So our son has been working his tail off for us doing all the poultry chores we throw at him and then some all summer (including 5am wake up call) on top of putting in hours at another small farm that go towards getting into the Junior National Honor Society, and 4-H and being a kid. I decided that he needed some type of reward and I had a good idea of what to get him. I already had the caliber in mind and all that was left was the gun choice. Being his first rifle and that fact that he is 12 I figured a 7mm-08 and a Tupperware stock would fit the bill nicely. I ended up with the Savage Axis and had to special order it because he is a southpaw like me and no cares about us leftys, lol. We we surprised him with it today, made him close his eyes and open them when I placed the gun in his hands. Of course we ran out back and fired a few rounds and he loved it. He is on the hook for the scope, I always teach my kids that hard work is rewarded and that you are responsible to earn the things you want in life. He saves every dollar he earns walking dogs and what not and has enough for a serviceable scope already. So proud of my boy, this is a big day for a dad. Now we we are off to a minor league ball game!5 points

I planted an acre this morning.....75 pounds of seed, 150 pounds of 15-15-15...Broadcast the seed and fertilizer with my buddy's ATV broadcaster and then did a light discing to work it in.. I am currently praying for rain for prompt germination... IF we get some rain soon, and IF we get a "reasonable" amount of rain, and IF we don't get an early frost, I may have mature grain by the end of September. Other wise, I still hope to have enough high nutrition greens to benefit the deer, plus improving the soil in that plot for whatever I decide to plant there next year.2 points

Just came back from the Old Lahaina Luau. Pig cooked underground, mahi, island crab salad, island chicken, Poi, Uala, taro leaf stew, and lots of other stuff I can't remember! I don't think I can eat for a week! And plenty of Mai- Tai's!2 points

Wild hog roast, mashed potatoes, garlic broccoli, and applesauce. Before and after. Heading up to Lake Ontario tomorrow, hate to leave Momma & the kiddies without something to eat, so I made a tray of stuffed peppers, they just have to put them in the oven at 350 for 1 3/4 hours. Weather looks good, and so do the fishing reports this year. Fingers crossed!2 points

You guys kill.me won't hunt a spot because a shooter might walk by.. do you remember when bow started Oct 15th? I look at the 2 extra weeks as a bonus and would hunt just to get out there and get one in the freezer.. Wait a few years till deer numbers are really out of wack and they put an early antlerless only muzzle loader or crossbow season in .. then the whining will really start..2 points

If I have this wrong...the DEC.wanting to increase harvests and opportunities is: 1. Allowing the youth hunters to use cross bows during the youth hunt? Yet not expanding seniors participation in bow season by allowing them to use cross bows, yet they are the one that spent their hunting careers,as it were, funding the DEC in license sales'.....hmmmm 2. Rescinding the 2wks doe only in "over run areas" but not doing any thing to increase kills By giving out those extra tags early,or allowing cross bows into all of archery, with bow hunter ed course as a mandatory thing. ( don't argue I won't change my mind) So this is what I'm seeing right? Such progress, for all the $ they spend on survey's , studies etc, etc. They really addressed what hunters have said to them....1 point

I can't shoot them in any of the bows i shoot so it seemed like a no brainer to me. I could use a little good karma right now though,i got bit by something in the ankle while cutting the lawn yesterday and i'm debating about going to the MASH care to have it looked at .1 point

Do you have any facts once so ever that full inclusion alone is the reason for the equal deer take or are you just using that 1 piece of the puzzle to push your agenda? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Redfields are what I have on most of my guns that I might one day carry in the woods. They are a nice scope they seem to hold a zero very well. I haven't set one side by side with a VX1 but I will tonight when I get done work and let you know what I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Agreed. NY has one of the longest deer seasons and up to 7 tags per hunter. Plus all the public land. The same people that complain about NYC influence on upstate also forget that NY has a northern zone with an early MZ season. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

You are absolutely right. In a few years the DEC will cram their muzzleloader season into bow season, but it will have nothing to do with whether bow hunters were able to bring doe numbers down or not. For at least a decade, the DEC has been aching to get any kind of firearms into bow season that they could, and have even been successful to some extent in doing so. Now they have concocted a scheme that justifies exactly that, and there is no doubt in my mind that they will push that scheme just as far as they can with or without the bowhunters humble submission. I don't believe that the DEC thinks for a minute that bowhunters alone are able to control doe numbers. That is just their cover-story. And it appears that they are selling that story to some.1 point

I don't see the correlation. If I can hunt another spot where I'm allowed to shoot a buck I shouldn't, just to "do my part" in 9F? I do my part there, I shoot does there every year. If they want more taken stop making us wait until November to get additional tags.1 point

If your looking for a shop to tune it up for ya, I suggest flying arrow archery across the river in east greenbush. Not far from you at all. I've heard good and bad about them but I've always been treated fairly and the owner absolutely knows his stuff. Prices are on par with every other bow shop I've been to. They are really helpful and take the time to set your stuff up right and then take you in the back to the range to shoot to make sure your good to go, even with a show room full of people waiting. Now it's time to get lots of shooting in before season opener! I stopped at my buddy's house for a min yesterday and was talked into flinging a couple arrows quick. Started at 60 with 3 arrows. Dead on. Went to 70 and flung 3 more and still good to go. Was all the time I had to shoot yesterday but it felt good to be shooting Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Yes you are reading that right. Personally it didn't put a hamper on my bow season at all. I might sit a few times in early/mid October, but generally I like to conserve my energy for hunting the rut (late October- early November). I don't like the idea of giving NYS an inch, but I'd like to see them bring back the Oct. 15th season opener. As it is now, by the time the rut rolls around, every yokel with a bow has had almost a month to spook every deer in the county. It's really no wonder why the deer go nocturnal.1 point

