The difference is that when you give outlaws 8 weeks to break the law the numbers add up. That is not doe numbers, Thats how many extra hundreds-Thousands of young bucks taken out. The ones that i know that do it or have done it take the first antlered buck they see and the old lady's tag goes on it and then they hold theirs for the rut and a bigger buck. Shorten the season and shorten the crimes.Which in turn saves lives. You can still shoot little bucks if thats your choice but you only have 10 days to do so.5 points

3rd deer for the freezer. 11-12 came flying out of the dark pines down in front of me. Tails were down and hauling azz. They ran right under my stand. Don't even know if there was a buck or bucks in the mix. Picked out biggest body and bleated verbally , they locked up and shot her from 10 yards. It ain't easy picking something up in a scope that fast. Good thing I was only on 3x and not 9. Took out top of heart and I believe both lungs. 2 hours later of dragging I had her to my car. This was at 1:30. Still one either sex tag left for Monday and or Tuesday. Come on snow in 9H4 points

Seriously, you need to expand your hunting grounds from your traditional 8 acres in Putnam. I give you credit though, I would have given up hunting long ago if I were in your shoes... If you are talking numbers, I had three gross 150 class deer killed on places that I hunt this season. Not bad for NY, but definately not midwestern stats.4 points

The grass does always seem greener on the other side of the fence doesn't it? .... lol. Yes, I can jump in my car and drive all over the nation or maybe even Canada to find a few extra inches of bone, or I can step out my back door and climb the hill and try to take the best animal available right there. Heck, if all I am interested in is something to hang on the wall, I can pony up the bucks to head for one of these guaranteed canned hunt kind of places where they provide genetically constructed build-a-buck trophies, and put all those Ohio or whatever bucks to shame. Is the easiest hunt the best for everyone? Apparently to the author of this article it is. Sorry, but I think I am intelligent to figure out the hunting area that best suits all of my needs and wants. I don't need someone else to figure out what kind of hunt that I need and what I am supposed to be setting as goals and measures of success.4 points

Now please tell me how they came up with that Number?: See the last I knew, and I reported 2 buck this year, all they ask for in the report are the # of points on each side. Sorry but that pretty much tells them bupkis....4 points

Not everyone cares about a trophy. Shoot what you're happy with and let everyone else do the same. This shove trophy hunting down everyone's throat is ruining the sport. I too let all 1.5 yr old bucks walk and I don't always kill a buck every year as I hunt only state land but I'm certainly not going to begrudge someone else the right to shoot a 1.5 yr old buck if its legal. Comparing a sight in of 47 yards and a possible long shot of 75 yards with a modern muzzleloader to a 228 yard shot with a centerfire is foolish. Yes, shooting at long ranges requires more preparation with the firearm and load combination. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST WAS ABOUT. 75 yards max, not 200+ were every 10 yards makes a big difference in drop. At 75 yards the bullet will be only a few inches, 3 or less, drop from the 47 yd sight in range. Well within a 9-12 inch kill zone of an average whitetail. Maybe some of you have, but I've never experiance any short range shooting where a bullet suddenly goes a foot off target when sighted in slightly closer. With arrows maybe, but bullets, haven't had that happen. If you want to post about 228 yard muzzleloader shots, multi-drop range estimations, etc. fine, but start your own thread. This one was about short range muzzleloader shots, not long hail marys you all seem so fond of.3 points

Coyotes have been in NY since around 1920... it's a wonder we have any deer at all in NY based on what most hunters believe about coyotes vs. deer... the danger that coyotes pose on the NY deer population is a huge perpetuated myth started by ignorant hunters to justify their inability to see and to kill deer. The fact that the whitetail is on the menu of 20-30,000 coyotes in NY has no more impact than the 400,000 hunters that also have deer their menu. Just like with hunters, there are isolated areas where the impact is greater, and others areas where there is little impact if any. Neither is a true threat to the overall herd. But, of the two, the hunter is really the greater threat to the deer herd.3 points

I have had a lease in Ohio the last 3 years and shot 2 bucks in the 140's but I won't be going back next year. I think killing a mature buck in NY Is a bigger challenge and more fun. Seeing a rut in a big buck state is a must do for everyone it truly is amazing. To me I hunt for the challenge and shooting a mature adk buck is about as challenging as I have found in hunting.3 points

Spent the last 4 hrs taking this out of the metal crate, assembling, and redoing all bolts with loctite blue and lockwashers. It looks and feels solid now. Also have some synthetic 4 cycle I'm going to swap in after I let it run 20 min or so this weekend and a NGK plug they suggested as a swap. Added a girl basket for effect. She gonna flip when she sees it Xmas morning. Can't wait to get her going on it! Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk3 points

What about the people who do not hunt so they have something to brag to their friends about? Of course seeing and taking a big buck are great but why manipulate the seasons to facilitate the ones that only care about how big of a buck they can shoot . The amount of large bucks in NYS i feel is enough to really appreciate the times when you do get one . The mindset where everyone deserves a trophy for participation is a big reason this country is headed in the direction that it is.3 points

