounded by 5 smaller trees for good cover and breakup, so thats where we hung our set. I can see into part of the bedding area, and cut 4 lanes, 1 into thicker cover, 1 to a known travel corridor and two into the field on either side of the point of trees. Should be a great set. Next we went around and checked the plots, all are doing great. First heres the Rape, PTT, Sugar beet plot... The DeerAg plot... After we left, I went over to a friends house and ended up making a deal on a new trailer thats heavy duty enough to haul mid size tractors and other equipment. It was a pretty fun weekend, and now Im back to work. No Labor Day vaca for this guy...

  9. Well not your land..but had it been mine...I'd be a tad crazed over the rock wall ,but over the edge on any tree/sapling cutting...so the stand would have come home with me...after I put up a note with my cell number...that he could have gotten off any of my posted signs...saying I have the ladder and he can call so we can exchange his funds for the damage to my property for his tree stand...that I had contacted the police and informed them of the situation...

  11. I'm not talking about the merits, I'm saying the DEC has already gone on record that they will not implement changes to the way they dole out tags. It's more of the shove it and take it message they cast.

  12. The 10 gauge doesn't have any real ballistic advantage over the 3.5 12 gauge because the shot charges are essentially the same.. I haven't studied the stats lately, but last I knew the 10 gauge mag load was 2 1/4 Oz. of shot, same as the 3.5" 12... 10 gauge repeaters are HEAVY...If I owned one I'd have to hire someone to carry it around for me.. I know several guys who have owned them and ALL of them sold them because they were too damned heavy, the ammo cost too much, and they weren't much more effective than a 3" 12 gauge... Since the development of the 3.5" 12 gauge, the 10 gauge has become a dinosaur...

  14. Oh, well thats the same way you use a regular safety strap, I dont really see the point of a prusik. I put prusiks on my hang on sets, the rope stays there and the knot is moved up and down the line as I go up and down. Its attached to the tree at the top and bottom.

  16. The DEC has apparently decided that bowhunters are now charged with the responsibility of managing the herd size but, it is not necessary to do so when gun hunting. So apparently in their mind it does make a difference whether you do it in bow season or gun season.....lol. Don't bother trying to make any sense out of it .... apparently the DEC isn't burdened with logic.

  21. Headed down to the farm this morning loaded up with 3 stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks and all of the goodies to go along with them. Once we got down there, we came up with the game plan. Add a second stand to a set we call the Poison Ivy Stand and swap the screw in steps for ladder sticks, Pull a stand out that we call the Junk Pile stand, check things with other stands, clean up lanes and start looking for a new place for a stand we call the corner stand. That stand and the Junk Pile Stand both sat at different points on an inside corner of a field. Its a hot bed of activity right now, and through hunting season when the field is in corn, but this year its beans. The area dies off a bit after the beans are cut, but is still a funnel type area for the deer. Neither of the two stands are in quite the optimal spot, and they are about 130 yards apart. We figure we can pull one and put the other in the ideal spot for the funnel, so thats what we will do. We also wanted to swap a stand out that has rusty cables, so that we can replace the cables on that stand. We ended up getting everything done but move the corner stand and trim out access paths to a few sets. We will get that done tomorrow. We are also going to head to the other farm, hang a new double set and trim lanes there. After tomorrow, we should be almost completely done getting the prep work done. My daughter and I in the Poison Ivy Stand. Always a great stand, with a long history of successful hunts. Hopefully she will film me putting one on the ground here this year.

  24. there are different levels of violation. hunting out of season, spotlighting, not tagging etc. all fall in to a different category then salt licks, 2 minutes past sunset etc. The DEC even sets different levels of fines. So the question is... is it worth starting a feud with your neighbor over just because you're a rat snitch?

  25. 1 buck would certainly kill my gun season as well... or perhaps I become more selective and possibly get no horns at all. In all honesty I try to shoot a 2.5 or older during archery and then i'm strictly trophy hunting for gun. But it gets me out there. Then if all goes according to plan I'll harvest a doe or 2 for meat. It's a self-inflicted OBR with the opportunity to shoot a wall mounter if it presents itself. It usually doesn't. haha.

  26. I pulled a few cards this weekend and saw a few fawns with spots. It looked like they were quite pronounced and not fading. I've seen fawns during early Oct that had very faint spots on the upper sides.

