  1. So some of you may remember my excitement this past fall when I got not one, but two bobcats on my trail cameras. IIRC it was about three weeks apart and they definitely looked like different 'cats and only 800 yards (WAG). None of the guys I know in the area have ever seen one or had one on camera and that was pretty neat to me. A friend in the area is a pretty serious trapper and just yesterday we were discussing how cool it'd be if he or his buddy trapped one but obviously you can't target them, it would just be caught in a set for fox or coyote of course. Well, darn the luck, he got one today! After a quick trip back home to get a board with a "V" notch cut in one side of it and round up his buddy to take pics, assist in the release and stand guard (!!) they got the female bobcat out of the trap no worse for wear. She scrambled back and jumped up on an old pallet and sat there, just feet away and watched as my buddy reset the trap! It took about 5 minutes to get things squared away and she sat there the entire time just watching. After they finished up at this set they ventured up the hill to check another set and a red fox was in that one. The funny thing is, yesterday I spent about 3 hours within feet or yards of these two sets, looking for the "right" tree to hang a stand in for next fall's archery hunt! I ran the chain saw for probably 30 minutes while clearing some downed trees as close as 30-40 yards too and had the 4wheeler there also. Obviously bobcats and fox think I smell pretty good!

  6. I'm flippin' the coin right now between .308 and 7-08 as an upgrade to the .243. Something with a little more downrange punch than the varmint/furbearer rig but still in the short-action family. I have dies and an assortment of bullets for the .308, but the 7-08 intrigues me. Thoughts? Not trying to derail the thread here. More like keep it going.

  10. About a month ago I asked if anyone had a used swisher for sale. Well I took people's advice and bought a brand new D&R. Expensive yes but it's a beast. Had Victor Power supply order it for me. Basically it would cut anything we could run over. There was times we had the track grizzly complete suspended in the air on top of saplings and it still did the job. I had bought the heavier blades and had the shop switch them out before I picked it up. Only issue we had was the power switch cord mounted to the atv snapped getting hung up so we ended up mounting it on the machine itself

  12. Went down to Canadice yesterday morning. I had a couple stops to make on the way down and then was just going to grab camera cards/swap out batteries and then mooch around in the woods for a bit, going places I'd never go in the fall. Well, I just was enjoying the heck out of the day and decided to take a BIG walk, it seemed to be the right thing to do! About three hours later I had circled back to the truck and was pretty much wiped out. Enough uphill/downhill and gullies for me for the day! While hiking I was keeping my eyes pealed for sheds and of course never found a single hunk of bone. On the way back to my friends house I was talking with another friend and bitching about not finding any sheds. I pulled in my buds driveway and looked in the pasture and lo and behold there's a shed, about 50-60 yards off the driveway. I hit the binders and jumped out, sprinted (not really) to the horn. Bingo, it's been a few years since I've found one so I was pumped. I pulled in and showed my buddy. We talked for a bit and I said I was going to jump on the 4wheeler and go grab two other cam cards but first take a quick spin around the area in the rest of the field to see if I could find the other horn from the buck. Don't you know that within 30 seconds I spot the darn thing up on the dike of the pond. I have and will load tomorrow night trail cam footage of the buck with headgear attached. As I found the first one........ This morning, both together................

  17. Actually, as I understood it, the topic was about deer reactions to dogs, and how that might impact deer hunting and established and scouted out deer patterns. I think that in that context, how deer react to the presence of dogs (any dogs) is exactly on-topic. I also believe that the deer's local experiences with chasing dogs and/or chasing coyotes may also impact the deer's escape reactions when dogs are encountered (Even nice deer-friendly coon hounds) that might alter significantly the results of that study. It is an important aspect that they didn't consider. And again, a discussion of the role of coyotes could very well be exactly on topic as well, because that wrinkle to the deer's world was not studied in terms of how goosey deer can get regarding the intrusion of dogs. Whatever else that moved into the discussion may simply be the normal topic drift that occurs when a topic has been around too long. Threads do have a natural movement to them that is absolutely understandable to a certain extent.

