  2. I agree with those above. I have the Swarovski 3.5-18 with the BRH on my .204 ruger tikka rifle and it works ok for that and off the bench target shooting. But for any type of big game hunting, I believe it would be confusing. There are a lot of marks and they are heavy, easily misused in the heat of the moment. It is very cluttered and obscures a lot of the target. I often find it more trouble than it's worth when coyote hunting as well. It's useless for fast moving targets. The 4W reticle is a better choice in my opinion.

  5. Take 8C out because of the specialty of that unit - talking 8H, 8F, 8G or any of the other WMUs impacted. We are limited - and I am speaking specifically to the DMPs because EVERYONE knows the antlerless statewide BOW/ML needs to go away. It is really screwing up WMUs. DMPs - you have to pay to get them and draw. You get two. Then, you need to go back Nov 1st to get two more. (which, if you didn't know, bow season opens OCT 1!!!!!!) Then you need to beg borrow or steal from another hunter to get two more. What brainiac is incapable of seeing that hunters are limited here? The DEC needs to allow OTC in those units and allow for repeatable harvests for those who have access. Why does a hunter have to find a consignment? Not exactly that easy to do. But it sure looks good on paper as "opportunity" and an excuse for the DEC fanboys to claim. Remove the barriers for hunters who can shoot does in those units and stop making them jump through hoops. Get your DMP, shoot your doe, get a replacement OTC, and rinse/repeat. When the DEC deems enough harvests are reported, close down the tag issuing.

  6. I don't understand why hunters with medium velocity CF rifles still sight in at 100yd zero. If you sight in 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" high at 100yds you can have a + or - 3" trajectory out to 270-300 yards. A deer's vitals are about 9" in diameter a hit anywhere in that 9" circle will result in a quick humane kill. W/a + or - 3" maximum point blank range you would hit in that circle W/a center POA to beyond 270-300yds & could hold" on hair" to 400 yards or more. The trajectory is a parabola & it will cross the LOS 2 x no matter where you sight in. Sighting in 2 1/2" high at 100yds will have the bullet cross the LOS at somewhere around 25 & again at about 240 yards depending on Mv & BC.. W/a 100yd zero those values will be something like 60 & 100yds, hitting as much as 15" low @ 300yds My 8 x 57 W/200gr Hotcore (not a very high BC) @ 2730 fps Mv sighted in 2 3/4" high @ 100yds will cross the LOS + 1/10" @ 25yds, - 1/10" @ 230yds. It will top out @ +3" from 120 to 145yds & hit 3 2/10" low @ 270yds. Something like a 7mm-08 W/140gr Ballistic tips would have a similar + or - 3" PBR sighted in 2 1/2" high @100yds closer to 300yds. The point is, you will not miss a deer @ close range sighted in 2/12" high @ 100yds & if you happen into a chance @ a good buck that is across a meadow or on the next ridge of a power line 300yds away you won't have to guess hold over. Anyone that knows their actual Mv & the bullet used can give me that information W/the height above the bore that their scope is (low medium or high rings). I can plot out your 100yds zero for + or - any trajectory value you want. For deer the usual is 3", for Elk perhaps 4" to 5".

  7. With the Winter Bow season open till Feb 20th and 24" of snow that fell the week befor I headed to my stand hoping for a nice doe for the freezer. A group of deer came by from several trails and I spotted a good size doe limping into one of my shooting lanes, I drew back and just as I was about to shoot I noticed this buck trotting in on the same trail, so I held my draw while aiming on the same spot and when he was in my sight I let fly my arrow. It was a double lung and he ran 80 yards spaying blood on both sides of the trail in the snow, stopped and tipped over. When I got there it looked like someone threw a bucket of red paint on the snow. I am truly blessed and look forward to sharing this bounty with friends and family.

  12. I've been using this call for the past 5 or 6 seasons with pretty good results. Love the fact that it has never once froze up on me no matter what the weather. I lost mine while dragging out a deer early in October. I guess that's the only problem I had with it was if you loose your grunt call, you loose you doe and fawn calls with it. Keep an eye on that little spring fastener on the lanyard so it doesn't rust and break off the way mine did. Soon as this snow melts I'll be looking for mine, but I wont hesitate to order another if it doesn't turn up.

  14. Look first of all in the WMU’s where the doe only was put in place it wasn’t because hunters are unwilling to kill does. Those WMU’s most of the land is in privet hands. So if you can’t get access to the deer you can’t kill them. No matter what incentives or rules put in place you are not going to kill more does. It’s as simple as this if we can’t get to them we can’t kill them.

