I've been thinking about this ever since I took my Archery class two years ago. Let's just say that instruction program left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if I can do a better job or not, but I guess I will find out. I've spoken to two different former instructors and gotten some feedback from them too (not overwhelmingly good). So I am going in with eyes open. I do have some experience teaching and have been hunting for almost 30 years, so hopefully I can help get a few more hunters into our ranks. I'd love to hear from others on their experiences as instructors. @grampy I think you mentioned you are or were an instructor?22 points

Tears . Can barely type these words. Daughter in leadership academy. Here’s the scenario: I and two other students ran the annual cookie marathon where we had student volunteers bake and package around 5,000 cookies in the cafeteria. They were distributed at the day of giving at the Lancaster youth bureau where families in need come to pick up food, presents, and trees for Christmas. A classmate teaches little kids at a dance studio, and a little girl came in all happy to give cookies to her and another teacher. The classmate recognized the cookies and packaging and knew that those were the ones we baked20 points

Just signed in . I felt like I got stabbed in the back by a couple members and took time time away from the sight to relax and enjoy life . Spent time time hunting and managed not to fill any of my Deer Tags . Spent a lot of time freezing my feet and butt though . Made it to a friend's wake and two funerals . Also attended some of my grandkid's plays , concerts and B'day parties . Took my wife to the Auditorium Theater to see the Platters , Coasters and Drifters . Only the bass singer from the Coaster was one of the originals . However , all 3 groups did a great job and brought back memories . OOPS , sorry , I thought I was typing this into my Diary .20 points

Usually when I clear the driveway and have the wet heavy snow it clogs up the chute . I saw a suggestion about spraying the chute with Rain-Ex . Since I didn't have any , I sprayed the snow blower chute with ArmorAll . Boy , did that do the trick ! Never clogged once when I got into the wet stuff at the end of the drive way . Give it a try .8 points

Still seasons for predators and a bunch of small game. I'll still be going out chasing tree rats. If for nothing more then the serenity of being in the woods gives me.4 points

So got my first ever hang on stand up yesterday, alone. Wasn't as challenging as anticipated. Gonna take a little getting used to tho. I am accustomed to the arm rests and shooting rail on my climber so felt a bit exposed. 1st sit in it will be Saturday morning. Got it set up atop a ridge with a well walked trail leading to bedding. Hoping to run into the nice 8 I saw there last time. Hero or Zero, either way will let you know. At this stage of the game, fork being finicky. ANYTHING that presents a shot is in for a bad day.4 points

Great year for experience, ok from a take perspective. Moved in the middle of the season that threw a monkey wrench into plans. Took two plump does on back to back days during bow. Straight through the heart for the second one, fastest pileup I have ever seen. Passed a fair amount of young bucks. Had three encounters with the mature buck I was chasing on my property. One was after legal shooting hours working a scrape and bossing around a spike. Another he had a choice of going right or left (towards me) and chose the right path for him and the wrong for me. Called him in for the final encounter. Needed him to take one more step to get a shot that he never did. Eventually he realized no doe was there and boogied off. Never saw him live after that. Freezer is somewhat full with the two does and leftover fish from the summer. Would have love to take a buck to top it off, but I would take those encounters over punching a tag on a young buck any season. Heart still races thinking about it. Season died off after firearms season started, which is typical for my area (close to the city and lots of pressure). Saw a few young does and that was about it. All the young bucks I passed are probably in someone else's freezer. I hunt solo, don't know anyone else that hunts in my circle of friends or family, and just want to say it is a pleasure to share the woods on this forum with other like minded people for the Fall. Merry Christmas to all and see you for the turkey opener. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk4 points

Yes, I am a current NYS Hunter Ed Instructor. I started to think about becoming an instructor when I sat through the firearms, and then the bow course with my grandson, at a local sportsmans club. I thought the way it was presented, and the instructors there were very good! And I encourage all the long time hunters to bring a young hunter, and sit through the course! I know I learned a couple things, when I did it!! I was asked by the club, to come in and do a Deersearch presentation, which I was happy to do. As I've been a long time member, and tracker/handler. Afterwards, was approached by a couple of the hunter ed instructors, who said they thought I would be a good fit to help, as there are never enough instructors. So I said sign me up! The first step is to become an apprentice. There is a VERY long list of things to do, to be certified, and it took me about a year to complete the apprenticeship. If you go to NYSDEC, and type becoming a hunting instructor, that will get you started. Much easier to do it through a hunt club or an organization. You will need to have an FBI background check. A visit from, and an interview done by a DEC officer. As well as an online course. And a day long course done at a DEC HQ. Along with the many hours during the apprenticeship, of learning, observing and teaching, every part of the course curriculum, to actual classes of students. All while being mentored by a Senior Instructor. There is always a need for more instructors!! Especially younger ones!! As most all of us are older. It really is one of the most rewarding things I've done, to try and "give back". To something that has given me so much in my lifetime. And well worth the effort of becoming an instructor. I wish you good luck! And if there is anything I can do to help you, just PM me anytime!3 points

Honestly, I really can't tell you how well the soybeans grew because they never got big enough for me to say, hey the beans are coming in. I suspect that as soon as leaves came in, they were eaten at the same time brassicas were being browsed. (second time that happened as we tried beans once before and they were gone before I noticed any real growth) The brassicas were also mowed down from the start but they grow fast with large leaves and tolerated the pressure through the whole season, to the point that the deer were still pulling roots/bulbs late season. The only way I would plant beans again is if I have some way of locking out the deer until the plants grew (electric fence?). This whole plot is less than an acre so your results may vary. I may rotate this year to clover with oats or wheat mixed in later. Then back to brassicas in 2021. 2018, my other property (which had corn and winter wheat fields adjacent), the brassicas were not touched until post season. So this year, I only did clover there which worked great until early November. Again, I may drop some wheat/oats in this year along with clover. Either deer in Caledonia hate brassicas or its simply not a preferred source when compared to the fields of beans/wheat and corn that are usually located around it.3 points

I was involved in a discussion about car insurance and discounts offered for various things, like taking a safe driver course. A man suggested deer hunters should get a 1 year discount if they bag a deer during hunting season, reason being high deer populations wreck many auto's and insurance companies have to pay. This might also be a good incentive for people to take up deer hunting as well. I laughed at first, but the more I think about it, the more I think it would be a great idea. So many things the insurance companies give discounts for are really not preventing auto collisions. This idea really does.3 points

A tip that I just got this year is to lay the sausage out on a tray and partially freeze them before vacuum packing. It will stop the casing from opening up and will stop them from sticking together when thawing them out.2 points

in that case i'm sure jason would prefer that you only hunt in their immediate area. if you can keep one of them in your coat for the recovery even better.2 points

I'd like to get a few sits in for predators, and I'll do a bit of squirrel hunting. Then of course there's shed hunting in April, turkey in May, bass fishing in June... Sounds corny, but I really do love NY!2 points
