After the shot...........I look around......no one there to see that perfect shot. No one to fist bump. No one see's me walk quietly to the dead deer, kneel down and say a little prayer. No one see's me put a spruce twig in it's mouth to send it's spirit on it's journey (I'm part Native American). It's quiet, just me and the deer. My hand on it's hide, I embed the memory of what just transpired into my soul forever. No one is there when the process begins, to put the wonderful meat in my freezer. By this time, hopefully. someone will be there to share a time honored congratulations and a smile. And without asking, help drag the deer out. I've pretty much always been a loner when it comes to hunting deer. So I'm not sure how it will be when I see my grandson take his first deer. Perhaps there will be a fist bump, loud yelling, dancing around? But he is a lot like me, so more than likely after I dry my eyes, and tell him how good he did and how proud I am of him. We will both go through my time honored routine, together.7 points

I shot this buck some time ago and had It mounted......not sure why I had it mounted......I believe I did because everyone I hunted with on that property seemed to miss deer and when I finally saw a buck I killed it......myself personally I like the look of this little six point.......I have an 8 pointer that I get back in 3 days6 points

The first thing I do is to roll up the window, unload and case the rifle and tell Bubba to hide the spotlight under the blanket in the back seat.5 points

so this buck was shot down south opening day......45 minutes on watch and he was down.......story to be told was my old lady was sitting right next to me and she was 9 months pregnant with our son.....2 days later she went into labor......he was chasing a doe and I made a shot happen at the right moment.....the picture makes him look a little smaller then what he is but again he is no monster but a trophy between me and her and we also felt we were together as a family even though he was in her stomach....I get him back in 3 days so I will post the pictures.....I had him mounted in full sneak to show how we first saw him when we saw him chasing the doe.....I cant find at the moment a better picture....hope I didn't bore anyone4 points

Frustrations with shops is what prompted me to start doing it all on my own. I am happy I did. $100 would be fair if the shop is really going to spend two hours tuning the bow. Peep and loop take 5 minutes or 10 if you are slow like me. Most won't really tune and many archers won't know the difference between a really good tune and simply installing a rest and setting centershot to factory recommendations. I hope this shop does you right for that price.4 points

So yesterday on my way home I stopped off at Campsite Sportshop in Huntington Station to look at the ARES. They also had an M1A Scout and Socom with a shorter barrel. Both were very very nice solid firearms but way too heavy for my liking. They were also north of $1800 each. So after hemming and hawing and asking questions about the ARES, I found out that they had a generation 2 in 6.8 spec (which is not made by ARES) with the sporter's stock, the lighter poundage trigger, a standard AR charging handle and a 16" full length hand guard. They swapped out the factory 223/556 caliber and installed the 6.8 spec at the shop. I also learned that the 7.62 is not being manufactured yet. So after some negotiations, I got them to throw in a bolt catch ($40) and also having them mount and bore site my Trueglo red-dot scope all for just south of $1300. I am picking it up tomorrow and can't wait to take it to the range. I will take and post pics this weekend.4 points

I was going through some of my old hunting photos and found these from 2008. I was fishing on a lake in the Adirondacks when my buddy and I saw this doe walking through the water. We could see from about 300 yards away that she had something on her ears. When we rowed closer, we could see that she had tags in both ears and a collar. She went along feeding and paid little attention to us. I wish that I had a better quality camera at the time. I was rushing to get some pictures and unfortunately most were blurry. Too bad wooly and alloutdoors weren't with me as they would have gotten some much cooler shots.3 points

Wow this thread went a bit off the tracks. I didn't read it all, but I guess most agree that there are areas with high deer populations where controlling those populations is difficult because large land tracks are owned by people or entities that either allow limited or no hunting. How to fix it, who knows. Will tax breaks work? Perhaps for some of these owners, but for some it may not. Will a business entity allow hunters on? Perhaps if the incentive is big enough. Would a lawyer recommend it, depends on the desire on the client. If the client says, I want to utilize this tax incentive because it will save me $200k a year in taxes (an example only), my response would be to advise of the risks (economic, suits, neighbor considerations, municipal relationships) of opening the land, and then after an informed discussion, the client would make the decision and I would do my best help the owner limit the risk if the client still wanted to utilize that incentive, be it releases, acknowledgement of assumed risks, and appropriate insurances. Lots at play here. There is no doubt that its tough to manage deer on lands where hunting is limited or prohibited. I still don't see how leasing equates to ruining conservation, but that seemed to stop being the topic at some point.3 points

Or you can put it in your hotel room when its raining out since the balcony gets wet.... Just have to remember to hang the do not disturb sign. And leave the sliding door open to air the room a bit especially if you shot a goat. LOL2 points

I agree, I have my opinions on the matter and have stated them... But at this point everyone has beaten the dead horse and shot it a few times too! Yes there may be a access problem in certain areas but we live in a capitalist society and it is what it is... Should the towns open up town land to bow hunting 100%. Should town ordinance that prevent bow hunting in a town even if you have enough land be down away with 100% but the rest of it is what it is.... And people need to learn to deal with the hand they have been dealt and STFU Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Nice. Sometimes it's not about points, but rather about other things. My dad has several 8pt+ mounted, but he also a 6pt mounted. The reason why is because he shot the 6pt on December 6th on my brother's 6th birthday! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

