I took a walk down to the creek to get some shots of some wild flowers today. Hiking along when a momma wood duck and her kids went scurrying across the water. The babies made it safe to the creek bank and hid underneath. Momma however put on the "lame duck act" and began splashing around trying to lure me downstream with her. Out of nowhere from behind me this hawk came ripping past my head and nailed her right in the deepest section of the pool! I had my short lens on so I had to make a quick change before I could do anything. I could hear all kinds of splashing going on but now I couldn't see over a mound of creek rocks. When I finally got situated and peaked over the rise, I saw momma duck swim under the creek bank on the other side and this hawk swimming for the other shore! Momma took a solid hit and there were feathers floating everywhere. She curled up in a hole and didn't come back out while I was there. Not sure if she made it or not. Mr. Hawk didn't stick around long once he dried out from his high speed plunge! Very cool to see such an attack so close!8 points

First card pulls of the new antler growing season!!! I am very happy to see this guy (aka Wannabe) still alive. The last pics I got of him were just before daylight on 12/13 (which was the final day of regular gun season) and he never showed up during post season like he has every other year. He is now a 5 year old...been watching since the summer of '12 when he was a yearling 8-pt. My fingers are crossed that he will add some inches after the mild winter and break 140 this year. We'll see in about 7-8 weeks... Last year: This guy almost fooled me, but I recognized him after taking a closer look at the pics. I saw him several times post season still wearing antlers into late february. He is a 4 year old...while he doesn't appear to have the best genetics, he has a lot of character and I can't wait to see what he looks like in August!!! Note the scar over his shoulders... The three evenly spaced notches in the left ear... Last year:7 points

I know two buddies that have 3 screws and opted to NOT have the modification done because of fear of decreased resale/value. They simply only carry it with 5 in when hunting and the cocking of the hammer will line it up on a live round.4 points

It does stink unloading vest, stacking calls, looking to a dedicated gun waiting on spring again. But, Deer season is coming turkeyfeathers. Plus a lot of other good stuff in between. Thank God we do the outdoors, always a next season coming4 points

Im out on the ,SS pos with Mrs. 302 when I see something off to the side in the water, birds I figure except it's to brown . Turns out to,be these two deer swimming across Irondequoit Bay just south of the bridge. The wife is saying don't scare them they'll get tired. I stayed back killed the motor for a bit . I tell you'll once they. crossed , I figured they catch their breath for a bit , nope full speed up a VERY steep hill .3 points

Larry302 is exactly right about the 'heeling' issue during the shot. It's a natural response with even small-bore target handguns, but definitely becomes more pronounced with the boomers. A solid rest will help you determine if the gun is at fault, or if it's a form issue. In my considerable experience with handguns, I've found that it's usually a matter of slightly adjusting the nut behind the trigger.3 points

Nice shots wooly, and you had the ID right. It's a juvenile redtail. They don't get the red tail until maturity, the juveniles have a brown banded tail as shown. Cooper's hawks have banding on the tail but it is more distinct and broader bands and they also have much more distinct banding under the wing. The shape of the hawk clearly marks it as a member of the Buteo genus as well, Cooper's hawks, sharpies, and goshawks all belong to the Accipiter genus.3 points

Well I gave it all I had, not a gobbler from the roost again today, busted 1 off the roost @ 5:45, sat it out till 9 hoping there would be 1 nearby. Took a walk,at 10 I set up again and called aggressively, had 2 gobblers sneak in quite, season ended 5 minutes later!!!3 points

Next turkey hunt. Give me your nastiest predawn turkey hunting misadventure.... I'll start out with this...I was at camp and I was trying to be quiet going into a spot I hadn't set up for the day before...I get to a wide beech and sit down ..no gloves on yet and dark. I start to slowly move leaf litter away from me to set things down...my hand slide through a bigole greasy pile of raccoon dung..yep up around and in between my fingers...I about lost it...physically and mentally..you know how I love raccoons..end of hunt...2 points

Tuesday morning I awoke and peered out the window at our duck pen and noticed we were missing a couple. This got my suspicions up as we had lost a duck Saturday night already. I knew something got them and when I went out with my dogs to investigate I found out what was enjoying a Duck dinner on me. It was a Great Hornded Owl!!! I removed the netting over the ducks and tried to scare the owl out. It wasn't sure what to do to get out and eventually I ended up removing all of the net. I thought about grabbing it for a brief second and quickly decided that wasn't a great idea at 530am with no coffee so I kept at it and eventually got it to hop out. It sat there hissing and clapping its beak at me. It finally flew a little and I knew it was ok so I left it alone. It took off at some point and left. What an ordeal! Never a dull moment for us between our hobby poultry farm and all the critters there is always something going on. I'd prefer if they didn't eat my dinner before I can but if they want to bad enough it can be hard to stop them. Last night something chewed it's way into the duck house and took out my favorite duck so now I have to go home build them a fortress that nothing can get into. What a handsome devil.2 points

Hitting high right like that, can be a sign of heeling as one anticipates the recoil . I'd shoot off a sandbag or other rest, start close , and move back. If you moved that group down and left, most would be in the black . They'll tighten up in time .2 points