  19. I had a 14 ft and a 12 ft pythons. They are a amazing predator and are a good match for gators. Depending on which one is larger will usually depend on which one gets eaten. You would think the gator would win hands down but that is not always the case. They should be eliminated from Florida, they are dangerous and they get big, over 20 ft easy! Here is one you would think the gator would eat him with no problem, not a very large snake but the results are evident. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfYAj1k9uZM

  21. Well I took a class on forge welding last night. It was only about 3 hours after the instruction and the demonstration part ate up some of that. We were making a flux spoon to take home to use when the students forge weld. Flux that we used was borax. We started out with a piece of 1/4" round and a 20" piece of 3/8" square. Cut the round into fourths and folded them in to make a bundle. forge welded the two ends and drew down to 3/8". Then welded the bundle onto the end of the square stock. twisted and then untwisted the bundle to give it the open look and drew out the hook on the handle. On the opposite end we partial cut and folded back about 1-1/2" of the 3/8" and welded it to itself. Then drew out and shaped the spoon bowl. Sounded pretty easy, huh? LMAO We ran out of time so I still have some straightening and cleaning to do for the finished product but pretty pleased with how the welds came out and how well they held. Probably won't be counting on this process with a MIG welder over at my buddy's house, but it is nice to know and how to do it. Wednesday night is a class on tenons and riveting.

  22. You're really splitting hairs with this one. If I didn't own a 308 I wouldn't own a 7-08. The only reasons are versatility and availability even as a handloader having the ability to swing by most any shop and them have some 308's is a fact that can't be overlooked. Basllisticaly they are so similar that I am surprised the 7mm-08 is as popular as it is. All this being said there is something magical about the way the little 7-08 kills critters and to do it in light little rifles with an absence of recoil makes it one of my top 3 favorite deer cartridges.

  23. The lack of help this administration is willing to give is shown again, They negotiated the prisoner exchange and 1.7 billion for A few Americans then leave at least one still over there, The fact that Democrats and liberals have no balls and are making this country appear weak, Is the real problem, So far i truly believe this country can not last another term under the current idiocy that we call our government, Its a scary thing when they openly negotiate with terrorists and foreign governments, Then show time and time again that they will not back Americans with force if needed, The corruption and fear these people demonstrate is whats making the people of this country targets, They no longer fear the U.S.A they all think we are jokes and it needs to end,

  27. Okay.. enough with just humoring you... you do understand that the alpha male in any family group will not allow for another alpha on the same "piece of turf"... so there will only be one family on that turf... there may however be a few rogue males displaced from their place of birth that might challenge the alpha on occasion and pass through a territory, but there will not be more than one family... you not knowing that would explain your delusion about overpopulations of coyotes... I'm sure to you a population of 1 coyote might be considered too many for a piece of property... but by definition overpopulation is only when there is more than the habitat can sustain... and I am confident that there has been no evidence of that ever occurring with coyotes anywhere in NY State... nor has there ever been any documented cases of dogs decimating every living animal in a 1000 acre piece of land anywhere in NY... or running every animal clear out of any habitat in NY. Your hatred for coyotes has skewed you thinking and created your delusions, but you are entitled to that hatred and those delusions even if they aren't reality.

