Finally! A decent buck in range!35 points

One more day to get it done in bow season for me. This has been a real tough season. But I will not complain . I've passed up a bunch of small bucks and seen some shooters but had no shots. Also chose to pass on a few doe. Was hoping to see my grandson get his first deer, but, it did not happen this year. Overcame an early season injury, that could have been much worse. Saw some beautiful sun rises and sets. Watched the leaves flutter to the ground and saw them blown sideways by the wind. Felt a crisp autumn breeze in my face and was chilled. Was warmed by seeing my lifelong friend and his daughter harvest nice deer. Watched a button buck for almost three hours feeding close to me on an oak ridge, from a blind I built myself. And wondered if our paths would cross again in the years to come. So tomorrow another bow season will be in the books for me. And weather I get a deer, or not. It's been a bow season to remember.18 points

As my name says I'm an old newbie. At 61 years of age, this is my second season deer hunting, and first with bow and crossbow. I got into it late last year, gun hunted state land (8W), saw 1 deer, shot nothing. This year I've hunted a few hours several times a week since October 1. I had an early disappointment - shoulder shot a deer that we couldn't find - and since then none of the deer would give me a profile that I was comfortable shooting. Drew on a 4-point three times in one day, but let it walk. I was really starting to think I might get nothing again this year. But today that changed, and I brought home my first ever whitetail! It's not a trophy - just an average doe - but for me it's 'success'. I won't bore you with the details but it was a 25 yd shot from a ground blind with my Hickory Creek mini-vertical crossbow. My first time field dressing a deer too. I'll just say, hard to remember those YouTube videos in the moment, but I got through it. Was surprised how easy it was to drag with lots of leaves on the forest floor. Best of all it only went maybe 20 yards and the total drag to a trail where I could get it on my tractor was maybe 40-50 yards. I had two goals for the season: to take a doe and a buck, one on crossbow, the other compound. So one down, one to go. Thanks to all who responded to my calls for advice.. couldn't have done it without you. (BTW the wound on the upper shoulder is exit, not entrance. Was lower on the other side.)12 points

One more picture of him with my favorite little guy, my son Ivan. @mlammerhirt I shoot 67 pounds and 27 inch draw length. I will say I've never had a pass through with a rage, but, I like the idea of the broadheads cutting as the deer runs. Thanks to everyone for the congratulations!11 points

11/12/16 will be a day to remember . Me and my brother took the last 10 days off from work. We hunted everyday sun up to sun down. Passed many small bucks but no shooters. In fact the last 3 days we didn't see a deer between us. Keep in mind we never left the woods (all day sits). Needles to say we saw the time dwindling . ... but we said we would grind it out. I shot my buck at 7:45am and he shot his at 8am. We each got the BBD text. My buck came in chasing a smaller 8pt. he grunted hard and snorted at the buck. he came in at 35 yards and my arrow found the mark. Never saw anything like it. His gunt lasted 10-15 seconds . as I was sitting letting a few hrs passI had a 9pt 4pt and spike come by. My brother let out a few bleats and had this 164 inch gross 10pt buck walk out of a swamp right into 15yards. He droped in sight. It all happens so fast. Hang in there guys and gals if you are getting frustrated .10 points

Calling it a done bow season. No deer seen this morning. But cams are showing multiple bucks at night on both properties . Will spend the rest of the day washing hunting clothes and getting everything ready for Saturday's firearm opener . Best of luck to all who are sticking it out to the end. Anyone have a good recipe for tag soup?.......lol5 points

You can't really tell from this video still, but this fine fellow has messed up his right side rack, G3 is gone, and G2 is just a shard. Shame. I had video of this deer working a scrape a week ago. Looks to be a nice 3 year old.3 points

I was thinking about getting one of those chips that you put on things so if you misplace it , you can track it down ( Tracker ) . I don't think they sell them by the gross .3 points

If you are looking for accurate, I can verify that both of my Sakos are tack drivers. Silly accurate. And beautiful rifles to boot. I should note note that one is now Grampys but still in my safe until he wants it.3 points