The 3x9 Leupold Vari 1 scope is an iconic classic that has a long unmatched track record in the field that can not be beat for performance, reliability or a company that stands behind it's product for the money. I go back to the sixties with Vari 1 Leupold scopes of both straight power and variables, always did their job in any conditions with Zero! issues. I am still banging away with them today and expect them to continue on for yet many more years after I am long gone. You will never go wrong with selecting a Leupold scope. Al1 point

Just recently one of the Bloomberg anti-gun groups suggested to leftist/collectivist politicians that they should substitute the term 'gun lobby' for the term 'NRA'. They have. This effectively placed all 2A rights proponents into one convenient basket for them, whether the individual is an NRA member or not. These people are not actually anti-NRA, or even anti-gun. They're anti-individual-rights. The NRA is composed of individual citizens, as you've said, and the anti's have been repeatedly hammered for years for trying to tie firearms manufacturers and related retail businesses to the funding of the NRA. The anti's know this claim is a lie, and the citizens are beginning to realize it as well. The NRA is certainly vocal, but unlike the politicians, their financial support comes entirely from grassroots sources. It gives the anti's 'splodey-heads' to think about that chink in the armor of their self-righteous narrative.1 point

While I wish I was up in the woods at the cabin with my old man... I did have a nice relaxing night on the Island with the kids and wife after a long work week. Was sipping some scotch while enjoying my fire pit... Would much prefer my 10x10 pit at my dads but hey.. is what it is.1 point

To add to Eddie's post......make a mix of permanent ink with a oil or Vaseline. Then apply to just the back side of rails. Remember to use the rungs only to climb. They grab rails and transfer the permanent ink to their hands. Push comes to shove..They leave ticked ,maybe with stand but May leave prints as well as pics.1 point

Some of older guys can't use a climber . I would put up one of the $60 ladder stands from DICKs along with one or two trail hidden cams . I would also lock the stand to see who comes in with bolt cutters to cut the lock or chain . You would be possibly be losing $80 worth of stuff but might get the satisfaction of catching a thief and getting everything back . Maybe check Craigs List for tree stands for sale and see if anyone near you is selling any . You might find your missing stand . A guy I met a couple years ago said he did that , turned the seller in to the police and they found several other stolen stands in the guys garage .1 point

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today unveiled new regulations concerning deer and bear hunting, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. These regulations increase opportunities for junior hunters to take bears, rescind an antlerless-only rule from 2015 in portions of southeastern New York and the Lake Plains, reduce antlerless harvests in two management units in the western Adirondacks, and clarify when special season tags may be used by bow and muzzleloader hunters. “We rely on hunters to help us meet our science-based population management goals, and these new regulations will help us explore alternative season structures that will advance improved population management,” said Commissioner Seggos. “The youth hunt has been very popular with families across the state, and we’re pleased to offer this expanded opportunity for junior hunters.” The new bear hunting regulation now includes the taking of bears in the youth firearms hunt over Columbus Day weekend that was previously a deer-only event. The 2015 regulation that prohibited harvest of antlered deer during portions of the bow and muzzleloader seasons in Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) 1C, 3M, 3S, 4J, 8A, 8C, 8F, 8G, 8H, 8N, 9A, and 9F has been rescinded, allowing the take of both antlered and antlerless deer during the entire bow and muzzleloader seasons in these units. In these WMUs, deer populations are above desired levels, and the antlerless-only rule was implemented in 2015 as part of a multi-phase process to increase antlerless harvest. However, reported harvest of female deer did not differ substantially between the WMUs with the antlerless-only periods and nearby WMUs without the rule, nor did the antlerless-only periods increase reported female take as desired. In contrast, deer populations in WMUs 6F and 6J have been declining, so harvest of antlerless deer is now prohibited during the early muzzleloader season in these units. Winter weather conditions are a primary driver of deer abundance in the northern part of the state, and the winters of 2013 and 2014 were especially harsh. Coupled with mild conditions this past winter, reducing the harvest of antlerless deer should prevent further population decline and stimulate growth. The DEC expects this change to be temporary. The final regulatory change is simply a technical correction to clarify that hunters who purchase both the bow and muzzleloader license privileges may use the Bow/Muzzleloader either-sex and Bow/Muzzleloader antlerless-only deer tags in either season or both in one of the seasons with the appropriate implement. This has always been DEC's intent, but ambiguity in the previous wording of the regulation could have led to confusion. Hunters who purchase just one of the special season privileges are still only allowed to use the Bow/Muzzleloader tag during that particular special season. Under the 2016-17 budget, Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure. The 2015-16 budget also created a new capital account, which, along with federal Pittman-Robertson funds, will be used to manage, protect and restore fish and wildlife habitat and will improve and develop public access for fish and wildlife-related recreation. This year’s commitment builds on the previous $6 million in funding for 50 new projects to provide access to approximately 380,000 acres of existing State lands for recreation, including boat launches, bird-watching areas, trails and hunting blinds, and $8 million for upgrades and improvements to fish hatcheries statewide. well, I think they're hunters either way, just different goals.....I honestly have nothing but respect for the guy who will sit in the woods for an entire season and pass up everything for that one big buck, that says a lot to me, there's a lot of hunting time involved in that, and I'm sure when they see any deer coming the heart rate goes up in anticipation of what it might be...you take the guy who sits for an hour the entire year and fills his tag and packs it in for the season, what can be said about that? I don't pass judgement on either, it's those who look down their nose at the other for one reason or another that ruin it. But we're straying way off topic at this point, so.1 point