I should add that I believe this to be my grandfather's from the Korean War. Unfortunately I couldn't find the sheath. I also have a box of old ammunition I'm going to post pictures of. I doubt it's worth anything. But im sure I'm not the only one who likes old outdoors items Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk2 points

$30 is more than reasonable to press a bow and install peep, put on a loop, etc and tune. $100 is BS Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

50 yards. I will say I shot a right handed bow for 18 yrs, I'm left I dominant. I shot good right handed, I'm shooting so much better since I switched to a lefty last year, my groups at 40 yards are like my old 20 yard groups. Loving my mission Ballistic!2 points

Most of my hunting is done solo. Who the heck am I going to whisper to ? I also shoot a smoke pole so I gotta wait for the smoke to clear and watch which way the deer takes off hoping I made a good shot. The deer whisperer2 points

It's been a hectic summer with my wife and I getting our living room remodeled. We added a wall to the living room and created an office for me that attaches to my work room. Few pics... Added a couple of drying walls The work room still needs some work. I plan on doing that this spring after I make some money of the venture. Not sure about what I'm going to do with the walls yet, need to add a sink too... Horn porn!!! We'll see how it goes. I have lots of connects around here that are promising to bring me their deer...lol1 point

I ran into a friend from high school today and we were talking and I found out he had started hunting. We chatted for half an hr and he was telling me that he hunted with a 300wby and was in his cousins camp in the ADKS. I asked him what made him get that gun and he said when his cousin invited him to camp he bought a hunting magazine and in the mag was an article about a 300 why mag so thats what he bought. It made me chuckle but it made me think back on why I use what I use and what made want to use it. When I was a young fella my whole family that hunted carried Remington pumps except my great uncle who had a 740 that always jammed. I can remember everyone ragging on him about cleaning it and it being junk. When I was 13 i milked a lot of cows and threw a lot of hay and I saved up money all summer and bought a brand new 7600 in 308 and a leupold Vx-1 in 2-7. That fall at camp I can remember that gun hanging on the rack for opening weekend and it looked so out of place hanging there with its barrel hanging out the end farther than most of the others. I remember sitting on the floor and staring at the racks admiring everyone else's guns, while I listened to the guys tell stories about bucks they had shot and missed. I remember there was only 1 bolt action a rem model 7 "I think" a few winchesters and Marlin levers a couple Remington autos a couple savage 99's and a Winchester 88 lever and all the rest were pumps. On are way home I told dad I had to have the barrel on my gun cut down like everyone else's and that week dad brought me to have it done. That's what started me on as a gun collector. I know own at least 1 of every model of gun that was on the rack that weekend 20 years ago. It's a memory I will never forget. It was fun for me thinking back on why I started with what I did and how I still love my pumps to this day. What does everyone carry in the woods and why? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Apparently when they went up through the urethra and busted up the kidney stone this past spring they didn't get all of it . At least now they won't have to do that procedure again . I thought the pain in my back was something else until I got the call . Thanks for the Sympathy ........1 point

No new equipment or land news, just a lot of time in the woods scouting since January. I scouted new state land last winter and spring and am looking forward to a few new stand locations this year. I've had 4 trail cameras out in this area since mid July and am encouraged to see some nice looking deer. Had the local bow shop put new cables and strings on my 13 year old Parker bow, and it's shooting real well.1 point

Land owners suck because they don't let you hunt for free, hunter that lease suck because they can afford it. City people suck because you think they are better off then you. No gas, no cars, no hunting land ...no jobs. Sounds like some people need to focus more on work and getting their lives in order and less on blaming others for their perceived lack of success.1 point

Started out with a Rem 7600 in 30-06 'cause Aagaard liked the '06 and the Benoits sold me on the pump. I actually bought if from a Benoit up in VT one vacation day, they had open up a small shop. It was in the rack, brand new but it was his gun, a cousin or something. He had it set up with their trademark peep sight. But it had the std. 22" bbl. I went with a VxII 1-4 on it for a while but it ruined the carry. Never did get that gun cut down to 18 1/2". Still grab it when I get serious or the weather turns bad. While I have a load of others now, custom 7x57 mauser bolt, huge 475 turnbull lever, a short .308 and a black bear in 338 fed, 30-30's and many, many more, it's the 7600 that seems part of me, guess 'cause my first real gun was the 'ole wingmaster!1 point

We/you cannot do this.I wonder if you work with the town/area and allow the sharpshooters to use your land if they would allow the land owner to be able to keep some of the meat/Deer and Donate the rest in the land owners name.I have seen the culling of Deer in my county/at a college farm and year after year they kill about 70.I do find that it is ok for the hired shooters but not for the hunter to bait them use of lights and shoot with a firearm but if we do it we get our asses in a sling.1 point