First deer with a crossbow. I was in a ladder stand in a row of trees looking onto the a large field. Heard crashing directly behind me at about 9:30 a.m. Got my safety off and waited, but nothing ever came through. About 30 minutes later, I spot a buck exiting the trees about 40 yards to my left. Looks like a medium-sized 4+ pointer. I get ready. The buck is making a wide arc in front of me. I wait till it crossed the trail running straight in front of me, just past a large bush which gives me the only cover I have at this point. Distance of about 32 yards. The bolt hits in the lung kill zone, but is a bit high and does not penetrate fully. The deer immediately drops and tries to get up on its front legs, but can't. I spined him. Best I can figure, the bolt deflected off of a rib up into his spine. So he is just lounging there looking upat me with a bolt sticking out of his side. I immediately recock the crossbow and reload. I had to wait a few seconds until he turned his body to give me shot. He gives me an angled front shot. Penetrates the side of chest and exits out his lung. Immediately starts making noises and kicking his front leg. 30 seconds later it was over. Except for moving in a circle, he never took a stop past where he was initially shot. Am glad i didn't have to track him. Feel bad he had to suffer a bit more than he should have, but it was still pretty quick all in all. Field dressing him, we noticed only one lung was damaged; suspect the second shot hit a major artery. Is only a five pointer. Only one brow tine, and it looks like one tine got broken off. Estimated dressed weight of 100+ pounds. Sorry about the ninja smurf outfit; I don't photograph well.3 points

Hello to all @ HuntingNY I am from Carle Place, Nassau County. I hunt a buddy's property, 300 acres in Delaware County. No luck on the bucks, for the past 3 years, lets see if the gods change that this season. Be Safe... Ralph2 points

I have always sighted MPBR also...I don't get too scientific about it, however... Most modern high intensity cartridges with a muzzle velocity of from 2600 fps to 3000 fos, if you sight on from 2" to 4" high at 100 you are good holding mid-ribcage out to 300, or farther with the higher velocity numbers..2 points

Just got back from up in the North. It was crazy windy and very warm, unseasonably warm!! I didn't see much activity and the lack of snow hampers my style. I hope to get back up there this weekend and stay until after Thanksgiving; my wife has made it a tradition to cook a turkey and ALL the fixings at camp for the last few years. Nothing better than opening that camp door to smell the turkey and sit by the wood stove after with a full belly... Best of luck guys !!!2 points

I accidently clicked quote instead of like so now I'm stuck quoting your post . If I had more time I would love to build a platform in there and be nice and wide . I drew up a quick sketch of my idea that I know would work to eliminate movement from the wind ,it really comes down to not taking up a bunch of time to do it. Hillbillies every where with hammers and scrap wood would be shaking their heads at me .2 points

Remington 7600 35whelen or my tikka t3 35whelen both shooting Barnes 225 tsx. If I get bored with them I might carry one of my 44mag carbines or my new to me remington model 14 in 35 rem. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Never owned one (no interest) but have shot a couple. Dad owned a 30-06 Mark V that I plinked with a little but could never warm up to the odd bolt lift and the fact that said bolt weighed almost as much as one of my ULA rifles. Oh and the stock design and finish made me wanna puke. Other than that, they were OK.2 points

Moved some stands today for better shots with a gun. Also they started to cut my corn, they let my kids and i hop in the combine and take a few laps. My 5 yr old daughter gets out and tells me she wants to b a farmer when she grows up. Priceless. Bumped one deer walking back to move a stand, got some pics of a nice buck moving at 4am. Saturday can't get here soon enough.2 points

That tree is begging for a strap on/chain on portable stand! They would never see you in there and it would be much safer and much easier than building a wood stand2 points

Last one I buit quite a few years ago I put a 2"x6" on each side of the limbs and bolted them together with threaded rod 3/8" they never moved in 10 years used 2" x 6" planks to stand on also. wear a safety harness and or put a railing all the way around, they get Slippery in the rain and snow.2 points

