DMP permitting = BS!!!!

The AR program is at best 50/50.  We are not seeing the big PA 8 and 10's at 4 yrs.  At best basket 6's.  We just don't have the mix of genetics and nutrition.  Plus the yote's are a disaster.  The regional biologists are clueless on doe populations as well.  They rely on mail in surveys that I don't even bother filling out anymore.

no matter where you go the biologists seem to spend their days screwing us over.

we used to have unlimited whitetail tags here but now we have unlimited doe/fawn tags Overall, BUT now we are limited to 20 tags per person per unit.

WTH.

and AND I need to buy tags at $22 each to shoot whitetails. This used to be a depredation tag unlimited, so no matter where you go the biologists will stick it to you with DMPs. we can't win.

The Catskills region is honestly a waste of time to hunt during gun season.  Between antler restrictions and the lack of doe tags there isn't much left that is legal to shoot at.

This is what I was afraid of whenever the subject of antler restrictions comes up. The situation described here is basically telling hunters that you will not hunt this year. That is a situation guaranteed to lose even more hunters.

The group I hunt with in 4W has zero chance of getting doe tags this year, and antler restrictions to boot, so the odds of getting a deer are pretty slim up there during the regular season in the limited time we have to go....now I don't need to kill a deer to survive, but then again I don't need to drive 4 hours each way and spend the money it costs to travel and the other expenses involved. I can now stay at home on Long Island and have better opportunities without the added travel and cost.

I wonder if they realize how much some of these changes have hurt the economy in some areas, before the change of opening day to a Monday, and the drastic changes to deer regulations, the local businesses used to do very well during that time of year ....used to be supermarkets, restaurants, and other businesses would be packed to the gills during that time of year, now it's virtually a ghost town. I'm well aware there are other factors and this doesn't hold true for everywhere, but from what I've seen in some areas it's not good at all........now I go to enjoy the scenery and relax, certainly not going to start driving all over the State to look for a new place to hunt hours away from our house up there just to kill a deer when I can do it 15 minutes from my front door.

You know I always found this interesting, I both bow hunt and gun hunt in 4H, now some years (most years) I get denied the doe permit for that area, however every single season, if I want, I can shoot a doe with my bow in that area, just seems a little ridiculous how they come down on gun hunters and not the whole hunting community

and I have no doubt that many of these new regulations have helped prematurely age people out of hunting.........the hunters who were barely able to get into the woods to hunt, but did it anyway with the hopes of getting a doe or any buck, are now saying screw it and totally giving up....

I too hunt 4-H and lucky to draw a DMP every 3 years! Do get a landowner permit, but always try to hold onto that to hunt through the season, for four of us. If I want a doe, its shoot one during early archery season, or not at all it seems. Tough when the weather is so warm, and time is so scarce, do to early season obligations. Thing is, cars are killing more doe in this area than hunters!

I own land in 5T and as a landowner and a disabled vet I still have 0 chance of getting a dmp. You can drive around the block and see 50 deer and 45 are does but zero dmp's. Having spoke to a buck of neighbors they are all getting permits for the neiboring wmu and using that tag. It's sad the second is making outlaws out of honest people but it is beyond ridiculous!

I hear this constantly.  I fully believe NYS doesn't care about hunters or if people stop hunting.  It's a Anti gun anti hunting state.  The more people the state can get to stop hunting the more they hope they get rid of there guns.

I hunt 4u.  Most of the land is owned by  Citi it's that are anti hunters.  Yet they bitch that there plants got mowed down by deer during the winter and something has to be done.  Anything except killing Bambi that is.

Drive the back roads and you'll see a boat load of does, yet 0% chance of doe tags.

i hunt 4h and 4r oak hill and durham area in oak hill we took a ride and seen more does than you can count but didnt get a dmp tag i got one for 4r but with a pp from last year. it seems that they  give them out like candy in suburban areas where its difficult to find a place to hunt. you know if we complain they say oh well we'll go back to the old way like in the 60's and 70's with the party permit system . somethings they do are good like being able to transfer or swap dmp tags. but its really frustrating not getting one with the pp and seeing only does or small bucks.its the same with salt water regs it seems they use it more as a way to control hunters  than a conservation tool

The property I hunt borders 4H and 4R ( Rte. 145 runs through it ) and its amazing how far they can run after being shot .... all the way from one DMP area to another and Vice-Verse !  Unfortunately both areas need PP's from last year !

How can anyone go into get a DMP and not know how many are being issued and the odds for the WMU’s you’re applying for. You should be looking at the hunting forecast for that WMU. The DEC puts out the hunting forecast for the states WMU’s every year. The DEC has to manage the whole WMU not just your little part of deer heaven.

I hunt 9p they are giving out 1800 dmp’s in this unit you need P Points to get a chance at a dmp. I see all kinds of doe’s where I hunt. The reason why I see all kinds of does is I hunt the northern part of the wmu that has lot of agriculture and is up against wmu 8m. So they can’t just manage for my part of the wmu they have to manage the whole thing so quit whining and go hunting or change where you hunt. Does that mean the DEC DOESN’T make mistakes in forecast and in planning of course not?

would the lack of dmp's and ARs eventually turn that around? Not familiar with the deer in that area.

That is what everyone said when AR's went in but there has been no increase in DMP. One of our spots in 4S is exactly the same, tons of doe and no permits for years now. So much so that I have stopped hunting there, I don't hunt there for the bucks. There are bucks sure but for the most part its not what I am looking for and the farmer is looking for doe taken out. He has to get damage permits if he wants that done or fence it all in.

seems like the state needs to work on the ratio. start allowing more dmp's and keeping the ar's for a while. Don't open the flood gates but at least improve the odds.
