  2. 30 acres next mountain top from Swain ski center. Borders 1300 acres State forest plus buddy owns 25 acres next to me. Has three pond which I've stocked with fish, big boy aquarium . Two creeks, one stream and springs all over the place. Mostly hardwoods but I do have a large string of pines planted during CCC days. It took me forever to find place because my maximum distance from Rochester could be over an hour commute as I'm I call 24/7. Started with weekender cabin but my property surrounded a very nice log home. Financially NY has to be one of the stupidest places to retire but all our friends and family are here. We ended up buying log home and that's where I will spend my final days. Smart move as I could (but won't) sell it for double what I paid Log home has come in handy as my wife has been living there since March. She can do her job no issue remotely. I did get DSL run to cabin. A whooping 6mbps but it works. I've been essential since beginning of pandemic. We make a unique optic that used in analyzers to detect and fight virus. I'm the facilities engineer and manager. I live in city house five days a week and see her and the dogs on weekends. People ask me if my wife is afraid being alone that deep in woods. Let's see, she got the dogs, she's a redhead and she's armed to the teeth. Anyone messes with that holy trinity is going to regret it. I've yet to start managing the land very little of it is open field. I did clear an area to put up a pole barn and that almost killed me. I had to drop 30 trees that were more than 30 feet tall. Donated a little piece of my thumb to project. I do plant DEC trees and bushes to add varieties and flowers for birds. Deer, turkey, fox everywhere. And those dam ruffle grouse screw me up every time. They almost let you step on them before they pop up. We have Battle Royale hummingbirds at feeders half the year. When I'm at this property, nothing bothers me. I retire in a month and a half. The woods has always been my escape and church. Grew up a suburb kid that backpacked every chance I got.

  3. I was worried the stream would be blown out from snowmelt but it was actually low, perfect conditions. I caught three rainbows and one little brown. My buddy got a great brown for that creek. WE ARE ON TO MARCH Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  5. Here are a few pictures. The only thing I actually insulated was 20 ft of exterior wall (with 6" fiberglass). That section is mostly under the porch shown in the first photo. The "heated" 20' x 12' woodshop (3rd photo) has an 8 ft ceiling (hay loft), with 1" chestnut boards covered by 5/8" OSB. It took that little propane heater, set on high, about 1/2 hour to raise the temp from 35 to 55 this morning. It was holding it comfortably there, set on low. The 10' x 12' metal shop (2nd photo) is also under the hay loft, in the NW corner of the building. The man door under the porch enters that shop. The framing for those interior shops and the loft is reclaimed timbers from my great great grandfathers old barn.

  7. Usually, I prefer outside winter sports on weekends in February, but mud season has arrived a bit early this year. Too rainy and windy for squirrel hunting. I may get out, on the last day tomorrow, if the weather cooperates. Today, I am making a couple larger platform stands to replace a small hang-on, over at my folks place, and a small metal ladder stand, out back here at home. I had enough leftover pressure treated framing lumber and maintenance free decking, up on my hay loft, to make them each 42" square. Each will get 3 foot barnwood sided walls, after I get them up about 7 feet. They will get lag bolted to the trees, and a couple pressure treated 4 × 4's for front support. Those won't become available, until I use up a little more firewood, which is stacked up outside on them. Each of the stands I am replacing is too small for comfort and lack good shooting rails. These new stands should greatly improve my range capability, thanks to the 3 ft wall/rest, and make for a more comfortable, longer lasting hunt.

  11. Building trades has plenty of guys with a record. Some decent who made a wrong turn, some who should not have been let out. Seen it all in over 30 years at it. Biggest skill is manage to show up on time, and stay off your cell phone. Both of those are unbelievably difficult for most. And then they complain about wages and not getting a raise, but that's a different topic.