  22. I think bucket lists are OK. I don't think I have ever gotten to the end of any list because I am too driven in that sense. If I am nearing the end of the list, there's more things going on it. Travel/culture dominates a leisure bucket list. I want to have a suit custom made in Hong Kong while I am visiting. Saw it once on TV when I was younger and it is just stuck in my craw. It's probably the most far out of reach one for me - not so much financially, but the logistics seem implausible as I get busier with work and family. I may not be capable of making it there until I am much older and I am not sure the luster will remain at that point. So far it has. I did scratch a bucket list item last summer, jumping off of a 35 ft cliff into vibrant blue waters high up in the mountains of Jamaica. Also got in one last family vacation with everyone there. Family is much older and spread out now, and we all knew it was the last time we're all in the same place...until a funeral happens. We laughed, we fought, we cried, and we drank way too much and we had fun the whole time. It was awesome.

  30. Doc Thank you for pointing out my inconsistencies in the vocabulary/grammer of my posting. Of course my initial response was defensive. I could blame my accident and the resulting traumatic brain injury (19 day coma,3 months in patient hospital status and three month out patient rehabilitation to recover everything but my ability to walk. But that would be to easy and incorrect. But my 6 1/2 years of basically staring at four walls( except when a friend or family member can take me fishing or hunting) were an indirect influence on my posting. The real culprit is my laziness. I should always re-read my messages before posting. So to make my post more grammatically correct and easier to comprehend. It's time for the hunters of the state to speak out concerning the mishandling of over population of does in certain DMP's, by making those management areas, antlerless only for a portion of the archery and muzzleloader seasons. The 2015 implementation of antlerless only served to take hunting days away from a percentage of hunters. Don't believe it will accomplish its intended goal. Instead of adapting a new rule that punishes (restricts) hunters, they should establish a new rule that provides incentive to the hunters to take a doe or two. The fact his there are a percentage of hunters that don't believe the taking of antlerless are necessary to maintain a healthy herd. Or,whose misplaced sense of worth as a hunter is only qualified by taking of an eight point or better deer. So, my recommendation would be, in DMP's that have an over population of antlerless deer, set up a program were taking two antlerless deer would qualify a hunter to receive an additional either sex tag for the late season or a newly formed seven to fourteen days added to the current late season. Intellectually I believe this would provide more of an incentive to hunters in the effected DMP's to take anterless deer. As a DMP unit comes into the desired buck/doe ratio, the incentive for that DMP would be rescinded the following year. In closing, I hope that all concerned hunters take the time to address the DEC's request for input. Don't want to suffer through another experience of letting a trophy buck walk by because it wasn't legal to shoot. Follow up, Please John M Doc, If, I was going to be called out on my laziness for submitting a grammatically flawed posting, at least it was by the person that I enjoy reading the most on this site. Your postings are the most thoughtful and well written. And it is always a pleasure to read.(although initially, this one was hard to accept) As far a length of posting, lack of mobility, being contained within four walls( lack of social interaction) probably attributes to my lenthy postings. My apologies to all with a short attention span. Of course the length of the posting is visible prior to the decision to read. So, if length of posting is important, just skip it.

  31. I've been wanting to try my hand at taxidermy for a while now. A friend walked me through the mounting process on my bow buck from this past season. I ended up picked up 5 bucks to mount. After dealing with some serious frustrations with the whole splitting/fleshing of the face, I finally had a cape ready for the pickle and tanning process. The test subject was my wife's opening morning buck. Thankfully, everything came together smoothly and I'm pretty happy with the results. Now, just have to give it a couple weeks to dry...then I can airbrush, paint and add the finishing touches. BEFORE: On to the next one!!!

  42. sorry for the sideways photo.....11/10/15, PSE Fang, Rage Broadhead, 20 yard shot....10 yard tracking job. Oh, and before I shot her, she was being chased around by a buck about 100 yards away....I stayed in stand for a little longer hoping he would follow, I finally got down and figured I would drag her a ways off before gutting with plans on hunting the area later on, as I was dragging I noticed the buck making his way towards me so I slowly walked back to my stand which was now at the base of the tree and waited....he walked to within 20 yards of me and went to her and stuck around offering me numerous perfect shots.......he was the biggest 4pt I have ever seen, but we have antler restrictions so all I could do was sit and watch...good show none the less.

  45. Opening day 9pt! I hunted yesterday afternoon and even though it was super windy I still had an opportunity at this buck. I shot him at 27yds with the Rage 2 blade, these broad heads have never let me down! I have taken 4 bucks with them now and never had one get away. This is not the biggest buck in the world but where I hunt you just can't pass them up this size.
