  1. Been hearing reports of nesting snappers so I shot out to look for a few this evening. No luck with them, but I did find a couple green herons hunting frogs down in the crick. These things normally give me fits trying to get close enough to them. Today they acted like I was invisible! Must have been drunk on frog slime, lol

  2. I've read some reports that it took the kids several minutes to make it through the obstacles before he was able to enter the gorilla pen. The mother was busy trying to take the perfect selfie at the time. Multiple witnesses said that the kid was hammering about entering the gorilla pen for several minutes but yes, kids do say the darnedest things. Those witnesses also said they watch the kid struggle for several minutes to enter the pen. Several problems here if all of this is true. #1. I understand when you take your eyes off of your kid for a split second, they can get into trouble. But to take your eyes off of your kid for several minutes? Forget that you're near a dangerous animal, what about the large crowd of people? You're not afraid of your kid wandering off with some stranger? #2. If all these people saw a 4 year old scaling a fence and crawling through thick bushes, after they had heard him say he was going to go into the gorilla pen, no one said anything or tried to do something. It's a total breakdown of society. Lastly, I do honestly think the gorilla was trying to protect the kid but also, having never handled one, did not know how fragile there are. He was probably threatened when the crowd start yelling more violent than what he was use to. All the dragging he did with the kid was to eventually find a quieter corner which he settled into. I think an innocent gorilla was killed. I think the zoo did the right thing for killing it. I think this whole tragic event could have been avoided if the mother would have paid more attention to her child. I have a paid family membership to the Bronx Zoo so I take my son there several times a year since all my visits are free after my annual payment. The Kodiak Bear and Polar Bear exhibit is setup the same way. A wooden post fence, a think strip of bushes, and a moat separates the bears from the audience. I have a firm grip of my son's hand at all times in that area. Even in the children's petting zoo area, I'm still no more than an arms reach from him. Not just for his safety but also just in case he grabs a chicken a little too violently so I'm also doing so for the animals sake.

  9. I love pits, & wouldn't own any other breed. But if you can't control them, and don't train them right, you shouldn't own one.

  21. From May 20 democrat & Chronicle Rifle hunting on way to permanent Livingston County bill clears Senate LEO ROTH @LEOROTH Since 2014, hunters in Livingston County have been able to use a rifle to hunt big game legally. But the law allowing the use of longer-range weapons to harvest whitetail deer and black bear was only temporary and is scheduled to expire on Oct. 1. The process of making the law permanent is now underway. New York Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, and Sen. Patrick Gallivan, RElma, have announced that legislation they sponsored to authorize use of rifles for big-game hunting permanently in Livingston County has passed the Senate. Young and Gallivan secured passage of the original legislation but as is customary where rifle hunting is newly allowed, it was only on a two-year trial. “Sportsmen are an invaluable booster to our economy and for many hunting is a way of life,” Young said in a statement. “Permanently allowing rifle hunting will continue to grow Livingston County’s economy and keep local rifle hunters from having to travel to neighboring counties to hunt.” Livingston followed Wyoming, Allegany, Steuben, Ontario and Genesee in enacting rifle legislation. Statewide, rifle hunting is permanently legal in 43 counties. For decades, safety concerns regarding the possible use of rifles in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes Region were hotly debated. Projectiles from rifles travel much farther than shotgun slugs. However, studies have shown that hunters who use rifles tend to be highly safety conscious and more selective in taking a shot because of their gun’s range. The 2015-16 hunting season was among the safest on record. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, there were 23 shooting incidents, third-lowest number since records started being kept in the mid-1950s. And for the first time, there were zero fatalities. “The temporary law allowing rifle hunting in Livingston County has been a success and it’s time to make the law permanent,” Gallivan said. “This is great news for the sportsmen and sportswomen of our region and the local businesses that support hunting.” The new Livingston County rifle bill is No. 7187. It has been delivered to the Assembly and referred to the environmental conservation committee.

  28. Very nice ! I went a similar route with a Yugo M48 Mauser in 8x57 that I wanted to be able to use as a deer rifle.. I bought a MOJO SIGHT which is a peep that attaches to the rear sight base. I removed the rear sight and just attached the peep to the base with a couple of set screws. That way the rifle is not altered in any way and I can remove the peep and re-install the original rear sight to return the rifle to it's original state.. The only things I have shot with it so far were a sick coon and a couple of porcupines, however...<<grin>>.. I must say, though, the 8x57 with 150 grain Hornadys DOES pop a porky out of a tree with authority !

  35. we got the same info several weeks back looking at leasing 100 acres in ny. said at the 20 year date re-up or return land to what it was.... need to do a whole lot more investigating when I get back. seems too good to be true, if everything seems legit we will give all the paperwork to the lawyer to investigate further.

  39. Sorta on a side note. I've always suspected my dad of 92 was in WW II but never had positive confrimation as he's never talked about it. He has a 30-40 Krag with ramp sights I've thought maybe from the war. I asked my 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters and all were aware but said he declined to ever talk about it. Sorta feel jipped not knowing where he was but NOT going to ask if he's avoided talking about it for 70 years. My sister sent me these pics. Marine ! The only reason I got confirmation was about month ago he was in hospital and nurse asked if he was a veteran and he said "yes".

  40. Nice outfit WJ, the Remington 591 and it's 5mm chambering was and is real nice rifle for short to moderate range chuck hunting. I always thought it to be better than the 22 mag which is also a good little round. I think had the 5mm had been chambered in some other rifles for a bit of a selection to choose from along with different loadings as the 17 HMR has received it might have been a lot more popular. Aguila still makes runs of 5mm ammo every now and then to keep the old 591s usable. That conversion to centerfire was a good option if one is a handloader, it kicks things up a notch and you sure can't beat cost per round. Al

  42. I'm not sure what was so misleading about the OP's article. All it said was that the majority of voters were against the banning legislation (which is correct even according to your ballotpedia site). And certainly most of the state legislators (both D's and R's) were too. Do you not like Maine's bear hunting regs?

  43. So the wife and I went down to the Florida Keys last week for our first anniversary. Not sure if you were aware, but there is a sub species of weight tailed deer that live down there called "Key Deer". I thought I would share some pictures of a nice buck that we saw while we were down there. And yes, that is a normal sized sign next to it. They are the smallest sub species of deer. I have some better pics on the actual camera, but the phone ones were easier to upload. You can't hunt them, but I'm thinking about going down and trying to find some sheds from this boy. Would make nice compact rattling antlers. ????

  45. Out for a short hike yesterday when I found this little yearling surrendering to the harshness of winter. I'm sure this little deer was frightened out of it's mind by me, but near the end she just seemed to accept the fact that she was going to die and didn't fight it off any longer. Things got a little hairy when I crawled under the tree with her. The shot of her standing up in my face was the last shot I took before she put the hooves to me and decided to run through me instead of around me,lol