  12. Jail time is not a debt to society, jail time is a “timeout” out of society after proving one is incapable of being a part of it. A jail/prison sentence doesn’t mean change, it instills change but it’s up the individual to bring that change to the outside. Some do/will others never will. There are many, many, too many programs to assist cons in getting jobs once they do their time. If someone chooses not to take advantage of it they’re probably not smart enough to stay out of prison anyways. It’s not legal for most employers to ask if you have a felony unless it’s a sex offense. However a large gap in employment usually is a dead giveaway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. I think that is my newest drill. I remember my grandfather buying it, around 1980. I have a couple of hand crank ones, that might be from the 1800's, and a couple other much older, metal electric ones, which might be from the 1940's or 50's. I can't stand battery operated drills, although I will admit that my father in law's Dewalt worked well on an ice augers last weekend. He knew enough to bring the batteries in the house to warm up before I needed it this year. Last year, they were all outside in the cold and I had to use my old hand crank auger. The rain stopped now, and I am out on a stand waiting on the squirrels. It is warm enough, but still a bit windy. It was nice to see my folks anyhow. Ma has soup for supper, and with some luck, it might have crock pot squirrel for lunch tomorrow.

  19. Inmate rights is an interesting topic that is inconsistently applied. They take away their right to vote but allow other rights to apply. Makes no sense to me. Inmates either have rights or have their rights suspended during incarceration. I also think they should have all their rights restored after paying their debt to society.

  25. Most of mine are muzzle down in my safe; some in socks and some not. If they fall out when the door opens it only means they weren't put in correctly, pretty simple.

  28. I lease from cotton hanlon and have had positive experiences. First year had a few trespassing but caught them on camera. Talked with Bob at the time, and got permission to put a cable up on the powerline part. Also confronted a few that were caught. I found out who the trespassers were and went to their home to address the situation. I stayed civil but firm about not being allowed on the property. Once confronted, have not had issues since. I now live next to the land too so that may help. I would recommend leasing from cotton hanlon. I am allowed to use their land all year long with minimum restrictions. If I am not sure if something can be done I call and ask. Always quick to respond back to me. I have always dealt with Bob but now since Brad took over as chief forester, hope to have the same positive experiences.

  35. Kinda an iffy area. Drum is totally fenced in that area. Our farm is prob 5 miles from there as the crow flies but our 900 acres is directly across from the non fenced area of Drum. It keeps the woods and waters well stocked year around. Add in the 500 acres of corn and beans and it turns itself into sweetness.

  37. He doesnt have to prove anything. After serving his time his debt to society is paid off, that is the idea behind the jailtime,is it not? He should not be discriminated against because of his bad choices years ago.

  41. Ok,here we go. I think a president should set a good example for everybody,at the least be civil and decent, you know lead by example. Obama checked those for me,Trump failed all three. Obama actually is smart where Trump wants to appear smart. That leads to the fact that as a leader you should surround yourself with the most qualified people in their respective areas and listen to their input as they are the experts. Obama did that,Trump tried to be the smartest person in the room. Chlorox as a covid cure anyone? Or light from inside the body? I guess it is mainly about character and honesty for me. Trump lied about the dumbest shit because he needs to appear great. The inauguration crowd? Stormy Daniels? Talking about grabbing women by the pussy? In my opinion Trump is a complete fraud who only got to where he is by starting out rich and bullying and playing people and the system. He had some smarts in that area. I dont hate Trump by the way,a looser like that doesnt deserve that deep of a feeling, plus it is not good for oneself to be hating. Trump was the big divider, his way or the highway. Did anyone fire more of his staff? I was very glad to have Obama at the helm when the great recession hit. I think that was handled pretty well. I also think in general Obama's speeches were more about hope and positive things where Trumps were more combative. I dont think admitting that America is not perfect is acceptable,no country or person is. To pretend the opposite is delusional and counterproductive. As far as policies go i think Obama tried to work with other leaders where Trump just tried to dominate. I dont know about you guys, but i know who i would rather deal with. What is truly amazing to me is that so many people were willing to look past all of Trumps flaws and mis-steps and to follow him blindly. Can anyine explain that to me? You may agree with his politics, but as a critically thinking person how can you not see what a malicious doofus he is? I am not excited about Biden by the way,I wish Bernie had gotten thw nomination. Here is a politician that has stood by his principles forever.
