No we didn't catch a ton of fish. Been a slow start to the season. Only 2 salmon (1 King and 1 coho) both less than 10lbs. Got a late start too. But weather was perfect and I really enjoy the time with Dad. It's well worth playing hooky from work now and then. Figured out how to run 4 dipsy divers without tangles so that was good too.4 points

Dip sticks have a very useful purpose. Please don't malign dip sticks like that.3 points

Yeah, I wish that one could have come out a bit better. I had switched from my 600mm lens to my 300mm because one of the adults had been making some very slow passes at close range along the cliff edge just sort of hovering in the wind. It left me a bit undergunned for that shot of the fledglings dog-fighting, I had to crop in quite a bit and focus wasn't spot on, probably because they weren't a large enough target in the viewfinder with the shorter lens. Anyway, here's one more shot from a week ago right after one of the adults made a kill. The falcon had been sitting on this same branch when it dove down into the valley below and I watched it streak out about 1/2 a mile over the farm fields. I couldn't see the kill from that distance but I knew it had successfully knocked something out of the air when it circled around and landed out in a plowed field. After several minutes it flew back up to the same perch, with the blood and feathers of some unfortunate bird stuck to its beak and talons.3 points

If this is someone's vision of 'the new American man' we have a serious problem. On the other hand, I've been laughing hysterically about it all day in between muttering obscenities. A prescription for 'growaset' and a few weeks in 'man-camp' are in order.2 points

I also read his second reply article....I can not think of any way to comment in a civil manner...Other than to say ...his comment "in all my 30 yrs as a journalist....." hit the time line pretty close...because 35 yrs ago, real journalism died..2 points

Not a hunting article but I'd imagine it would apply to all squirrels. http://www.lostateminor.com/2016/01/10/warm-winters-are-making-squirrels-fat-everywhere/2 points

I will just say that they do not take kindly to getting too close to their "nest" which just happens to be on the first floor of our barn. I WAS gonna work on bracing the second floor platform but momma was pretty insistent that I vacate her territory. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk1 point

My grandfather says he wants to be flown into the mountains and dropped naked so the wolves and scavengers can eat him. He's pretty serious about it.1 point

Visited the peregrines this morning after getting back from a week of vacation and found that two young falcons have successfully fledged. Here's a few shots from today and some other recent photos.1 point

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the image doesn't always tell the whole story. Sometimes the events that lead up to a photo are more impressive than what was actually captured! I know they say "a picture is worth 1000 words", but sometimes a little narration goes a long way painting a bigger picture of how that shot came to be. You nailed that one from both angles, and I admire your work as some of the best I've ever seen.... but you already knew that!1 point

your serving can be still tied and not hanging but if they stretch you'll sometimes notice gap(s) in the serving. spots around the end loops and where the string with serving comes around posts or turns in the cams are always spots to watch. when your bow is at rest you might see a lot of serving wear on the end where it wraps around the cam. that's a place you're always resting it on something or making contact when not drawn. around the peep strands can break or fray more. how worn the center serving is where you knock your arrow is another spot to watch. your string should never look overly dry and fuzzy. it should look smooth and slick or it needs replacement and/or you're not waxing it often enough. don't use something like a piece of leather to work in a harder wax. the friction and heat will prematurely wear the string. just get a good, soft, wax to begin with and just spread it along the strings and cables with your fingers to coat the outside. excess is removed. don't wax the serving. only the bare portions of the string. if your peep doesn't come around or stay aligned consistently enough that it's blatantly obvious, your string is probably broken down enough that you could benefit from replacing it. even if it looks fine.1 point

The very concept of personal happiness is contrary to the teachings of Islam. Subservience and personal misery are the cornerstones of the entire ideology. In an odd sense, the 'paradise' they seek to enter by blowing the hell outta innocent people is readily available in Las Vegas, and death is not a prerequisite. That's what they're angry about: that people can be free and happy without having to die for it.1 point

That is special. The only vulture nest I ever found was also in a barn. Some think they are ugly. I think I want to be fed to them when I die.1 point

The first year I planted soybeans the deer were NOT used to the crop and really did not bother it much to the point where in the spring I lightly disced it in and they reseeded themselves. That was the last year that ever happened. Now I leave 3 acres standing for winter feed. By late march the deer have it completely consumed every bean. Once the beans emerge from the soil the deer hit it every day. So from June to when they strip the field bare...you will have deer visiting it. I believe they like it more than corn. Caveat of some note: they seem to hit the field hardest after dark whereas they visit the cornfield during shooting hours. At $65 a bag.....it's a great return for your money. You just have to make sure you plant enough acreage so the deer don't destroy the field before July.1 point
-
One thing I noticed is the difference in use between corn and soybeans if it's not a field secluded. Corn provides cover and soybeans not so much. Deer travel patterns or preferences for blind spots in the field with be different.1 point
