  1. An acquaintance of mine in Ohio set out to capture a solid deer/fireworks shot during July 4th weekend. Actually, a small group of us discussed how to best get this done, and a few of the people were on properties where there was a chance to see fireworks in the background. With some discussion they set up accordingly. One ended up with a nice sequence of about 7-8 shots of this buck with fireworks in it. Pretty good trail cam capture.

  2. Point is John 95% of what is posted in that section has nothing to do with Hunting/outdoor news. Your house - your rules. But it was a lot better place before the stench started rising out of the basement - and I am not the only one that feels that way.

  3. Had a business trip to Kansas City this week and drove through Springfield. The 4 of us determined there was no way we could pass it up and it did not disappoint. I'm told it's the largest one in the country but I can't verify that. The place is home to an NRA firearm museum and Archery Hall of Fame. If you're ever near the place make some time to go in. You could easily spend a day there and your little ones wouldn't get bored.

  4. 6:12 PM. Hit the bookmark for the HUNTING NY forum. Landing page with "Recent Topics" has 8 threads. 6 of them from the Political section with 2 posters having all the last posts - and probably 75% of the total posts in the threads. This used to be a place for hunting and outdoor activities in NY. Not sure what it is now.

  5. I have to be honest about this topic, I used to say the same "if you dont like it dont open it" thing as some, but thats back when the political posts used to USUALLY have something to do with hunting, gun rights or conservation. In the last 9 to 12 months, things took a turn on here, and my opinion has changed a bit. I dont hardly go into any of the political threads anymore, and its gotten tiresome trying to keep any kind of order around here, even with the extremely loose rules. I dont have nearly as much time to be on here anymore, and I like to read the threads and whatnot, not babysit, edit posts and slap hands all the time. Im annoyed by it alot of the time anymore really. Just my 2 cents

  6. I won't have resident status until one month after moose season this year, but the salmon runs are now coming on strong now, and I am taking time away from work and school papers long enough to go this Sunday. If I can get some time tomorrow I'll try to post a couple of pics of the brown bears taken this year on the Peninsula. The husband of one of the nurses at our clinic took a 9 1/2 foot brown bear. There were several other similar sized taken within a few miles of where I live now. Huge! What also takes getting used to is the moose walking around and through town. I mean right in the neighborhoods! It really is an interesting place. Best wishes from Soldotna, Alaska

  7. I've been dreaming of a plains game hunt, Alaskan sheep hunt and a grizzly hunt for years. I recently started a seperate savings account to try and make one of them happen.

  8. Now this is a typical response. You have no idea of what my politics are. Majority of conservative living people do not spend their entire day searching for cut and paste conspiracies to justify their tin foil budget. Maybe get your Dad to let some fresh air in your basement.

  9. Hiked a quick 5 mile loop in Mt Taurus near Cold Springs yesterday. Took the steep climb up and the long way down. Views at the top were spectacular even on a cloudy day. Saw tons of frogs. At the end of the loop are the ruin remains of an mansion. Limited to a 105mm lens and I don't have his ninja skills to get that close to animals, my wildlife photography is simply not up too wooly's standards.

  10. Met up with a buddy of mine. He is originally from Rochester and he now works down in Atlanta for me. He brought me up some gator tail from a 9 ft gator he got this past year. He also brought me a couple wild hog shoulders and a loin from a hog he got a couple weeks ago. Man I chunked up that gator tail soaked it in cold milk for an hour and dropped it in flour mixed with Cajun seasoning and deep fried. Dang that was some good stuff!!

  11. In all honesty, it makes no difference to me what political affiliation another hunter has, if we can share information and ideas about hunting. It also would not matter to me if they were gay, black, white, green or blue. I am always open to sharing or getting hunting, fishing or any outdoors activity, information. This is a great place to do that, with quite a few like minded people. I do have my own political views, likes and dislikes. And so does every individual that visits this site. Am I naive enough to believe that I could change someone else's views or have someone change mine on a hunting forum? Not likely.

  12. You're missing the bigger picture of what this site will look like to new members. I understand that the traffic and posts are good for the site in the off season, but the place looks like a bunch of right wing nut jobs. I've never seen anything like it on any site and that includes the very conservative southern hunting boards

  14. My nephews cam was out ten days close to 900 pics, the date is off this is right near Nashville you can see his housing track in the background of some of the pics. He said he had a lot more bucks to many to send here's a few of the ones he did.

  15. Even in the off season, I find quite a bit of interesting topics, like shed hunting, trail cam pic's, food plots and gardens, fishing, camping, shooting of all types of hunting implements, talking about past and future hunts and a good deal of all around outdoor stuff. These are the topics that I find most interesting on this forum! I also think the vast majority of the people who visit here feel the same. And I think this site is strong with the support of said people, and not going anywhere!

  21. What is overrun? Those forum categories are these specifically for just that type of discussion. If you don't like it don't participate in those threads, its simple really. I don't enjoy every single post on this site and don't expect anyone else to either. With that said, I do agree I rather that not be the focus of the recent topics for guests / new members as some of you have pointed out, I'll see if I can exclude that by default.

  22. The thing is .... you don't have to read the political posts . You see a post that's political , bypass it . I choose not to open a lot of posts unless there is a problem or complaint about one . I guess the political posts don't bother me because I see so many of them on FaceBook . When Deer Season opens , there will be a lot more interesting posts .

  23. I may be mistaken, but I think you posted some pictures of the ones you did for your groomsmen awhile back. If I remember correctly, they were very nicely done. And I really like your new design, and think these will come out to be just as nice, or even better. Have fun and please post pic's of the finished knives! Or even a step by step series of pic's would be cool!