  29. "All that is necessary to understand the rabid efforts to disarm law-abiding American citizen gun owners is to realize that liberal gun control efforts have nothing to do with child safety, nothing to do with public safety, nothing to do with safety of anybody, or anything of the kind. Liberal gun control is about one thing, and one thing only. That one thing is the liberal/socialist's need to disarm those who would resist, thus impede, their ability to implement the socialist, centralized, big government, cradle to grave, control of people, who, in the liberal elite's opinion, are not smart enough to make the important decisions necessary to take care of themselves. The only thing preventing Obama (and ilk), from imposing their vision of the socialist, sunshine, unicorn, and rainbow utopia upon America is that they have been unable to disarm 150-200 million Americans of some many more millions of firearms. Additionally, neither have these socialist elites been successful at dissuading these 150-200 million law-abiding, citizen, firearm owning citizens from standing/fighting/dying for the principles in which they believe." 31. In reference to the "people here", there is a huge difference between being some person behind a computer screen saying you agree or disagree with how people make a stance for what they believe in and actually going out and committing a crime in that same stance of belief. I am willing to bet every person that has posted in this thread has an opinion for or against some law or regulation that has a direct impact on their lives, but none of them have gone out and committed a crime completely unrelated to the original law or regulation in an effort to make a stance against the government. If the Bundys had performed a legal protest, even one that lasted days, weeks or months I personally may not agree with their position but I would absolutely respect their right to make their stance. What they are doing is in no way legal and the very essence of what they are doing hinders others who don't wish to be involved in the situation to begin with. Making a stance against the government should NOT force others to get involved against their wishes. People with property bordering the federal land, as well as people who used the federal land for recreation are not allowed to use that land because of its current occupation. That is forcing people who were previously not involved in the Bundys "protest" to now be affected by it.

  33. I don't have any experience with that light specifically but just keep in mind that brightest isn't always best. An animal can spook no matter what color light if you "burn" them with the bright beam. If you pick up eyes, move the beam upward so that you are using the very outside portion.

  38. the 3 duck ponds are 2.5' at their deepest. banks separating them just tall enough so waterfowl can't see any others in any of the other ponds. so many duck boxes per pond. etc. I know of some that have an outlet for vernal pools off a main pond. stone wall leech separating the two. vernal pond so shallow that every so often you drag it in spots like a farmer lays out strip crop fields to have growth start over. our game fish pond was pretty much one but then we decided it'd be a good spot for a bigger and deeper pond. bottom composition I think is important depending on what you want out of a vernal pond I've been told. a lot to building ponds and a lot of it is beyond my knowledge.

  39. Of even more interest is that tracked arrangement on the ATV. Is there any kind of riding condition that could stop that thing? Does that thing ride on snow ok? It looks like it should get up on snow as good as any snowmobile. How is that thing for steering? I have seen these kinds of rigs in ads someplace, but I never knew anyone who actually owned one. Now I have to relook at your pictures and take a look at the brush cutter....ha...ha. I couldn't get my eyes off that ATV monster.

  43. I think this attitude about the quality of the hunt and some of the aesthetic requirements of the act of hunting, is in the minority, but I do share those in those requirements when it comes to my hunting. For me there is an atmosphere that has to exist before I enjoy a hunt. I couple the activity to a sense of history and tradition, and the kill is secondary to the authenticity of the experience. I don't like to hear neighbors arguing in the background. I don't like hearing radios and TVs blaring. I don't want to see a neighbor walking about in his pajamas to pick up the morning paper.....lol. Also, knowing that deer almost never fall down dead where shot with an arrow. I do worry about ugly situations of bloody deer dying in some rather intrusive places. I am concerned about uncomfortable confrontations with irate parents when the deer drops in a neighbor-kids sandbox. I am not really all that fond of making my hunting a public spectacle. I have no problem with those that do, but it just is not my thing.

  44. The question is, why wasn't help sent, to these people who were pleading for it? There were assets well within striking distance and even a drone flying over the area. So who decided not to send help and why?? Was it the Republicans? who said "no we're not spending money to save them" was it Dick Chaney? was it Bush? Was it Reagan's ghost? We all know that the current administration and Hilary had absolutely no control over sending help, so who decided to pull the plug on it?? I bet Halliburton was in on it LOL!! …….What a F'ing joke and what an absolute F'ing disgrace.

  45. You have noticed many of my spots I have been setting up, are rather close to the house...barns ect...Also I have talked and shown pics I have taken of the deer feeding and bedding right next to the dogs kennel and our deck...I have mention it is the coyotes activity that has moved the deer closer to the house and next to the kennel/run...They have gotten very use to the boys barking and smell...our activity here and they do know it's a safe zone from the coyotes that are bothered by the dogs..I have taken pics and posted here of two buck fighting 15 yrds off the side of the kennel run. Most of my best buck pics I have taken right off our deck as they walk past the kennel and me..mature buck.