Oh boy I have some work to do over the summer. Little high right but in my defense the previous owner said I would as he shoots odd he said. I'll play around next time out. These are last 18 of 50 I ran thru her today. Lasered 34 yards. At least I could hit the broad side of a barn ???? Far less bite n bark than I expected but own a .45 and this is pretty tame. All my fillings in my teeth are still solid but the percussion did keep the skeeters away ???? Loving my first wheel gun. Everything from pushing the ejection rod to dump empties , stuffing freshies in there, the way it holds in my hands. I may have to pick up another revolver .... or 2 ????2 points

But it's not a problem when the 'domestic extremists' are produced by divisive Leftist rhetoric? The only threat this professor is concerned with is that the establishment of a global New World Order now has a vocal opponent expressing the concerns of a sizable portion of the US population. This entire article is a fine example of precisely what the author is railing against, but it's deemed acceptable because it fits the Leftist narrative. I personally can't think of anything more "extreme" than an agenda promoting the dissolution of US sovereignty.2 points

Been dry , real dry. Thinking it hasn't rained since first week of May if I remember correctly. Some light showers overnight and again this morning. House shaking from thunder right now. Unlike our last golden retriever this one could care less at the noise. Finally a day I don't have to water the garden2 points

Thats pretty cool. I almost ran over some deer on Canandaigua lake a couple years ago. Most of their body was under the water. I thought it was an upside down picnic table but it was actually their ears sticking up.2 points

One thing I noticed is the difference in use between corn and soybeans if it's not a field secluded. Corn provides cover and soybeans not so much. Deer travel patterns or preferences for blind spots in the field with be different.2 points

Made it to Ohio for daylight. Satellite and top scouting was good once. I put eyes on the property and even saw and heard birds. Hoping to hit 1 spot in Indiana and maybe make Iowa before dark. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk1 point

I managed to get a few (blurry) photos of the gobblers in my back yard yesterday afternoon. I heard them gobbling while I was doing yard work. I still have a tag left , but it would be illegal to discharge a firearm or bow with houses all around me. They sure are making it difficult for me to do the right thing.1 point

It was a little too choppy out on the lake for the girls, but in a short time we did hook three smallies, landing (2). The first one looked to be about 15". A bad knot let go on that one right next to the boat. The second one would have been a legal keeper at 20", but was a little "rough" looking and that is a bit larger than I like to eat, so she got to go back also. The last one was too short to keep now at 14", but very healthy looking. It was good to see that the bass population looks healthy and stable out there. I prefer to eat bass, since they have more oil in them and are therefore better baked, grilled or broiled than walleye or perch. No one questions their superiority over those other species in the "fight" department and they are usually easier to locate. I am not into catch-and release fishing, and was hoping to get into some walleye or perch, which are better fried. Also, the boat needed a "shakedown" cruise to make sure everything worked properly. The "real" bass season opens up in a couple weeks and when it does, I will be targeting 12-18" bass to restock the freezer. We finished off the last vacuum-sealed package from last year for dinner on Memorial day, which gives me more incentive to get out there. That vacuum sealer is amazing when it comes to keeping fish tasting fresh. I would like to see the May season minimum length go back to 15", like it was for a few years. 15"-18" bass are far more abundant and usually much healthier looking than those 20 + inchers. To me, "catch and release" fishing is just the senseless maiming of a fine food source.1 point

Not usually a fan of vanilla in my beer, but this is understated and straight from the freezer . I'd drink it again .1 point

Good thing you didn't decide to handle the owl, Doe.. I still have scars on my arm from MY encounter with a great horned owl, and that took place when I was 15 , in 1965... hehehehe... Resulted in another of my MANY tetanus shots when I was younger...1 point

As for their average od bucks per square mile, my numbers at camp this year 10 buck, and 6 doe.. of the buck 4 were 2.5 or older, 5 were 1.5 and one was a button, which goes in their doe (anterless take. ) that's off 200 acres, there are 640 acres to a square mile, so I can assume then my buck take is 18.75 bucks be square mile.. they dec estimate for my wmu is 4 per square mile.. now if I add in the neighbors bucks I know of our take for a square mile was 19. But that is averaged out over thousands of acres.. I don't know how they can manage any population with their sheer guesstimates....1 point

first nice ruger, second consider a red dot. a 44 is good for 100 yards and down and one really doesn't need a scope, wife and I love our redots. I can hold 2 inch groups at 100 yards with my SRH .and the only mount you will be able to buy to mount any optic is the b-square mount unless you are going to drill and tap, but why ruin the revolver. as for ammo if you don't reload, google 44 deer hunting ammo tons of offerings. myself I load 240 grain xtp's over 21 grains of 2400. wife and I hunt only with out pistols during gun season..1 point

Scope wise, I had one on my 8 inch Dan Wesson .44 for awhile . Took it off did not need it under 50 yards and it just made the whole package rather large . I was at the time only carrying a handgun . What's your plans ? If you'll be carrying a rifle too, no way I'd scope the handgun . Only the handgun? , see how you shoot it and really what are you looking to,get out of it? A more challenging way to hunt ? Hunt thick area with short shots or field edges ? Nice gun have fun .1 point

Followed this from another hunting forum..... I'm not surprised by the outcome; hunters lost again in voting. Until as a group we find a suitable spokesperson to articulate with the same passion as the anti's, the message will never persuade the neutral majority of the public.1 point