I know a few on here say we cant be like Ohio.Illy Kansas and such but i say bull to that, No guns in rut. Shorten the seasons. Have doe dates and Nyb would grow some huge bucks. Look atbthe ones that were taken this year on Antlers site and i know of a few brutes i saw that would have fit well on that page. Feed them and give them some age and look out!3 points

Went to Iowa this year the second week of November for a bow hunt. This is my third time going New York is not even close to Iowa as importance of deer and deer management. If you go you will never want to come home. Also figure how New York could have it if we did it right. I was successful mid 140's but really happy it dressed out at 240lbs..... Third times a charm saw bigger but second to last day and was not coming home empty hand the third time.3 points

This might help clear it up..... ISIS: "We did this because our holy texts exhort us to do it." DEMOCRAT: "No you didn't." ISIS:"Wait, what? Yes we did..." DEMOCRAT: "No, this has nothing to do with religion. You guys are just using religion as a front for social and geopolitical reasons." ISIS: "WHAT!? Did you even read our official statement? We give explicit Quranic justification. This is jihad, a holy crusade against pagans, blasphemers, and disbelievers." DEMOCRAT: "No, this is definitely not a Muslim thing. You guys are not true Muslims, and you defame a great religion by saying so." ISIS: "Huh!? Who are you to tell us we're not true Muslims!? Islam is literally at the core of everything we do, and we have implemented the truest most literal and honest interpretation of its founding texts. It is our very reason for being." DEMOCRAT: "Nope. We created you. We installed a social and economic system that alienates and disenfranchises you, and that's why you did this. We're sorry." ISIS: "What? Why are you apologizing? We just slaughtered you mercilessly in the streets. We targeted unwitting civilians - disenfranchisement doesn't even enter into it!" DEMOCRAT: "Easy access to guns is what drives your anger." ISIS: "It's not the guns! We will knife you, hang you, burn you, run you over, and bombs are easy to create in our kitchens! We don't care about the guns! In fact, civilian guns might actually make it difficult for us!" DEMOCRAT: "Obviously we need to ban all guns. We need to overturn the Second Amendment." ISIS: "By Allah, you are a motherless tool! The weapon is not the issue! Our Holy Jihad against you is the only thing that is important!" DEMOCRAT: "Climate Change is the reason you rage against us. We deserve it." ISIS: "WHAT??!? What the hell does Climate Change have to do with this???" DEMOCRAT: "Because of Climate Change, the oceans will rise by one-tenth of one inch, and that makes you furious...." ISIS: (facepalms) DEMOCRAT: "You see no future for your children because of Climate Change so you strap bombs on them and send them into shopping malls. ISIS: "NO DAMMIT. It has NOTHING to do with Climate Change or Gun Control or ANYTHING like that! It is because we follow the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad, who tells us to put all unbelievers to the sword! We are commanded by Allah to kill you all!" DEMOCRAT: "This is all caused by the fact we bullied gays and transgenders in our past. If we hadn't been so mean, and accepted Bruce Jenner for the amazing woman he was all those years, you would not be trying to kill us. Please forgive us." ISIS: "ARE YOU INSANE??? We kill gays the moment we find them! We hang them by their necks any chance we can! Islam hates homosexuality!" DEMOCRAT: "Listen, it's our fault. We resisted resettling you in our country. We should have given you more welfare and food stamps. We don't blame you for feeling unwelcome and lashing out." ISIS: "Seriously, stop taking credit for this! We worked really hard to pull this off, and we're not going to let you take it away from us." DEMOCRAT: "No, we nourished your extremism. We accept full blame." ISIS: "OMG, how many people do we have to kill around here to finally get our message across?"" DEMOCRAT: "Gun control will fix this."3 points

Ok, I cannot comment on all of this until all 157 pages are read. I'll be back. Scanning the material, it looks like an all-out war on deer is being launched in NYS. The effort to eliminate deer in NYS is now not only the agenda of the DEC, but also the USDA and the Department of fish and wildlife along with all of the interests of the Citizen Task Forces. This ain't a good time to be a whitetail .... lol.2 points

Breeding is resurfacing once again here. Bucks on the move. Antlerless muzzleloader season only. Nocturnal doe, which is normal for this time of year. Only option is to shoot buck fawns, which we refuse to do. Now how is this antlerless only plan working out for you, New York DEC.?2 points

And every state has the same problem. Idiots in every state, so to speak. It's like saying people from a certain geographical region are less likely to enter in the books. They have nothing to base this on other than their really freaking small personal observation, which is much more likely to the be the same if you were to pick up and move to Athens, Ohio, or Buffalo County, WI, or Zone 5 in Iowa...there is nothing compelling hunters like a unified conspiracy to not submit to the books within a certain area. People think their area is always exception to the rule.2 points

