  1. Where I live is a Chipmunk metropolis, they are all over the place and in to everything, my sheds, my vehicles, my lawn equipment, farm tractor, the wife's flower gardens and even in the house sometimes. When you have dogs as do I and especially an Airedale, they are unrelentingly after them wherever they go. I ain't got time to tell of the damage caused around here by the chipmunks and also by the dogs trying to get at them. Anyhow I set myself up with a rig especially for sitting on the front porch and knocking off any Chipmunk that shows itself. A Taurus model 62 22 pump patterned after the old Winchester gallery guns which I can remember shooting at the midway in Sylvan Beach when I was a kid. I made a couple of mods to help with my old eyes, a truglo front sight and a dovetail mounted Skinner peep. Has been working pretty fair so far, I have picked off a dozen or so this week and there are still plenty more from where they came from to go. Al My Taurus

  2. Unless it happens within the last 20 years.... history will soon be history. Instead, these meaningful and important dates to our country will be replaced with new ones... like the anniversary of when you could pee in whatever bathroom you choose.

  6. Sorta on a side note. I've always suspected my dad of 92 was in WW II but never had positive confrimation as he's never talked about it. He has a 30-40 Krag with ramp sights I've thought maybe from the war. I asked my 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters and all were aware but said he declined to ever talk about it. Sorta feel jipped not knowing where he was but NOT going to ask if he's avoided talking about it for 70 years. My sister sent me these pics. Marine ! The only reason I got confirmation was about month ago he was in hospital and nurse asked if he was a veteran and he said "yes".

  9. I got out fishing with my buddy on Conesus yesterday. The fish are spawning and laying on beds, so the action was pretty slow. We did catch a good variety of fish though, bluegills, rock bass, largemouth, smallmouth, perch and northerns. I had one of the biggest nothererns Ive seen in quite some time roll on my jerkbait just as I got it to the boat. Now that I think about it, it could have been a muskie. It was pretty light colored. No really big bass this time, a few in the 3lb range and the biggest smallie was probably just over 2 1/2, but I didnt weigh that one.

  10. First solo trip on the river today. Between locks 9 and 10. One of my favorite stretches . Saw a mink up close but he scooted before I could get a pic. The launching and landing of the bassboat can be a pain by myself. But it went pretty good today. Oh yeah.....caught six smallmouth. The biggest about three and a half pounds.

  20. I have a decent sized pond. I have transplanted several migrating painted turtles to it in in recent years. Neighbor has an enormous pond and the larger Snappers come down to mine to lay eggs and use it as a nursery.I have had occasion to help huge Snappers back to the large pond in my wheel barrow. It's a decent hike for them.

  23. It's just a block of untreated 2x2 about 4 inches long, soaked in Apple scent, hanging about 12 feet off the ground near the edge of the property. By pruning back the Appletrees and underbrush around them we hope they will produce more heavily this year. We hope that with a patch of clover/kalewith draw deer in. The block is just a test hypothesis. Since mineral/food licks are illegal but attractant are not. I figure it was worth a shot to see if the Apple attractants my buddy uses actually work. The block is unreachable by deer so as to prevent them being able to lick it. And I expect the scent will be gone within 48 hrs. Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

  28. It is frustrating when your vision goes downhill to the point where using open sights accurately on firearms becomes very hard. Once I went to the bifocals focusing with open sights went south bad especially with the rear v-notch-buckhorn types. With the peep-aperture type I can still get a pretty fair sight picture and can shoot well but there are some older design firearms that are not suited for a peep or there is just no manufacturer that makes one that fits. I have three 22 rifles of vintage design, a couple of Taurus rifles that are modern copies of the Winchester 63 autoloader and the 62 gallery pump, both with crappy v-notch rear sights. Also a little Savage favorite single shot with the same type of sights. Scopes would solve the sight problem but these old designs were just not made to put a scope on. There are tang type sights that would work but finding one that fits properly and having to to drill and tap some hole makes that option a pain in the ass. Aso tang sights are mounted right on top of the grip making for me an unnatural hold that I don't care for. Well a couple of sight companies manufacture peep sights that mount in place of the old buckhorn v-notch sight's dovetail on the barrel. Skinner is one outfit that makes a very nicely machined high quality sight in both stainless and blues steel and old standby Marbles also makes a sight similar to the old buckhorn style except there are a couple of circles to sight through instead of a v-notch. I decided to give them a try and ordered one of each, the Skinner was mounted on the Taurus pump and the Marbles on the Savage single shot. I would say the biggest improvement with these sights is seeing a small target. Both the Taurus and the Savage's rear v-notch would cover most of a Chipmunk size target making a precise shot hard. With the peeps I can actual see a small target and am limited now by the size of the bead of the front sight which with longer distances eventually covers the target. Now I have some real tack driving scope mounted rimfire rifles that make shots on small game pretty easy but there are times I just like using an old vintage type firearm. So to sum things up I have been using both classic rifles with decent success eliminating Chipmunks here on the farm. Both rifles are better than they were and are now usable for vermin and being shot instead of sitting in the gun safe not being used for anything. That was the point of this thread, anyone that has an old classic just sitting around not being used because of the sights might have an option to dust off the old timer and fire it up. This is the Skinner sight that I have on the Taurus pump. This is the Marbles that I have on the Savage single shot.

  35. One of the few wht. pines we have on the place...We saved it from the goats with a fence for years....It was a great tree to sit under in the summer and read.... Deer loved to bed under it...but it was already mature when we moved here 22years ago and had a 3 part trunk...the wind took out one then another a few years ago and that gave way to insects then disease......Mr B really was hoping that orange in the needles would magically disappear...I knew better and dropped her while he was gone.... Funny how we can become attached to the plants/trees that grow around us. He noticed right away..." So Paulette Bunyan...I see you dropped it while I was away"....It had NO Sap in it and was extremely light to haul away, he wants the big chunks for bomb fires so I chunked it up and the rest went to the fences.

  40. I have no solution, yet I chuckle , I worry when crossing get into Canada , will my NRA sticker cause a search ? Is there a loose .22 or shotgun shell rolling around in my trunk ? Yet on the southern " boarder" it's catch and release of criminals coming across, and the don't catch many to begin with.

  42. What solutions? Any wall or fence will not stop the problem. You think all the illegal arms and drugs come walking, boating, or driving across our borders? No! They get flown in just like many of the illegal immigrants. What's next? Put a bubble around the USA to protect us? Walls and bubbles are no solution! That will never happen. Like I said already, money talks and the corrupt turn away. If you are trying to turn a bad spin on Trump, you picked the wrong issue. I don't think he means actual walls. I think it's metaphorical. Create a better line of defense against illegals. Step up security.

  43. Let's try this theory: The old doe has had her fawns in tow for a year. These fawns have had ma make every decision for them. Now it is time for ma to pop out a new fawn or two, and she doesn't do that in a crowd, so she ditches the fawns for the first time in their lives. Now its time for them to make all those decisions that the more experienced doe was making for them. One bad decision regarding road crossings frequently is their last. The learning curve gets real steep, or it gets very short. I don't think it is any coincidence that this spike in the roadkill comes at the same time as fawning season.