  27. Two years ago and that was the only time. It was a spotted fawn that hung by one deer stand like a lonely dog. Latest I saw it was mid oct. Almost every sit in that stand u would see it, then stopped after a couple weeks. It was tiny as well, id say considerably smaller than most fawns during that time of year.

  29. It's not uncommon to see spotted fawns right into firearms here, past years. I have a lot to add to this thread for this year, but not until I get a good accurate assessment. I know this year fawn numbers are way down. That a fact, and it worries me. Looked like good breeding numbers, last fall too.

  31. Standing corn is a lot different than soybean, it provides cove ,by time season comes the bean will either be picked or about to be picked, you won't like going to the stand and having a cut field or one that is being cut while your I. The tree, why not put in the effort and see where entrance trails are and back track them into the woods closer to bedding or travel coridors, field hunting is ok if you want to see deer ,but it's much more effective to get a deer that you may see coming, than see deer that you can't get.

  36. Call the DEC.I never understood this mind your business/turn a blind eye mentality when it comes to game violations. It effects you.Why would you ignore it? It also explains his woodmanship and hunting skills as far as the deer on his wall.

  37. Shawnhu- do hunt them, have a post on .22 hornet going elsewhere. Stoneam2006, When do you anticipate setting in your earth anchors? I'm thinkin in putting some in along historic travel trails pre deer season/ground freeze and leaving the loop end exposed to I can hook them up after deer season and frozen ground if it looks promising. Good idea about the K9 proofing. Let's keep those idea going as most of us have k9's in our areas. Wilderness trapping is something I'd love to do but I live in farm country and lets face it, nowadays the coyotes are closer to home.

  38. Tell him you saw an ECO parked near the property. Maybe he was checking things out? If your neighbor has any brains , he'll remove it before the season starts. Now you know why he's got some nice racks on the wall..

  39. Bring it up in conversation that you saw his setup. Be nice and explain ti him to be careful because it is illegal to use the salt lick for deer. Don't make it sound like you will turn him in or anything like that. I can see people using these things for pictures but when season roles around and a nice deer is hitting the thing it will be hard to take away.

  41. Here is a write up I did on them... I have played with the Trocars and killed a couple deer with them. Only reason being is they reminded of an old Rocky Mountain broad head design from back in the day. Some good and bad points on them. The good...they seem to group excellent, maybe because of the offset blades that create a helical I don't know...but the shoot very well. They are also quite in flight. Both deer I killed were pass throughout, one died in sight and the other had typical blood trail for about 125 yards. Both double lung shots from tree stands. The bad on the Trocars. They are a one a done head for two reasons. First reason being that the tiny set screw gets gummed up and it's almost impossible to change the blades. One out of three willstrip right out and the time it take for a blade replacement with that in mind....forget it. This isn't insurmountable because honest you can replace the whole head for almost the cost the blades..... However the second reason they one and done is even though the ferrule is steel really isn't that strong, and solid hit and they don't spin true. They blade retention has weak points as well as I have seen a few sheared blades in solid impact tests. Lastly the blade offset really tears the hell out of your broad head targets and makes some removals a pain in the ***.... So in short I wouldn't be afraid to use Trocars but I would limit it to smallish thin skinned game like deer and lopes.... My first choice in heads...no but serviceable.

  42. The 12 gauge offers a lot more pellets in the shell. Those extra pellets may help to put a couple more in the head and neck when you shoot. That could make all the difference in your success. Some guys still prefer a 10 gauge for turkey for that same reason. If the birds you hunt are usually close, it's not that important. But at longer ranges, pattern density is very important.

  43. The one thing I keep hearing about 10 is the amount of data mining it's capable of. Good for Microsoft, not so good for privacy. You can 'opt out' of a lot of it but you'll have to spend the time physically doing it. I'll stick with 7 until its no longer supported.

  44. I haven't been asked, but I can tell you how not to handle that dilemma, and I don't even have to be the head of the DEC whitetail management team. The antlerless season is actually a good idea, but to waste that activity by assigning it to the least effective hunting weapons/season sure does bring into question the sincerity and credibility of the effort.

  45. I wouldn't even do a food plot, looks like a travel corridor spot. Would use it for bow hunting once and a while if I had permission too it. Not too much property, hang a stand and tread lightly til the opener.