So a recap of the weekend and my days off. Saturday morning I was able to get out, so I headed to the farm I have been hunting so far this year. I went about running a scent drag around the plot from the other side, and into my shooting lanes. About an hour after light, a small spike came through the brush, followed my scent drag right to both of my lanes and posed broadside in both of them. That was it for the day. Saturday evening and Sunday I was not able to get out. Monday morning rolled around and I headed to the farm. I saw a doe early, but could not get a shot at her. A few hours later, I saw movement on the other side of the plot in the brush. Out jumped a nice doe with young buck right on her tail. She fed around the plot, but never got into a lane, and eventually left with the buck following her soon after. I made the decision to leave and head to another farm, where we hadnt been hunting much all season to keep the pressure off. I headed to a new set that I had hung this year. This set is actually in an area that I previously had a stand, but the new one was positioned differently about 30 yards from the old one. I got setup and waited. Just before sunset I saw a deer heading down a very heavily used trail right toward me. From the point of about 70 yards away, right up until the trail turns towards the stand 20 yards away, the trees line up so they are like a visual wall between the animal on the trail and the stand, so it gives a ton of time to get ready as long as you see the animal coming further up the trail. When I saw that a deer was heading my way, I stood up, grabbed my bow and came to full draw, aiming at the area that it would be stepping into. When the deer stepped out, I saw that it was a young 6 point, so I let down. He walked back and forth, following the drag I had laid down, for about 20 mins and then walked off. I headed out at dark. Monday night I went through all of the camera cards I had pulled, and saw there was a significant amount of daylight activity from both cams that were in the area of the stand I had sat in that day. I checked the weather for Tuesday and decided I was going right back there the next morning. Tuesday morning I went to my stand and got settled in. Right after sunrise I saw a nice buck cruising through about 100 yards out. I grunted at him but he paid me no attention. An hour or so after that, 4 nice turkeys (3 jakes and 1 tom) walked through at 10 yards. I was kinda bummed that turkey had closed a few days prior, because I could have easily taken any of them. Through the afternoon things were very slow, but I stayed right where I was. At around 3:30 I saw some does working their way through the timber around 90 or 100 yards away, so I got my bow off the hanger and laid it on my lap watching to see if the does would head my way. About a half hour later I heard a deer walking behind me and to my right. I watched and saw the deer emerge from the brush. I saw the rack and as soon as he got behind some trees I stood up and got turned. He stopped and sniffed the air, curling his lip. I looked at the body and knew he was a shooter. I drew as he got behind some trees and aimed for a shooting lane. As he entered the lane I knew he was at 40 yards so I grunted to stop him, settled my pin behind his shoulder and punched the trigger. I watched the lighted knock fly down the shooting lane, through the trees and hit him right where I aimed, just behind the shoulder about 1/3 of the way up from his belly. He bolted and I saw the arrow back out of the wound and come out and a huge spray of blood as he turned and ran back the way he had come from. A few seconds after he disappeared I heard a crash and what sounded like kicking. I sat down, shaking like a leaf and called a few people. My hunting buddy called and said he would be there shortly. He got there and we started looking. 5 minutes and a super easy blood trail later I was standing over my buck. He is a 3 1/2 year old that I have many pics and videos of. He's the third biggest buck on the property and I am more than happy with him. My biggest buck with a bow and the oldest I've shot. After I got him gutted and loaded up, I headed to pick up my son and then go vote. When I pulled into the voting location, I got my son out and showed him the deer in the back of the ATV on the trailer. A guy that had pulled in walked up and siad "I have to see too" and climbed up for a look. He complimented me on the deer and we walked into the voting location. When I was at the table getting my card, one of the women at the table whispered to my son "Daddy forgot to take his face paint off", and I laughed, realizing that my face was covered in black paint. We all had a chuckle and voted and headed home. Wednesday I had errands to run, and I stopped by a taxidermist and spoke to him about mounting my buck. I agreed to have him do it, and went home to load up my deer, as he wanted to cape it out himself. I took the deer down there and he caped it out and we loaded it back into my truck. When we got home, my son and I finished skinning it, and then headed inside to make dinner. Dinner was venison heart fajitas, which are mine and my sons favorite deer season treat. It was delicious. Today Im back to work. This weekend, my daughter will be with me, but not my son, so we have all weekend to try and get her a deer. It really would be the frosting on a great bow season to have her get her first deer. We will see.... Some pics... Tuesday morning at dawn walking in... The arrow found while beginning the tracking. Nice red, bubbly blood! The end of the blood trail.... Exit and entrance wounds from the Rage 125 Gr Crossbow head... Pic of the buck hanging in the garage... Skinning the buck with my son... Dinnertime! Trail cam pic of my buck in velvet. Ill dig up more of these later...2 points