I have seen a muzzleloader hit 6" low from 35 yard sight in and a 100 yard shot. It was a 348gr. powerbelt with 100 grs of 777. so with that being said holding on dead kill (lungs) would allow that particular hunter and muzzleloader to completely miss the deer. I do have to ask why did you ask the question if you aren't concerned about it?2 points

I may hunt in one of the "better" counties in the state for deer...it is private land...but FAR from being "managed" for big bucks. I have no food plots and no exclusive hunting rights to any of it. It's as "real world" as hunting gets in NYS and most bucks get killed off at 1.5 to 2.5 which is on par with the rest of the state. Anything that lives older has done it entirely on it's own survival abilities...2 points

Why would I want to travel far everyday to hunt? I deer hunt in NY 1 day per week a few miles from my house. I wouldn't want to travel hours each way everytime to hunt public land upstate. I have no issue knowing I'll never shoot a booner in NY. I'll take an 80 inch 8pt in my area just as much as I would take 130 inch 8 pt from a food plot on prime private land in western NY. I'm not complaining about NY not being a trophy state, I'm just stating the facts that it is not anywhere close to on par with other whitetail states. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Must be pretty good guts, they are eating it all upside down!!!LOL2 points
-
Agreed BUT they do not have to kill to ruin a piece of property. In our case we had neighbors that lost 9 fallow deer in 1 night. Not eaten.Just killed. That i lay part of the blame on poor fence upkeep but the case was still over population. When you have them growling at you while gutting a deer or have 2 pin your Lab up against your back sliding door in your yard, you have a problem. Even the little they may kill, in many numbers they will ruin a piece of property just being on the landscape. Whitetails and turkeys will vacate the area and the small game population will be decimated. Been there, Done That! Didnt buy property for their enjoyment. Now add in livestock and the plot thickens. I like the part about the studies they they will just keep coming back. Like i said, after 4-5 years i am just starting to see and hear them again. Game On!2 points

You guys can say bull to whatever you want, but the facts are what they are. Shorter seasons, etc might lead to "better" hunting, but we will never be Iowa, Ohio, etc. Certain portions of the state may come close, because those areas have better soil conditions, but there are other factors. Hunting pressure, number of hunters, the land is broken into relatively small parcels, farms being broken up, overly mature woods, the DEC does squat for land management, etc. Even if we change the things that we can, and do exactly what those other states do, the majority of NY will never come close. Then lets add in that, as has been said, trophy bucks arent everyones idea of good hunting. Im more picky than some about what I shoot, but who am I to tell someone that the things I value about hunting are the same things they should value about hunting? Ill talk to them and point out the benefits, and why I believe them to be benefits, plus Ill point them in the right direction for information, then just leave it at that and they can decide for themselves if its important to them or not. Im not into shoving my agenda down anyones throat.2 points
-
We certainly don't need NYS government running the show when it comes to hunting ,they have proven time and time again that everything they get involved with turns into a cluster of junk. It should be dictated by each and every sportsman who pays to hunt and does their part ,the TV shows have mucked up the waters for what hunting started out as.2 points
-
Correct. Hunter #1 could certainly learn from seeing the deer's body. See exactly where he hit the deer, what he may have done wrong. I have trouble believing it was a solid heart/lung hit and still traveled 1.35 miles. Of course, it may have been a decent shot, and an extremely tough deer. AND the final take home message for hunter #1... keep tracking! If he followed blood for 1.3 miles, he shouldve been out searching after the blood stopped. At that point, you pull out everything you have at your disposal. Search dogs, groups of buddies, kids. No matter how thin it may be... 1.3 miles is a lot of blood. Any deer deserves a complete search, but if you give up on finding it, you are giving up that giant trophy rack as well.2 points

Got the squirrel taken care of, thanks everyone for your suggestions and help!2 points

It depends greatly on the persons personal experience viewing cam pics verses real rack size values. It would be fun to spin off this thread with people posting cam pics of deer they have harvested, had officially measured; to answer your original question.2 points

I've been doing a lot of research on Iowa and it looks like they have it pretty well figured out. I'm going to start putting in for preference points this year, hopefully in 2-3 years I will be able to make it happen. To go out there during the rut and see a lot more mature bucks would be well worth it for me. Let alone actually connecting on one. It seems they are all on the side of letting them grow. And I've read up on the cost of their NR tags being expensive, but it insures that serious big buck hunters are the ones purchasing them from out of state. Kind of wish NY would take some lessons. We have great bucks that "make it through", but could have a lot more. I know others have different opinions but that is mine.2 points

That's like buying a truck and not using it as a truck. All my guns are work horse type guns. They look very pretty out of box, but soon have dings, scratches, and character.2 points
-
It seems to me that once the animal has been reduced to non-edible carrion, it is no longer a "harvest", but simply a search of antlers. The only salvageable part of the find is the antlers, so the shooter is no longer looking for a deer. ....just the antlers. At that point the antlers become the same as sheds and whoever finds them gets the ownership.2 points