  25. What about the scumbag illegal who was deported 5 times and came back a 6th time and murdered the girl in San Francisco? Is that just an unfortunate incident? And now taxpayers will be paying his 3 hots and a cot and legal fees. Your pathetic if you support illegal immigration. Supporting illegal immigration is supporting rapists , murders and scumbags also.

  29. There is a difference between tolerance and promotion. Apparently the people who run our schools are having problems distinguishing between the two. Our school system should not be involved in promotion of any style of sexual activity, homosexual or hetero sexual or any other kind of sexual. My gosh when did our school system become some kind of sex forum for adolescents? This must be another one of those "progressive" changes that have occurred over the decades.

  30. For black bear in NY state the .30/06 is more than adequate. Even on Western grizzlies, it would be more appropriately sized than a .22/250 on deer. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the .30/06 has killed more of each bear species than any other caliber. I wish you well with your deer hunting this fall whichever rifle you choose. Confidence and bullet placement are more important than impact energy, and it sounds like you got that covered pretty good with the .22/250. How are you going to feel though if you are holding it when the biggest buck of your life shows you his front shoulder at a 300 yard range? Your 308 would put him down there in his tracks while the little 22/250 would likely explode on the shoulder blade sending him off crippled.

  31. Agree. I see none of this on bowsite or monster muleys, etc. it's all hunting and very active about hunting year round. Pics and discussions right now are about scouting or Africa or spring bear hunts etc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  32. Immigration reform is just another way to throw money and resources into the wind. Imo.. untill we get rid if the demand they will come , no matter how high we build the fence or patrol the border.... Local farms are over run with immigrants now.. guess what our population is doing that worked these jobs in the past. Sitting on their @$$ getting welfare and making meth.. Americans are too good these days to do manual labor..

  34. IMO - the subject of sexual relations is best left to be discussed between parent and child. Many parents fail in this regard and perhaps that is why schools felt it necessary to educate children in this area. I don't really object to a basic health class that explains the reproductive process, but pushing beyond that to suggest some things are completely acceptable should be beyond the reach of schools. What might be acceptable to some people is not acceptable to others. This is true in heterosexual relationships also. Do I want a school teacher explaining that certain acts, fetishes, etc are ok because people like them. Nope. Has little to do with heterosexual vs. homosexual. It has everything to do with allowing a parent to parent on appropriate subject matters without interference from schools. I can't tell you how many times I hear my son tell me, "but Dad, my teacher says to do it like this, not your way." They are inclined to listen to these figures of authority. I will accept that on how to solve math problems to some extent (even if I disagree), but this is not a subject where a school agenda should interfere.

  38. The posts in the General Chit Chat Forum don't relate to hunting any more than the posts in the Politics Forum. Nobody is complaining about that forum though. I think the 4 or 5 people on here who are protesting the most aren't upset with the political posts that support their views, as much as they're upset with the ones that oppose them. It angers them to see posts that factually disprove their committed beliefs and opinions to the point they demand they be stopped. If you're worried about outsiders seeing too many political posts, you better ante up and post more hunting stuff. I come on here looking for good hunting stuff too. Unfortunately, I find very little of it, and what I do find is often mundane, uninspiring or not interesting . Even when a good hunting related post is put up, a lot of guys on here like to jump on it by tearing into to OP and arguing with the post, rather than adding to it, or simply staying out of it. They're often just as vile and argumentative as the political posts are. If new people are going to look at this site and leave, it will also be because the hunting posts are not civil and often don't inspire interest. Now, that may annoy many of you guys, but I think it needed to be said. If you're really worried about the future of this site, some of you need to do some real soul searching.

  39. Nice picture- except, almost none of the political threads are related to hunting. They're all the same: anti-liberal, anti-obama, anti-government, anti-anti, 'this country is going down the tubes'....broken records. If the mods are okay with it, that's their business. If we don't like it, we can ignore it; or if it bothers us enough, we can quit visiting the site. Having said that, i agree with the OP.

  41. It would be nice to repeat the Canadian canoe & pack-in moose hunt that I took back in the late 80's. Miles of dirt road to a remote lake. The length of that lake, 150 yard portage and then off to the end of another long lake. Small tent camp on the shore. The only sounds were beavers splashing, moose wallowing around in the swamp across the lake and an occasional branch snapping back in the darkness....lol. There was no one around and no sign of people anywhere. Lot's of walleye and pike to eat from the mid-day fishing. And a bull moose to take home as icing on the cake. Of course that will never happen again .... lol. Getting a bit old to be pulling off anything that strenuous again. But that was my ideal hunt.

  45. I don't know, I've been lucky to do a fair amount of trips out west over the years plus a few in Canada and one in Alaska. The funds just aren't what they were for me when I was self employed. Life's changes are all apart of life and I'll roll with them.... If funds were no object, Africa would be great and maybe a bull moose in western Canada.

  46. If the book explains all about same sex marriage or relationship then why not. Are you going to be comfortable answering question if your child ask? Homosexualality is a thing? What do you mean? I believe either you are or you are not and most know at an early age. Some are curious and like to diddle. Some are bi. No biggie. Gays, lesbians and bisexuals are everywhere and shouldn't have to hide who they are or what they like. When I say explain all about same sex relations I only mean that it is natural for some to like same sex

  47. you need to know the maturity date on your selected brassica seed. if planted too early you have the chance of bolting (going to seed) when this happens it becomes very unpalatable to deer, they will not eat it.

  48. Imo, there are those that definitely shouldn't hunt with a 22 250.. Those same people probably aren't that much better off with an " elephant" gun though...lol... For many , the 22 250 is a perfectly good gun for the job , as long as the proper bullets are used..
